BARCELONA TRAGEDY.
BARCELONA TRAGEDY. Expected Early Release of the Prisoner Willie. A Router's telsgram' from Barcelona, on Wed- nesday states ibat the Eng'Jsbiian "Willi* vrho murdered Senor Bofill, of that city, about two years ago, but was acquitted about two years ago, but was acquitted on the ground of insanity and admitted into a Government lunatic asylum, now shows no signs of madness, and it is believed that he will be released. It will be remembered that Mr. Willie, who was a representative of Messrs. Watts, Ward, and Co.. of Cardi ff and Newport, had some differences with the Bdillr<, and, in a, fk of madness, shot the two members comprising the firm, one being fatally wounded. There was no question that at the time the prisoner was in a very nervous state, and for days before the tragedy he was. unable to get any sleep. Although the murder was a,pparently a cold-blooded one, the people of Barcelona re- cognised the fact that Willie was not responsible for his actions, and when tne first horror of the crime had passed orex they really sympathised with him. His sister, who was with him at the time.' has remained with him ever since, and has as far as possible ministered to his com- forts. It will be a great relief to his friends in Cardiff, who are very numerous, to know that his release is expected shortly.

CANTON'S NEVI RECTOR,
CANTON'S NEVI RECTOR, Reception of the Rev. A. Henderson Yesterday. The reception accorded to the new rector of Canton (the Rev. A. Henderson, M.A.), at the National Schools, Leckwith-rcad. Cardiff, on vV ednesday evening, was a most cprdial and flattering one. The room had been tastefully and artistically decorated in Oriental style, relieved here and there with palms and ferns, which presented a, delightful contrast. The company present numbered nearly 400, and was representative as well as of the parish of St. John's. Canton, of St. Paul's, and St. Cathe- rine's. There were amongst those present the Rev. J. a.nd Mrs. Baker, the Revs, A. Spencer and R. C. Barton, the Rev. J. S. and MM, Buckley, Dr. and Mrs. Broaden. Dr. and Mrs. Evans, Dr. Pearce, Mr. and Mrs. Symonds. Mr. W. P. James. and Miss James, the Misses Rev. A. HENDERSON", Rector of Canton. Lynch-Blosse, Mrs. and the Misses Wake, Dr. and Airs. Richardson, and Mr. Woosey. After the reception, during which a musical entertain- ment was given, Dr. Evans read an address of welcome to the rector from the parishioners. The address stated that the appointment of the Rev. A. Henderson had been received with great pleasure, and his advent had been anti- cipated with much satisfaction. Mr. Henderson was not a stranger to Cardiff, and knew Cardiff work.—The Rector, in replying, stated that sinoe he had been in Cardiff- a space of a week—he had been greatly touched by the cordial greetings g-iven to him. It was like returning- home to old friends, aud he hoped no word or act of his would ever alienate that friendship from him- Mr. He-n, derson referred to the late rector, the Hrv, W- E. Kosedale, and to the late Rev. Vincent Saulez, who was rector of the parish before Mr. Rosedale He would lik«» also, tp refer to the two curates, to whom the parish owed a great deal for the manner in which tliey had so faithfully carried on the work without- a head.—The Revs. J. R. Buckler and J. Baker head.—The Revs. J. R Buckler and J. Baker also spoke.—During the evening songs, and glees were rendered by the choir, and Messrs. Chapnle. Williams, and John, and p;ano solos by Miss'F- G. Lee and Miss Dare. Mr. Wilke; accompanied. BIOGRAPHY OF THE RECTOR. The new rector of Canton (tlic Rev. A. Henderson), who is 40 years of age, lias had a very varied experience that ought to be of service to him in his new parish. Ordained in 1877 by Bishop Frazer, of Manchester—"the bishop of all denominations"—his first' curacy was at St. Oswald's, Manchester. This parish f touched the notorious "Angels* Meadow." Here lie remained for five years. Mr. Hender- son went from here to the London suburban parish of Lilhurst, where everything was a contrast to St. Oswald's. After being two years there he came to St. Andrew's, Cardiff, as senior curate, where he spent, seven most arduous years, and during that time won the esteem and re«p*ct of all the parishioners for his invarying kindliness of disposition and ii in -iri rmTTTrnr—nwmwiwii ■■iiinwni—in—nii earnestness in the prosecution of his labours. Mr. Henderson has. therefore, the advantage of thoroughly knowing Cardiff life. The St. Andrew s people presented him with a cheque for £140 or £ 150 and on the occasion of his leaving for the living of Burton, Pembroke- shire, a few months later gave him £ 50 and a magnificent illuminated address, the work of Mr. T. H. Thomas, the well-known Cardiff artist. After having spent two vears and a few mailt lis at Burton. JVXr. Henderson was called back to Cardiff by the Bishop of Ll.mdaff, but be fore leaving Burton the parishioners pre- sented hi in with a splendid gold hunting watch, suitably inscribed. The new rector has com- menced his cut-ies with every promise of success. On Sunday night last the attendance at St. John's Church. Canton, at which he official.ed, was so crowded that many people were obliged to stand in th? porch, and others failed to find standing room and had to go aw&y.

He Played His Own Dirge
He Played His Own Dirge AND LEAVES A NOTE ASKING FORGIVENESS. A Last Tune on His 'Cello and then OtØ Musician Kuptiz Sent a Bullet Through His Brain. Christina Jergensen stopped on the stair's leading to her home, in East Seventeenth-Etreet, ZCew Y o,k. She had dressed herself early and gone out into the foggy morning after a pall of fresh milk for her sick lodger, old white-haired Josef Kurriz, a musician- She leaned against the stair railing and listened to the sweling strains of music as they floated down the dark hallway and filled the dank atmosphere with sweet melody. She knew that old Josef was amusing- himself by playing. on the violoncello, something he had not done I before for weeks. The music brought back to kindly Christina visions of youth and childhood. 'Her ears were opened ag-ain to the rustling of leaves on the trees in the Wurtemburg- forest?. There were children gaily dancing on, the green turf; the sturdy, rosy-c-heeked boys and girls shouted with laughter— A pistol shot stoppped her musings. The music suddenly ceased and a great stillness which fell ovey the house alarmed her. Ax; ehe hurried upstairs the pungent odour of gunpowder floated out through the door of Kurriz's room, She hea-rd a groan. Kurriz sat on the bed. On his arm lay tj.ie neck of his violoncello, and in one hand a smoking pistol was held. His head v bent over the beloved instrument, and white lor>ks, all dripping with the life b) cr,1 which flowed from a wound in the nkrht temple, intertwined with the strings of the 'cello. The kindly blue eyes were closed in death, aad t-h- spirit which had called s pn.a; from the instrument had flown away. In a notebook was found a written explanation. meagre but convincing- It read: — I write to all who know me that I etinnot bear any more of my life. for I suffer nir 1St un- speakably day and night, and I cannot s teep. I did not think of doing evil, until I h igun to be crazy: not from hunger or bed at? ;ention. as the iandladv has done all she could, for ire. Forgive me, a wicked sinner, this. a d<.oj idly sin. JOSEF KCI aRIZ. The suicide had no relatives in Ameii jica. He went to the United States ten years; iago, and had played in many prominent ore, testra-s' in K ew York. He was a member of the German Army during the Franco-Prussian 'Wa.r. and played in a regimental band. His instrument was an old-fashioned one. and had been in his possession over a. score of years, n Je had suf- fered from a complication of uisea-tee, and had been confined to his ioom for weeks. When they laid the old man out on the 1;¡ed and took away the 'cello it was found that jon.e of the strings had parted. The bon' was tightly clenched in his left hand, where t18 had placed it when lie took up the pistol to fire the fatai ¡ shot.
