! CARDIFF 1895 FESTIVAL.
CARDIFF 1895 FESTIVAL. Speech by Sir Joseph Barnby to the Executive Committee. A meeting of the executive committee of the Triennial Musical Festival fixed to take place in Cardiff in 1895 was held on Tuesday night at the Park Hotel. Cardiff. The Rev. Canon Downing occupied the chair, and Sir Joseph Barnby, conductor for tha 1895 festival, at- tended. Tha most important paint under con- sideration was the election of chorus masters s 1 -0 for the festival, and it was decided to appoint Mr. T. F. Avlward and Mr. W. Scott to share the duties of the position. Mr. J. E. Deacon was appointed as accompanist. The musical committee received full powers to admit can- didates into the chorus after receiving the re- port of Sir Joseph Barnby. The musical com- mittee recommended that the final considera- tion of programme be deferred, and that in the meantime the "Messiah," "Elijah," Berlioz's "Faust," and Beethoven's "Choral Symphony" be selected to go on with. A letter was read from M. Dvorack, who, in reply to the request to write a, work for the Cardiff Festival, baid all arrangement might possibly be come to. and it was resolved to communicate with IMe,- srB. Novello to arrange for the publishing of the work. Further letters were also read from Professor Stanford with regard to The new work from his pen. Subsequently slipper was laid in the Park Hotel, those present being the Rev. Canon Downing" (presidingl, Sir Joseph Barnby, Mr. G. G. Beale (organist of Llandaff Cathedral), Professor Tanner, Messrs. J. W. Morris. E. Barry, W. B. C. Treasure, W. n, S. Johnston, R Hooper, Edwin Seward, J. Radley, D. W. Evans, F. J. Smith. T. Evans. Walter Cook, B. Newman, E. W. AS ;ute, and W. Scott (hon. secretary). The Chairman, in proposing the "Cardlff Musical Festival of 1895," said its success would depend, in the first piaee, upon the conductor. (Hear, hear.) Sir Joseph Barnby was not un- tried. He was, to a certain extent, in 1892, but they now felt he was one of their best frs■ ticls- (Hear, hear.) They would do any- thing to show him kindness, and could relv in return upon his sympathy and aff",dion.( Hear, hear.) They had a conductor the ladies ]on d — (laughter)—and for whom they all had the hig'hest respect and esteem. The next point in the success of the festival (which was absolutely assured) was that they had two exceedingly estimable secretaries, but there was a cloud on the horizon—their friend Mr- W. H. Johnston was leaving Cardiff for London. Mr. Johnstou eulogisticallv proposed the health of Sir Joseph Barnby. and. referring to his approaching departure from Cardiff, pre- dicted a great triumph for the 1895 festival. Sir Joseph Barnby, in reply, said Cardiff gained his heart at the outset, but even if his reception had lwpu less cordial he, was bound to do that which he bad done all his life, viz., when his hand found anything to do, to do it with .,]1 his might.(Applaud.)The choir, at their first festival, as they were aware, was selected hdore he came. He found, in the ifrst instance, it wa" not quite as good as he could w ish, but h3 determined to improve it so far as lie per- sonally could, and now he felt absolutely certain that the second festival must be a tenfold greater success than the first- (Applause.) Their festi- val in some respects was unique- The Birming- ham Festival, and to an extent the three cathe- dral choir festivals, were always a great success, because 90 or 100 singers were drawn from Leeds. The Leeds choir was recruited, not from that town alone, but from places round about, and Yorkshire (perhaps, excepting Wa-les) provided the finest choir singing in the world. For the coming festival they were satisfied with people actually in Cardiff, a.nd how careful tliev ought to be to select only the very best. He was penetrated with of his great responsibility, and they must do everything to make the next festival, not only three years better than the last; but thirteen years liet-ter- If music wa.s to iiroceed and develop at the same rate a.s Cardiff itself, they must be up.and doing. They must work carfc- fullv and slowly, and not be satisfied with amy arrangement until it was thoroughly thresne/1 out. His reputation (sneh as it was) and his interests were so bound up in the festival that he would not allow any pressure of time or any little difficulties to stand in the way. Other toasts followed.
TALE OF TWO HORSES.
TALE OF TWO HORSES. A Local Gentleman's Valuable Animal Sold in Mistake. One of the good stories told in Cardiff just now is about a horse, or, rather, two horses. A gentleman instructed his to dispose lof one of his hor-es for anything he could get for the animal above £12.. The man was told on what- particular field it was to be found, the animal being out at gra^s. Having1 found the held and the horse, he marched it off direct to the fair, and in no time received an offer of £ 17. which was promptly accepted. Delighted with the sum so readily obtained, he returned to the owner, who seemed equally pleased. Later in the day the gentleman to whom the field lie-longed wended his way thither in quest of a, hor-e of his own. which xx-ac, not to be seen. ,t ioT He, however, discovered his friend's animal lying in a secluded corner of the field. "Great snakes! he ejaculated, "that man of -6, must have taken my horse and Rold it by mis- take. And so lit? had. It is not to be wondered at that there was such a ready buyer at J617. seeing that the animal was worth £ 60. Detectives, it is said, have discovered the wherealxnits of the animal and developments are awaited.

WELSHMAN DIES IN SCOTLAND. General regret was felt at Dumfries on Satur- day when it became known that Mr. John Jones, who for nearly 30 years was chief-con- stable of the county, had died that forenoon. The deceased gentleman was in the eighty- second year of his age. Besides being chief- constable, he was also for many years procu- '•rator-fiscal to the justices. He was greatly liked by the men of the force, and in private life his genial, kindly nature, which a certain dignity of manner would sometimes cenceal in the execution of his public functions, endeared him to many frieodB. He was a native of Walea.
CLAIM FOR £4,000 DAMAGES.
CLAIM FOR £4,000 DAMAGES. Swansea Shipowners' Action Against an Irish Owner. On Tuesday judgment was given at Edin- ¡ burgh by Lord Low in a suit instituted in the Supreme Court of Scotland by 3Ir. George Leunard. shipbroker, Swansea, and others, the registered owners of the screw steamer Scoresby, of Whitbv, agaiust Mr. John Murphy, mer- chant. Waterford, registered owner of the screw steamer Christina, of Waterford. The object o* the suit was to recover £ 4,000 in respect of damages to the Scores by, caused by the Chris- tina breaking loose from her moorings in Ayr Harbour on the 12th of February last and striking heavily against the former vessel.—It was maintained in support of the claim that the collision was caused entirely through the fault of those in charge of the Christina in failing to have her properly and sutfieiently moored to the quay. To this it was replied that the gale of February 12 was of exceptional and almost unprecedented violence- The Chris- tina held by her bow moorings until about three o'clock in the morning, and then the cup came off the top of the haul on the quay, and, in consequence of that, the Christina. broke adrift.—The Judge was of opinion that the Christina was sufficiently and properly moored to the quay, and t-liat the breaking away of the vessel was not due to negligence or want of skill, but was an accident caused by the gala His lordship accordingly gave his decision for the defendants, and found them entitled to costs.

Lieutenant Froude, R.N.R. of the Ship- ni-.i-sttrs' Society, London, writing to the "Times" on the subject of undermaruimg, en- closes a letter from a second mate in which that officer fays :Fur the last twelve months I was second mate of an old-fashioned steamer, carrying 2.000 tons of dead-weight cargo. She is 24 years old; deck hands, cap- tain. two mates, avid five sailors: one acted as knap-trimmer, and generally slept in a.]i night. There was an apprentice boy also, but he was considered extra. At sea two men and an officer in eaoh watoh, and the look-out kept by th.3 A.B. was not to be depended en ],:1 bad v. father he had to be at the wheel extra and there wa* no look-out kept, except by the officer, and sometimes he had to take the wheel, too. or leave the bridge to attend to the sails or sidelights. In the daytime he 'was ex- pected to carry on "the work, and the t-hip had to take care of herself—in fact, we all had to work, cleaning, painting, carpentering, bail- making we had to do all that was lieoe^a-ry to make the ship look creditable to the employ, if we. valued our berths. We traded frcm Car- diff ty Spsrufrh ports, and generally loaded ore for home or Continent. She wa" a weekly boat the discipline nil; a regular Tom, Dick. and Jerry turn-out. Going ir. and out of po'-t I seldom had any other help than wiiat the apprentice could g-ivé. The warping Utleo-, were bin." and the winch about 80ft. from the quarter pipes. Consequently 1. who "should have bear, at my post, had to. drive the winch. or else hold on; two men at the wheel, and other three with the mate forward, as she was fio awkward to work there." In his own com- !1lunie3.t,iC<IlS Lieutenant "Froude manning committee, now u.der adjournment, is to meet shortly at Cardiff, as that part is the leputed headquarters of 'strictest «<o- noruy' in r**]xvt of crews. I would respect- fully suggest to the committee that its powers should be used to obtain evidence from office's and me/11 in active service of the many iarge and me/11 in active service of the many iarge fleets of steamers trading there, a-s by such me,-v. the exact state of matters now curnrit may be appertained, and the ship managers have ec opportunities for clearing themselves from The imputation* resting on them. Vessels navi- gated in the manner described are a constavt source of danger to themselves -and to others."

LEIGH.CLUB AND PROFESSIONALISM MIGRATION OF WELSH PLAYERS. On Tuesday night the Lancashire County Committee proceeded with the further hearing- of the charge of professionalism against the Leigh Club. At the first meeting it was alleged by Mr. Battersby, who makes the charges that several of the Leigh players were paid a weekly wage and that duplicate books of accounts were kept. Further peculiar evidence was given on Tuesday night, and amongst other statements was one to the effect that money was owing- to Mr. Battersby for boarding Wilding and Fitzgerald when they first arrived from Wales. Wilding distinctly denied that he went to Leigh at the instigation of the officials of that club, and also stated he had never received a penny for his services. It was late when the evidence was concluded, and, after consulting some time in private, the committee decided to draw up a report upon the whole proceedings and give their decision next Wednesday. -4-

!New Sensation for Paris
New Sensation for Paris IT IS VERY FRHrCHY AND QUITE UP TO DATE. A i: Mirage Song" in which a Yeung L Lady in Snort Skirts is Seeo Dancing on Her Head. The cafe chanta-nt of Paris is always pre- pared to take advantage of any uovelty, whether it be in ,a.ture or 3rt. t.llail: will snr- prise or mystify its. patrons. That the g-e.uiu< of a variety singer should rise to the height of dragging' down the heavens to aid her in her short skirt display or force the sun into partnership with her in her art would probably never have occurred to auy artiste outside the French capital. But in a city where, one woman advertises her thinness as a drawing card. and another acquires glory because of her awkwardness. any eeceratcicity is regarded ag fin de siecle. and sure to bring profit to its originator. The versatile performers of Paris are more pro- lific in the tricks of their profe&sion than, any others the world over. The latest sensation in Paris this summe? I THE KIR A SI SONG. Th" method employed to produce the- illu- sion is a very simple one, and consists in can- centrating upon the artiste, a powerful light, which throws a portion of her figure upon a. sheet of glass suspended above her, its e.dgies^ being concealed. The reflection is. of course. iaiverted above ht" head. and she seems to be; floating in the air. fuery move ffiiat tAe makes is reflected in t.he figure above her. NATIO/'j\L EISTEDDFOD. A Misleading Statement as to tin Llanelly Meeting Contradicted. Mr. Frank Randell, Llanelly, hon. secretary of the 1895 National Eisteddfod, which is tohc held at Llanelly, writes that he will be greatly obliged to have contradicted the reports eirca- lated in the newspapers last week that next year's eisteddfod is to be held in May. This is an error calculated to very seriously injure tlw success of the gathering, as the committee have, decided to hold the eisteddfod four days pro- ba-bly in the last week of July.
