One tafsir may differ with another on the interpretation of a text of the Qur'an. There are a number of reasons for this but the most important one may be external or internal. In Ibn Taimiya's opinion, for example, a Mufassir may have used unsound material and his interpretation actually rests on some pre conceived belief or other motive thus introducing false innovation, bida. Some Mufassirin have used the Isra'iliyat, the Jewish origins of the narratives mentioned in the Qur'an particularly derived from non-canonical Jewish and Christian traditions. Such material was used by some of the Sahaba, but it was referred to more by the Tabi'un and by later generations. The other difference may have been internal.

Jedan tafsir se može razlikovati od drugog prilikom tumačenja Kurana. Postoje određeni razlozi za to, ali najvažniji mogu biti spoljne ili unutrašnje prirode. Na primer, po mišljenju ibn Tajmije, mufasir možda raspolaže neverodostojnim materijalom pa njegovo tumačenje počiva na nekom predubeđenju ili nekom drugom motivu što tako dovodi do lažnog otkrića, bide. Neki mufasiri koriste Israilijat, jevrejske izvore priča spomŽnutih u Kuranu, naročito onih koje su potekle od nekanonskih tradicija Jevreja i hrišćana. Takav materijal su koristili neki iz kruga sahabe (Muhamedovih pratilaca), ali su mu se više obraćali njihovi naslednici i kasnije generacije. Druga razlika može biti unutrašnje prirode.
