Description:
Presents a view of the Swiss Alps from Mount Pilatus. In Sir Walter Scott's Anne of Geierstein (1829), the exiled Lancastrians John de Vere, Earl of Oxford, and his son, Arthur, travel incognito through Switzerland on a mission to convert Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, to the Lancastrian cause. As they stand beneath the 'dark and shadowy eminence' of Mount Pilatus, they are told the local legend that Pontius Pilate committed suicide by throwing himself into the lake at its summit and that his ghost still haunts the peak. The original steel engraving was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
