This Company has been formed for the purpose of acquiring or working several valuable inventions of Mrs Wood. The first has reference to the employment of compound india-rubber, called Woodite," which it is proposed to use in the protection of men-of-war generally, and especially of ironclads; thus their unarmoured ends and other parts will be afforded better protection than at present provided against hostile attacks of all kinds, and their watertight compartments, in the events of collision or stranding, will be rendered more secure. The difference in the specific gravity of Woodite and that of iron and steel is as 1 to 10, and by using Woodite," weight will be reduced, and much greater buoyancy obtained, the result being greater speed as well as additional protection against the destructive effects of shot and shell. The saving in cost and weight by the substitution of Woodite blocks or plates, instead of steel or iron. may be approximately estimated as follows;- One cube foot of compound 18-inch armour plate costs S18 10s, and weighs 490 Ibs. One cube foot of "Woodite" costs B7 10s, and weighs 50lbs. Therefore each cubic foot of "Woodite" used in place of armour plate would effect a saving of;211, and a saving of weight of 440 lbs. By an improved method of construction ships could be belted or plated with Woodite" blocks, and thus present to shot or shell a highly elastic substance, which will aLow the projectile to pass through it., but will instantly close and prevent the influx of water. The practical value of the "Woodite" protection was fully demonstrated at the Nordenfelt Butts, at Dartford, on September 30th last, by a series of experi- ments against a target constructed to represent the side of a Torpedo Boat, and faced with" W oodite" blocks, which was successfully fired at by the 3 and 6- pounder quick-firing Nordenfelt guns, the effect of which was scarcely discernible on the Woodite," which bact ecmplet-ely closed after the passage of the shot, leaving little or no trace of the point of entry while the iron backing, representing the ship's side, was perforated with boles from 2j to 3 inches in diameter, which, however, were so effectually pro- tected by the" W oodite" tbat not a drop of water could enter a ship so perforated. Torpedo boats exposed to machine-gun fire will, if coated with Woodite," be effectually protected from an influx of water after penetration. The target used has been removed to the Company's office, where it can now be seen. The importance of this invention, therefore, cannot be over-estimated when the increased penetrating power of shot, and shell, and ram is considered. Another invention has for its object the preservation of ships and other floating structures from the effects of collisions with piers, abutments, landing-stages, &c. A patent has also been taken out for a flexible bulk- head, to be fitted as an auxiliary protection in case of accident. Another invention has reference to bilge keels, by the adaptation of which tu ships a remarkable degree of steadiness may be obtained, and the rolling motion checked. The use of expanding bilge keels will cause no obstruction to docking. Another patent is for a double reversible lifeboat of entirely new design and construction. The buoyancy will be increased by a tubular cylinder from stem to stern, in the centre of the boat amidships, and a cylinder on either side of the boat, which forms seats, &c. Tie boat, being fitted with Woodite and cork blocks, will have the maximum of buoyancy, so that no matter how it may be injured it cannot sink, and by an arrangement in the deck, all water is self-discharged by gravitation in four seconds, and both sides being made exactly alike, it is quite immaterial which side up the boat is either launched or sailed. It may be constructed to use compressed air, electricity, or oars This patent is for a single lifeboat dr ven by com- pressed air, electricity, or steam, and can be so charged with compressed air as to run for twelve hours at six knots per hour. In a gale or heavy sea it is very often impossible to reach a wreck for want of motive power. This boat has been specially designed for speed with great stability. All the working parts will be enclosed in a water-tight compartment. All the foregoing inventions have been thoroughly investigated by Sir E. J. Reed, K.C.B., M.P., Vice- President of the Institute of Naval Architects, and late in the Admiralty as Chief Constructor of her Majesty's Royal Navy, as well as by other experts and practical men of the highest authority. The Company has entered into a contract to pur- chase five of the above-mentioned inventions, and to obtain a licence to manufacture Woodite under the patent, and the power to grant sub-licences. It may be confidently expected that from royalties, licences, and the sale of designs alone the profits of the Com- pany will be large. It is anticipated that the sale of foreign and colonial patents will rapidly return the whole of the capital. As the company will possess the monopoly and exclu- sive right of constructing under the five patents, even if the system is adopted for men-of-war only, the return for royalties, &c., will more than return the whole capital yearly. The inventions have been brought under the notice of her Majesty's Government, and the Lords of the Admiralty have requested drawings and plans to be sent in for inspection also experiments have been made at the request of a foreign Government, which have proved most satisfactory, When the system comes into use a steady income will be receivable for royalties and designs without any out- lay or risk by the company, and the directors put forth this prospect with a strong conviction that the under- taking will prove a highly remunerative, safe, and permanent investment of increasing value. The vendor has agreed to transfer to the company the patented methods of construction, together with all future improvements and also grants a licence to use the Woodite patent for the purposes of the com- pany, and trade mark, subject to one penny per pound weight royalty. No promotion-money has been or will be paid. No contracts of any kind have been entered into, except one with the vendor, dated October, 1886, which can be seen at the Company's Solicitors'. Office. or at the vendor's solicitors' Messrs pyke and Minchin, 2, Metal Exchange Buildings, E.C., and two agreements with the said Naval Architect and Secretary of the Company respectively, which can be seen at the paid Company's Solicitors' Office, dated 22nd October, 1886. The vendor pays all expenses up to allotment, ex. cept the alaries of the naval architect and secretary, from 25th August, 1886. Where no allotment is made the money will be returned in full. Plans, models, and detailed drawings can be seen at the Company's Officos, where also prospectuses can be obtained. 1665 f ttblir Apptrintnunts. 0RICKHOWELL UNION. The Subscription List will be closed on Thursday, the 28th of October. PAYMENT TO BE MADE AS FOLLOWS 10 per cent. on Application. 10 per cent. on Allotment. 80 per cent. on the 1st of December. 100 This Capital is required, first, to complete the final payments of the Construction Account; secondly, to redeem all Royalties and provide further facilities for ecpnomically carrying on the Works and, thirdly, to provide adequate working capital. The Debentures will be secured by a mortgage deed, with first charge upon the Company's Works and Premises—made to Trustees acting on behalf of the Debenture holders. The security offered consists of the entire Works, situate on a piece of land about 10 acres in extent, with 99 years' lease-rent 20 per annum—having a river frontage and siding on the Great Western Rail- way, the total cost of building, equipment, and starting of which has cost £ 22,000. About half of the amount of the debentures will be subscribed by the present shareholders. These works have been constructed for making Glass Bottles under the latest and most improved method, by the continuous melting process (under the Patents and Licence of Mr Frederick Siemens), which produces superior glass to that made under the old system, at a very greatly reduced cost. A portiion of the Royalties due to Mr Frederick Siemens has bebn redeemed, and the remainder will be compounded and paid for immediately these Deben- tures are subscribea. Established Bottle Works, which do not combine our aduntages-in cheap raw material, position for ex- portation, and a practical monopoly of South Wales and diitriet-show handsome protits. Messrs Lyon Brothers, recently converted into a Limited Company, with a capital far in excess of ours, state the profits in working Siemens' Patent are 18 per cent. The amount of capital subscribed is E20,000. An abstract from the Shipping World and copy of Mr Head's (Mr Frederick Siemen's Manager) report aie attached to this prospectus, which will explain the specially favourable position of the Works for the manufacture of bottles. With respect to the demand for bottles, there seems to be no question that ample orders can be obtained to keep the works fully employed, there being large buyers who are themselves prepared to take for next year's delivery a large portion of the bottles that can be made at remunerative prices. The Works were too late in starting this year to enable the Company to obtain any contracts, and consequently they have been dependent on small orders obtained here and there from people who had not chanced to contract fully up to their wants. Prospectuses may be had from the Directors, or the National Provincial Bank-Cardiff, Newport, Swan- sea, or Bristol-or of Messrs Thackeray and Co., Cardiff. 1612 iOultliratíouz.
