----.----------------TRANSFORMING…
TRANSFORMING INTO FLATS. Novel Use for a Merthyr Catholic Church. We learn that the Roman Catholic Church in Georgetown will, when the new edifice has become ready, towards the end of the summer, be applied to a. use novel, at all events, ee far as this part of the country is concerned. Mr. Reea, the centractor engaged in constructing the new church, has purchased the old building, and it is his intention, we believe, to transform it into flats, suitable for the occupation of the working classes. The idea, it seems, is to divide the church into separa-te dwellings, each complete in itself, and all served by a eemmon staircase, or inclined plane. The experiment will be an interesting one, and, doubtless, will [ be popular with the class directly affected.
REPRESENTATION OF MERTHYR.
REPRESENTATION OF MERTHYR. There seems to be an impression prevalent among some of the Radicals of the Merthyr Boroughs that the resolution of the Conserva- tive party to contest the constituency has been inspired by a suspicion that W Mr. -mAaisv-n entire misapprehension, for such a con- "Cmgency as the junior member's premature resignation was in no way contemplated when on Tuesday the party decided to run a candidate, their course of action being dic- tated solely by tlie considerations that a general election may possibly be sprung upon the country within the next few months, and that it is well to be prepared in time so as to be able to make a good fight. Mr. Pr it chard Morgan has been sounded by a pness representative as to whether he con- templates retiring or not, and he has given ail emphatic assurance that he means to hold on. Mr. Alfred Davies, of Hampstead, is credited with a determination to come for- ward at the next election whate'er betides, but definite inform.ation upon this point, will probably be forthcoming in a few days, because the London alderman, it is reported, has arranged to pay a visit to Mbrthyr in the course of the ensuing week. Mr. Allen Upward, in an interview given to a Merthyr pressman, intimates that he is willing to present himself again as a candi- date if the working men desire his services, but that the only ground upon which he could come forward would be that neither of the sitting members sufficiently identified himself with the cause of labour. r

MADAME PATTI. The DaiLy News says :-A report has during the past week been current that Messrs. Ha.rri- sen had arranged with Mr. Irving: for three special performances of opera with Madame Patti as prima donna at the Lyceum this sum- mer. We have authority to say tha.t the news is very premature, although there is a strong possibility that Madame Patti will introduce to London this aesaon Signor Pizzi's one-act opera, Gabrielia," which she has already played in the United States.

A meeting of the Cardiff Exhibition Commit- tee was held on Friday evening at the Town- hall, Cardiff, under the presidency of the mayor (Councillor W. J. Trounce). Deceased was an old and valued servant of the Imperial Maritime Customs, having come out to take up the post (which he filled to the time of his death) in 1869 from London, where he was employed in the Thames Water Police. Mr. Howell was born in Wales, and disting'uished himself by the mtelligence and energy he dis- played in the discharge of bis duties. He was highly appreciated by his superiors in the service, and was a great favourite with acquaintances and friends. He entered a good deal into the life of Shanghai, and was for many years ax active and energetic member of the fire brigade, having been foreman of tho Hong Ken Company for a considerable time. He was often of great assistance to captains and pilots on the river, with the navigation of which he was intimately acquainted. Mr. Howell, who was only 54, had been ailing" a long time with liver trouble, but his constitution was so strong that his friends were hoping he would pull through. However, he took a turn for the worse, and died a.s stated,

LONDON AND GENERAL BANK.
LONDON AND GENERAL BANK. The Press Association is authorised to state that in February next another dividend will be paid to the creditors of the London and General Bank, with which Jabez Balfour was connected. Some months ago it was thought possible to pay dividends amounting in the aggregate to 10s. in the E, but so well nave the calls cf 30s. on the f,5 shares been responded to, and so promising are some of the assets to be realised, that the committee of investigation have come to the conclusion that they will ultimately be able to pay 20s. in the £ to every creditor. For the shareholders, however, there is no hope of a single penny being paid. It is anticipated that years will elapse before the final dividend is I declared. _„ „

-ITHE TRADE OF SWANSEA.
I THE TRADE OF SWANSEA. Annual Meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. The annual meeting of the Swansea Chamber of Commerce was held at the Town-hall on Fri. day afternoon at four o'clock. Mr. R. D. Burnie, M.P., vice-president, took the chair, and there was a fair attendance. ANNUAL REPORT. Mr. E. P. JONES (secretary) read the annual report, which stated that The number of members on the books was 149. The revision of railway rates was the first subject re- ferred to in the report, which stated that what had been conceded would mean a considerable extension of the powers of the Railway Commission, and, if adopted, should prove of much utility to the trading public. It was to be hoped, however, that the policy would be further developed. Referring to the Bhondda and Swansea Bay Railway, the report expressed the tw hope that nothing would be done between the trust and the company which would hamper the staple trade of the harbour, but the situation with respect to the use of the lines was a difficult one. The questions of expenses of port sanitary authorities, the South Wales mails, additional railway communication with London, Great Western coal rates to Swansea, coal shortages to I'rench ports, stemming at Great Wes- tern tips, election of trustees by ballot, and increased harbour facilities were amongst the other subjects referred to in the report, which concluded with the usual interesting statement of trade. TRADE OF THE PORT. The following particulars have been kindly furnished by the statistical department of the ifegjtt.i j' Ocr\rABDS. Ii Vessels cleared 4,666 4,543 4,37i Registered tonnage 1,500,039 1,465,767 1,109,483 Exports (tons) 2,216,418 2,214,614 1,846,064 The total trade for the year (2,806,209 tons) shows a falling1 off of 2- per cent. as compared with that of 1392. The export trade has more than held its own but the imports are some 10 per cent. less tha.n last year, the decrease in this I department being found chiefly in iron ore and copper ore. On the other hand, the imports of gram and kindred commodities have increased 21'6 per cent., and the exports of flour ha.ve assumed an im- portant place in the return—totalling over 9,000 tons. The exports of tin-plates a.re 22,404 tons better than last year, the shipments to the United States show- ing- an increase of 13,650 tons. The improvement in this department would have been much greater but for the fact that the exports to the States have been very much curtailed during the last few months owing to the uncertainty which prevails as to the fate of the M'Kinley tariff. With regard io coal ship- ments, it is most satisfactory to find that, whilst, owing to the general disturbance in trade, a consider- able decrease is shown by other i>orts in the Channel, the shipments at Swansea (1,459,475 tons) showed a slight improvement on 1892, and a record only second to the unusually good one of 1890. This is a signifi- cant circum stance, and full of encouragement for the future. The report was adopted. COLLIERY GUABANTEES. It was decided, on the motian of Mr. MOFFATT, to act in concert with the Cardiff Chamber on the question of colliery guarantees. The meeting then terminated.

A REMARKABLE DREAM.
A REMARKABLE DREAM. A singular application was heard by his Honour Judge Sir Horatio Lloyd at Chester County-court on Thursday. In 1864 Edward U rmston, a Chester licensed victualler, died, leaving £5ö to each of his seven children. In 1874 the daughter, Mary, disappeared, and the executors in November last paid her share into the court, in order to ascertain whether she might not be assumed to be dead. On Thurs- day Mr. Caldecutt, solicitor, produced the long- lost daughter under remarkable circumstances. He said that on New Year's Eve she dreamed that a cousin of hers, a Mrs. Saunders, residing- in Liverpool, had died, and she was so uneasy about it that she called at her aunt's residence in Leader-street, Liverpool, to verify her dream. She discovered that her aunt had removed to Russell-street, Liverpool, and I through her she first heard of her father's bequest. Mr. Caldecutt applied that the daughter's share might be paid over to her less the costs, and his Honour immediately granted the application. ptfcww—m"^mm1——

If IHow Balfour was Taken.
If I How Balfour was Taken. '1 DETAILED ACCOUNT OF THE ARREST OF THE FUGITIVE. Jabez was Surprised at His Arrest but ( the British Consul Promised Him Justice. Through the agency of its Secret Service the Morniii.g has received the following account eupplemeating the meagre particulars that have reached this country by the usual channels, oi the manner in which Jabez Spencer Balfour was taken. In a werd (says the agent) Jabez Spen eer Balfour was taken by surprise. Arrived at Jujuy—the commissary of poliee, the British Consul, and the secret service ageat of The Morning-it did not take us long te find the place where Balfour was said, in a phrase qt which I do not profess to see the precise mean, ing, to be living "in semi-Sultanic luxury." But Balfour, himself, was not there. Net at that mement..By a coincidence, however, it happened that he was that day expecting visitors, and when the commissary said he had come to see the senor on business we were allowed to pass the pickets we met on our way t< J the house. So we had no occasion to resort to an elaborate subterfuge as the commissary w as for doing in order to get into th e house. It was a simple misappreheueio-n-and apprehension. Passing through the grounds we were struck by a number of huge conservatories that had been erected for the cultivation of rare varieties of the orchid, which here also assumes i the epiphytal habit, and grows wild in the open air in spikes or panicles. For a man who is said to be living in "semi-Sultanic luxury "he seemed to find time to do a. good deal. Indeed, we die- covered as soon as we entered the house that the old spirit of enterprise had not forsaken him for this semi-Sultan, if you please, was away attending to the business of a brewery that lie is managing in the neighbourhood. That information seemed at ence to make th« commissary of police suspicious. And thor« was more excuse than that; for as we passed through the hall on our way to the luxurious drawing-room-iio half-measures about that- we noticed a number of packages in the hall, addressed J. S. B., BOLIVIA. That was almost too much for the commissary of police, who asked the Consul if he saw that, but the Consul turned it off by pretending that the commissary was directing his attention tf the inscription stamped on the hall mat—it wtK. the beautiful motto of the Liberator scheme- Libera sedes liberum facit." A free home makes a free ma-n," indeed! Evidently Balfour was not without a sense of humour. 11 It is the opinion of me," said the commis- sary of police, once we were alene in the draw- ing-room. that the bird, he is to 'fly t6 Bolivia." But we were net left long to ourselves, fat presently the door opened, and there entered- not Jabez Balfour, but a servant, bringing 6 magnum of champagne upon a silver salver. T'Hr 'I '—^ that his master, who wai badas?T»*a- 9 £ peUot eoui« At -t-ha-t tlie C° • • J. I, restrain iuqmu, and bewneou Ins se^ t etn no expressed again hit opinion that Balfour had gone to Bolivia. Not a bit of it, however, for after a few minutes Balfour himself walked proudly into the room, carrying in his hand (as I noticed when he put it on the table) a c.py of Sander's "Reichenbachia." There was a smile on his appropriately florid face-in which my fancy detected a grotesque resemblance to an orchid—when he came forward to shake bands with us, saying— "Gentlemen, I have been expectiigyoufor e, some days." Then he begged us to be seated. Now, gentlemen," he continued in the same genial way, what will you take ?" "Què hombre." said the commissary ot police (who had no sense of humour), thinking that our host-for the time being-was offering to bribe us with money. Will you take a glass of champagne f h*, said, addressing us generally. "Ceme, now, have a wine just arrived from England that ] should like you to try. No ? Well, what shaL it be? You must take something." We will take you." said the British Consul deliberately. "What do you mean?" saidBalfonr, trying to laugh it off as a joke. Then, as we all lookec at him freezingly, he seemed to have a momen- tary misgiving. I hope," he continued, with assumed buoyancy, that I am correct in be- lieving that you gentlemen have done me tlu honour to visit me here for the purpose ot relieving me from further anxieties of tht brewery, which is now, I assure you, a geed- going concern, yielding a net profit of-wha.t shall we say P-ot not less than fif We propose to relieve you, sir, of tv«rj anxiety respecting your aftaivs here ——" Except the orohids." as, s he. fondly, alli evidently easier in his millÜ. The orckids-I shall take with me to Bolivia." Bolivia!" ejaculated the commissary of police.. But you are not going to Bolivia, said the consul. ft Excuse me, I leave here this afternoon. "Precisely," says the consul, "but Mtfc- Bolivia." Then the consul, with a politeness tha.t commissary of police himself could not have celled, explained the business upon which N,* had come. Fie, gentlemen," aavs Balfour, firing up. I am ashamed of you You have been guilt; of dissimulation, foq which I hope Heaven may forgive you. I never can." Then, adopting what may be called a Houaa of Commons man, ner. he added. Gentlemen, Argentina, I all happy to say, is a free country, and I ha.Te tito distinguished honour to wish you a very g.o< day." But we are net going without you," said the Consul. Our men are at hand in case assist- ance is necessary," What do you say ? Shame upon yeul Shame upon youHave you no respect for the law or for eld age ? As the representative of her Britannic Majesty Queen Victoria, I appeal to you. sir "-he turned to the consul—"I claim your protection as a British subject. The British Consul was iron. "Ilook to you. sir, saia Jabez, extending his arms to the commissary of police, afford me the protection that I have the right to expect m a free country ? The commissary of police was granite. Jabez Spencer Balfour wat: never more fervent in his demands for what was right. He askea me as a man and a brother if I thought he had been treated even with common honesty. Hera was he or the threshold of a new life—here wa.s •3 future opening for bim that he had hoped to crown, at no distant date. by beceming Minister of Finance to a free and inde- v pendent Republic was he thus suddenly to be deprived of everything that maao existence pleasant ? Was it fair to violate the sanctity of his domestic hearth in tins fashion r The notion of a secret treaty was disg-ra.ceful- it was a. mean, cowardly, contemptible; dirty trick. It was un-English. It was uii-Christian. He asked for the consideration that any man, the richest or poorest, might demand in th- name of huniMutv—justice. Justice surely ht Lac^a right to expeet. Ho asked for no mor< than that. The commissary of police assured oua m ttt name of his Government that he should get it I and the 'ttif!h Consul added that he might w sure of it oncc he v as back again to England. And 1'1.11 that assurance the whole world ULIiJ: he content. 9
