Description:
Depicts Warwick Castle in the moonlight, with the River Avon in the foreground. In Sir Walter Scott's Kenilworth (1821), Queen Elizabeth I stays at Warwick Castle while travelling to Kenilworth Castle. Scott describes it as 'that fairest monument of ancient and chivalrous splendour which yet remains uninjured by time' (ch. 25). Scott visited Warwick Castle in September 1815 when travelling home from France. The original steel engraving was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
