<' WELSH MAIL SERVICE. The Up-Mail Train to be an Hour and a Half Later. Mr. J. D. Williams, secretary to the Newport Chamber of Commerce, has just received a couple of important letters from Mr. Henry Lambert, general manager of tiift G-xeat "Western Railway, with reference to a later dispatch of letters from. South Wales, for which the New- port Chamber and others have long been agitating. Under date August 17. Mr. Lam- bert writes:—"We have arrived at a settlement wit-h the Post Office with regard to the mail service between South Wales and the West of England, and a train between Bristol and Cardiff will commence running on the Jet of October next, connecting at Bristol aiid Car- diff with the up and down mail trains." Mr. Williams acknowledged that letter, and asked if Mr. Lambert could furnish particulars of the alterations proposed in the service. Mr. Lain- bert replied on August 20 thus"I am alraid I cannot give you particulars of the altered times at present, as the whole of the details have not been settled. All I can say at present is the up mail train from New Milford will be about an hour and a half .later, and that a. new train will be run in connection with it from Cardiff to Bristol, so as to connect with the up and down mail trains, and that a new train will leave Bristol after -the departure of these trains connecting with the down South Wales mail train at Cardiff." From inquiries made at Caidiff, we learn that the train which has for some years past left the Great. Western Railway Station, Car- diff, for London at 9.5 p.m. will, after the 1st of October, leave Cardiff at 10.4.3 p.m. The time of the arrival of the mail at the inter- mediate stations, both t-c-n Milford and Cardiff and Cardiff and London, will differ from the present times by about an hoar and 35 minutes. Other changes are also to be n-ade in the times of the trrJ.ns from Cardiff to Bristol and Bristol to Cardiff. In October the Great Western Railway Company will also start running two extra trains on the Cardiff ar.d Bristol line. One will leave Cardiff at 9 30 a.m., and arrive at Bristol at 10.57, and the other, leaving Bristol at 1.5 p.m., will arrive at Cardiff at 2.10 p.m. Improvements in Cardiff Station. In connection with the alterations and addi- tions to the Great Western Railway at Cardiff, the two tanks-the one near the feeder which supplies the Newtown yard, and the other in the Penarth-road-are about to be removed, and receptacles of a more improved design and of greater capacity are to be substituted, but in j different localities. The new tanks will be fixed at the docks feeder and at the east end of the Taff Viaduct, near Wood-street.

The London correspondent of a Radical con- temporary says :—I have the bc-t reason to know that during the strenuous scene in the House of Commons in the small hours of Tues- day morning there was wrung from Sir Wm Harcourt a pretty plain intimation that he has had enough of the trials besetting the leaders of refractory followers, and that he intends to release himself from the thankless task by returning to Westminster no more.

THEATRICAL POSTERS.
THEATRICAL POSTERS. Rev. J. D. Watters Explains wfcat Makes' a Picture tndecent. TO THE EDITOR OF TIlE" EVENING EXPRESS^'5 SIR,—There is a .preat difference between :1., i-i a theatre and these objectionable^ "posters." We need not go to the theatre: unless we like, but we cannot avoid seeing these indecent and unwholesome pictures. It is. simply monstrous that representations sos obnoxious to so many citizens should be-, exposed in our leading thoroughfares. There are at least many thousands in Cardiff who consider the pictures in question immoral and lewd, and it is unjust (to use no stronger term) that one portion of the community (I believe a minor T portion) should so wantonly abuse the public thoroughfares. What makes a picture indecent? May I try- to give two definitions out of many ? A picture; is indecent when the scene" it represents couid not also be publicly exhibited. If the scene which these posters represent were exhibited, let us say, on a platform in St. Mary- street, the constables wonid very soon sweep it off as indecent. Just imagine ? for a moment. If the scene is bad, therefore so must the picture be. Once more. Every soene is indecent also if it would shock us to see oar friends in it. No member of the committee would care., to see any friend of'hia, man or woman, whose chastity and purity they held in honour publioly exhibited similarly to the persons in the posters under discussion. Some men do not mind seeing other persons degrade themselves in this way in public view, but they object to their own rela- tives doing so. Is not this cant.—I am, &c., J. D. WATTERS, Chairman of the Social Reform Union. P.S.—I have asked the secretary ofth e Union to send to the members of the theatres com- mittee a copy of our constitution. I am sure its objects will commend themselves. I do not see how we can do without such a Social Reform Union in all our large towns. No good man will ever sneer at it. Perhaps I need scarcely add that our secretary had, of coarse, the mayor's permission to use his name as president. How could we use it otherwise F I am sure be is in perfect sympathy with our Social Reform Council.—j. D. W. — I

I A Piano Playing Feat,i
A Piano Playing Feat,i HOW AN ITALIAN PIANIST WONi A WAGER. One Friend who Watched the Player it III and a Number of Duels May Follow the Feat. The Rbime correspondent of the "Dailv Telegraph" gives details of the inoident;, mentioned in our columns recently, in which- an Italian pianist, (iravangi, for a w a^ery. was reported to have played uninterruptedly on a piano for 25 hours. The writer says: — Many of the musician s friends were horriuecM at the intelligence, and a few, fearing th*: loss of their reason, refused to be present^ during the performance of this extraordi-i nary tour de force. A large number -of mHOj and women endowed with less finely-Btnmgj nerves appeared in, the salon, and GravagnSj took his place at the instrument that wam to be operated upon-, at eleven o'clock ati nigfet. He began with a sdieoSibn from, Bde-tisoven, iMozairt, W-eber, and WegneSy' dropping into Hungarian esardaa aiHTSpaadsh fandangos later on, then getting through noc- turnes, fugues, symphonies, and salon-stucke, and executing two complete operas of Wagner; before the-first oupof eoffeerwae raised to his; lips by his admiring friends and backers. The stakes were prett-y high, and tlie condi- tions oorreapondingly severe, the artist-hewing; reserved to himself the right of but one' hmlf-houej; rest during the 25 hours. A» night merged' into day, and the light of the. wax candles had become sickly and garish, ttea., .Marsala wine, and the yolLc of eggs were gently poured down the musician's throat, he himself hammering away vehemently Ihei while. Towards the evening of the nexti day there was a certain relaxation apparent i in the performance, as if the notes had fallen' into a well and. were being angled for, but this was at once succeeded by a briskness; which brought down the house. The notes rushed forth in a disorderly crowd, as it? were, ,dust as if, like the winds in Ulysses's wind- •bag, they had been imprisoned for a time and were then unexpectedly let loose. Thont |«wei» heard veritable explosions, as from f.Anarchists' bombs, as rhapsody followed; rhapsody, and the piano became the embodi- memt of ? demi-semi-quaver. The artist/ intoxicated with applause, proudly -waived his right to the stipulated half-hour's rest, and- rattled on indefatigaJbJy until at twelve o-clock at night a brilliantly-executed march landed1 him a.t the wished-for goal. He had played- without cessation for twenty-five hours.! The spectators, who bad assembled in consider-! able numbers, Crowded round him, many: shaking his aching hands, which were sadlg; -8woollen and disfigured. Gravagni himself;: "however, seemed brisk and lively, declaring tha,t he did not feel a bit tired; and when some one ventured to express a mild doubt on, the subiect- he addressed, all present, and c<?cr<-d tvaget one thousand" lire that he could go on playing then and there for six hours longer without one minute's repose. The challenge ,being accepted on the spot, a jury of eight well-known musicians were elected, and the artist, resuming his seat, began the strumming process anew. A telegram received here from Milan informed the citizens of the Eternal 'City that Gravagni won this wager likewise, reoeivmg one thousand lire for his pains, so that he has, at least, balm for his swoolleaj fingers and hands. Whether the laurels he hu won are something to be proud of is quite i another matter. The event is causing consider- able excitement, leavened with indignation, in Rome and Milan, especially as it is expected to lead to a number of duels. One of the gentle- go men who stayed up the first night and part of the next day fell ill, and is now confined to his bed. Either he himself or some of hit friends ha.ve, it appears, attributed his suddem iflnelm to the torture he suffered during the musical distance-race, and somebody's seoonds have already called upon him for an explana- tion: of his unseasonable indisposition. Another gentleman is accused of having filled his ears with wadding, fearing an attack of frenzy, and it is said that the artifice would never have been discovered bad he not given incoherent replies to certain questions addressed to him during the performance, one of his remarks, although quite innocent had it been offered in answer to the supposed inquiry, being highly rude to the hero of the day and night. A-, group of unmusical citizens of Milan are about) to protest against the reourrenoo of similar spectacles in future, and one peevish gentleman, has gone so far as to regret the obsolete Swedisk law which banished all musicians, vi-ithout, exception, from the kingdom, and empowered any and every citizen to put all such "offenders" to death. ;v>
