Football Gossip.
Football Gossip. "PUNCH" OBLIGES US WITH A BIT OF POETRY. Gloucester are Not Disposed to Accept the Rulingof the County Union on the Question of Professionalism. Although I have never run the risk of reading "Punch" I have always thought it had some semblance of comicality about it. Alack, the day An old landmark is removed. A correspondent sends me the following, which he assures me appeared in the alleged funny organ last week. Hold your breath, please: — Taffy is a. Welshman; Last year, like a thief, He at Cardiff, his house, Took John's laurel-leaf?" Taffy came to John's house, Birkenhead, and John, This year, give him tit for tat; And so the game goes on. "Free Lanoe," in the "Merthyr Times," writes a column of criticisms on the Welsh nterna-tional game that contains one or two interesting points. Not the least interestng is that on our tackling. He says:—"No team can play the Welsh game for years with- out losing in tackling power. When Welsh club meets Welsh club the tackling is usually feeble, for the reason that no one expects the man to be tackled to keep the ball once his pursuer is fairly on him. In these ciroum- stances, the pursued transfers as best ..e can. Now the English teams, which have but re- cently adopted the Welsh formation, continue to expect the man in possession of the ball, to travel as far as he can by sheer pace or weight, consequently their tackling is thorough. This difference in the way of tackling was very marked in the recent match between Cardiff and Black heath in the Rectory Field. Two of the tries got by Fegan were due en- tirely to the fact that the CardifEans when they held him expected the ball to be passed or put down, whereas he placed all his strength in an effort to shake them off and suoceeded in doing so." There is no denying that such is the fact, and yet it is hard to explain why it is. Weak tackling has been our downfall on many occa. sions. I have repeatedly pointed it 6ut. And yet it is impossible to assign any reason for it. It is a puzzle truly. Sir,-Excuse me trespassing on your space, but I have no doubt that Mr. A. J. Davies, the hen. sec. of the Harlequins Football Club, would be pleased te see a good attendance of specta- tors on the Roath enclosure on Saturday to see the match between two young teams, viz., Cardiff Old Boys and Abercarn Harlequins. I am sure it would please the Old Boys, who, it may be mentioned, have had the loan of the ground for the day. Hoping this will be a hint to football enthusiasts, I am, &e., CAPTAIN OF OLD Boys." An old jaomber of the Pontypridd F.C. "A Member of the Committee," and a. few odd correspondents suggest in a casnal sori of way. I that Pontypridd had not their full team out on Saturday. Indeed, several of them go even so far as to enumerate the men who were absent. But why ? I much mistake my Rhondda friends if they are not sufficiently sportsmanlike to take a beating without attempting to excuse the same. Do you know I thought I had the exclusive right in matters of this kind? At least the Westerners tell me so. My Rhondda friends, I will slate you in a mild manner by saying that I am a bit disappointed with you; therefore do not let it occur again. Sir,-In view of the admirably-combined and excellent defensive play of the Cardiff three- quarters in the Glamorganshire v. Yorkshire match at Swansea, and the weakness of the Welsh quartette in the International match at Birkenhead, I would urge upon the match com- mittee of the Welsh Rugby Union the import- ance of selecting at least three of the Cardiff three-quarters, viz., Elliott, Pearson, and Biggs, with A. J. Gould, for the encounter with Scotland. I am well aware that Biggs was off colour in the match with England, but, for the matter of that, so was Gould, and I certainly think he deserves another trial, especially if he goes into training. I held the opinion before the match committee made their selection that the above-named Cardiff three-quarters should be picked, and had they played I believe they would have made a far better show than those selected.—I am, &c., WKLL-WISHKR. The draw for the ties in the Mallet Chal. lenge Cup Competition took place on Tuesday evening, and resulted aa follows :— FIRST ROUND. A.—Winner of qualifying round v Grangetown. B.-Canton v Stars. It was decided to award cap. te all players who have represented the Union in three matches. A special committee meeting of the Gloucester City Club was held on Tuesday night to consider what steps to take with reference to the pay ment of the penalty of £ 10, inflicted by the County Union for alleged infringement of pro- fessional laws in offering She well, a Stroud player, inducement to play for Gloucester against Newport. Minahan and Kiddle, who with Shewell were suspended for a month, gave evidence declaring their intention to appeal against the sentence, and after a discussion it was unanimously decided to ask the County Union to re-considw the decision arrived at on Fridav. GLAMORGANSHIRE CANAL ;
GLAMORGANSHIRE CANAL Strike of Boatmen for Altered Conditions in Their Contracts. A section of the boatmen employed on the Glamorganshire Canal, numbering about fifteen have struck for altered conditions in their con-' tracts, involving advances in the prices paid per ton. The dissatisfied bargemen ply 111 the Merthyr and Aberdare Valleys, and they came down in a body to the Canal Offices, Cardiff, on Monday, and had an interview with Mr. Lewis Llewellyn, the manager of the canal. Mr. Llewellyn declined to entertain their proposals, of the formulation of which be had not received previous intimation, and the fifteen expressed tlioir (latermiur-tioii to discontinue work. Mr. Llewellyn thereupon proceeded to make arrange- ments by which the barge service should remain unbroken, and we understand the strike has not up to the present had any material effect on the business of the company, who :,ADIOY in the ] aggregate abaut 200 m«.

CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST.
CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST. Deputation to the Taff Vale Railway Company. On Tuesday several members of the Cardiff Harbour Trust Sub-committee waited upon the directors of the Taff Vale Railway Company at their offices in Queen-street for the purpose of discussing the formation of a harbour trust for the port and eliciting the views of the board in regard to the scheme. Mr. Arthur Guest (chairman of the company) presided, and nearly the whole of the directors were pro- sent. The corporation was represented by the mayor (Councillor Trounce), Alderman Richard Cory, and Councillors Johnston, Shackeil, J. H. Cory, Morel, and Tucker, and the town-clerk (Mr. J. L. Wheatley). The deputation was very courteously received. Mr. Guest stated that the directors had given some considera- tion to the question of forming a harbeur trust, but the only information they had before them was what appeared in the press, and they hardly understood the nature of the scheme. Several members of the deputation spoke upon the importance of the movement in the interests of the trade of Cardiff. Many of the strongest arguments in favour of the forma- tion of a trust were put forward. The com- mittee were not yet prepared to enter into details. They were anxious in the first place to have preliminary interviews with the representatives of the various interests in the port in order that they miafht have some idea as to their views on the subject. Mr. Guest and other directors stated that the Taff Vale Railway Company would throw no obstacle in the way of the accomplishment of the scheme, but they would like to know what other cam peting companies were prepared to do before giving a definite answer. The pros and cons- of the scheme were disoussed at some length, and in the most frank and open manner. by the directors and the members of the depu- tation, and the latter came away with the con- viction that, as far as the Taff Vale Railway Company is concerned, there is nothing to prevent the scheme being brought to a success. ful iasne. Some of the directors of the company stated after the interview that the formation of a harbour trust weuld, unquestionably, benefit the town, and they hoped to see it formed. Getting In to Society.
Getting In to Society. AMERICAN LADY JOURNALIST'S EXPERIENCE. An Expensive Luxury Which u Only be Obtained by Wealthy People. I was agreeably disappointed in Juacry the lady who had intimated her witlinguesa to chaperon me for £ 2.000. She was not hy any means such a cald-blooded bargainer at I had imagined her to be-that is, she die not look it. A more aristocratic, refined, anI) interesting woman 1 had -riovex met. Sh-e candidly explained that she was in great neee of money, and obliged to either increase her income or diminish her expenses. Uunlike one of my other correspondents she was unable to refer to any American girl whom she had chaperoned, as she had never before attempted to make money out of her eooial position; but she confidentially assured me that some of her friends made suoh use of their influence, and she saw no reason why she should not do the same. We discussed the pros and oons of the matter over our tea. I was promised not only a social position, but a husband. Just who the gentleman was my hostess did not say; but she knew he oould be secured. But not for the £2,000. Oh, no. That sum of money would take me only as far a,- Buckingham Palace. In fact, it would no* even take me there; for, besides my ohaperon'i salary, I must pay the house-reet, carriage hire, with such incidentals as butchers' and bakers' bills and other little accessories that in three months would certainly amount to over £ 1,000. Then there was my wardrobe. The lady suggested that it would need re- furnishing, and she knew of a wonderfully clever West-end dress-maker. The presen- tation gown, the bouquets, boutonnieres for the ooaohmen, a string of pearls for myself, because they would be girlish and simple, and all that: for these and many more things another £ 1,000 would not go far. And how much do you oharge for the husband?" was the abrupt question 1 felt inclined to put. But 1 only said sweetly, If I really got married 1 would not forget you, of course." She answered laughingly, You might make me a present, you know." So the result of my interview was, that I was to pay out between JB4,000 and £ 5,000 for a "se&aon" in London, introductions into the best society, and a presentation into Court. It was more than probable that during my career as a sooiety belle some poor, but fascinating young, middle-aged, or old nobleman (no matter what his a.ge so long as his lineage was correct). would fall deeply in love with me, lured on, possibly by my chaperon's representations Jl la" I e-ranehes outWesfci Then I would marry him and be an ornament to society, and 1 would give Lady- a little » present of a cheque or a houae in Park-lame, or even some land in the far Western State where my herds grassed pacefully on a thou- sand hills. Surely the purchasing power of UM "almighty dollar" was not to be despised. From the Family Solicitor.* Thinking to further increase my fund cl infouoation, I answered several advertisement* that seemed to refer to the ^c'tcuie i had taken in hand. In the financial column of a morning paper I found this:—"A lady of title wishes to borrow £ 1,000 for six months. Would act as chaperon to roung latfy." I wrote to the address given, repeating my American heiress story. I stated that 1 was looking fai a chaperon, and was willing to give in- stead of lend JS1,000 to the proper person. My answer came from a solicitor's otfioe. It rrod "Madam,—My olient, feeling, as you doi the delicacy that exists in the matter, fcaf handed to me your letter of the 10th inst., and has desired me to communioate with YO"; thereon. There is no question that she is in a position to do what you desire; and as it is somewhat difficult to arrive at any conclusion by correspondence, I would suggast that yoii allow me to meet you with the view 0, thoroughly discussing the matter. I should be glad to see you either at my office or youi house; or. indeod, as ladies are admitted 31 the —— Club during the hour of afternoon tea it might be convenient if the interview took place theN\, where without any undue obser- vation I oould arrange a meeting with my client." Other advertisements to I replied were somewhat of this kind: A lady of good position, speaking several languages, expects to spend the winter on the Continent, and is willing to chaperon one or two young girls and receive them into her liome on her rertwrn to London. When I wrote to the advertiser! most of them stated that they would prefer an American girl to travel (iid live with them. "The Candid Friend." When I oonimenoed say investigations 1 did not start out with a lantern searching for an honeet man bwt I thank 1 found him by answering this advertisement: — A family of good position will give boM^ and residence to ycung I at in West-end. Will chaperon her if desired. In reply to the letter, in which I frankly, confided all my social aspirations, 1 received a note that seemed likely to destroy one of the most valuable oommejcual qualities that 1, a's a, journalist, had luijierto possessed— cynicism. Here it is — 1 "Dear Madam,— Under the peculiar cir- cumstances, 1 am sure t&at it will be bet.! that we commence our negotiations by show, mutual t-rurtt in eaoh otiier. 1 therefore g you my full address a,nd write in my '0 name, feeling sure that you w- appreciate my motives and keep the kjjowladge to yourself. You can readily understaed that in our position we do not want the matter to become public property or the subject of talk. I am a. Q.C., and was, until the recent general election, for several years an English M.r.. My wife could, A think, introduce you into good Knglish soeieifev, but not into titled eocietv. which 1 know js aimed at by many American,ladies, but :1) reality is only gained by the assistance of the meedy nobility—mostly dowagers with small nw?ans aiikl "marketabli liandlas" to their naiu#s. You, I think, will soe that it is not praoo tieable to give exact teems, as you asked for in your letter, without much more information than can be given in any letter. however explicit. Could you arrange, therefore, to call here at any time (we do not object to a. Sunday) and see my wife and biyself. when doubtless we could ccane to some pleasant arrangements and undeestandng Oh, Diogenes! what a pity you did not read the advertising columns of the morning papers.— Jilimbetii M.
