BAUDOT, Jean Maurice Émile (1845 - 1903)

French Engineer and Inventor. He was a pioneer of telecommunications. He developed the Baudot code for digital communications and a multiplexing printing telegraph.

Baudot was born on September 11th in 1845 in Magneux, France. He received only primary education and worked at his father’s farm until he joined the French Post & Telegraph Administration in 1869. He served in the Franco-Prussian War and returned to Paris in 1872. He invented and patented a 5-bit code and a printing telegraph in 1874. The device was accepted by the French telegraph administration in 1875 and, in 1878 it was presented in the Universal Exposition of Paris in which he won the Exposition’s Gold Medal. His system was adopted by many countries. He died on March 28th in 1903 at Sceaux near Paris.

1894 Installation d'un appareil de triplex sur le télégraphe entre Paris et Bordeaux, qui était exploité avec une certaine difficulté sur le télégraphe Hughes.
1894 Etablissement de la communication entre la Bourse de Paris et la Bourse de Milan, à nouveau sur un seul fil, en utilisant sa nouvelle invention, le retransmetteur.
1895 Hollande Implantation du système de télégraphe en Hollande.
1896 Suisse Implantation du système de télégraphe en Suisse.
1897 La Poste britannique a adopté son système Baudot pour un circuit simplex entre Londres et Paris.
1897 Amélioration et standardisation (sous le nom d'Alphabet Télégraphique International Numéro Un) du système Baudot en passant à la bande perforée, comparable à la bande Morse utilisée sur les systèmes Wheatstone et Creed.
1897 Autriche Implantation du système de télégraphe en Autriche.
1897 Brésil Implantation du système de télégraphe au Brésil.
1898 Officier de la Légion d'honneur.
1900 Italie Chevalier de l'Ordre des Saints Maurice et Lazare (Italie).
