STEPHENSON is instructed to .l.. BELL BY AUCTION, at the Royal Hotel, Cardiff, on THURSDAY, the 10th July, 1873, at Two for Three o'clock in the afernoon, subject to such Conditions of Sale as shall be then and there produced, the very valuable FREEHOLD ESTATE kDown as BARRY ISLAND, in the Parish of Sully, in the County of Glamorgan, containing about IS3 Acres of Arable, Pasture, and Warren Land, situated on the northern shore of the Bristol Channel, about eight miles west of the seaport town of Cardiff, which is the seat of an enormous export and rapidly increasing import trade, and has direct railway communication with all parts of the kingdom. There is a good road from Cardiff through Barry as far as the seashore, and LL parish road across the eastern channel from Sully, and the passages acioss to the Island are ury twice daily for several hours. There is also a similar road and passage from Sully. Surveys were made some years ago, and Parliamentary powers obtained for the construction of a railway from Cardiff to Barry, with a bri Ige from the shore to the Island, an undertaking which presents no engineering difficulty, and can be carried out for a very moderate sum. Barry Island is admirably adapted for a first-class watering place, of which the mineral districts of South Wales, with their vase and rapidly growing population, as well as the town of Cardiff and its neighbourhood, are greatly in need; and it is certain that the construction of a railway from Cardiff would at once convert the greater part of the Island iut> building land of the most valuable character. The Island commands beautiful and extensive views of the Bristol Channel and its Islands, as well as of the Somersetshire Coast. It possesses in its western side a harbour safe and com- modious for vessels of 200 tons burden, and capable of great im- provement. Its southern shore takes the form of a bay of hard sand facing the south, 750 yards wide, enclosed and thoroughly sheltered from cold and stonny winds by two projecting head- lands. The sand in the bay falls 1 foot in 20 for the first 300 yards, and 1 in 50 for the remaining distance, and the ebb and flow of ti-ie in the bay is so gentle as to make it perfectly safe for bathing. The Island contains good building stone and lime, and a plentiful supply of fresh water. The formation is limestone; ttie other building materials can be easily and cheaply conveyed. There is a farm house with out-buildinys and garden, also a substantial residence, erected by a farmer proprietor. There are no tithes. The Estate is subject to a yearly rent of £;;5, to a small modus of 13s. 4d. a year, and to a fee farm or quit rent of 3s. 4d. a year. Plans, particulars, and conditions of sale, may be had on appli- cation to Charles Gatliff, Esq., 8, Finsbury Circus, London; to T. Waring, Esq., Town Hall, Cardiff; and at the Auctioneer's Offices, 21, Queen-street, Cardiff. 0084 Tredegarville; Windsor-place, óc Westbourne (ireseeiit-Taluable Leasehold Property. MESSRS. Capital £30.000 in 3,000 Shares of £10 each. £5 per Share to be paid on alltoinent, and the balance as may be required, but not earlier than three months after allotment. DIRECTORS. Samuel Dickinson, Metal Broker, Wolverhampton. W. Henry Hatton, The Wergs, Wolverhampton. James Liirht, jun., Ironfounder, Bradley, Bilstou. E. A. Wright, Merchant, Wolverhampton. BANKERS. The Staffordshire Joint Stock Bank Company, Limited, Bilston. SOLICITORS. Messrs. Duignan, Lewis, and Lewis, Walsall, and 15, Bedford- row, London, W.C. This Company is formed for the purpose of acquiring and ex- tending the businesi of malleable iron making and casting, the latter for many years past having been successfully carried on by Mr. James Light, at the Bradley Bridge Works, near Bilston, Staffordshire. The importance of an increased supply of cold blast charoal pig iron, in order to meet the demand arising from the very numerous uses to which malleable cast iron is now put, will be patent to every one at all acquainted with those branches of the hardware trades in which malleable castings are used. The only k;nds of crude metal suitable for these purposes are the pure charcoal and best hematite pig iron, of which only a limited supply, at high prices, has hitherto come into the market. For many years no attempt has been made in South Staffordshire to make char- coal pig iron, because of the want of wood fuel but that it can be made here, and under circumstances as favourable to highly re- munerative profit as anywhere else in the United Kingdom, has been proved by Mr. Liht, and it is the object of this Company, by means of larger capital and iii-re extt nsive appliances, to de- velope the manufacture so as to produce a more substantial profit than could be done by a private individual. The Company will purchase the Bradley Bridge Works, consist- in ef two blast furnares and plant, erected recently, on the most improved principles for making charcoal pig iron of the same quality as that known in the market as Lorn," and also for making first class hematite p;g iron, similar to that known in the market as "H.C.M." and Bessemer pig iron and Spiegeleisen, for which there is a large and increasing demand at advancing prices. The Company will also acquire the foundry adjoining the fur- naces, and the trade connected therewith, for many years suc- cessfully carried on in the manufacture of forge and mill castings, chilled and grain rolls, and specially of the pots and pans, of superior quality, used in the annealing of malleable castings and tinplates, for which this foundry is so celebrated in the district. A considerable and highly remunerative trade in refined metal has also been done in connection with the foundry, and may be greatly extended. The working of the furnaces and foundry in conjunction will afford the shareholders a double advantage. A large portion of the pig iron made at the furnaces will be used in the foundry, and thus an uniformly good quality will be ensured for the castings and the produce will carry a duplicate profit. It is estimated on a reliable basis that, as the works now stand, 1,000 tons of charcoal pig iron, and 3,000 tons of coke pig iron may be made annually, and from this and the operations at the foundry a large profit may be fairly anticipated. The Directors therefore have great confidence in recommending the Company to their Inends as likely to prove an investment of a very advantageous character. The works,—comprising a freehold site ef two acres or there- abouts, bounded on one side by the Birmingham Canal, and with- in easy distance of the Great Western and London and North Western Railways, the furnace and foundry buildings and plant, with six workmen's houses,—have been valued by a competent appraiser at A:9,864, and the loose stock at 44,118, making to- gether 413,962, The sum which the promoters have arranged to pay on behalf of the Company is £ 12.u00, out of which Mr. Light is to complete the furnaces and put them in good working order, and also to pay the whole cost of forming and registering the Company, which will therefore start clear of all preliminary ex- peiises. Nothilig whatever is to be paid for the valuable good- will and connexion. It is believed that, in addition to the pur- chase muiey of A:12,000, a further sum of £8,000 will suffice tor working capital, and that only £6 or £7 per share will have to be called up. The |'resent proprietors will take a large interest in the new Company as shareholders, and the practical management of the foundry will stiil remain in the hands of Mr. James Light, jun., who has long had entire charge, and who has consented to con- tinue his services for the yeais, at a moderate salary. Power is taken by the Articles of Association to increase the capital, and if it should be deemed desirable, when the remunera- tive character of the manufacture shall have been fully est-ab- lihcd, the operations of the Company might be extended and the profits iucreased in two ways Firstly-Clieiiiical Works might be erected in districts where wood is easily obtained. At these Works the cordwood bought Would be reduced to charcoal by a process which would yield naptha and other valuable products, all readily marketable, at a good profit, while at the same time the Company would ensure a regular and adequate supply of fuel for their furnaces at the lowest possible cost. Secoiidly-By the erection of suitable machinery a large partof the charcoal pig iron produced could be made on the spot into bars, of a quality equal to those exported from Sweden, and exten- sively used in Sheffield and other places. The promoters, however, desire distinctly to- state that the anticipated profits previously alluded to, do not in any way de- pend on the carrying out of these extensions, which are only sug- gested for the consideration of shareholders, as an indication of the way in which, in due time, a larger capital may be advan- tageously employed. A large portion of the capital now required has been privately subscribed, and the rest is offered to the public with the assurance that the undertaking is one of the most bond fide character, and offers every project of a highly remunera- tive return. The only contract entered into by or L vilf of the Com- pany is dated 24th June, 1873, and is .11ade between James Light, senior, of the tirst part, James Light, junior, of the second part. Joseph Foster Lloyd, of the third part, and William Henry Duignan, of the fourth part. A copy of this contract and of the valuation, as well as of the memorandum and Articles 6f Association may be inspected at the offices of the Company's Solicitors.
