ARCTIC EXPLORATION.
ARCTIC EXPLORATION. Narrative of Thrilling Experiences of the Wellman Expedition. A Renior s New York telegram on Wednes- day says A dispatch recounting all interview with Captain Buttolfsen, who commanded the Kagnvald Jarl. the vessel which conveyed the Wellraan Arctic expedttion to Spitsbergen, has been cabled here. The explorers underwent great hardships and many perilous adventures. Captain Bottolfsen says the expedition reached Walden Island on May 17, when the paek ice was already becoming troublesome. On the 24th Mr. Wellman and his party started north- wards, and four days later the-screwing of the- ice commenced in earnest, the icebergs towering on every side of the vessel yardarm high. On the same day, while the crew were drinking .heir afteijivon ioe oiKnieuiy closed in, and the Ragnvald Jarl was crushed like a matchbox. The water rushed in with terrific fcree, and all fled ashore. The entire catas- trophe occupied but four or five minutes. Pro- visions and boats had, however, been already taken ashore, and, as the vessel fortunately did not sink, but hung on the edge of the ice, it was possible to savy a considerable quantity of stores, especially of coal, which w as obtained by breaking a hole in the side of the ship- Until a proper hut could be constructed out of the wreckage, however, the crew were compelled to shelter in a large dog kennel. An express party was at once despatched to convey news of the disaster to Mr. Welli)-ian, who was over- taken at Marten Island. Mr. Wellman him- self, with Mr. Dodge and two others returned to \Valden Island, and a council was held, at which Captain Bottolfsen, Herr Wastfeldt, and a sailor declared, themselves willing to attempt the perilous southward journey, and repoit the fate of the ship. The heavy pack ice prevented their immediate departure, how- ever, so that when Saridbo, the mate, Joersen, Winship, and Heyerdalil returned, on June 23, owing to lack of provisions and troubles from ice water with orders and mails from Mr- Wellman, who had again gone northward, tl.e party were still at Walden Island. The,' were not able to leave until June 27, wI: Bottolfsen, Wastfeldt, Winship, Heyerdalil, and Houde finally set out, taking with thc.t a small twelve-foot aluminum boat. i'or four weeks in snow and storm across the treache- rous pack ice the party struggled on, some- times hauling their boat over the ice and sometimes sailing or rowing. In this manner they covered 230 miles south, along Spits- bergen. Nearly all their clothes and much of their ether equipment had to be thrown away to lighten the boat, which was over- loaded. The passage rterosd Honlopen Strait was particularly difficult and dange- rous. The boat lay but a few inches above the water. Midway across the strait open water was encountered, and during the boat's journey a terrific storm from the south-west struck them. rendering their position highly perilous. Everyone was wet to the skin, and the cold wa>s intense. How the gallant party ultimateh- reached their destination has already been published. The explorers luckily shot a few Polar bears and reindeer. The alumi- num boats were of the greatest service to the expedition, but the dogs had to be shot, as they got sore feet. The party of six left on Walden Island will, it is thought-, be rescued by one of the sealers, as the ice and *-eather conditions have changed so much foi the better that they could now proceed east- ward.
A MINIATURE NIAGARA.
A MINIATURE NIAGARA. It Ruined a Cardiff Man's Holiday Attire. "Soaking," writing on Monday night, sap: -With your usual courtesy to me, I beg to ventilate a great grievance. I have no wish to do anyone an injury, much less those that are in authority over its. Still, I sincerely wish that every member of the Cardiff Corporation had the same experiences that I had this morn- ing, As I was passing down, to my business, haying- first of all dressed myself in my holiday attire, white hat and all, I had, unfortunately, to p vss under the Great Western Railway bridge over the Penarth-road, when, as I thought, I could reasonably give my umbrella a shake I down. Two ladies, however, happened to pass at the time, and I gallantly stepped from the pavement to allow them to pass undisturbed, w hen, lo! down came a torrent, in my estima- tion something like the Niagara, Fnlls at the Horseshoe, on my unsuspecting head. and my nice white hat became the colour and quality of a two months' dishcloth. I, therefore, had to take a hansom home at once and get my erst- while clean clothes changed for dry ones. Now, dear Mr. Editor, could you not do something to remedy this sort of thing1?"

A FAMOUS SOPRANO.I
A FAMOUS SOPRANO. I ? Miss Jessie Bradford has Sung in South I Wales. Although still in statu pupillari (says the I "Sketch") Miss Jessie Bradford, the young soprano who made such a favourable im- pression as "Michaela" in the recent perfor- nnnc-e of "Carmen" at Drurv Lane by the Guildhall School of Music students, has already had a fair amount of experience on the operatic stage. Coming up to London from Stroud. in Gloucestershire, about three years ani a half ago, Miss Bradford put her- self under the tuition of Mr. Richard Latter at the Guildhall School of Music. Here she soon made her mark, and" won in succession the silver and gold medals for solo singing, besides numerous priices. Commencing her operatic career in the Guildhall chorus, Mi-fS Bradford M'a.s. not long after, entrusted with the role of "Zerlina" in ''Fra Diavolo." This I MISS JESSIE BRADFORD (From a photo by Russell, Baker-street, London, W.). was by no means a light task for a novice, but" she achieved a great success when Auber's charming opera -was performed by the Guild- hail students at the Lyrio Theatre. This performance brought Miss Bradford under the notice of the late Haydn Parry, who engaged her as understudy to Madame Amy Sherwin in the principal soprano part in his opera, "Cigarette," which, after a very suc- cessful tour in Wales, ran for several months in London at the Shaftesbury and Lyric Theatres. Both in Wales and in London Miss Bradford was frequently called U]xm to play the part of "Violette," and on one of these occasions, at Swansea, Madame Patti, who was in the audience, complimented her highly on her artistic singing. Since that time Miss Bradford lias played in "Miami," the musical version of "Green Bushes," which was produced at the Princess's Theatre last year, and in Auscal Tate and Neill Donovan's comio opera. "His Highness, produced at a matinee at the Opera Comique. She has also been on tour with Parry Cole's opera. "Leila." But while working hard both on the stage and on the concert platform Miss Bradford has been studying assiduously at the school on the Embankment. lritterly undinr Mr. Hermann Klein, and her excellent performance of "Michaela" shows how greatly she has profited by her steady and systematic work.

I' CASTE" AT THE GRAND.
I' CASTE" AT THE GRAND. Mr. T. W. Robertson's famous comedy of "Caste" was produced with considerable success at the Grand Theatre, Cardiff, on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendant*. The company sustained their parts in a most satis- factory manner, Miss Mary Austin appearing to great advantage as "Esther Eccles," and Mr. John Carter presenting a realistic portraiture of the character of "Eccles," the good-natured, drunken father (as played by him under the direction of the author. "Caste" will be repeated this (Thursday) evening, and on Fri- day evening Miss Mary Austin will take a benefit, when there will be a grand revival of Mrs. Lovell's poetic play, "Ingomar."

TIED PUBLIC-HOUSES. The Terms of Settlement of the Rhondda Action. In our report yesterday of the case Rhondda Valley Brewery Company (Limited) v. Wil- liams it was stated that application to both parties failed to elicit the terms of settlement, but that we learned that the brewery company, during the remainder of the term. of lease, had agreed to supply at the same price at which they supply free houses, and that they abandoned their claim for ejectment and also their claim for damages. Plaintiffs also agreed to pay defendant £500. We are now informed on good authority that the terms of compromise published are not correct, but that the whole basis of the settlement was the securing to the company the seven years' fcadto or the iio« £ i JR>t"pWvicwSf!J- Vested ill them, for which they paid X500 and made an allow ance of 2s. a, barrel, each party paying its own costs.
WELSH LIBEL CASE.
WELSH LIBEL CASE. The Quarrel Between Congregational Ministers. Ar Liverpool Assizes on Wednesday, at the close of the day's sitting, the actions which have been entered for hearing of Williams v. Morris William- v. Roberts and Williams, v. Smith, which are brought by a South Wales Congregational minister to recover damages for alleged libel and slander, were mentioned.—Mr. Justice Bruce asked if they were likely to be tried. Mr. Muiliolland said he was one of the coun- sel in the cases, and he was afraid there was no chance of a settlement. Mr. Justice Bruce said lie noticed the matter in dispute was an ecclesiastical one affecting the interests of a denomination. Was there no tri- bunal that could decide with reference to matters affecting the character of a minister, for this was really what it came to in the pre- sent cases, so far as he could gather. Mr. Muiliolland My clients have, gone away for the day, but I would like your lordship to repeat those remarks when they are here. Mr. Justice Bruce said lie thought a settle- ment was obviously desirable in the interests of the denomination. If the denomination could not decide, then they might, come to the. court to decide for them. He had entertained the hope, however, that a religious body would have been able in some way to determine a question of that sort. Mr. Mulholland said he was much obliged to his lordship, and would represent to his clients what had been said.

Plays and the Players...
wnwi—awa—■<—exmamtawww— Plays and the Players. GOSSIP AND CHATTER OF THE FOOTLIGHTS. The Re-decoration of the Royal and the Sensational Drama Staged There, If tha.t which acts as a brain pan for maf serves me aright I explained a few weeks back that I was going on tour. Mistake me not. 1. mean touring in its best sense. I have been holidaying, touring, lazyinjf, which you will, for in my own case they are synonymous terms, and mean but one thing--rnre and unadulterated idle- I ness. I' faith, but if the truth were told I am afraid I sftonld prove to be the laziest piece of ani- mated lumber that ever stalked this huma.n timberyard of ours. Idanettake my leisure by rush- ing post haste over the face of the globe. Rather am I content to lie at mine ease, watching the life that ebbs and flows in some seaside resort, or i with a mog of beer before me and a. pipe in i-n4 mouth, watch contentedly the peculiarities of those that participate in the pleasures (A our village alehouse. It is so easy to loll idly and think and watch all the ungenteel folk that are so unlike the beings that move and have their existence in the more exhalted spheres of life. These latter are- so painfully alike there is but one type of them, all moving and living within the narrow un- written lines laid down for their guidance. With, the classes it i< so different—there are a thousand i specimens of them. Each possesses a little iu. dividnality, a distinct characteristic that, lika: the passing show, attracts, even if it is but tem- porarily. The world is so much wider to them. They are not confined within these rigid lines of a somewhat meaningless respectability. They follow their bent, and their nature becomes the broader and more generous for it. Of a truth, but the study of the ways of these uugenteel folk hath a singular attraction for me. But all this by the way. I am straying from the subject in hand. I pray you remember I have been holidaying, and, mindful of this, cannot for the nonce nar- row my thoughts down to the glare of the foot- lights and the glitter of the tawdry tinsel. I am still dreaming of the murmur of the ocean, and cannot reconcile myself to the coal-dust and: mud of our begrimed metropolis. Pouf! how it stmketli! Mayhap, however, I had better on- to the happenings. Things in general are flatter than pop, and, if we except the facta that the Royal has under- gone a complete transformation and that the; Grand has changed hands, we might as well sit out at the back and stare at the tater patch" as try to find anything particularly new and startling. But sill this by the way, as the. traveller said of the milestone. Things may be; going slow, and we may feel like taking a. rest, but the foreman is inexorable, and this spacer has got to be filled. So no more of this. Go ye* all and be cheerful and sustain yourselves with great gladness, for doth not Chris touts with it*, bills and pantomimes and dyspasia s^nproacb; and t«i€se mooda, whioh <u-e h»t mhsC' be & missed. For a season cometh quickly When the leaves fall sadly thickly, And the laughing time, the chafliing time, is o'e% Selah I Let us discourse. I speak above of the Royal, which, in its new dress, looks exceedingly smart and clioerfiil Everything has been transformed. The deco. rations are bright and cheery, such. indeed; as make one inclined to rejoice with a loud fal-lal. There is something bright and cosy" and cheerful about it, and a man who could. not enjoy the fare from the comfortable seats now provided must, indeed, be without any soul. There is a play there, of course, this week, '"The Span of Life," a soul bestirring, highly sensational drama, fnil of thrillijf situations and effects, and, perforce, fHfe audiences assembled nightly are great and good to see. I would have explained it more fully to you and given you the fax, for which YØII no doubt hunger, if it had not been that in ex- ploring the fastnesses of the "bar" I missed aIt act or two, and, holding that in prying inta the secrets of greatness, yclept the drammer, it doesn't do to omit any, I am, perforce, compelled to confine myself to the statement that it is a goodly piece, and suggest that you, had better see it and judge for yourselves. ¡ It is a. long time since the comedy of "Caste" was put before the Cardiff public—eight or ten rears ago, at the least, I should think—and then we saw it at the Royal. Longer still, however, is it since, in the heyday of mYí youth, I saw Mr. Robertson's comedy so ad- mira.bly rendered by the Bancrofts at the Hay- market. Different was the "house" on that occasion to that which was present at the Grand on Tuesday night; and yet. I cannot- understand why sltoh a powerful comedy, even in this frivolous age, should fail to chaw big houses. True.. the times have changed. Whereas we at one time read Dickens and; Lyttoii, we are now content with the dirty realistic literature erf Zola and such lik# writers. With literature, so with the stages We like our food tasty, and are not wont t4 exercise a too rigid purism so long as it it light and airy, and gives us food for amuse ment rather than thought. Perhaps, with recollections of the Bancrofts in my mind, I was disappointed with Wednes- day's performance. It did not strike me t-hafe the company were eminently adapted for the parts. "Passion's Power" is the piece de fe-< sistanee of the programe, and I rather they were selected more with an eye to theirj suitability in this drama than to their repre- sentation of lighter comedy. Presence of mind is always an invaluable accessory to the stock-in-trade of an actor ori actress. "Polly Eccles" is to be complimented: on her possession of it. On Wednesday night, the scene seemed in a fair wav to come down; on top of those on the sbg-ee.J'tæ, audience, m is always the case in such affairs, were getting ready to laugh. "Polly's" presence of mÎlJd) averted the contretemps. "Well! u]x>n my word! An earthquake!' she chimed in, with- out a, moment's hesitation. And the houSlt fairly rose at her. After that. if the scene, had fallen on top of her, I should have e*- pected her to come to the footlights and saidj "Ii "-rtntlemen. I have at last reached the height of my ambition. I have brought the house down." The Empire programme is an attractive one this week, and the business done has, of ONE OF THE CASTLES. conrse been roaring. Morritt. with his new illusion The Miss- ing Man," makes a very big hit, and loses Scott, of Ardla- raont mystery fame, in a apace of time that weuld make the smartest of the "yard" men blink with no uncertain blink. The sketch by the three Castles is, rather a new depar- tare in musio-ball business, and meets with the appreciation' it undoubtedly de- serves. "A Panto- mime in Ten Minutes" fby R. H. Douglas) is screamingly funny whilst a number of other good turns help to fill up a rattling good pre- gramme. Of course, the Rev. Oswald always gets together a strong crowd, for is not wisdo. bis crowning glory? Indeed, there are some who aver that the same crown rests on the: massive brow of THE PROMPTER.
