MARY STR.EEr, ARDIFF. QPINIONS OF THE PRESS: From THE COURT JOURNAL, October SOth, I, In the midst of the present trade stagnation Mr A Stedall, the well-known mantle maker, is one of thfc few tradesmen who cannot have much leason to com. plain, his nnmerOlls hhops in London and the provinces being crowded with ladies. Especially is this th calW with his metropolitan mantle show-rooms, which are hives of activity nurveying for the thousand and one tastes. The principal contributing cause to Mr Stedall's success is that he is himself the manufacturer c-f the goods which he sells retail to the public, and is thereby I enabled to offer exceptionally reasonable terms to those ladies who favour him with their patronage. From LIFE, September 23rd, 1S86. One of the signs of the times is the extent to which the seller of manufactured goods is becoming himself the manufacturer. Competition is so keen. and prices are so low, that it is 01'1) by this means that business can be doue with satisfaction alike to the customer and the tradesman. Shopkeepers with limited means, who are obliged to buy from the manufacturer, cannot sell at as low a price as the shopkeeper wh,) is himself the maker; b"t the public are determined to buy cheaply. I see, therefore, in all departments of trade large shopkeeping firms who avoid inter- mediate profits by manufacturing their own goods. Mr A. Stedall, the eminent mantle-maker, is an instance in point. He tells us tuat it would be impossible to supply goods at theoprices at which he sells them if he did not manufacture them himself. Mr Stedaii em. ploys about a thousand men and women in the pro. cesses of manufacturing aloue, while manual labour is supplemented by cutting and sewing machines driven by gas-engines. He is thus in the enviable position of being able to produce goods in the most perfect manner at a cost which enables him to defy competi- tion both at home and abroad. Mr Stedall's estab- lishments in London are well known, but his enterprise appears • to know no limit, and his branch establishments throughout the country are being constantly increased. New branches have just been opened at Exeter and Bath, the frontage at the latter place boasting, as I am told, the largest sheet of plate-glass in the world. Large premises are just being completed for tlia pur. poses of a branch shop at Cardiff, and a handsome block of bnildings is alsu being erected for Mr Stedall at Leicester, business conducted or, such a scale, while it will naturally be remunerative to the producer, can- not fail to offer advantages to the consumer not to u. obtained under other conditions. From THE LADY'S PICTORIAL, October Oth, I3S6. Mr Stedall, the well-known mantle-maker ill L.uidon and in the provinces, has opene,l new branches in Exeter and Bath. We hear on g, od authority from the latter place that the front ge of Mr Stedall's estab- lishment at Bath has the largest plate glass 111 the world. If all the manufacturers in England were as enterprising as Mr Stedall, the canti-oversey about free trade and protection would soou disappear. Mr Stedali conducts his immeuse business with such a tact and ingenuity that he can defy competition both at home and abroad. While he employs over a thousand men and women 111 his manufactories, he sells his goods retail to the public, and thus puts in the pockets of his patrons the intermediate profit. Let us hope that several other English manufacturers will soon follow the example of this energetic and enter prising business man, and thus put & stop to the indua of foreign goods. v A.
