Mrs. Martha Owen, of 22, Cross-street, Dow- lais, applied to the Merthyr magistrates on Wednesday for assistance in endeavouring to discover the whereabouts of her child, William James Owen, aged eleven, who had been missing from home since the 19th inst. She said that the boy left the house at 8.30 on the morning of the date mentioned with the ostensible intention of going to school, and it was afterwards found that he had taken away his best clothes, and pawned them at the shop of Mr. Joseph Harpur. The stipendiary referred the applicant to the members of the press. The child has light hair and dark eyes, and when he disappeared he was wearing a dark plaid cloth coat, corduroy knickerbockers, a dark cap, and brown woollen stockings.
BRISTOL THEATRE ROBBED.
BRISTOL THEATRE ROBBED. Thieves are Smartly Captured by Cardiff Detectives. An exceptionally smart capture was made by Detectives Stephens and Davey, of the Cardiff Police-force, on Wednesday morning. The officers were at the Great Western Railway Station meeting the ten o'clock train from Bristol, when they noticed two men carrying bundles and who seemed to be acting rather suspiciously. They followed, and took the men into custody and escorted them to the Central Police-station. There they gave the names of John Blake and Thomas Smith, and said they were Bristol men, who had come to Cardiff to find work. Their bundles, they averred, con- tained their working clothes. On being searched, one man was found to be wearing a couple of pairs of trousers, in the pockets of which were some stage trinkets, &c., whilst both bundles contained a varied assortment of ladies' clothes and new boots. The Bristol police were telephoned to, but had not received a report as to the loss of the property described, but the men were detained, and about an hour later a message was received from Bristol to the effect that the Old Theatre, King's-road, had been broken into during the night, and the articles found on the men taken away. Later in the day the Bristol police received the prisoners, who will be taken before the magistrates in due course.

GALLANT SWANSEA BOY.
GALLANT SWANSEA BOY. He Rescues a Drowning Lad at Rosario Harbour. News has just reached Swansea of the gallant conduct of Charles S. Whyatt, second mate of the barque Foxhound. It appears that whilst the Foxhound was being loaded at Rosario, for Swansea, a little boy fell into the dock, when young Whyatt nobly dashed after him, and after considerable difficulty, when both their lives were endangered, he succeeded in rescuing the drowning lad. Whyatt deserves every praise for the true British pluck he displayed.

IN BARRY ROADS." TO THR EDITOR OF THE EVENING EXPRESS.' Sir.—Snrelv, the fate of the Vanduara must re-call that of the gallant four-master, the Drumblair, which blew ashore on the rocks at Sully Point a few years ago. In this case alto it was reported that ;-he her in Barry Roads." The fact is, "Barry Roads" is a misnomer. Until the influence of mighty ealitalists dubbed it "Barry Roads." thus in- timating that vessels might ride at anchor there safely, no seaman who knew this coast would have anchored a little ketch in such an unsafe ground, and now, forsooth, to bolster up the Barry Dock and Railway, there are Barry pilots who run the risk of losing human lives and thousands of pounds of underwriters' money by anchoring bigvvessels in Parry's so- called "roads." How many vessels whiofi drag their anchors there are saved ir. the nick of time, I wonder?—I am. &c., CALL A SPADE A SPADE.

SUNDAY GOLFING AT PENARTH
SUNDAY GOLFING AT PENARTH Father D'Huist of Barry Champions the New Movement. Perceiving- in the "Evening Express'" on Wednesday that some of the Sunday goif- players at Penarth were described to be Roman Ct-haolics, and indulged in the game after attending morning' service, a reporter of t-he Evening Express called upon the Rev. Father Em. D'Huist, the new clergyman of the Barry Dock Roman Catholic Church, at the Presbytery, Cadoxton, during the day for the purpose of ascertaining his views with reward to the new Sunday move- ment. In the course of conversation, Father D'Huist, who is a native of Belgium, and, therefore, fully accustomed to Continental life, said he would* be sorry to encourage indulgence in anything that was bad on the Lord s Day, but who was to determine what was good and what was bad? Who was to say whether golf- playing and such innocent games were sinful or not on the Sabbath? Personalty, he saw^no harm whatever in games of the kind, whether played on week days or on Sunday. The gentlemen at Penarth attended Divine Service in the morning, and he certainly questioned the right of a few individuals to set themselves up as censors, and to say that it was a sin to indulge in a game of golf on Sunday afternoon. He (Father D'Huist) was, no doubt, imbued to some extent with Continental customs, but he very much doubted the courage of those who ventured to say the Continental conscience was altogether bad so far as the observance of the Sabbath was concerned, and that the English conscience was altogether good. At the same time, he would not care to introduce practices into this country which were contrary to the customs of the people.

The "Connecting Link." í.
-L. The "Connecting Link." í SOMETHING VERY MUCH LIKE HERE. Landor s Description of the Ugly Hairy Ainus the Oldest Race in the Northern Hemsphere. Some new light on the most primitive of primitive races in the northern half of the earth has been given to the world by A. H. Savage Landor, an Englishman who made a visit to Hakodate, which is on the island of Yezo, and is the northern treaty port of the Japanese islands. There he found borne. queer specimens of semi-human kind known ae the Hairy Ainu. The Ainus are probably the 'lowest down" in the scale of hnima-nity of aaiy living race. Mr. Landor had heard that no solitary traveller could possibly make a t<v«r of the island, but be succeeded in doing so, and gives some interesting ethnological facte in a narrati ve pu blished by him en trued, | "Alone with the Hairy Ainu. The Aim is described as having no similarity whatever to the Japanese and Chinese type of mca. The oo-laur of the 8kin is light red di sh thrown. The eye is particularly contrasted to the Mon- golian eye, having a similar form and setting to that of North Europeans. The haarv skm is supposed to indicate a uortmern origin. The eyes are very impressive and show the < emotion's in a.n interesting- way. In adults AS AINtF MAN. the hair is black, wa.vy, and inclined to form large curls. The emotions are expressed by slight changes of posture or gesture, but the Ainus do not care to show their feelings they have no senæ of shame, and even fear arppeajg hardly known to them. Their history for the last 2,500 years is to a certain exteoi known. They were supposed at one time to have occupied the Japanese archipelagoes to have been driven to Yezo, when they main- tained their independence until the ninth oen. tury, then besoming subject to .Japan. Taea fierceness gradually left them, and they aj-s nuw among the most peaceable and submissive of the earth's inhabitants ait Yezo. It. ileir number is estimated to be about 17.000. The women do most of the hard work, but the men when hunting can walk forty miles a day with. out fatigue, although they usually prefer to ride. ponies being plentiful and of a good breed. In moving a load or heavy object the Ainus never push, but always pull towards them. They appear to use the feet and toes very freely to help their hands and fingers, and they readily employ their teeth, preferring to pull with the teeth than the hand when an unusually heavy haul is necessary. Their appearance struck Mr. Landor as exactly like AN AINU WOMAIf. the re-constructions of the primitive man at Northern Europe, and many of their move- ments re-called those of the anthropoid apes, which are the only creatures that have been thought of as the possible "connecting link" between men and their fellow animals of a lower grade. They are an extremely Slthy people, both in their persons and huts. They seem to have an acute sense of smell, dis- tinguishing between the odour of an English- man and a Japanese, but oblivious to their own very marked perfume-an intensified form of the "peculiar odour of an uncleaned monkeys cage." The sense of touch is singularly dev fective, and even when the extremes are painful they cannot distinguish the sensation of heat from that of cold. Their hearing is very acute. They are small in stature, although larger that the Japanese. >■■————I LLLL'IHMIII II MM—
