"This work, a TENTH edition of which is now presented to the pubiic ten thousand copies have been exhausted since its first appearance—has been very much improved and enlarged by the addition of a more extended and clear detail of general princi- ples as also by the insertion of several vew and highly interest- ing cases. The numberless instances daily occurring, wherein atfeclions of the lungs, putting on all the outward appearances of consumption, which, however, when traced to their source, are found to lesult Irom certain baneful habits, fully prove that the principle of the division of labour is nowhere more applica- ble than in medical practice. We feel no hesitation in saying, that there is no member of society bv whom the book will not be found useful, whether such person fiold the relation of a parent, a preceptor, or a clergi mail. Sti?t. Messrs. Usk, February 28, 1844. THE PATENT METAIIHC CAPSULE, AN INFALLIBLE SECURITY AGAINST FRAUDULENT SUBSTITUTIONS FOR BETF S'S PA,REN r BRANDY. TO those who recollect the nauseous and unwholesome pio- perties which distinguished the article kn> wn as British Brandy, previously to the year 1849, and the prediction that all attempts at competition with French Brandy could only result in an entire faiiure, the introduction of the Patent Brandy, at that period, was matter of much surprise com- bining, as it was found to do, all the essential properties of the finer qualities of Brandy manufactured in France, with a de- gree ot purity, and consequent wholesomeness, unknown in the latter. The existence of these valuable properties in BETIS'S PA- TENT BRANDY, was distinctly certified, after analysis, by some of the first Chemists of the day. That evidence has neen fully sustained by the extensive support ot the most eminent Medical Men; and, veiy especially, by its long-established use, under Medical direction, in preference to French Brandy,in the prin- cipal Infirmaries, Hospitals, and other Public Institutions, throughout the country among which it will suffice to name Guy's and the Westminster Hospitals, in the Metropolis, and tne Manchester and Bristol Infirmaries. An unprecedented extent of sale has, likewise, marked its progress in public esti- mation. That an article possessed of such merits, and sold at little more than half the price of French Brandy, should not have entirely superseded the use of the Foreign, is only to be attri- buted to the fact, that the Patentee has had tostrugitle, notoilly with the original-and, it must be admitted, well founded— prejudice against Brandy produced in this country but, also, against a constant succession of attempts ¡ 0 foice into con sumptlon inferior deser iPtiOns.-in many cases as substitutes for, and even under the narre of. the Patent Biatidy. The correction of this evil, which hat long been matter of extreme soliciiude to the Patentee, is at length effected, by a METALLIC CAHSULF. or covering for the Lock; the exclusive manufacture of which is secured to him by Letters Patent. 1, is composed—KOI OF -TINFOIL, an article.MUCH u.ed but-of perfectly pure and SOLID MET H stamP^yH^e ?LD OF P°wer- ful and costlv machinery, into the exact size and shape adapted !o the bottle y ,0 which it is attached by simple but mo-t. ffec- tiv" means •' and its adhesion is so peitect, that it cannot be temoved without being complete J destroyed; and, therefore, no Capsule can be used a second time.
