I Principality Parlets.
Principality Parlets. GOSSIP AND CHATTER OF OLD GWALIA. A Column of Notes and News of Wales and Welshmen to be Read by Old and Young. Four men have been added to the force of police at Barry Dock. This is bad. Welsh newsagents now announce Welsh mem- bers of Parliament for sale at half a guinea each. Mr. Alfred Davies, of Hampstead and Car- marthenshire, refers to the Merthyr people as "my future constituents." An article on "The Personal Equation in Politics" apwars in the current number of the "North Eastern Leader." It is from the pen of the ltev. W. Pedr Williaans. It is said that, had they lived, the four Maesy- owmmer boys who saw the light at the game time a few days ago, would have been named Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The pack of harriers belong rr to Mr. G. D. Harries, of Lianunwas, near St. David's, has been sold to a gentleman at South port. The dogs left Haverfordweet Station last- we?k. A North-country paper says ^Yorkshire- men play the four-three-quarter system as keenly and proficiently as its Welsh origi- nators." Why is it they never do it when they coire down our way? One of the candidates for municipal dis- tinction at Swansea wears the name of Skid- more, which is Welsh all through since it is a Siroreu Fiddling way of writing Ysgwyd y- mor (shake the sea). A mighty name. During the year which ended on the 30th of September the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society for the counties of Carmarthen, Pem- broke, and Cardigan rendered aid from its funds to nineteen prisoners—sixteen males said three females. Mr. Labouchere expresses surprise in this week's "Truth" at, shall we say the vigorous originality of some of the statements used by th,) Rev. J. Davies, Cadle, when speaking on temperance. Mr. Davies is certainly a. lurid word-painter- A Leeds paper says that Sir William Har- court never used any of the impolite expressions attributed to him in regard to Welsh Disestab- lishment. Then why doesn't Sir George Osborne Morgan meet the statements of Messrs. D. A. Thomas and Lloyd-George? A Cardiff tradesman offers a reward which we fear will never be claimed. Prominently placed on the shop-window is the following announcement:—"Five shillings reward to anyone who will give information on convic- tion to who broke the lamp at -street." It is stated. that one of the candidates for a recent town council election in Wales bargained for a committee-room for a. certain sum and a joints of meat, and that there may possibly be MM Mity-ooort action becswise the joint was not duly fort-hexwmng. TRe uvaureays he will hare his pound of flesh. Since Cardiff set the fashion in having a lord for its mayor the example has been followed elsewhere. Lord St. Levau has been twice mayor of Devonport within a very few years, and now the Earl of Warwick has also become mayor. The "Star" says Lord Swansea was a mayor of Swansea. This is an error. A Welsh collier's wife a day or two ago presented her husband with four sons at a birth, and the children lived about half an hour. The "Daily Graphic" now chips in with the suggestion that possibly the shock of discovering that their birthplace was called Maesycwmmwr was too much for them. Since the nine-foot baa. of the Zoo swallowed up his eight-foot brother there has been no end of stories about extraordinary gulping. So far no mention has been made of the most extra- ordinary swallowing of all, namely, the swal- lowing of life-held principles by Welsh Radicals when Mr. Gladstone became a Home Ruler. In the afternoon sitting of the diocesan con- ference on Thursday the Bishop of Llandaff had a deputy-chairman in the person of a very smart black poodle, which followed the prelate from Archdeacon Bruce's residence after the lun- cheon interval, and sat at his lordship's feet on the platform. The dog's smug air of deference wa.s a lesson iu ecclesiastical etiquette. Pwllheli, the little seaport town in North Wales so much talked about just now in the London papers, has a prosaic name, though dis- tinctly Welsh. It means no more and no less than the "sea pool." Prosaic though its name, the town and its neighbourhood gave birth to some of the best poets Wales has produced. One of them was "Dewi Wyn o Eifion," an elo- quent bard and writer of the yeoman class. The Swansea, registrar, in his official position, j declines to understand what the expressions "outrunning the constable" and "wanting the needful" are. He told a debtor so very sternly on Wednesday. This calm assumption of ignorance makes us really envious. Why, even we, with our limited opportunities of knowing, have sometimes had to grasp the pur-1 port of these expressions. But the president of a bankruptcy court, well there! Dr. John L. Thomas, who operated so suc- cessfully upon Mr. Herbert Cory while house surgeon at the Cardiff Infirmary, gained the Hutchinson Triennial Prize Essay on "Causa- tion, Progress, and Treatment of Fractures of the Skull." Dr. Thomas is a Cardi, and hails from Llandyssil. Old people say lie bears a vwy marked resemblance to one of Rebecca's ine daughters, before whose charges Welsh toll-gates used to vanish like stubble before the flame. It is expected that Morien will shortly be breaking out in a fresh place. He presided over a district council meeting the other even- ing, and a lively discussion cropped up between him and the vicar over one of the workings of the new Act. In the end the Archdruid con- fessed that his acquaintance with ancient laws was much more extensive than with modern Acts of Parliament, but, upon the understand- ing that he would remedy this defect in the case of the Parish Councils Act, a gentleman in the audience presented him with a text-book of the Act. Maesteg is slowly making up its mind to ask what are the Welsh members good for. Com- plaints are ripe that Mr. S. T. Evans never visits "the key" to his own division, and now Mabon is out of favour. The Rhondda Parliament man was exacted to explain the Parish Councils Act to the Maesteg people on Wednesday, and the natives gathered together in a multitude. Not only did "Mabon" not explain the new Act, but he didn't explain his own act in not attending to explain the Act of the Government, and the Maestegites are now more keen to get Ma.bon's act explained- Sir Griffith Evans, G.C.S.I., is a Welshman from Lovesgrove, near Aberystwith, and is the son of the late Mr. John Evans. He is an old Powis exhibitioner, and is well acquainted with literary and colloquial Welsh- lie was educated at Oxford, and for 26 years he has been practising as a barrister in India. He is a. brother to Mr. Lewis Pugli Pugh, nee Pugh- Evans, some time M.P. in the Liberal interest for Cardiganshire, and who is now in India. Sir Griffith is married to a, sister of Sir James Hills-Johnes, of Dolaucothi, and was knighted in recognition of his services in passing the much discussed Ilbert Bill in 1883. He is the Sir Charles Russell of the Indian Bar, and appears in every notable case. d

THE INSULT "TO WALES.
THE INSULT "TO WALES. Supposititious Interview With Sir William Harcourt. Our correspondent "Gwyliedydd," in his "Spirit of the Welsh Press" yesterday, re- ferred to the cautious manner the "Genedl"— the (organ of Mr. Lloyd-George—deals with the. :^(hi4al arising out of the. Sir W'm-ttjt Hareonrt's slip of the tongue. Instead of deal- ing with the matter officially in its editorial columns, it puts its views in the mouth of an imaginary correspondent, who expresses Mr. George's sentiments and indicates his future course of action. The "Genedl" of yesterday's date prints the result of a supposed interview with Sir William, which may be taken as the view taken of it by "Cymru Fydd and its foster-parent, Mr. Lloyd- George. It is as follows :— "Now, Sir William, what amount of truth is there in the story about you and Sir George Osborne Morgan?" "What story?" said he, in a forced tone of indifference, and at the same time blushing up to his ears; "tell me." "This won't do, Sir William; don't attempt to beat about the bush! I ask what you said to Sir George when he asked you to receive a deputation of Welsh members on the question of disestablishment." "You must really excuse me." "No excuse at all. Sir William. I came here to-day to have the matter cleared up once fv all, if you please. He bit his tongue, and did not answer a word. "What did you tell Sir George?" "I do not keep a record of everything I say to every busybody who comes here to gossip, said he, rather sharply. "Thank you for the compliment," said I, quite calmly; "whether possible or not, I want an answer to my question-" "I did not say that you are a busybody. You know that I have great respect for you." "Show it. then, by answering my question. Sir William. Out with the truth." "I may, perhaps, have said that I wished he and his disestablishment were somewhere "Why did you wish to send Sir George and the Welsh me-asure to that place, when you know that they would stand in your way another time V Sir William mumbled something between hi8 teeth, which I could not catch—whether it was an oath or a cough- "Why did you not mention the name of the place in a more, classical form? Why not say 'Hades,' 'hot iire,' or some other word less offensive to the ear of aSWelshman who goes to chapel?" "The truth of it is," said he at last, "I was in a bad temper at the time. The ex- pression was made use of in a moment of irri- tation. Many things troubled hie at the time. There was John Redmond kicking up a row because we did not brinii in Home Rule this year. The teetotalers were bothering about Local Option., and the Budget was heavy on my mind. And——" "Yes, and it was expected that Lord Rose- bery wall to be Prime Minister?" "I repeat," said he, "I had no intention to insult- Sir George or the Welsh members. I was in a bad temper at the time." "Would you have shown such a temper to Mr. Justin M'Garthy if he had called about Home Rule?" "No. There is great difference between the two circumstances. If I had shown temper to the Irish members—•well, we show!.? socm have to resign." I "Was there DO danger that Sir George and his party would turn you out in the same way ?" Sir William roared. "Ha! ha! ha f" he exclaimed: "the idea. of poor SiT George turning out the Government! No fear!" "Suppose "Not the least fear! The Wt'lsh member^ make plentv of noise, but there is na danger of their carrying out their threats." "What about the ievolters?" His countenance darkened for the moment. and he then &aid — "Tush! Revo] ters, indeed! I venture to f.iy that if it came to close quarters we would not have a better supporter than Mr. D. A. Thomas, for instance." "Do you think so?" said I in amazement. "Well," said he, "the. proof of the pudding is in the eating. You shall see when the time comes." "You were, therefore, able to insult the Welsh members without risk?" "Yes," he replied. "You are afraid, Sir William, to insult the. Irish members because they are strong, and you vent your wrath on the Welsh mem- bers because they are weak. It was the act of a coward and a bu^lv. Sir William. But if you wish to kick tihe Welsh members and insult Wales you must do it before the next election." "Why?" "Wh5'? Ill tell you why? The 'Cymru Fydd' will have given backbone to the coun- try by that time, and the country will develop backbone in the members, and the Welshmctn- bers, like the Irish members, will lie men who will not suffer themselves to be insulted by you or anybody else."

4, BEAUTIFUL BRITAIN." Queen Pleased with the Views and has Kept the Specimen Copy. Our readers will have observed from a notice in another page that we are about to follow up the enormous success attending the publication of att.-dvkirt'iS Portfolio of Photo^raplu» by issuing in weekly parte a companion work, en- titled Beautiful Britain: The Scenery and Splendours of the United Kingdom." An advance copy has been submitted to her Majesty the Queen by Mr. W. J. Ritchie, manager in En gland for the Werner Company, of Chicago, who has received the following reply:- "BaJmoraJ, September 16, 1894. "Sir,—I have laid before the Queen your letter and the views of residences in Great Bri- tain. "Her Majesty desired me to ttiank you, and after inspection of the book of views the Queen was much pleatsed with them, and commanded me to inquire if she could keep the one you left here for her and also if she could purchase three more copies.—Yours faithfully, "HENRY T. PONSONBY." No higher commendation of the work is pos- sible. This beautiful collection, which 46 to consist of twelve parts, each containing sixteen views of the same size and quality as those in our former portfolio, is itself a history of our country. The scope of the work is so compre- hensive as to include the most rugged of our ancient ruins and the most luxurious of our modern pleasure houses. The walls under which the Danes: a.nd Saxons fought, the strong- holds with which William the Norman assured his hold on English soil, tllepaJaces of the ornate Tudor period, and—best of all, perhaps— the exquisite landscapes which form the back- ground of all the beauty of Britain—all theee will be found in the portfolio. The ftrst port will be on saile November 9, and, as was the case with the previous work, the book will be sold at a price which will place it within the reach of every reader of our journal. Each part will coet iust 6d. and one coupon, and will be on sale by all our agents, or will be sent by post for one coupon and 7id. in stamps.
CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST.
CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST. Consultation with Sir W. T. Lewis in London Next Week. We understand that the sub-committee of the Cardiff Harbour Trust Committee have arranged a visit to London next week in order that they may consult with Sir William Thomas Lewis, Mr. Perks, and Mr. R. W. Hedley. Although so far the negotiations have progressed satis- factorily, it will be readily understood that in negotiations respecting the transfer of a pro- perty of such magnitude these must be various questions upon which difficulties will arise, and it is in order that these points may be thoroughly discussed between the parties interested that the sub-committee are about to proceed to London
WEIRING OF THE TAFF.
WEIRING OF THE TAFF. Matter to be Discussed at a Council Meeting on Monday. A special meeting of the Cardiff Town Council will be held on Monday next, when Councillor Robert Hughes will move that the time has arrived for the corporation to take into their consideration the advisability of pro- ceeding with the necessary steps to lead to the ultimate weiring of the Taff, in order that addi- tional means of recreation may be afforded to the inhabitants of Cardiff, both by means of boating as well as by the provision of prome- nades."
DOCK WORKS AT BARRY.
DOCK WORKS AT BARRY. The embankment which is being run acrosa the length of the intended new dook at Barry is being proceeded with satisfactorily, and it is expected that the contractors, Messrs. Price and Wills, will complete the same within the coming mont.h. so that the more direct work of the construction of the dock itself will then be undertaken. The passenger line between Barry Dock and Cadoxton is being widened with a view to duplication, and excavations from the embankment are being tipped into the timber pond for the purpose, we understand, of levelling the same for sidings for the new dook.

Steamer of the Future
Steamer of the Future MAY BE NEARLY A QUARTER OF A M'ILE LONG. The Fuel will be Crude Oil and Many Devices will be Adopted to Increase Speed. to i An American. writer, in a recent paiper on the further development of the Atlantic "grey- hound," foreshadows the various directions, ill which the ocean racer will be modified with a. view to attain greater speed and; efficiency. The hull will probably receive the first attention; aluminum, or one of its alloys, is likely to ultimately supersede iron and, steel, both in p La two and shapes, as it has barely one-third the density of steel, but possesses equally high tensile and duo- tile qualities. There are also great possi- bilities for nickel steel in this connection. The model of the ship may be expected to be fi^ed down and shaved away so as to re- semble in its lines a modern yacht rather than a metamorphosed OOillaJ. boat; and the forefoot wiH probably be further cut away, so as to ensure greater ease and rapidity in turning, and relief from the severe strains to which the rudder and steering gear are now subjected. Harbour channels will have to be deepened1, and then, with increased hull depth, the probable praotical length of the ocean steamer of the future will be 800ft. to 900ft.. and the beam will follow in propor- tiont. having dlue regard fofr the require- menite of speed and sea. qualities. The in- tensely severe internal stress arising from, the vibration of the machinery must be neutra- lised in some way, and some effective oom- pensation for this trouble will, in all likeli- hood, be applied specifically and locaMy to each engine on the bread principle of the resultant of divergent force. This ii even. now being successfully accomplished m some of the torpedo boats in England, allil there should be no great difficulty in carrying it out on a larger scale of ocean practice. The question of stiffening the interior of ships' hulls will naturally receive more attention as they increase in size and their machinery in power. The writer predicts that the future transatlan, tio liner will, for business and compettitive reasons, probably lie a shorter time at the dook and spend more days at see., and carry only such classes of freight as can be loaded and discharged with, great despatch. The tendency in regard to masts end rigging is toward tihe carrying of but two light and graceful ste/el pole masts, made hollow for ventilation, orte being placed forward and one art, and kvfcended merely for steadying the ship in a heivv sea. These masts can be fitted with small navy "tops" as stations for look-ourte, searchlights, and. electric signals. But the pre-eminent ques- tion willI be speed. More screw* will be in- troduoed and MHrespoaidin^y more engines behind them. The steamship of the future will be fitted not with three, but with eight or ten bronze propellers, each making from 1,000 to 1,500 revolutions per minute and driven by high-speed rotary electric motors running in oil. The fuel will be crude oil, and: the skin will be made mirror-like so as to reduce the friction of the hull in the water to a minimum. Another important change will be the eixtension of automatic action as applied- to all of the operations that go to make up the management of the modern eteamehip. Human agency will be superseded by a train of mechanism, and improved methods will be devised for steering, stopping, and reversing the ship. In fact, it ittQDim no stalwart imagination to foresee the <Wt)J)t control of the engines passing into the hands of the commander in the pilot-house or on the bridge, by the simple intervention d 6 wire connecting an index and button at his side, with a small motor in the engine-room that operates a piston attached to the throttle bar.
MERTHYR REPRESENTATION.
MERTHYR REPRESENTATION. Mr. Davies, of Hampstead, Attempts to Capture the Labour Vote. Mr. Alfred Dayies-, of Hampstead" hM visited Merthyr during the present week and, in the course of an interview with a "Mertbyi' Times" reporter, he has made it manifest that he is still determined to present himself at a candidate for the representation of the borough at the next Parliamentary election. The justifica- tion which he offers for foisting himself upoa the constituency is that, as the Conservative candidate, in his opinion, has no chance of being returned, it is only right that the Liberal working men electors should have a voi,>e in the selection of other candidates than the sitting members to cha.mpion their interests in the House of Commons.
