Saturday's Matches.
Saturday's Matches. WHAT CHANCE SWANSEA HAS WITH NEWPORT. How Bristolians View the Visit of the Cardiff Team, Whose Third Line They Think the Best in Existence. Swansea expects to be able to put their full strength—with the exception of Alf Lewis, for. ward-into the field against Newport on Satur- day The interest felt in this important match is nothing like so great as in previous years, owing to the lack of confidence in the team The fact that the Jameses are still debarred is a keen disappointment. Earlier in the season Swansea's chances against Newport' in February were looked forward to with confi- denee, but the form of the team is now confirmed by a long series of matches. Although not bad, it is not up to that of Newport. The fact that the forwards and halves could do nothing against Bristol last Saturday—for the Swansea backs never got the ball, whosever fault it was —has afforded ample corroboration of the Swansea men's calibre. They will, however. play a good, hard game, and the match will undoubtedly be a very interesting one if these departments get and retain the ball occasionally. Dear Welsh Athlete,"—It's always interest- ing to know what persons outside Cardiff think of our team as a whole or our three-quarter back3 in particular. This is what last Monday's Bristol Times and Mirror says :—" No ene should miss seeing Cardiff on Saturday. They have about the finest three-quarter line in existence, and are in grand form this year." This is an outsider's opinion of our players, and one endorsed by scores in other parts. Cardiff will have a grand reception on Saturday, and I am confident come out of the fray with flying colours.—Yours, &c., BLUE AND BLACK. From the Cambrian Daily Leader I learn that efforts are being made to resuscitate the old Excelsier Club—the last holders of the Swansea District Challenge Cup. In their day the Excelsiors were able to give the best teams in the district a warm time, and they had the distinction of shedding from their ranks some of the best known men, not only in Wales, but in England as well. Bill M'Cutcheon played for them, so did Dilly Thomas, the late Oldham half, and Charlie Coke was another three-quarter. Bancroft was their full back, and amongst their forwards were Frank Mills, Sammy, Rice, and Arthur Lewis. The effort to revive the team is being put forth chiefly by Jack Morrisb, who invites would-be members to a meeting at the Market Coffee Tavern on Monday night. Lancashire have been making one or two changes in their team ta meet the Midland Counties. Liverpool, probably on the strength of the good show the forwards made against Newport, has a pretty fair representation. The committee appear to have determined on trying one or two experiments, and a team, with a fair sprinkling of old "una," has been leavened up by the insertion of a few young 'uns. The match t akes place at Moseley on the 21st inst., when the following will represent the Palatine — Back, Foulkes (St. Helena): three-quarter backs, Valentine (Swinton), M'Cutcheon (Old- ham), Lees (Oldham), and Andertou (Leig'h); half backs, Varley (Oldham) and Walsh (Sal- ford) forwards. Bingham (Liverpool), Pea.rce (Liverpool), Jolley (Wu-rington), W sod ward (Tyldesley), Simpson (Rechdale Hornets), Jones (Salford), Case (Swinton), and Ridehaugh (Roch- dale St. Clements). In the second of the English Internatiena Association matches, that against the Welsh- men, to be played in North Wales, on Monday, March 12, the English team, as will be noticed, is composed exclusively of amateurs from the Southern clubs, the names being as follows :— L. H. Gay (Old Brightonians). goal; A. H'. Harrison (Old Westminsters) and F. R. Pelly (Old Foresters), backs A. G-. Topham (Casuals), A. H. Hossaek (Corinthians), and another, half backs R. Topham (Casuals) and I.. C. Gosling' (Old Etonians), right wing', G. 0. Smith (Old Carthuaians), centre, J. C. Voitch (Old West- minsters) and R. R. Sandlande (Old Westmin- sters), left wing, forwards. After the decisive beating Cardiff gave Roger- stone in the semi-final of the South Wales Association Cap one would ha.rdly think much interest wauld centime in the meeting of the two teams on Saturday. The Rogerstone men, how- ever, despite their bad beating a week ago, are very sanguine, and a correspondent, writing from Rogerstone points out that they had bad luck last Saturday, and hope to do better this time. Well, there is nothing like being san- guine, and I hope the Eogerstsne men will make a better fight of it this time, although, as I said before, Cardiff, in my opinion, are a bit too smart for any of the South Wales teams. Apropos of Association, I may give the infor- mation that a trip will be run from the East to Swansea on the 24th iust., on the occasion of the Ireland v. Wales International Association match. The Washington habitues -have started a billiard handicap, which is, I understand, an open one for amateurs. The game is 250 up, the prizes being •.—let, value JB3 2nd, jE2 and ■3rd, The entries close on Saturday next. A number of the best local amateurs have, I am told, entered. The O'Brien—St. John affair seems to hang i fire a lot, which is somewhat surprising con- sidering that St. Johti issued a challenge which O'Brien immediately took up. Now the boot is on the other foot, for O'Brien comes out with a challenge, and, as will be seen from this morning's Ma il, is trying hard to bring matters to a climax. As matters now stand St. John's backers have either to get to business or back out igno- njinionsly. Failing satisfaction in this quarter, O'Brien will, I hear, look further afield for a match. Another local pug who is anxious to show his ability is Mike Sullivan, whc issues a. challenge to Jinks, of Cardiff, to spar for a small stake in either a. twelve-round contest or for endurance. Perhaps one of the most important decisions arrived at during the recent meeting of the N.C.U. was (says the "Star") the concession of one championship meeting during the rac- ing year which would be open to both amateurs and professionals, and we imagine that tho ranks of the latter will be proportionately swelled at the conclusion of ea<ph meeting held under such conditions. Those amateurs halting between two opinions will no longer shiver on the brink of former objections (in the light of their ad- judged performances), but will take the pro- fessional plunge with boldness and despatch. At any rate, such meetings will offer a great temptation. "X. X." wishes to know the highest stake ever run for on the Ely Racecourse. So far as I can ascertain it would J),e.four or five hundred pounds, that being on the occasion when the Grand National Hunt. Race was run here. More trustworthy information, however, .might be obtained from Mess'rs.* Gottwal+x and Bowring, secretaries to the racecourse company. Doubtless, it will he within their memory or they will have a record of it. I WELSH ATHLETE.

.-GRAND OPERA AT CARDIFF.
GRAND OPERA AT CARDIFF. Mr. Joseph Parry Enlogises the Rousbey Company. The history and progress of dra.ma,tic musical art has been a. most remark able one. and that with all the musical nations of the world. ever since the very first opera" L' Amina. e Corps," by Peri, 1550--1515, and I may also say Monteverde, 1568—1645. were pro- duced. Aud be it remembered tha^ the f?Tc«t mastÐn itye na the other high forms of our art, such as the full orchestral symphony, the mass, a.ud the oratorio, gave ns also the grand opera form, and our greatest masters cf ail countries still continue to do so. The composer of the "Messiah and 21 other oratorios gave us also 44 operas. Mozart, who gave U8 his divine masses stud symphonies, gave us also his im- perishable "Don Giovanni," Magic Flute." &c. The same might be said of Gounod, Verdi, Sullivan, Mackenzie, Cowen, Stanfford, and a noble army of others. Feeling as I do a keen interest in the dramatic music of my own native country— little Wales, so full of dramatic instinct—and having pro- duced myself two operas in this very opera- house, and with two others now reirly and waiting their production, I naturally appreciate fully the visits of all companies who plaj high-class works in this great form of our art, and hope the day may come when Wales will follow other countries and nations with her operas based upon her history and her heroes. I, therefore. have m'lch pleasure in calling attention to the rare musical treat to all lovers of high-chaw operas in the Royal this week. South Wales musicians owe much to the popular and genial lessee, Mr. Fletcher, for.thus bringing- here companies of such great merit and standing. Mr. Arthur Rousbey's Company arc this week giving two rare works, among others, by two of Italy's greatest living geniuses. One is C'avalleria Rustieana," by Mascagni, a work of rare merit and conception, with orchestration of great ability. I am pleased to say that this work will be repeated on Saturday afternoon next. "Pag-iliacci" is the other great work, the lastesfc novelty in the musical world, from the able pen of Leen CarolJo. which was per- formed on Thursday night. It is an opera full of inventive genius. I may safely say hare that Mr. Rousbey's Company is the most complete which now visits Cardiff. He has a fine staff of artistes, an excellent chorus, and a complete orchestra, and the ensemble is very good. Mr. Rousbey is himself, of course, the central figure, and his various parts display his excellent dramatic and vocal powers. It is the rare musical and dramatic treat which he is afford- ing us which has made me offer these few re- marks. JOSEPH PARRY. Fra Divaio." The present operatic season at Cardiff bids fair to eclipse all previous records for variety of programme and large attendances. True, the audience at the Royaloll Thursday evening' was not so large as that whioh has filled the theatre at the previous performances this week, but, nevertheless, it was thoroughly representative. The chief charac- teristic of Donizetti's Fra Diavolo," which was presented by Mr. Arthur Rousbey's capable company on Thursday night, is its absolute disregard for consistency-prayers and ballets, comedy and tragedy, order and disorder—all follow each other in a beautiful mingling of accord and discord, of regularity and irregularity. But, if the book itself is centrary, the music is rich with Donizetti's nsual melody, and it was enthusiastically received. Mr. Hilton St. Just did iull justice to the part of Fra Diavolo, and distinguished himself in his singing of the serenade in Act 2. Mr. Frank Onslow, as Lorenzo, gave an excellent representation, and Mr. W. H. Montgomery imparted the necessary humour into the character of Lord Allmsh. Madam Julia Lennox made here first appearance this week in the part of Lady AlLcanh. and her rendition of the several songs allocated to her was perfect. Marie Titiens, by her brilliant and facile execution, won well-merited applause in the part of Zerlina. Air. F. Clindon as Beppo, Mr. George Neilson as Maiteo, and Mr. A. S. Winckworth, in an out- rageous "ma.ke-up" as Gracino, were all successful. The band, under Mr. Fox's conductorship, rendered efficient service. This (Friday) evening Leoncavallo's master- piece, "I Pagliaaci," the latest and greatest of operettas, will be presented, and will be pre- ceded by the humorous Act II. of The Daughter of the Regiment," in which Miss Minnie Lererent-z will appear as Marie,. It may be montionod tint Mr. Rousbey was the first to present "I Paglkcoi" in the English version. Thei New Act Drop. The new act dree, painted by Mr. William Quick, is worthy, perhaps, of more than passing notice. The subject, which is cleverly conceived and earned out, is a framed picture of Windsor Csistle, set in the centre of a blue satin curtain. The picture itself is a clever representation, both in colour and outline, of the Royal residence, whilst the frame in which it is set shews considerable originslity on the part of the artist in the matter of the mouldings. Behind the centrc-piece the curtain is depicted as being gathered in tasteful folds, each fold being held in position by bunches cf flowers very cleverly and artistically pourtrayed. The sides of the curtain, to give relief to the centre, are of a deep red, with massive gold tassels, whilst the proscenium border of a similar colouring to the wings bears the inscrip- tion, "All the Worlds' a Stage." The whole pieoe is cleverly painted, and reflects great credit on its author, whilst it forms a new, pretty, and pleasing1 picture.

On Thursday afternoon during the per- formance of the Christmas pantomime, Little Be-Peep," at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Birmingham, a disgraceful disturbance oc purred, almost culminating in a riot. Then the rey- sterers rose in a body and created a deafening uproar. The police were summoned and the ringleaders arrested and removed to the lock-up, followed by a disorderly mob.

Where Shall We Court ?
Where Shall We Court ? GENERALLLY IN THE STREETS AND PARKS. A London Editor Thinks This An Evil I and Suggests a Novel Remedy. Where shall we do our courting? Those of us who are not married already will prick up our ears at the question, which has an appro- priateness, not for a day, not for an age, but: for all time. The editor of the "Young M:¡,n"'< —evidently no misogynist, and we. therefore, j pledge him metaphorically in a bumper-has i written an article in a publication called thei "Woman's Signal," and he discourses with ex-t plioitness and reason. At the present moment, we are told, there are thousands of youths who have to do their love-making in the streets. There is no help for it. says the writer. Hi5 a young man living in a dreary London lodg- ing, or in a barrack-like house of business—■ "barrack-like is good and eminently true— meets a girl in similar circumstances, what is he to do? He oannot visit her home, for it is in Yorkshire, and he cannot aBk: her to his father's house, for it is in Cornwall. From one of these estimable counties to the other is a far cry; and if anybody doubt that propo- sition, let him try the journey by a slow train, aud the scepticism will very soon be taken out of him. Therefore, the dejected lovers are doomed to sit in a park if the weather be fine. Your park is about your only free place of recreation in London. Some country people, in their enthusiasm for the Metropolis, say to youths engaging on the big battle of life, "Ah, London is a place; see what recreation you can obtain for nothing!" Experience shows us that this endless store of delight comprises the parks and the British Museum. A great melancholy is apt to be engendered by a studious, consistent, and unrelieved contem. plation of a park, and as for the British Museum-wen, well, every man to his taste. In the winter the sweethearts, we are re- minded, tramp the streets. When it rains he takes her to a second-class cafe, and pays exor- bitant prices for stewed coffee and stale cakes. There is much truth in this. It is the only place they have to sit down in, and the poor fellow, on his slender salary, does the best ho can to show the sincerity of his affection. You can never induce a woman to believe you love her unless you spend money upon her. The thing is impossible, and, in default of any- thing more valuable or more noble, perhaps the stewed ooffee and the stale cakes serve the purpose. But the writer is correct again in saying that they waste money, catch oold, and suffer countless discomforts, nothing but the radiant brightness of a new affection hiding the hideous darkness of their life." What is the remedy for this? "A Young People's Chris- tian Association," says the writer. In tht event of such an institution, he sees "no MORI weary walking of the streets, no more stand. ing at windy cornars to say a lengthy and re- luctant farewell, no more expensive and indi- gestible suppers, no more deathly colds. They can listen to music in the cosy drawing-room, take a cup of coffee in the restaurant, hear, a lecture, read a book, attend a class, or spend u plenum hour amongst the manziner, We admit the present evil, but what about the remedy ? Do lovers want to hear lectures, read books, attend olasses. or study ma^azinea? We think not. What they want (thinks the "Bristol Times and Mirror") is to be by them- selves in a comfortable home, and not be driven to dr-llg about the streets because neither has a, habitabion to which the other may be invited. We have not yet got out of the English character—the grown-up English oliaraoter—the idea that love-making should not '*■ been couraged; and most of the Christian Asso- oiations formed, with the best intentions far the benefits of young people, are affected with a depressing and distressing sombreness of hae. Flirtation is too apt to be regarded as light and sinfui, and the attainment of impossible wealth and prosperity is held out as a necessary accom- plishment on the part of a young man before lie can venture to enter upon the matri- monial state. Imbued with a notion that there is something indefinably wicked about love-making—although, remembering their own fathers and mothers, they do not quite see where the wickedness oomes in—the wretched lovers wander about in a shame- faced sort of way, and all the lectures they hear, the classes they attend, the disquisitions hurled at them, give them no inducement whatever to regard a happy, married, social existence as something to be ardently striven for. It is idle to preach of the next world unless you can make a man or a woman fairly comfortable in this. That seems a broad proposition, but it is true. Young people want more sympathy in their love-making, and not the cold frowns of suspicion and dis- approval. Coffee. classes, and cakes will not meet the difficulty; but a little more freedom and frankness and human nature in dealing with them will do a good deal. The Chris- tian Associations might effect much if they would throw off severity and starchiness, and make their establishments places of pleasant re-union for respectable persons.
