CARDIFF MUNICIPAL ELECTION. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE EAST WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, It becomes my duty to return into your hands the trust you were pleased so freely and so emphatically to confide to me at the beginning of my present term of office, and to state that, in the event of your deeming me worthy of the continuation of your confidence, I am prepared, to the best of my ability. to watch over your interests in the spirit of independence, of progress, and of an inviolable integrity. I remain, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours respectfully, THOMAS REES. 35, Richmond-road, Cardiff, October 15th, 1886. 1688 ARDIFF MUNICIPAL ELECTION, 1886. TO THE BURGESSES OF THE SOUTH WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— Mr Evan Jones having signified his inten- tion not to seek re-election on the 1st November, you will be called upon to elect someone in his stead. After mature consideration, I have acceded to the invitations made to me to become a candidate for your suffrages. Strong and energetic support has been promised me- that was one of the chief inducements leading to my candidature. I am no stranger. I have resided in your midst for over thirty years. It is because you know me well that I feel sure you will be satisfied that, should I be returned as your representative, I will do my best to promote the interests of the ward and of the borough. I am, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, F. J. BEAVAN. Bute Docks, 20th October, 1886. 1638 "VTORTH WARD (MUNICIPAL) ELEC- TION, 1886. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE NORTH WARD, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— In response to a requisition, signed by nearly 200 Burgesses, residing for the most part in the Hafod District of our Ward, I have pledged myself to go to the Poll on the 1st November next, and thereby gain for the Ward, and especially the Hafod Section of it, a representative from its midst. As to the other sections of the Ward-Morriston and Landore—notwithstanding all the arduous attention they and their wants required, and have received, at the hands of their most efficient representatives, Messrs Williams and Freeman, they are still in a much neglected state. Sadly more so are those of the Hafod and strong is the feeling there that no one can adequately represent their wants to the Council and Town at large except a person who has actually experienced them. That I conceive to be the reason why I have been asked to come forward. The matter of the lighting—or rather Egyptian darkness—of the Hafod is, in plain terms, a crying shame," and the roads-they are in a deplorable state. These shall be the first objects of my attention. I will advocate—AGITATE is the word-for an increase in the number of Councillors, and do all I can to see that the inquiry into the alleged encroachment on the foreshore is pursued vigorously. I will go in for strict economy (no income tax allowances), for remedying the grievances of Hafod, Landore, and Morriston, and outlying districts and for all matters affecting the welfare of the town generally. And if, after the first three years of my Councillor- ship, you find I have not redeemed my promises, then I beg of you for the future to have done with Yours most respectfully, HERBERT MONGER. Aberdyberthy House, Hafod, October 2nd, 1886. 1723 SWANSEA MUNICIPAL ELECTION, 1886. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE WEST WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— I have decided to comply with the repeated re- quest. of a considemblenumber of burgesses to become a candidate for a seat at the Council Board of our Borough, and I now beg to offer you my services. I have been a resident in our town and intimately connected with the trade of our port for over 22 years. I have no personal ends to serve. I am perfectly un- fettered, and free to form and ac upon an independent opinion, and to support such measures as would be of the greatest benefit to the Burgesses. There are many much-needed Reforms and Improve- ments which demand earnest consideration, such as the Reassessment of our Borough, the Extension of Boundaries and Increased number of Councillors, the Maintenance of our Foreshore Rights, the condition of our Market-place, the state of many of our Roads, attention to Water Supply and sanitary arrangements, and efficient control and supervision over our expendi- ture, having always in view the reduction of our present heavy rates to the lowest possible limits. In addition to the above, any matter tending to the revival and extension of the trade of our port should have my most careful consideration and support. I shall take an early opportunity of explaining to you my views more fully and should you favour me with your confidence and support, and return me as one of your representatives on the 1st November, I shall do my best to deserve your future approval and continued confidence. I am. Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, MORGAN TUTTON. Bryncerrig, October 20,1886. 1769 Jjuilbíttg Societies. TO DEPOSITORS IN THE CARDIFF S A V I N G S A N X. Girls are admitted into this school from 10 to 20 years of age, and are educated for businesses, profes- sions, or home life. Their success at the University and other public examinations proves that good work is being done in this school. This last year alone 100 Certificates have been gained, with many honours and distinctions. The girls have passed in as many as 12 subjects, including German, French, mathematics, literature, drawing, music, book- keeping, geometry, perspective, and everything useful. A bronze medal was also awarded at the International Exhibition iScience and Art) for water colour painting, and five certificates of merit for crayon drawing and various kinds of needlework. Fees for boarders, including tuition, scholarships, prizes, and preparation for any University Examina- tion, the guineas per term. Day pupils, one gi'inea. Over 100 testimonials from the parents of pupils in all parts of Wales, Monmouth, Gloucester, Corn- wall, London, etc. N.B.—Mrs Nicholls begs to caution all persons inquiring about this school not to allow themselves to be influenced by anyone who, from interested motives (such as keeping a school themselves, &-c-), unjustly prejudices them against it. They are invited to fry the school and judge for themselves of its merits. She also particularly wishes it to be understood that the girls have full liberty to attend their own places of worship—Church or chapel-subject to their friends' approval &L-o that a liberal table is leept (the food being good and abundant); that a large, well- ventilated house and every comfort is provided for the pirls-their entire exemption from sickness, and their chserful, healthy appearance, bearing witness to the truth of these statements. Mrs Is. regrets she has found it necessary to publish this caution. 1085 OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.
