k. A Vision of Next Year. I EISTEDDFODIC SCANDAL. I Gorsedd Said to have Violated an Immutable Law. In connection with the National Eisteddfod ] recently held at Carnarvon a grave scandal, 1 according to a, North Wales paper ("Y ] Genedl"), begins to agitate the public .n;nd < in that town. Several well-known names in 1 eisteddfexiic circles are implicated, one of them being no less distinguished a. man than the ( archdruid ("Clwydfardd"), and another the < recorder of the Gorsedd, "Eifionydd," editor ] of the Welsh quarterly, "Y Geninen." Some 1 will have it that the scandal is still more far- i reaching in it6 consequences, and that even I the reputation and lionour of Royalty itself are affected. The case, we may way, ferine j a sequel to the proceedings at the above- s mentioned eisteddfod. Our readers will re 1 collect that among the candidates for honours on that occasion were the Prince and Princess j of Wales and the Princesses Victoria. and J Maud, who were initiated respectively M "lorwerth Dvwyscng," "Hoffder Prydain," "Buddug," and "Mailt." It will be re- collected also that the Gorsedd where these distinctions were conferred was presided over i by the iachdruid acting in person'f Now, one of t-he immutable laws of the Gorsedd is, one person one name. In other word*, the name conferred on a candidate within the sacred enclosure becomes his or her exclusive possession for ever, or, at least, the right of usage is extinguished only by the bearer's death. At Carnarvon, however, this law is allied to have been broken, broken by no less a dignitary than the Archdruid him- self in conferring the name "Buddug" em Princess Victoria. Sometime in 1860. so the chronicles show, "Clwydfardd" presided at a Goreedd ield at Den- bigh. On that occasion one of the candidates for Gorsedd honours was a. young lady of the name of Price, or Pryse, elaughter of the Welsh litterateur, "Gwerydd ap Rhys," who won the JE100 prize ait the Cardiff Eisteddfod in, 1883. The lady was introduced into bardic mysteries by the name of "Buddug," "Clwydfardd" himself setting, the seal of his authox-ity to the name. "Buddug" is still alive, and resides at Holy- head. She is a distinguished Welsh poetess and authoress of the words, "0 na. byddai 'n haf o hyd." a. song which is one of Mr. Ben Davies's favourites. This lady, who. accord- ing to Gorsedd law, must be looked upon as the real "Buddug." cannot be expeoted to forego a. name she has home so long. It iq for the Goreedd to find its way out of the elifficulty wMcli itself has created. We hope this mav be found, for we should be wrry to see such an ancient and honourable insti- tution as the Gorsedd ruined beyond recall and the veteran "Clwydfa.rdd's" grey hairs brought down with sorrow to the grave, not to mention the disappointment which it would oooasion a young and lovely Princess to be oompelled to relinquish one of her dearest honour*.

THE STEAM WHISTLE,^
THE STEAM WHISTLE Invented bv a Dowlais Man Sixty Years Ago. Mr. T. Criswick, Bridgend, vrrites:—Your paper has upon more than one occasion referred to the origin of the steam whistle. As for many years the inventor was personally known to me, and from his own lips I had particulars of it, i will endeavour, with your assistance, I to place the circumstances upon record. I cannot give the exact date: it was, I believe, very early in the thirties that Adrian Stephens (who was a Comishman) was engineer in charge of the blast engines at Dowlais. having been previously with the Messrs. Hill, at Plymouth Works. At that time one of the stemll boilers I there exploded. It was supposed to have been short of water, and Mr. Guest asked, "Can't you scheme something to give notice when the I water is getting low?" From the reply and subsequent remarks Mr. Guest had one of the pipes from the organ in Dowlais House ind sent it into the works to Stephens. The latter thought of a float, and as sound was caused by I a nartial opening in the circumference of the pipe, deduced that it would do so if the open- ing were all round, and as the construction was .easier in that form, he adopted it. It is only justice to Stephens to say, however, this was only a part of the scheme; his arrangement for the float, &c., has never been excelled. Amongst my papers I have a drawing of the arrangement made under his supervision. If of interest it would be sent you some day. The float itself was not Stephens s idea—he must have been aware of its use for the regulation of feed water previously; but the adaption for the purpose of a signal certainly belongs to him. Pray understand it was an automatic eontriva-nce, and that- for efficiency and sim- plicity it has never been excelled. Just about, the time Stephens was doing this, the Dowlais Company had a planing machine, a treadle drilling machine, and a screwing machine' from Messrs. Sharp. Roberts, and Co., then of Atlas Works, Manchester, and the men who were down to erect and start the machines, or Mr. Richard Roberts himself, took the idea back to Manchester, and. applying a cock to be opened by hand instead of the niitoinativ arrangement, the whistle, as it yet exists, was fully developed. Poor Adrian Stephens !—this was not the only thing he schemed-left Dow- lais and went to the Penydarren Works, and, subsequently, became reduced. That good man. the late Anthony Hill, very materially assisted him afterwards; but it is a painful matter, and I forbear to dilate upon it. It semietimes occurs to me. sir, what would railways do if the whistle had never been evolved. And there is that other matter, What is the difference between invention and adaption ? Others may decide as to these, but I have stated the facts as regards the steam whistle.
^ MUMBLES REGATTA
MUMBLES REGATTA Now Fixed to be Held at the End of August. A meeting of the amalgamated committees of the Mumbles Rowing and Skiff Clubs was held at the Ship and Castle Hotel. Mumbles, on Wednesday to ronsider what steps should be taken with the view of holding a regatta at the Mumbles this year. Mr. John Howell presided, and amongst those present were MtfHS, Fred C. T. Naylor (clerk Mumbles Lc al Board), Wm. Mason (captain Mumbles Rowing Club), Clifton Bennett (secretary Mumbles Skiff Club), Wm. Bennett, Sydney y Burgess, Cumming Evans, and eithers.—It. hav- ing been unanimously agreed to ljold a regatta. Messrs. W. Mason and C. Bennett- were elected e>e>eeoretarie6, Captain David Evans conductor of 'longshore sports, and Mr. Daviel Bernon sailing director.—Mr. Clifton Bennett said lie would like the press to take cognisance of the fact that the regatta was not being organi.*d in an antagonistic spirit to the Swansea event; and, further, that- the Mumbles Committee ,S willing to do anything in its power to assist the mayor of that town in his eiforts to make the larger event a, success. Tie also w>hf,d to give an emphatic denial to the a"le- gation that the skiff racing, which was a pro- tmr.f-nt feature of the regatta, was not -on- tested fairly, because of the fact that the com- peUtrrs a-iterwards divided the prizes between them. He ventured to say there was l1..t a rae., in Mia United Kingdom which was irore spiritedly contested.—Mr. Naylor heartily endorsed these sentiments.—A discussion then arose* as to the arranging of a. yacht race, and, c*- »'iti;ally. it was decided that the secretaries write to the Bristol Channel Yacht Club, ask- ing them what they were prepared to do in the matter.—Mr. W. Mason announced that Sir John Jones Jenkins had subscribed Jib towards the regatta, and that Mr. George Hemmen, superintendent of the Mumbles Rail- way, had promised a grand display of fire- works in barges lent by the Swansea Harlxjur Trust. The date of the event (August 30) hav- ing been decided upon, the que.stion of allowing cenfcrebexjrd crafts to ervmpete in the races was discussed at considerable length, a proposition being made to exedude such boats from entering. This, however, was negatived, and it w:vs agreed that the races be conducted in the ordi- nary -way.—A vote of thanks to the chairman te?iminated the proceedings.

COOLGARDIE GOLDFIELDS. A Reuter's telegram from Perth on Thursday aaya :—The Government has received official informa, tioll from the Warden of Coolgardie that a. wonderful discovery of gold has been made at a point situated some 40 miles north of that place. The reef outcrops for a. distance of half a mile. The warden says he has just seen at the offices of the local branch of the Union Bank of Australia about 4cwt. of specimens, which the manager estimates to be richer than the speci- mens from the Londonderry Mine. The warden estimates the weight of the gold as more than half the total weight. of the stone, so that there are about 2cwt. of gold in the specimens at the bank.

ANTI-GAMBLING CRUSADE.
ANTI-GAMBLING CRUSADE. Some Strictures by Mr. Justice Matthew. The 'Tall Mall Gazette" says:—Some words of plain <Hinmion-stn)-e were aeleirossed by Mr. Justice Mathew OIl Wedne.-day to Mr. Hawke and his Anti-Gambling League. He rejected, on ,-utiicient ieg.il grounds, what was 111 effect their appeal against the Northampton magis- trates' decision to dismiss the summons agairet the lessees of the raceoourse. It was not jtroved that the defendants had any knowledge of the betting that undoubtedly went on within iueir prem-ft*—that was the opinion of the magis- trates who heard the evidence, and it was not for a judge of the Queen'.s Bench to go behind it. He hinted, too. that the league were only ga-Ribling away their money themselves over these sporadic If they wanted to "put down gambling," they must go to work l»ld!y and thoroughly. They must a^k Par- holdly and thoroughly. They must af'k Par- liament to pa-ss a, general and comprehensive < Act which would put the law as to wagering on a logical and intelligible bsais. The Ant! Gamblers should make up their minds how far they are prepared to go. It is one thing to deplore a,l1d denouno? the vice; it is another thing to prohibit it by law and to punish those who practise? it. Nor is it fair to lay penalties on the bookmakers and to let the bettors go free. If a. wager is to be made illegal, then the hackers must be fined or sent to prison as well as the layers. Or if Mr. Hawke and his friends are not prepared to be what concessions will thev make to human weakness'! If they would abolish the bookmakers and bet- ting agents, would they establish the part nvutuel? The revenue derived from the French tax on this partie-ular form of ion has. it is t-tated to-day, brought in a sum of 10,000,000f. for the first- seven months of the year. The proceeds are devoted to charitable inrfitutions. and the philanthropists do not seem to find that "the money has an evil E avour.

It is alleged that Jacquess obtained large sums of money from an American syndicate to prosecute a claim to the Townley estates. The case has been adjourned from time to time in order to obtain witnesses from America, and these again not being present, J acquess was formally remanded.
SOPHIA GARDENS, CARDIFF.
SOPHIA GARDENS, CARDIFF. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING- EXPRESS" Sir.—May I through the columns of the "Western Mail" ('all the attention of those responsible to the present deplorable condition of the Sophia Gardens. Things have, seem- ingly, been neglected for a considerable time until now the gardens present anything bat- as lovely an appearance a." they might. Setting accommodation has almost disappeared; the fountain never plays, while instead the basin is filled with gravel and a few inches of dirty water; on either side of the main avenue, where, owing to the roughness of the path, people now constantly walk, the grass ha*? been altogether worn away, and larger and larger pools of water are accumulating; and nr 11 finally—for the present—the border of stones wnich once surrounded the "pond" lias gone, creating by its absence a source of danger to children, for whom, by the way, there is no protection whatever afforded. This sheet of water is, indeed, in a sad state, for not only bfs the water encroached several feet here nird there over the surrounding footpaUl, but it is at times covered with a thick ill-smelling slime. Now t.hat "Roath Park has provided su^h a maernificent lalce for the people of the other end of the town, it is.stirely. not too much to ask that what little this district has should lx> it easily inisj-ht—in a- pleasing con- dition. The Sophia Gardens should form oharmmg resort. Now. however, much sweet- ness is being wasted.—I am, frc.. Cardiff, Aug. 8. WEST END.

Buried Chests of Gold.
Buried Chests of Gold. I SEARCHES FOR PIRATES* HIDDEN TREASURE. rhe Story of a Big Find on the Nevt England Coast and a Woman's Greed. i The traditions of treasures buried by the pirates Kidd, Lafitte, and Blackbeard gave a romantic interest to the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Georgia. Thousand# of tata have searched for these buried chests of gold, but there is authentic record of one or two "finds," one on t.he New England coa-st and the other in Virginia. The latter case is said to have furnished Poe with the foundation of; Ills story of the "Gold Bug." The facts are: briefly these:—In the Atlantic Ocean, lying. tff the Virginia Coast, there are two or three:; heavily-wooded Miajids. One of these wad the resort- of Blackbeard. and was called by his name—Teach. A ueighljouring island belonged a century ago to a wealthy woman Oil the main- land. It was a wilderness which never had been inhabited, but by foxe." wild ducks, and other game. A trusty old slave, Ben, was placed by her in a cabin on the beach to bring her occasionally game and fish. One day,, while walking on the shore, Ben saw a yellow gleam in the sand. It came from a gold coin. He searched breathlessly along the beach and found a rusty iron box. one end of which had fallen out. Within was a heap of ooins, with, crosses and B-ilver crucifixes. The old man; went to his cabin and brought an empty salt- bag, which he tilled with the coins. He then. dragged a heap of brush over the chest to con* ceal it, set up a broken sapling to mark the place, and started for the mainland to give the treasure to his mistress. Tradition says that Mrs. Hetty was a hard, suspicious woman, and that when the trusty old negro gave her the- mass of coin her joy was equalled by her terror that he would rob her of the great treasure which he bad left behind. A heavy storm raged for five days. It was impossible for her to make the voyage to the island in an open boat, and she would not trust Ben. nor even her bi other or son, to go without her. At the end of a week the sea was calm enough for her to cross, but the sapling, the brush, and the chest had disappeared. An unbroken stretch of sa-nd covered the whole ooast. Ben could not- find the spot then nor never after. His mistress, it is said, kept him at the eearoli as long as lie lived, aiding hnn herself, but in vain. Some of the gunners who have visited the island have also searched for Mrs. Hetty's chest., but it never has been found. Nothing is certain but the fact tlia-t the bag of coins whs brought to her, and that. the touch of the gold and Ðea. suspicions and greed made her life wretched to the end. The poor fishermen of the ewasfc understand the moral of her story. When any of their number grows avaricious they say tha.t he has "rubbed his ita-nds against Mrs. iron chest." — -»■
CARDIFF MUSICAL SOCIETY.
CARDIFF MUSICAL SOCIETY. Stme Important Prespective Arrange- ments. From the prospectus of the Cardiff Musical Society for the season 1894-95 (which has just been issued) it is evident that the society is determined to sustain the high reputation it has already earned. Although the new policy inaugurated by the society in 1892, of pro- ducing the most interesting and modern works in the most elaborate manner, did not at. first meet with financial success, the society is full of hopefulness that perseverance in this direction will eventually be justified by the. requisite public support. The "MesaMth," which has now become an annual performance of the society, will be produced as usual os Boxing Day, December 26, but will no longer constitute one of the three subscription COIl- certs. It has also been arranged to develop the orchestral side of the society. At the first concert, the '"Elijah" (arranged for December 5), Mr. Norman Saltm nd, one of the leading English baritones, will appear as the Prophet. The second concert, on Feb- ruary 20, 1895, will be conspicuous by two exquisite short ohoral works and for the un- finished symphony of Schubert, which will: be performed for the first time in Cardiff. The committee have been signally successful in being able to induce the eminent composer, Mr. F. H. Cowen, to pay a visit at the. third concert, on April 25, 1895, to conduct the performance of his "Sleeping Beauty," while at the second concert the Danish viv linist-, Miss Frida- Scott a., one of t.he brilliant violinists of the present- day, "1 make her first appearance in Wales. It will be seen from the particulars given above that, the prospective arrangements of the society are worthy of the society and the town.
CAMBRIAN RAILWAY COMPANY.
CAMBRIAN RAILWAY COMPANY. The half-yearly meeting of the Cainbriaw Railways Company was held on Thurs- day at the Queen's Hotel, Man-, chester, Mr. Jan-ic-g Frederick Book-* ley presiding.—The Chai rman. in moving the adoption of the report, said he thought the statement for the half-year WM. on tkt, wlidle satisfactory. Although they had to nddition-al interest on capital through esurryimf out the Board of Trade requirements, there was, fortunately, sufficient vitality in the line tc enable them to do so. In fact, there ww every indication that the prospects of the oom-1 pany were better than they had ever been.. A point he should like to mention was thsfc they had been assured by the dealers in Welsh* mutton that the arrangement which they ImkI been able to make with the other companies for the conveyance of Welsh mutton. as well as other fresh meat, with a minimum of l^lb j. by passenger train, at half the ordinary psros| rates, would have a trrea-t effect in developing this traffic in the Principality, and, omft nuen+ly, be of ronsideTable assistance to Welsh farmers in this period of exceptional agricultural depression. They were told twl one dealer at Llanidloes that the reduced- rates would have the effect of increasing his, trade five-fold. The new arrangement wouht come into force from the. 1st of September! next, and would apply lietween all statirmsi throughout England, Ireland, and WalesJ (Applause.)—The report was adopted, 8l1c1 votes of thanks terminated the proceedings^
