LLOYD-GEORGE SPEAKS.
LLOYD-GEORGE SPEAKS. Justifies the Welsh Revolt and Makes a Grave Charge. Speaking- at Bang-or on Thursday night Mr. Lloyd-George, M.P., dealt principally with the revolt of the Welsh members, and once again vindicated their action. But in the course of his speech, referring to Sir G. O. Morgan's interview with Sir William Harcoart, Mr. Lloyd George said they bad repeatedly asked that what had transpired at that interview should be made public. It was right that Wales should know. It was not a. private interview. Sir George Osborne Morgan waited upon Sir William Harcourt as the Welsh Nationalist leader, and not as a friend, and Sir William Kareourt's reply ought to be in the possession of the Welsh people, especially as it was one of the most important facts in the chain of circumstances which led them to the conclusion that strong action was essential if Wales was to get the attention she deserved at the bands of the Liberal Ministry. This much lie would say- that the answer given to their leader was so grossly insulting in its character tha.t no self- respecting nation could possibly tolerate it with- out protest.

Mr. Brandling (the father of the late Mr. Brandling-, step-father to Lord Jersey) and his partners gave a grand subterranean ball. The ball-room was situated at a depth of nearly 1,100ft. The co pip any began to descend in appropriate dresses about half-past nine in the morning, and continued to arrive till one in the afternoon. The men engaged in the work, their wives and daughters and sweethearts, .several neighbours, the proprietors and agents. and sundry friends of both sexes who had courage to avail themselves of the privilege, all found their way to the bottom of the shaft. Immediately on their arrival there they pro- ceeded to the extremity of the drift, to the l'aee of the coal, where eallh person litwed a piece as a memento of the visit, and then returned to the hall-room. Dancing was continued till three o clock ÚI the afternoon. No distinc- tion was made, and ladies joined in the general dance with pitmen's daughters.

HIGH EXPLOSIVES IN MINES. The London "Daily News" says:—In view of the terrible loss of ;fe at the Albion Col- liery, South Wales, and the evidence which was given at the subsequent coroner's inquiry, it is suggestive to find that the men at a neighbouring colliery (in the Aberdare Valley) have accepted a month s notice to end con- •tFaets rather than give precedence to high 0 plosives over gunpowder- Experts .now generally ad nit that in blasting the flameless explosives have special value, but those most concerned anpeai' to be least sensitive to the

The candidates were Mr. W. Wilkins and Mr. W. 13. Jones. The re- sult was declared soon after nine o'clock, amid some excitement, to be in favour of Mr. Wilkins by a majority of 50. The appointment- is an excellent one. Mr. Wilkins is a warm-hearted Welshman, with a store of energy and enthu- siasm that will do much to make next year's National Eisteddfod a success. Mr. Wilkins is one of the most popular men in the town, and ,;s known and respected from one end of South Wales to the other. He is a large figure in the football world, and although this may be his first- venture among eisteddfodwyr we make no doubt, that he will find the way to success. L

WOMAN'S MAD ACT. She Drowns Herself and Two Children at Niagara, A Dalziel's telegram from Clifton (Ontario) on Friday says:—A most remarkable caee of suicide occurred here to-day, when a lady. whose name has not been ascertained, suddenly seized her two cluldren and jumped into the Niagara. River, and was swept over the falls. She arrived here last night from New York with two young children, apparently about five years of age. She registered at the hotel under the name of "Mrs. Brown, of London." and this morning early went for a walk with her chil- dren. Suddenly she was observed to take a child under each arm and plunge into the rapids. Within a few seconds she was seen to go over the falls, still clinging to the children. The bodies have not been found, and there is noth- ing at the hotel to serve to identify the woman. She was a lady in appearance, and her clothing indicated that she had been in good circum- stances.

The local chamber of commerce have now issued a report, in which they state that the Lords of the Admiralty readily admit that these ?m- piovements are necessary, but the difficulty is with the Treasury. This difficulty appears to be for the present insuperable.

Women to Wear Socks,
Women to Wear Socks, THIS IS DAME FASHION'S LATEST DECREE. Every One Wears Them in Paris and They Will Soon Be Seen in England. A new terror threatens woman. Poor thiijg. she is as muoh pursued by danger- ous foes nowadays as she was in the good old times when knights in armour had to ride continually to her rescue. The villain who still pursues her and makes her days one king anxiety and her nights a. hideous dream has changed, to be sure, aud has be- come cf the feminine gender. Some persons, given to elegant diction, call it Dame Fas hi on. The latest danger with which a relentless foe threatens her is the eock. In Paris, according to a high fashion authority, who lias recently returned from there, the long stacking is doomed. Everyone wears ■socks. Boys and girls in short trousers and skirts display a waste of pink flesh between the top of the soak and the bottom of their garments. There is. of course, not this I!anle display in the case of grown-up wearers of the sock, but there are ecificaent other di, advantages to make up for this. The agonies of the woman who is wearing titese things for the first time are untold. If in a moment of absorption in other things she forgets the faot that she has discarded stockings, she is promptly recalled to a sense of her loss by the keen discomfort of her feeling.s. She cannot for an instant remem- ber what is the matter with her. and the sickening conviction that her garter has slipped is the first explanation that occurs to her. Then she remembers, and her horror passes, but the discomfort remains. Of course, socks are chilly. Of course they do away with the ornate and bea-ut -Ifig gurt-sr. with its jewelled clasp. Of course, they make the wearer keenly uncomfortable. She dreads a windy day as she would plague. -A. dt*p oo a carnage or from a train assumes a proportion which horrifies her. But she has the gratifying conscious- ness that she is wearing what fashion de- mands, and that is sufficient to sustain most women in almost any emergency. The socks which have appeared so far for feminine wearers aire mai-ly black. So far silk and 11s1.< thread are the "nly »oatenaJf which have been made into these rormj d footgear. Tiny polka dote, embroidered in coloured silks, adorn them. Clocks in pale blue, red, primrose yellow, Nile green and olive green are ornaments on others. Small Sowers;, rosebuds, forget-me-nots, and tinv bioss'jins which it would puzzle the botanists to identify are also wrought in silk on the new socks. This mact uncomfortable fashion will. pro- bably. reach England simultaneously with the winter winds, slush, and snow. It will b< interesting to eee how many women will court pneumonia and diphtheria, by wearing socks, 2nd how many will continue to wear- id, g stockings and defy fasliioa,
LORD LONDONDERRY.
LORD LONDONDERRY. Speaks at Carlisle on the Political Situation. Lord Londonderry spoke at Carlisle on Friday. After reviewing the i>olitical situa- tion, his lordship defended the attitude of the House of Lords in reference to Home Rule and the other Bills pent up by the House of Commons. Those measures he characterised as either incomplete, unfair, or pernicious, and the outcry by the Radicals against the Upper House was designed to divert attention irom Home Rule and to abolish the only bairn* tietween their party motives and the wishes of the majority of the people of Great Britain. The Evicted Tenants Bill he described w designed to reinstate Messrs. Dillon and O'Brien in the minds of the evicted tenant*. It distinctly legalised the repudiation of debt and of contract, and if such a precedent. wM established it must necessarily extend to Eng- land. when a blow would be struck at the very base of our commercial system. His panacea for Ireland was facility for the transfer of land on terms agreeable to landlord and tenant, the establishment of a Board of Agri- culture. and the development of dairy farming^
