A fatwa cannot be rescinded unless a higher authority can offer a different interpretation. Since the death of Imam Khomeini in June 1989, there has not emerged another authority with greater or even equal stature to rescind the fatwa. In any case, it is based on sound Islamic principles and is supported by Qur'anic commands as well as numerous ahadith. Muslims throughout the world, of all Schools of Thought, support the fatwa. On September 29, three senior Ayatullahs in Iran reaffirmed the fatwa considering Salman Rushdie, whowrote the "The Satanic Verses" that was deemed blasphemous to Islam,and said that it cannot be rescinded.

Fetva se ne može opozvati ukoliko neki viši autoritet ne ponudi drugačije tumačenje. Još od smrti imama Homeinija juna 1989. godine, nije se pojavio neki drugi autoritet sa većim ili istim ugledom da bi opozvao dotičnu fetvu. Usvakom slučaju, ona se zasniva na zdravim islamskim načelima i podržana je kuranskim zapovestima, kao i brojnim hadisima. Muslimani po celom svetu, svih pravnih škola, podržavaju fetve. Iste godine, 29. septembra, trojica starijih ahatolaha u Iranu potpvrdila su fetvu koja se odnosi na Salmana Rušdija, autora Satanskih stihova, knjige koja se smatra bogohulnom za islam, i izjavili su da se ona ne može opozvati.
