IMPORTANT TO ADVERTISERS THE Counties of SOUTH WALES, bor. dering on England, offer the most valuable and profitable fields for ADVERTISERS that can be found within the same extent in the empire-if we exclude the great Metropolis, and the rich teeming districts of the ever-productive, the ever-absorbing NORTH. MONMOUTHSHIRE, GLAMORGANSHIRE, BRECONSHIRE, with their large population, commercial enterprise, and rapidily-increasing wealth, are, unquestionably, COUNTIES to which Advertisers may look with confidence for an ample return for any outlay they may incur, in pushing their several interests, with a view to large and produc- tive sales, &c. THE MONMOUTHSHIRE MERLIN, GLAMORGANSHIRE AND BRECON SILURIAN, AND SOUTH WALES ADVERTISER, has been for more than a quarter of a century, the GREAT ADVERTISING MEDIUM OF THE DISTRICT. Advertisers desirous of availing themselves of the pub- licity of its columns, are requested to address the Publisher, Mr. CHRISTOPHERS, NEWPORT, MON- MOUTHSHIRE. Advertisements inserted on a Moderate Scale; and when Contracted for by the Year, Half-year, or Quarter, the terms are proportionately reduced. NEWSPAPER CIRCULATION". [1800 WINES FROM THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. 20s. PER DOZEN, PORT, SHERRY, MADEIRA, MARSALA, &c., &c., of the first growths only. Tne "LANCET," 5th June, 1858, states We have re- cently been engaged in making some careful examinations of the Cape or South African Wines, our samples being selected from the stock of Messrs. GIL BEY, of 357, Ox- ford-street. We are thus enabled to correct some very erroneous impressions which have got abroad in respect to these wines—namely, that they are themselves adulterated, and that they are used for adulteration. This is by no means the case, except in some rare and exceptional in- stances. On the contrary, we have proved these wines to be both genuine and wholesome, while their moderate price is a great recommendation." The LANCET," June 5th, 1858. Opinion of the Medical Times," and Dr. Letheby and "s Dr. Hassali's analysis sent on application. Any two samples forwarded for 12 stamps. Carriage paid, if requested, to any Railway Station or Port in the Kingdom, for Is. per dozen. No charge made for Bottles, Casks, and Cases, if returned. W. and A. HONORARY SECRETARY AND TREASURER: JOHN EDWARD LEE, ESQ. KEEPER OF TBE MUSEUM AND COLLECTOR OF THE SUBSCRIPTIONS MR. THOS. POWELL, POST-OFFICE, CAERLEON. The ANNUAL MEETING of the Society will be held on THURSDAY, the 12th of August, at PENCOED CASTLE near Llanmartin. The Committee take this opportunity of laying before the inhabitants of the county and district in general, a brief view of the objects and proceedings of the Asso- ciation. The interesting locality of Caerleon, the ancient Isca Silurum, not having attracted the notice which it de. served, the Society was originally formed chiefly, but not entirely, of those gentlemen in the neighbourhood who felt an interest in the antiquities found there, and who were anxious for their preservation. The county liberally re- sponded to the call of the Society, and enabled tha Com- mittee to build the small, but handsome Museum now at Caerleon. The subscriptions were arranged on the lowest possible scale, in the hope of including all classes who felt an inte- rest in the science. The annual payment of Five Shillings for a Gentleman, and Half-a-crown for an unmarried Lady, was sufficient to constitute them members of the Society, while those who took a greater interst in it willingly sub- scribed, some Ten Shillings and some One Pound annually. A payment of Two Pounds at once constituted a life member. On the average, the total amount of these subscriptions has not been more than about twenty pounds per annum. It will readily be seen that this is a very small income to defray any repairs of the building, the expense of col- lecting the subscriptions, and the. charge of cleaning and exhibiting the Museum in fact, had it not been for the aid given by some of its members, the Society would not have been able to have accomplished even what it has done. The chief object of the Society, as laid down at its first meeting, was the preservation of the Antiquities of the district," but it comprehended also the furtherance of any Antiquarian pursuits, whether by excavation or otherwise In accordance with these views, meetings have been held every year, sometimes at Caerleon, and sometimes at other localities, when excavations have been made (chiefly paid for by subscriptions in the county), and occasionally papers have been read on antiquarian sub- jects as far as possible connected with the localities of meeting. The Committee, knowing that there are in this district a large number of individuals who take a general interest in Antiquities, yet comparatively few are desirous of lis- tening to lengthy papers and discussions, have always advocated viva voce explanations of the localities, when any members would bo kind enough to give them, rather than regular papers but at the same time, as the object of the Society is not mere amusement, they have deemed it advisable, as far as their funds will allow, to place on record, in the shape of small volumes of notes and illustra- tions, the. chief peculiarities of any place where their meetings are held. The Committee would refer to the small volume of Caldicot Castle, printed four years ago, of which each member then received a copy free, and as some copies still remain, it is intended that as far as they will go, a copy will be presented to each new member. They further beg to state, that a second small volume has just been completed on the Ecclesiastical Ruins of Runston, Sudbrook, Dinham, and Llan-bedr—by Octavius Morg-m, Esq., M.P., F.R.S., V.P.S.A., and Thomas Wakeman, Esq., illustrated by eleven Plates, diMwn by the Secretary, J. E. Lee, Esq., of which it is intended that a copy will be presented to each member at the Annual Meeting this year. It is the wish of the Committee to describe, as f ir as their means will allow, the military, ecclesiastical, and civil remains of the district. A small volume has now been finished on some of the remains in the two first divi- sions. It is hoped that before long the intentiocs of the Committee may be carried out by the publication of no- tices of some of the civil remains, viz., of the old houses of the district. If the Society prospers, it seems a legiti- mate appropriation of any funds they may have in hand to give additional volumes in each of the above-named divisiens of antiquities. At the last annual meeting, held at Raglan, on the sug- gestion of several influential inhabitants of the county, and with a view to enlarge the sphere of its operations, the title of the Society was altered to that of the MON- MOUTHSHIRE AND CAERLEON ANTIQUARIAN ASSOCIA- TION," thus making it a General Association, rather thau a local one and it was also suggested that the subscrip- tions should be increased. But the Comn ittee, desiring to include all classes, so as to make the interest in the Society as general as possible, resolved, before proposing such & change to the Annual Meeting, to lay before the county in general this brief statement of its objects and proceedings, and ask for a more extended support, as they are convinced that by a large number of meuiLers paying a moderate subscription, the iuteiests of Archaeology will be more likely to be furthered than by a small number paying a larger amount. The Committee make this statement trusting that there may be many individuals who, either from having consi- dered the Society as a local one, or from knowing nothing of [its proceedings, have Bever yet become members, and yet whose tastes and inclinations would lead them to join the Association and the Committee would further urge upon the inhabitants of the county in general (even if they should not have an especial taste for Antiquities) that i&. must be desirable on every account to examine, illustrate, and reoord remains of the di»trict which are daily ud hourly going to &-y.
