Interview with Nell Green, 6 November 2017 (SA 69/1/4/1) by Essex Record Office published on 2018-10-12T08:49:25Z Oral history interview with Nelzine (Nell) Green, recorded by Evewright Arts Foundation (EAF) for their Caribbean Takeaway Takeover project. Nell Green was born in Jamaica in 1938. She moved to Dudley in 1962 to train as a nurse, joining her brother and aunt who had moved there previously. She completed further training in London, then Scotland, where she met her future husband, a doctor from Colchester. Her husband's work in the Army took them to Malaya and Germany. They returned to Jamaica for about eighteen months, and finally settled in Brightlingsea. Nell worked as a midwife for the military base in Colchester. This interview covers her decision to move to England; her impressions of Dudley; her experiences of racism in and out of the army; her reasons for wanting to become a midwife and her experiences at work.
