J. FORREST, Author cf "Cromwell in Wal-s," "Tudor and riantagenet," &c. The end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth saw one of the most wonderful struggles oil tLe part of a small but gallant nation for its lost liberties ever kuown in history, under a man who, according to Carnhuanawc, "only required a more numerous people and a wider tield to became victorious." The ruins of various castles, abbeys, und palaces now existing are silent witnesses of the havoc played by Glendower and his forces against the power of Henry IV. and his armies. The death of that monarch and the succession of his son, Henry V., altered the position of affairs, and Glendower, exhausted by fourteen years of strife, was allowed to pass peacefully away at Monnington-on-the-Wye in 1415. He was a lineal descendant of Prince Llewelyn. The character of Owen Glendower has not been done full justice to by many English writers. As with Koscuisko at a later period, and Garibaldi in the present century, Glendower's forces were always small. He probably never had more than 4,uCO men under him, not fully trained, yet by his military skill and know- ledge of the country he was enabled to baffle Henry's armies for many years. The accession of the Tudors to the throne of Eng- land did much towards creating a better feeling between England aud. Wales. In the time of Henry VIII. a law was passed that all acts relating to Eng- land should apply equally to the Principality. The new story "Owen Glendower" will be found most entertaining, and will be appreciated by all who are anxious to add to their knowledge of an exciting period of Welsh history.
