BARON PROFUMO AGAIN.
BARON PROFUMO AGAIN. K Settlement Arrived at in Bristol County Court. The adjourned action brought by the bond- holders of the Provident Association of Lon- don againifcthat a&sociaton was down for hear- ing on Friday at Bristol County-court, before his Honour Judge Austin. There were some 230 claims, amounting to almost £ 3,000, to be brought against the association which Baron" Profumo is connected with, but it was decided that three cases only should be heard as test actions. The plaintiffs were Blanche Rachel Tavener Nash, of Goodhind- street, Stapleton-road, Bristol, widow, who claimed the return of £16 5s. as monies paid under a misrepresentation of fact, and for damages for fraudulent misrepresentation; Louisa Ann Edwards, wife of Charles Edwards, of St. Agnes-road, Bristol, who claimed jBlO 8s. for misrepresentation of facts and breach of agreement; and Florence Norman, whose claim was 29 15s. Mr. Reginald Wans- bffyjirr-V* "PrvVo^n ^licitOTS, Bristol) reprisentea tim luaiotnis, and Mr. Ghittv, barrister, London, was instructed to defend. The case was fixed for an early hour, but it was not until nearly two hours after I the court opened that the action was men- tioned, and then his honour was informed that there was a consultation between the parties with a view to settlement. The parties concerned in the action, however, made their appearance before the judge later on, the "baton" looking careworn and ill. being also in court.—Mr. Chitty, who was for the Provident Association of London (Limited), addressing his honour, said that there had been a lengthy consultation between the parties interested, and he must ask his honour's per- mission to allow the cas&s to be adjourned sine die.—Mr. Wansbrough offered no objec- tion, and the application was granted.- We understand, however, that the result of the conference between the baron," his repre- sentatives, and Mr. Wansbrough was that the association has agreed to pay over three- fourths of the money contributed by each of the bondholders, who make a statutory decla- ration to the effect that certain facts were misrepresented by the agents of the associa- tion.
A PREMATURE FUNERAL
A PREMATURE FUNERAL Intense excitement was created in Burton-on- Trent on Friday by a most remarkable occur- rence. The death was announced on Tuesday of Mr. Charles Wileman, 61, a well-known public man, and the funeral was arranged for Friday. Thousands of people assembled at the cemetery, and the mourners and coaches went to the house. It was then ascertained that before screwing the coffin down signs of life presented themselves. A doctor was called, and after careful watching these symptoms were confirmed, and the funeral was abandoned.
Nonconformist Grievance.
Nonconformist Grievance. A meeting of the Pontypridd Nonconformist Ministerial Union was held on Friday a.t the U Town-hall, the Rev. W. Lewis presiding.- The question of religious services at the work- liouse again oropped up. The decision of the guardians at the workhouse to allow the Ohurch of England to have two Sunday morn- ings a month for the holding of their ser- vices at the house, leaving the remaining two Sunday mornings for the whole of the Non- 30nformist denominations in the district, was strongly condemned. It is probable that a strong deputation will be appointed to wait upon the guardians at the next meeting.

SWANSEA MUSEUM. Interesting Letter from Mrs. H. M. Stanley. Mr. H. M. Stanley has just forwarded certain African curiosities to the Royal Institution, Swansea, with the following letter of explana- tion :— 2, Richmond-terrace, Whitehall, S.W. The Little Wooden God is from the Southern Mabode Country, and was found with a band of Pigmies, who had probably stolen it. 11 The Arrow is out of a Pigmy quiver, which was taken from a Pigmy, near Fort Bodo, December, 1888. The Knife is such as the Pigmies use, and was probably purchased from the Mabode Tribe, with meat, or a monkey skin. "The delicate Wire Coils are a manufacture of Bavira blacksmiths, between the Great Forest and the Albert Nyanza. HENBT M. STANLEY." Mrs. Stanley, in the course of a letter, makes the following interesting remarks "I am sorry to send so little to the museum, but each thing I have is unique, and I keep them in a little museum of our own, which we look forward m. Shewing you here swpe day. Some day, perhaps—in the dim and distant future -we may look to the whole of our collection going to Swansea. If ever it should go to any public place, my wish would be that it should rest in the Swansea Museum.

PONTYMISTER DISPUTE. The Strikers Say There is No Necessity For Extra Police. The following resolution has been passed by the Pontymister steelworkers — "This meeting of steelworkers on strike hereby reiterate our determination to aiiide by the prevailing wage rate in other works. Whilst ready to agree to any reasonable mode of conciliation, we are, above everything, anxious not to be the cause of innumerable labour troubles elsewhere. We pledge our- selves determined to do all in our power not to disturb the peace, and so bring dishonour upon ourselves, and express the opinion that no disturbance would have taken place on Christmas Day if a peaceful deputation had been allowed by the polioe to see the men at work. We ask the Monmouth Joint Com- mittee to make an inquiry into the conduct of the police on that and other occasions, and we hereby assert that, as far as we are con- cerned, the authorities are incurring a needless expenditure in maintaining an abnormal number of police at Pontymister."

Had His Grave Dug.
Had His Grave Dug. SENSATIONAL STORY FROM VENEZUELA. Aristocratic Robbers Plotted to Kill their Accomplice but He Found Them Out. The steamship Venezuela, which has arrived from Caracas, Venezuela, brought news of a plot involving forgery and murder equal to anything in fiction. The persons implicated belonging to the highest society, the Venezuelan capital has been in a ferment of excitement. The plot began last October, when the Bonk of Venezuela paid out 40,000 dollars on a num- ber of cheques with the forged signature of C: Hellmund and Co., the largest exporting house in Caracas. Planning the Robbery. In the employ of the firm was Gabriel Lugo, 32 years old, who had been head clerk for many years. He is the son of Dr. Jose Gabriel Lugo, the leading physician of Venezuela, and physician to D'Andueza Palaeio, ex-Presi- dent of the Republic. He has a brother named Manuel Felipe Lugo, six years his junior. Gabriel is much the finer looking. He is of medium height, wears a brown beard, and is rather delicate in physique. Manuel bears a strong resemblance to him, although he has only a. moustache. Acoording to private letters and newspapers which hav- arrived for prominent Spanish- Americans, the plot unrolled itself like this: The two brothers secured a man named Roberto Rodriguez toa-saist them in the forgery. Gabriel, with his knowledge of the firm's business, gave numbers and vouehom,so that every bogus cheque presented to the bank, being properly num- bered, was cashed without suspicion. In due time the forgeries were discovered and the accurate knowledge of the firm's affairs which they displayed directed suspicion so strongly toward the Lugos that an anonymous letter, now known to have been, ■written by Rodriguez, was sent to Hellmund and Co. This is it:- "Gentlemen,—The forgeries by which yoa have been victimised were committed by a foreigner who came to Venezuela and in- vested his meney. He lost it all, and hoping to recoup his losses, forged your name. I am the unfortunate man. Farewell! When you receive this I shall be far away at isea," The Accomplice Hidden. In spite of this the Lugos were arrested. They had hidden Rodriguez away. and with- out his testimony the police were powerless to ooiwiet. A few days before Christmas the Lugo brothers called on Rodriguez in his place of hiding. The latter said lie wanted to give himself up and confess everything. The Lugos pleaded with him. They implored him to think of the great disgrace it would be to their distinguished family. The Lugos asked him at last if he would leave the country. Rodriguez consented, if they would make all preparations. A few days later they again called on Rodriguez and told him that the preparations for his Apa-ture had been delayed and that the police were on his track. They advised him to change his place of living. They drove their unsuspecting tool in a. carriage to a liouse they had boughfc in thp out-skirts. This was about 8.30 p.m. December 2o. un arriving at the empty house Manuel stopped with Rodriguez in the hall while Gabriel Lugo went inside. They locked the outer door. Rodriguez heard Gabriel's voaoe in conversation and became suspisious. "Who is speaking to Gabriel?" he asked, nervously. Only my unole>" answered Manuel. This uncle's name is Francesco de P. Lugo. He is 42 years old, tall, thin, but very mus- cular. He has been more or less a gambler far twenty years. Rodriguez, who knew the uncle's character, became more suspicious still. To allay his feait they gave him each a revolver and said: See, we are not armed." Rodriguez laughed at his own fears, and put his pistols in his pocket. He Smelled the Poison. There was a bottle of brandy on the table and four glasses. Gabriel filled them. Then the uncle came into the room. This scene was taking place in a back room. "Drink to the safe escape of Rodriguez," the three cried. When the glass reached Rod- riguez's lips he smelt prussic acid. Dashing the glass to the floor, he faced the Lugos. When Francisco saw the poison had failed, he jumped over the, table and aimed a dagger blow at Rodriguez's chest. Then a fearful struggle began. Gabriel held Rodriguez while Manuel and the uncle tried to-stab him. The only light in the room-a. candle—was extinguished. In the darkness the four fought on. Rodriguez was stabbed many times. He succeeded in freeing himself and broke out of the room. He ran into the parlour, and fired three shots while running as an alarm. On reaching the parlour he saw something in the darkness. He fired and hit Manuel in the arm. Then he broke a window. He was very weak from loss of blood. He called out gaspingly: "Help! The thieves of the bank are killing me!" Then he fell from exhaustion just as policeman, attracted by the shouts, buret the door. Before the offioer could reach h: the uncle made a final thrust and gave Rod- riguez his severest wound. The gendarme put Manuel and Francraoc under arrest. A few seconds later there wm heard shouting in the next house. Another gendarme went there, and found Gabriel in the custody of the houseowner. He had escaped from the rear, climbed over the wall, entered the next house, and was trying to wash off the blood in the water-cooler when the pro- prietor found and held him. A Newly-dug trave J The police searched the empty. hotlgfcs. tm the rear yard they found an open grave, newly dug. By its open mouth lay shovela, ropes, and all things necessary for the hasty burial of Rodriguez when lie had been killed. Rodriguez was taken to the hospital, where he was still in a critical condition when the steamer sailed, but he had recovered suffi- ciently to confess all. Many of the other relatives of the Lugos have been arrested, so highly wrought is public opinion, though there are no charges ag-ainst them. Dr. Lugo has four other children, two boys and two girls. Manuel married a weakhy woman .-cine years ago, and started busines* on her money. He squandered it. and sinet has been living by his wits. Gabriel and tin, uncle are also married.
