BRITISH IRON COMPANY. We have reftsctn to believe that considerable misapprehension exists with ragard to the affairs cf this company, since the late important dicision in the House of Lords in favour of Mr. Att- wood. As the true position of the company appears to have been much misrepresented in certain statements which have gone abtoad, we direct the attention of our readers to the official in- 're t t 1( for nation which accompanies the subjoined note of the seere- taiy, having obtained an early copy, we are desirous of giving it immediate and extended publicity, as so largfc ari amount of property must be affected by the statements alluded to. The iion trade, which had for many yeais been in an unpro- fitable state, having begun to revive in the end of the year 1835, it was considered desirable to show what the profit had been since that period, as some foundation (though a very in- adequate one) on which to form an opinion for the future. A statemeut was aceOlrlingly laid before the last meeting of the proprietors, showing that the profit at the works for the two years, from December, 183;, to Uecember, 1887, had been X76,620 18s 7d subject to a deduction of 1:7544 19 9d for interest and discounts, by which it was reduced to £ 69,075 18s 10 but which interest and discounts would not have been incurred, if there had been a sufficient working cap tal and, therefore, will cease to be a usual charge upon the works, when an adequate capital is provided The period of two years was also considered desirable, be- cause the prices of the stock at the beginning and end of that time were very nearly the same although, during that period, the selling prices of iron had fluctuated considerably, and were much hiher at the end of the year 1836 than at the beginning. and much lower at the end of 1837 than at the beginning of that year. If these years were taken separately, and the stock were valued subject to the difference between the price at the begin- ning and at the end of each year (which amounted to £ 10,000 in the former year i'1 favour of the account, and in the latter to a similar sum against it), the profit and loss account would be thereby affected, so as not to show the true result of the actual operations. Valuing the stock, llierfore, at the same prices at the beginning and end of these respective years, the profit of £ 76.620 18s 7d is thus divided, viz.— In 1836 £ 50,621 3 9 In 1837 26,099 14 10—76,620 18 7 Deduct interest account 7,544 10 9 Leaving the net Drofit £ 69,075 IB 10 I Respecting the impediments occasioned by the suit with Mr. Attwood, the diminished make of ion, and other circumstances affecting the operations of these two years, so as to make the profit less than it otherwise would have been, the proprietors arc referred to the report of the directors, read at the meeting on the 4th instant. On the subject of calls, the directors have to observe, that by the resolutions pased at the last meeting, and which will be proposed for confirmation at the meeting to be held on the 25th instant, no further calls beyond Xlii per share can be made without the consent of the proprietois and it is not intended io call for tint amount except in sums not exceeding X2 10s per shate, at one time, and at distant intervals, for the purpose "f paying off the proposed loan, or any part of it, which miy not be provided for from the company's other sources. The un qualified opinion of counsel being, that there is no liability to Mr. Attwood for payment of J325,000, the directors do not think it necessary to make any provision with respect to that sum. An extract from the contract is subjoined. If, at a fu- ture period, it should be thought desirable by the directors and proprietors to redeem the interest payable whilst the possession and working of Congreaves be continued, they may do so, either by giving their assent to calls for that purpose, or by disposing of anv part of the property of the company. THE NEW QUICKSILVER STEAM-SHIP. The splendid new steamer (Columbus), destined shortly to cross the Atlantic, which has created much interest from the novel construction of the machinery, made after Mr. Howard's invention, fcr itib rapid vapourisation of water on iion plates over heated quicksilver, on Iriday took a ttial trip down the Mersey, and round the light ship, with a highly rCSpectalde party of gentlemen on board. She excited much cuiiosit), on the river from the novelty of her appearance and the beauty of her model. In her construction she lids moit the appearanceof in elegant made brig. She has two Chimneyi, bpih veiy low, and from the peculiar COJI, the anthracite, consumed by iiet", no smoke is emitted. By the politeness of C;ilita In Daniel Green, her commander, and Air. Howard, the inventor of her machinery, we have been furnished with the following particulars :—The Columbus is 330 tons builder s measurement, t;e;o '21 J foot- beam, and 145 feet keel. with 13! feet dept-h of holrf. She has 110-horse power, two 55-feet engines, the cylinder being 40^ inches diamfeter, and 3J feet stroke, and wheel 17^ feet diameter. Her speed through the water is 10 statuie mif per hour; the immersed section at her present load is 150 square feet, :ie has now on board '20 days fuel, besides 30 tons of iron ballast. The novelty of the engines (Mr. Howard's patent) consists in a new method of producing the steairi and of condensing it, the Utter part of the invention being applicable io to the ordinary boileis. 1-i a boiler the heat from the fuel is passed over very extensive surfaces, in contact with which is a large liod)- of water, the temperatuie of which is always such as is due to the density or pressure of the steam, and, consequently, the evaporation is limited by such circumstance. In the invention, the steam is fonned by bringing a small quantity of water, pre- viously made boiling hot, in contai tvvith a comparatively small surface, heated to and maintained at the temperature of most rapid vavourisation, viz. about 400 degrees, to, effect; which a quantity of mercury or amalgam lies between iron pUtes, the one near the fire being a plain surface of only three-quarters of a foot per horse power, and the other, or vapourising surface, being about four times as much. The steam never o!,tains a density or pressure due to the temperature, but is itseft heated to about 400 degrees, and worked in about 10 pounds to tile inch, and cut off from the cylinder at half ilie stroke. The fuel made use of is coke or stone coal, or other fuel giving a strong local heat and little flame. That employed to-day was Kil- kenny coal. The consumption of fuel is three tons per day of 24 hours, and the fire grates have a total bar surface of only 22 feet, the air being supplied by a small blowing machine, under easy regulation. The iron plates exposed to the fire are per- fectly secured from any bad effect from the somewhat intense heat by the close contact of the mercury within them, and which absorbs and gives out the heal with the ulmost rapidity, The combined effect of the reduction in the consumpion of fuel, and in the weight and size of the vapourisers compared with b >1 rs. is such that a steam-vessel of any ordinary tonnage and power wiil be enabled at her loaded immersion to make a voyage of five times the length now practicable. The steamer made a delightful trip round the light ship. Her speed is not great— about 10 miles an hour; but is very good, taking into consider- ation the power of her engines with her tonnage. Her paddle wheels are also on an improved principle, being constructed after Mordan's patent, the paddles turning on an eccenllic cen- tre with the wheel, and always turning perpendicularly, ex- posing a perfectly perpendicular surface to the water. By this means the beating of the paddles on the w^ter is avoided and the consequent being and vibration of the vessel done away with, the paddles always descending into, and rising out of the wa: perpendicularly. On friday last, the vessel made an ex- perimental trip to Dublin, and was 171- hours on her passage, having a stiong head-wind parI of the way. She returned on Sunday in 15 hours. At Holyhead she fell in with the Nler- maid steamer, from Waterford, and slightly gained upon her. The fires require not half the labour to keep them up of the or- dinary steam-boiler tires.—Liverpool paper.

SINGING Linns.—Persons who have not attended to the songs of birds, suppose that those of similar species utter the same notes and passages, whereas to a skilful ear no two birds of the same species will be found to sing exactly alike. And the London bird-catchers prefer the song of the Kentish goldfinches, and that of the Essex chaffinches, and the Surrey nightingales to those of Middlesex. The bird which approaches nearest to the excellence of the nightingale is the sky-lark and would I perhaps be more on an equality with it did it not partake so much of the nature of the American mocking-bird, l he sky- lark, even after it has become peifect in its natural note, will catch that of any other bird that hangs nesr it. Few persons that keep canaries are aware that they sing chiefly eithcllhe tit- lark s or the nightingale s notes. When imported directly from the Canary Islands, they have seldom any song, nor till they have the advantage of lyrolese education, have any chance of being raised into estimation as singers. It is nut now, how- ever, by importation that the bieed is kept up. Most of the canaries brought to England from the continent have been educated by parents, the progenitors of which have been in- structed by nightingales. In Gernwnv the song of the chaffinch is as much esteemed as that of the nightingale. CONTRITE FLEWS. THE CORONATION.—The coronation is fixed for Tuesday the 261h of June next. There has not for a fcng time been so warm and so united an attachment to the person who has had the honour to sway the sceptre of this country, M at present. Let this feeling be cherished, and a spirit of union and good will be kindled in every bosom, from the first Lord of the Treasury down to the humblest subject in the realm. Let us not forget on this occasion to remember and give gifts to the poor. Let charity curtail the appetite for gluttony and excess. As the rich will doubtless have their dinners and their parties, I would strongly recom- mend that a dinner or a tea party be provided, in every town, for the poor. I mention thi3 !hus early, that those who may approve of the hint to have time to make the arrangements, and raise the means. I intend proposing this to the loyal and benevolent of Preston, especially for the hand lourr, weavers, and the extent of the feast shall be bounded only by the limits of the funds.— Livescy. MIR Act Lots ESCAPE.—Un Tuesday se'nnight, 1r, W. Sibley, foreman of the moulders in the Ryinney Iron Works, desired two of his men to make up the tapping hole of one of the furnaces and get it fired for the purpose of melting a few tons of iron; previously cautioning them to search for any tools that might be hid there, the vyidi k- men beme in the habit of hiding their shovels, See., in those places. Having made up the tapping hole and examined the furnace, with the exception of the grate (which had been filled for nearly three weeks with shavings and coal), and believing that every thing was correct, the men shut up the doors, when one of them proceeded to set fire to the shavings in the grate by means of a heated non bar. In about two or three minutes, be was alarmed at hearing a person exclaim 11 For God's sake, let me out-I am al- most smothered and, to his horror, found that the voice proceeded from some person within the furnace. lie im- mediately obtained the assistance of some men who were at work close by, and succeeded in raising the door of the furnace, in which they discoved a young woman in an al- most lifeless state. The men lost no time in extricating her from her perilous situation, and in about two hours she recovered sufficiently to be abltf to explain the circum- stance of her being found in the furnace, I' appears that she had been at work all night in a level close by, and "11 the preceding evening, having hid a bottle in ilit izrate,iie went there early in the morning to get it out, and, being I exhausted had fallen asleep on the coals! Fortunately f-tr her there had been a great fall of rain, which had pene- trated to the shavings, and thus prevented immediate igni- tion. Had it not been for this providential circumstance she must inevitably have been burnt to ashes in a few minutes. IRELAND. EXEMPLARY.—The labouring classes, chiefly Catholitf, in the neighbourhood of the Rev. Archibald Douglas, the Protestant tector of Cootehill, lately assembled, and with picks, spaded, crowbars, and shovels, dug a channel from a lake on his glebe to a neighbouitrig river, which carried off such a quantity of waier as to restore about twenty- five acres of the pnrnest land for cultivation. Much valuable timber that had been submerged for ,es was at the same time discovered. The men to whom Christian conduct teaches such acts as these, are of just the same mind and mould with those whom oppression turns into Imdfllh legislators—the prowling outcasts of society.
