BARON PROFUMO.
BARON PROFUMO. "Truth" Shows How the Provident Agents are Appointed. The current number of "Truth'' contains the following paragraph, which will be read with interest :—• The main-stav of Baron Profumo's precious Provident Association of London i-, of course, the army of agents who have to beat up new bondholders to join the concern. I have already explained that tliaee agents are under the supervision of, say, about a dozen assistant superintendents in each district, who. again, are under the control of the chief of the local staff, the divisional or district insj^ector. All the,:e officials take over-riding conmiiss'ons on the work of the agents. It would appear, how- ever, as if recent exposures had played havoc with the agents of the concern, and it is within my knowledge that a good many agents, dis- gusted at the non-fulfilment of the promises held out by the company in its pros]>eetuses and circulars, lia-ve resigned their positions. Hence the necessity for securing new agents, espe- cially as bondholders continue to secede from the association, getting, as in Bristol, the bulk of their money back by taking concerted legal action for the return of their subscriptions. Matters must, in fact. look very serious, to judge by the methwls employed by Baron Pro- fumo for the purpose of attracting new agents. In recent issues of the 'Standard' (in fnct. almost daily) are to be found the following advertisements, all of which emanate from the Provident Association of London: — 'A beneficial Employment can be Secured at once by anyone residing in any. paTt of the United Kingdom easy employment; nothing to buy or sell.—Avply. bv iet-ter, in first instance, to N 1'. R., 37, "Walbrook, lii.C' -k Wealthy Company, doing an enormous and rapidly increasing busings, requires reliable representatives m all the important towns nf Great Britain suitable men will be promoted to impn-tant by letter only to H. A. Roo 57. Walbrook, E.CV 'ConstantEmployment.—Actuation, is open to persons with good references and of fair ability progressive appointments will be made in all towns of the rnitro Kinedoin.— Address W. E. G., 37, Walbrook, E.C." Readers of 'Truth' who replied to these adver- tisements have invariably received a letter from the Provident Association of London, enclos- ing copies of the prospectus and extracts from the agency proposal form, as well as a memo- randum with name and address of the. superin- tendent for the district, with whom the appli- oa.nt is asked to communicate. It must be admitted that this is an ingenious, if unworthy, method of touting for agents.

Captain Owens, vice-chairman, and delegates from all the cycling clubs of the towin were present. His worship the mayor has signified his inten- tion to be present at the Sophia Gardens Park at five o'clock, before the start of the proees- sian. THE CZAR'S HEALTH.
1 THE CZAR'S HEALTH. Alarming Rumours as to His Condition. Recent information from St. Petersburg repre- sents the state of the Czar to be extremely serious. A rumour is current that he is suffer- ing from cerebral tuberculosis. The stay of the Imperial patient at the Castle of Bralo- wiez was, it is said, advised by Professor Sachargin on account of the quietmie -of-tee place, and of the curative influence exercised by the pine forests whi-ch surround the castle. It is declared that the Czar must shun every description of brain work, must walk much and ride on horseback. Prayers are being offered in all the Russian churches for the Czar's health.

ICurious Epitaphs.
I Curious Epitaphs. FOUND ON GRAVESTONES 1M, AMERICA. Some are Quaint and Funny, Others are Absolutely Irreverent-and Sarcastic. Although our oousins or brothers, as you will, on the other side of the htanng pond have supplied us with a variety of more or less useful articles—including the new school of I journalism and wives- for our aristocrats and parveuus—it has not yet, so far as we are aware, inflicted upon u" its ciiuwiiyaid humour.. Quaint monumental lines in praise or dispraiae of the dead are to be found in many odd God s Acres of the United Kingdom, but they gene- rally have some redeeming quality in a peculiar phrase or graceful expression; but we venture to think that nothing as crude or bald as the following- could be found in any other country but that presided over by the high roaring- eagle — "Here lies John Meadow. Passed away like a shadow. B. -H Ils name wa- FieJid, but it would not rhyme." In the capital of the I'r.itfd States is to be found the following very great on metaphor inscription — "Our little Jacob Hns heen taken away from this earthly g-arMa To bloom in a superior newer-pot above. We wonder what Washington would have thought of that effort at composition. N.B. seems to be somewhat of a strong point with our American friends, for it occurs in the epitaph below. which was composed for a young- woman who. when in This mundane sphere, earned her livelihood by selling eggs, the memorial liemp erected by her brother. It runs thus :■— "Here lies the body of Betsy Binn, Witowassoveryrurtw-ithiu. She broke the outward shell of sin, And hatched herself a. cherubim. —Her brother, made of sterner stuff, Adds to her business that of snuff. A verv pret-tv combination—that of egg? and snuff. The next specimen gives the local wit an opportunity, of which he makes more or less satisfactory use. Many are the samples of ounning epitaphs to be found in American graveyards, but the following is .*> good as any — "Owen Moore is gone away, O,Ùn' more than lie could pa.y. In the annexed specimen rhyme was evi- dently the one thing aimed at, regardless- of rhythm, measure, avid such like necessities of the poetic muse — "Beware how you ap-proaoh. man. Here lies the body of John, the coachman." From which we must infer that John was a. fearful personage whan in the fle""h. In the following we are t^eateri. to a little bit of i j>os^i-blv have been^ ful- filled ere this — ".TQIUI Palfreman lies buried here, Aged four ;;nd twenty year: Near this -place his mother lies. Like-wise his father when he dies-" The schoolmaster is at times evidently very much abroad when the necessity for composing an epita.ph arises, and must have beeu so on this occasion r'Him shall never come to wet But we shall surely go to he." which evinces faith. if naught else. The married state often affords much amusement to f 'L wayfarers in graveyards, and husbands Dnd wives both show their sarcastic satisfaction at Death having carried off their helpmates. The-. following are good specimens of epigrammatio epitaphs of this description — "Here lies my wife, a sad slattern and shrew., If I said I regretted her I should lie too. 1 And another runs— ''Here lies my wife, here let her lie She is at rest and so am I." A wife had this inscribed on her tombstone: ¡ "Oh. do not weep, my husband dear; I am not dead, but sleeping here; Then mend your ways, prepare to die.. For you are soon to come to I. Thus evincing her disregard of the laws of grammar. Beneath this inscription her husband pencilled these lines — "I do not weep. my dearest life, For I have got another wife: Therefore I cannot come to that, For I must go to cherish she-" The following is certainly as good as any-t- "A lady named Bridget M'Guire, Endeavoured to kindle a fire; Tin wood it was green. When this old world has had its earthly tlinft, You11 find the spirit, if you're there, of him, To whom this stone i- raised—we call him Whisky Jim. He died in 1853."
