THE TRADE OF CARDIFF.
THE TRADE OF CARDIFF. Figures Show an Immense Increase in Exports. At the Cardiff Town Council meeting on Monday Councillor Morgan Morgan stated in effect that the export trade of Cardiff had been fully developed, and that last year there was a decrease in the quantity of coal shipped. Councillor Morgan, however, forgot to explain that the decrease was entirely due to the strike of colliers which took place in August and September of that year, and lasted for five weeks. As the shipments from the port average some- thins: like 300,000 tons per week, it is not surprising that there was a decrease amounting- to 526.000 tons in 1893. This year there has been an unprecedented increase in the ship- ments, and, unless something unforeseen occurs, such, for instance, as anotber strike, therp. is a probability of the quantity being two million tons iri excess of 1893, and one million tons and a half above 1892, when the, highest quantity on record was shipped. The figures will, therefore, work out roughly as follows 1892 (the record year) 13,596,000 tons. 1893 (strike year) 13,070,000 „ 1894 (estimated) 15,070,000 „ In order to support the estimate which we have taken for the current year we have only to state that, if the present mouth is only up to the average, the first eight months of 1894 will show an increase of one million and a half over the same period of last year. It must not be forgotten either that only a portion of the strike period is included. When about two years ago the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce sent a deputation to the town council in order to point out to them the neces- sity for increaeed dock accommodation, the estimated annual increase was put down at half a million tons. It will be seen from the above figures that in spite of the strike that estimate was far below the mark. With these facts before the public Councillor Morgan Morgan can scarcely justify bis statement that the export trade of Cardiff has reached its full development.

ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SHOW. At Monday's meeting of the ftrdiff County Council it was mentioned that the promoters of the path and West of England Show wished to receive an invitation to hold their 1897 show at Cardiff, and a similar Request, was made by the Royal Agricultural Society to hold their 1897 meeting in the town. It was decided to extend an invitation to the latter society for 1897, and to the Bath and West of England Society for the following year.

BRASS BAND CONTEST AT SWANSEA TO THE EDITOR OF TH* EVENING EXPREW." Sir, I notice that in your report of the recent brass band contest at Swansea I am made to say, in my adjudication of the open sect-ion, that "the beet band was the band that was awarded the second prize"; and as I also notice that the above statement has IÍWiD rise to some controversy, which is much to be nqgretted, will you kindly allow me to prevent its continuance by stating that the above remark was made regarding the second section contest only.—I am, Ac., 1. 8EW BLOOD FOR THE COUNCIL,
8EW BLOOD FOR THE COUNCIL, Proposed Arrangement Between Polit'cal Parties at Cardiff. 1 The necessity of improving the personnel of the Cardiff Corporation is forcing itself upon the more thoughtful business men of that body, and- in view of the November elections Conser- vatives and Liberals alike have shown a dispo- sition to put politics on one side and use what influence they possess to induce men of recog- nised ability and commercial capacity to allow themselves to lie nominated when occasion offers. An attempt was made last year to bring about this result, but. notwithstanding the fact that many of the older Liberals favoured the course, the association raised a quibble in reference to something which was done or alleged to have been done by the Conservatives some years ago. As Cardiff grows the respon- sibilities of the corporation increase, and the greater, need is there that the affairs of the town should be entrusted to men who have minds above simple parochial mediocrity. Although the movement to improve the statins of the council obtained its initiative within that body, there are
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. The Silver King at Cardiff Theatre Royal. White sympathy can be wrung from. human breasts and pity be shed from human hearts, so long will "The Silver King" repeat the success that, has attended it from itg iirst production to the present. The sensational history of "Wilfred Denver" has lost none of its interest as the years roll by, and teirs-hot, scalding tears—fall as freely at each presentation of the pJay now as when "The Silver King" was rich with the first fruits of novelty. Of the many impersonators of "Wilfred Denver" thail,, have apjjeread in Cardiff, none resemble the original creator of the part (Mr. Wilson Bar- rett) so much as Mr. Felix Pitt, the successful exponent of the role in the present production at the Theatre Royal. One has only to close one's e'voq to be perfectly deceived. In the second scene of Act IV., Mr. Pitt's description of his torturing dreams is delivered with won- derful feeling and force. Miss Grace Edwin's "Nellie Denver," .although graceful enough, lacked emotion. Jaik«s is delightfully played by Sir. Edward George, who invests the part. with a wea.lth of quiet humour, and the other characters are capably acted. The large audlenoe at the Theatre Royal last- night gave an enthusiastic greeting to the favourite old play, and when the pathetic and singularly beautiful words. "Let us go in home," brought down the curtain, the cheering was prolonged and emphatic. several well-known tradesmen and commercial men who heartily support the suggestion, and vvill do all in their power to assist it, indepen- dently of political views. The resolution passed by the council on Monday, on the harbour trust question, makes it more than ever neces- sary that the ratepayers should he represented by men who are capable of dealing with figures vhioh go beyond their own small experience. Two gentlemen whose names have been sug- gested for nomination at the next elections are Mr. Lascelles Carr and Mr. John Duncan, and it has been arranged that deputations should wait upon them with the object of induc- e ing them to become candidates. We under- stand from Mr. Carr that lie will on no account allow his name to be put forward. The state of his health and the business demands upon his time absolutely piecludes his undertaking the work which would devolve upon him as a member of the corporation. We have no doubt the gentleman who have the matter in hand have oth-v names in mind, and, in order that the public may judge of the opportunities which are afforded for improving the status of the council next November, we publish the names of the retiring members, with the wards they representCouncillor W. Evans (C.), Central; Councillor T. Morel (C.), South; Councillor H. White (C.), Cathavs); Councillor Ebenezer Beavan (R.), Park; James Munn (R.), Adams- down; Councillor W. Lewis (R.), Canton; Councillor F. J. Beavan (R.), Riverside; Coun- cillor A. Lewis (R.), Roath; Councillor S. A. Brain (C.), Grangetown; Councillor J. Comlev (R.), Splott.
COAL RATES IN WALES.
COAL RATES IN WALES. The Reported Reduction on the G.W.R. to Swansea. The statement that the Great Western Rail- way Company have decided to reduee their coal rates to Swansea was very much canvassed in commercial circles there on Monday, and, in can. sequence of the local officials of the company declining to confirm the statement, it is not altogether credited. The agitation for the reduction has been so persistent and the falling off in trade from certain districts so pro- nounced, however, that it is believed, as well as hoped, that there is good foundation for the report. Mr. Lowe, mineral traffic manager at Swansea, states that he has received no intima- tion of the reduction.

NEW DEATH DUTIES. How they are Going to Affect Charity Subscriptions. Mr. F. Foljambe, late M.P. for Retford, writes in answer to an application for a sub- scription to a local society: I beg to say that, in view of the clauses of the Budget which will confiscate not less than four years' receipts of income of my successor, I qm obliged to make some provision for the same, and shall no longer be able to assist my neigh- bours as heretofore. OLD MANUSCRIPTS. Lord Bute Preparing a Facsimile of St. Margaret's G ospel Book. It will be interesting to archaeologists te learn (says St. Paul's ") that the Marquess of Bute, to whom they are already so much indebted, is thinking of having a facsimile prepared of the manuscript of the Gospel Book of St. Margaret of Scotland, the wife of Malcolm Canmore. Art, literature, and all civilising influences owed much to Qaeen Margaret, whose figure, in the midst of semi-barbarous surroundings, is a most remarksbie one. The manuscript of the Gospel Beok is of the early part of the eleventh century and preserved in the Bedleian Library, and its beautiful illuminations make it of very great interest.

The entries are exceptionally munerous, and, given line weather, the show will be the very best that has ever been held in ..C..mift. -■ A. GRAND THEATRE, CARDIFF. (i Mr- John Douglass's great drama entitled No M-sn fi Land was most suwe&sfully pro- dueed on Monday evening at the Grand Thoutre. Cardiff. The company is a. werl- sejeeted one, but the two artists whose efforts moot pleased the audience were Mr. Dudley Stuard and Mr. Henry Keene. The former's impersonation of the character of "Max Mars- den" in the island scene rould hardly be im- proved upon. while Mr. Keene, in his prxir- trayal of "Harrv Oatlands," the hero of the piece, carried the sympathies of the audvnee with him from first to last. Special mention should be made of the stonn scene, a mo,u realistic representation of a tropical typhoos. while the concluding tableau, in which Miss Ida. Millias dives from a considerate height into the capacious tank of water to save a drowning friend, appealed strongly vo the audience, who received the feat with voci- ferous applause. The character of "Sdom m Jacobs" is well represented by Mr. Byron Douglas,^ who infuses a lot of fun into his part. "Doctor Buxton," a. man who marries a widow-and, of course, with her takes under his wings a, large family—and "Silas Moore," the villain of the piece, are well pourtrayed bv Mr. Charles Franmore and Mr. Viqhr \Vi<ldiooml>e respectively, and Miss Amv Steinberg makes a very charming "Mrs". Poodle." THE EMPIRES. CARDIFF. With such a big company it is not to be won- cered at that the Cardiff Empire was crowded at each house on Monday evening. Rezene and Robini, the excruciatingly funny gymnasts, back from America, sent the house into screams of laughter. George Robev, a singer of eccen- tric songs, also scored a big success, and the Manrons, in a sketch entitled "Uncle Yank." when they were on the stage, produced fun, fast ind furious. Other capital turns are Bennett md Martell, the Doolans, the Sisters Terry, Miss Chummie Le Mai a, Miss Rose Finetti, find Mr. Edgar Squire. NEWPORT. A programme charming in variety has been got together at the Newport Empire this week. It is headed by the name of Mr. Max Eugene, the well-known operatic bari- tone of the Carl Rosa Opera Company. Mr. Eugene is the latest recrnit. to the variety et-age, and the operatic stage has suffered by the step he has taken. lie possesses an ex- ceptionally fine voice, and it is seldom that I Newportdans have the opportunity of listening to so celebrated a. singer. On Monday night he met. with a grand reception from both houses, and, needless to say, he had to eom- ply with several encores. The pantomimic sketch, entitled "Chips in Japan," bv the Edwin Keene and Kate Reeves Combination was exceedingly funny, and quickly caught on with the audiences. The Risley Kellino Troupe of acrobats go through a very diffi- cult performance with grace and intrepidity, and were loudly applauded. Other artistes who provide high-class and very enjoyable "turns" are Maurice and Ross, in extravagant eccentricities; Miss Frankie Milton, serio- comic; Marion Bell, serio-comic vocalist and dancer; Frank Coyle, vocalist, &c. ,no SWANSEA. The big performance arranged for the delec- tation of the Swansea Empire frequenters, judg- ing by the applause from the remarkably good audiences, met with hearty approval on Mon- day evening. Charles Morritt gives a mystify- ing sleight-of-hand show, his tricks being very smart and novel. During the performance he introduces Scott, of Ardlamont mystery fame, upon whom he performs the missing man trick in excellent style. R. H. Douglas, in a "Pan- tomime in Ten Minutes" is as clever as he is funny. Other good turns are Rhodes and O'Rourke, Irish comedians; Edwin Boyde, character vocalist; the Two Emeralds, seiio- comics', Lily Napper, Tyrolean and light comedy songs: and the highly refined sketch, "The Artist's Dream," by the Three Castles, in which some clever clog dancing and s,tatuesque business are introduced. The efforts of Mr. Stoll and his manager, „ "STOLL'S PANOPTICON, CARDIFF .Mr. Tetlow, at the Panopticon, Cardiff, are being heartily appreciated if the crowds who ■daily find several hours' healthy amusement at the St. Ma,ry-street house go for aught. Pro- fessor ^Devono, with his illusions, "Flora" and "She," attracts large numbers, as also does Pro- fessor Allaby, the phrenologist. The "Maae," "The Chair of Torture," and the wax figures also have much attention bestowed upon them. In the theatorium the O'Gradys, comedians and dancers, Miss Flo Watson, male impersona- tor, Rhyne and Hanson, "The Drolh." and Miami, the Western Rifle Queen, are a number of good turns. Profe-z-or Banvard's leworajna of pictures is also exceptionally interesting.

Dominie and Dentistry)
Dominie and Dentistry) A NEW TERROR OF THE SCHOOLROOM. The Dunces in an Austrian Schoor; Punished by Having Teeth j Extracted. A story is told by the Vienna correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" of a Germau graduate wlw, when delivering his preparatory lecture in the presence of the teachers and scholars of a State grammar school before receiving a class there, began, in a fit of ner- vousness, witl-i the following equivocal sen- tence :The world consists of two classes of fools, respected masters and esteemed pupils." Whether he intended to put a oomria or a colon after the word "fools," was not very clear from his delivery. A colon, however, would,, in tihe opinion of some people, have admirably suited Herr Sonnblick, the head master of a 'school in an Austrian village, who hae just stood his trial for inflicting bodily harm upon such of his disciples as were making little or no progress. The dominie's answer to the charge was that he had, on the contrary, ren- dered very considerable services to the boys in question, for which he deserved their parents" thanks and their own. The facts elicited at: the trial aire as follows: -The profession of village schoolmaster in Austria being extremely unprofit.able, it is usual to appoint to this, responsible post a person who possesses some- auxiliary sources of income—a little land, jm dairy, or some other situation that will not; seriously interfere with his pedagogical, activity, tha.t of lawyer or doctor, for example., Herr Sonnblick fulfilled this condition, inas- much as before his appointment he was a very popular dentist. Whether he possesses a diploima, and is legally authorised to draw human molars, was not asked nor disclosed at the trial. But a, larg-e practice and the confi- dence of one's patients are better than half a: dozen certificates without them- Now, among hi* numerous scholars, who were getting on fairlyl well on the whole, there were no less than terU "dunces," who might have done much better had they only tried. The misfortune was that/ they did not try, and Herr Sonnblick, on the principle that the bird that can sing but will Dot sing must be made to sing, set about-com- pelling them. Being a humane man, filled with a horror of physical punishment generally, and of the birch in partibular, to isa-y nothing: of the rigours of the law which may be invoked against a. flogging schoolmaster, he oaet about for some metMas of reforming the good-for- nothing scholars while actually benefiting: them. The problem might be described as ethioo-pedagogica-L It was while seeking for a solution that he conceived the genial idea. of; examining their teeth and operating upon such of their grinders as he considered decayed or superfluous. The notion deligh.ted him, and. he lost no time in adopting 1.t. Wheet a boy- persisted in not learning his Tepeons, ana in giving a bad example to his fellows, Herr Sonnblick ostentatiously took out all his instru- ments from, the big black case in which tooy t lay buried, and proceeded to rub them a.nd "fix them up" before the school, which, looked on in open-mouth ffi'etiCe, awe-struck tt the eight. Then he caSed up the incorrigible young eoapegraoe, and began: —"Sohmid I you are a. bad boy. You are an ignorant boy, and you'll grow up a bad man, unless I can bring, you to a lively sense of your duty. Now, I won't whip you, Schmid, for I consider that, would be both -useless and cruel. But III render you a service gratis, aud thus heap ooais of fire upon your head. I'm now going to investigate the state of your teeth, .and to" remedy any defect therein which I may notice. Schmid, as pale as a sheet, would 'then be desired to open his mouth, which was wide open long before, and the examination Iwould be proceeded with, under shouts and moans and occasional cries of despair. "It is alleged," said the judge to Sonnblick, when the latter appeared in court in hincapacity of prisoner, "that you drew as many as three teeth from one boy. Is that true?" "It is, my lord, quite true." "Then you admit that you inflicted bodily harm upon your scholars ?" "No, my lord just the contrary. I invariably made it a. rule, no matter how negligent ant lazy the boy might be,, to deprive him of none but decayed teeth; or, if he had none such, then of a couple of his milk or deciduous teeth, which, of course, grow again; so that I really performed gratis an operation very serviceable to the patient-I mean the scholar-for which he would, have had to pay a oonsidemble fee had he gone to town." Moreover, it-might be. further urged in favour of the pedagogical effi-' cacity of tooth extracting, that two-of the ten 1 truants and sluggards, deterred by the-cries of the young patients, or else touched by thei Christian charity of the master, put their shoulders to the wheel and became regenamtel before it was their own turn to present their,, incisors for examination. The judge, how-1 ever, could not take official cognisance*of thitti important circumstance, nor could he accept any of the prisoners' pleas on trust. An ex- pert, therefore, was summoned to- investigate, the fa-cts and to give evidence concerning' them. The well-known dentist, Dr.; G4erilzmam, of Belzig, was the person. chosen by the prosecution for this purpose,: and he performed his task most <oon(?cientiouslyv This gentleman carefully inspected the chil- dren's mouths and the places therein "where* the ivory teeth should grow," and drew up 9, statement full of technical terms, which he read and lucidly interpreted to the court. One- child, he deposed, had lost three of its in- eisors; another its two canines.; a third three of its molars; a fourth two teeth from; 'the upper row; a fifth three from the lower, and to on. Whether the said teeth were decayed at the time when extracted, the ex-, pert not (having seen them was unable to say. But if we into account the inordinate love of sweets and t>f hot and cold drinks which is developed from a very early age; among boys, it is scarcely too much to sajg that Herr Sonnblick's assertion looks pro- bable enough. Be that as it may, the dentall specialist affirmed upon, oath that no harm was done to the health of the patients by the gratuitous operation, and that he was- disposed to regard the results, from a strictly dental point of view, as positively beneficent. It prevented excruciating toothache a:nd crooked teeth, which disfigure a boy. The, sudden conversion of two out of the ten lazy scholars made it furthermore evident that. from a pedagogical point of view, the new departure has bæn attended with equally admirable results, eo that Herr Sonnbliok ,was disdi#gied without the faintest spot upon- his character as schoolmaster or as den- tist.
