TO Til K "I'.OI'LE OF lit…
At a great meeting at Leeds depiceatury of war the following addios was rcad — TO Til K "I'.OI'LE OF lit A NC't' For the Inst ten years our respectivt nations have been closelj allied in friendship, and tlmt fiiendship s«» advantageous to botli ¡,tlj,,S, we hoped Rud believed would be lasting. Now, however, it seems that these hopes are in danger of beinj; blasted, and that France and England arc about to commence a disastrous and deplorable conllict. What we ask of ycu and of our fellow-countrymen, are the two mightiest nations in the world going to w^r about 1 The answer of our government is, that a quarrel has taken place between two semi-barbaiiaiis in a remote corner of the earth and that the English government has mteifered on one side, and the French government is about to interfere ou the other side. Thus war between its, is to be the consequence of the unnecessary meddling of our rulers, in affairs Which concern neither you nor us. Thus for a dispute in which neither the people of France nor of England have Ihe slightest interest, we are to be compelled, to slaughter one another, to destroy out tlouiishing commerce, to ruin our trade, to incur vast debt, to burthen oar people with enormous taxation, to put a stop to all internal improvements, to cxullf,; the viiest feelings of national antipathy ami hatied between us, to let loose the hell-hounds of war, and to cover the earth with fury, havock, and desolation. And ail fur what ? To determine whether the Saltan of Tur- key 01 the Pacha of K-gypt sh a II possess a few leagues moreoi less of territory Can it be possible that the people of Fiance and Kngl.tnd will (juielly subitilt to such a proceeding, and w.ll permit their rulers to iuvolve them in war for so I'Miiniticant and uiiwoi thy nn object? As a portion ot the Knglish people, we prolest against it in the nante ol reason and justice. We call upon our fellow-citizens to iinitnle our example, and to denounce war with you. As Lnglishincn we enteiluin the kindliest feelings towards you, and think that we ought to be more closely allied with you than any other Luropean nation. As inhabitants of this borough we are deeply indebted lo you. For to your last revolution we owe the Reform Hill and thus tint we possess representatives in the the Wiitish l'ariiamant, and enjoy self-goveinmcnt. Without that revolution we should have had no voice amongst the Commons of England.-no one whom we could instruct to demand peace and friendship wiih you. lnflticnced by these feelings we, deeply deplore and condemn any policy which tends to sow dissention and discord between France and England, or which would ally us unnaturatty with the Northern Barbarian, instead of with the most civilized nation of the earth. We should behold a war with yon with the greatest hoiror, as being one of the greatest calamities which could befal Europe. We hold out to you the hand of peace and friendship. We call upon you, and the peoplo of England, to disregard the blundering of our respective governments, and to decree that order and fiiendship shall subsist between us for ever. We confidently believe that you will respond to these sentiments. We are convinced that you are of far too gcnc.ous aud noble a nature to suppo-e that in these protFers of fileidsliip we aie actuated by any unworthy or ignoble motive-by fear or any servile feeling. Of such sentiments two great nations of equal power, like France ami England, are utterly incapable. is Lot because we mo afraid of you. strength, or you oi ours, lha we ouoht to be friends but because the mte.estsof trance ami England are the s.xme-thcir institutions similar -he. r people equally animated bv an anient love ot freedom, and supe.ior to all others in the art's, sciences, and lehncim .its «=l li e-because in power, whether by sea or land, they a.e unrivalled by any Luiopean nation, and when united are capable of resisting the world in arms-because they have the same duties to perform towards the human race, for to the." 's cohded the nolJleYlsk 01 cd'ryiug ou the progress of emotion .and of improving the moral and r.oeial condition of n,ank.nd--and lastly, becnuse uature has placed them close to one another, its if the God of nature had decreed them to be indissoluble itiends. War between two such nations, we therefore pronounce to be execrable and impious.

Fiom IS33 to I838 1 was at St. John's, Newfoundland, doing duty as a Sub ailern in the Royal Veteran Companies, where L suffered most severely, and was under the care of Surgeon Huston, II.\ StafI-Assistant-Surgeon Ferguson, and Ilr. private prac tilioner there, without being able to pieveut the most violent fits of the gout three or four times annually, which Incoming so had, caused the Garrison Order for the Medical Board, as be- fore named. About the middle of last February, and the whole of March my sufferings were dieadful in fact. 1 was unable lo nioVe without being carried when Ilajor Birch, of Crou- dale. near Faitrhatn, a magistrate of this county, kindly com- misdating my situation, railed on me for the purfose oftatdut; my affidavit, that 1 might receive my half-pay and seeing ine in so miserable a slate, advised me to try Blair's Gout and Rheumatic Pills, saying, although not gouty himself, he knew seveial who had derived benefit from them. I had previously been advised by a then neighbour, Mr. Fedgent, of Ahlcrshc.t, to tiy them, but I declined until the Major recommended them. I commenced by taking them according lo the directions, and aber taking sis pills, fotiud a cessation of all pain, and the re- miinder of the box effectually rettled thaljil.
