THE ,. COFFEE COOLER."
THE COFFEE COOLER." Boxing with O'Brien at Pontypridd and Cardiff. The tour of Frank Cr.aifc' and his party .'n Wales met on the whole with a ■lecul id aniourit of success. "Mabon's Day" iu the llhoixlda wis oertair.lv a liappily-ci):cn dute, for e1" wds of people put in an appearance at the Bvtoher's '•nns Ynr i in the nfternoo- the f-hovv pvt-u heins? on all hands voted an unqualified success. Pi-oeoedinps were commenced by the "Cooler" irivmg solos on the mouth-organ, a performance which eiioited considerable applause from the Rhoudda Valleyites. Then eame the serious business of the afternoon. Fred Iseusee and Mike Stillivan opened the sparrinsj entertain- ment with a three-round bout that gave the utmost satisfaction. Isensee has sparred with some of the best light-weights in America, and proved in each case his claims to cleverness- The bout between him and Sullivan was of the most scientific order, and there wa.s practi- cally nothing" to choose between the men. Sulli- van, who had the pull in the weight, was, per- haps, a trifle the smarter with his right. Red- mond Coleman and Collins provided another interesting encounter, whilst Forster and St. John were the last pair preceding the. bout of the afternoon. The spar between O'Brien and the "Cooler' was certainly of the most scientific k cription. each of them hardly placing a glove on the other. THE COLONIAL-HALL, CARDIFF. The proceedings at the Colonial-iiall, CV.'diff, practically followed cut the program- ie of the Tontypvidd entertainment. All the boxers enumerated above rendered their services, litliough the show vua i-pened by the musical entertainment of Craig, whose solos cn the mouth-organ and piasitstlon danoinn provoked the most enthusiastic applause. The conclusion of the performance was a two-round spar between O'Brien and the Cooler," followed by a similar number of rounds between the 'Cooler" and his trainer. Professor Dennis Butler. Too much praise cannot be given to the last-mentioned gentleman, who. as master of the ceremonies, manoeuvred the crowds both at Pontypridd and Cardiff in the most happy fashion. Craig expressed the utmost satisfac- tion with his reception in the district, a:! 1 reiterated his intention of making a, fortnight's tour through the Rhondda Valley in the near future.
FALL DOWN A LIFT.
FALL DOWN A LIFT. Sad Acoident to a Cardiff Lad at the Ice Stores. On Monday afternoon a lad named David FIlycott, of 23, Havelock-street. Cardiff, met with a shoe-king accident, which, it is feared, will have a fatal termination. The lad, who was in the employ of the Cardiff Fish and Poultry Company, about two p.m. was ordered by his employer to carry some pheasants to the ice company's stores, ij"! Penarth-road.. He did not return, and inquiries were instituted as to his whereabouts, without result. The lis pager of the fish an-2 poultry company at eight p.m., fearing that t.he lad had met with an accident, drove down to the Ice Company's premises, and, together with the storekeeper, commenced a search for the lad, who they subsequently found a.t the bottom of the lift well, which communicates with the several floors of the storage sheds- The poor fellow had evidently fallen a distance of about 30ft. When extri- cated it wa.s found that both of his legs were fractured, and that he had received serious bodily injuries. He"was conveyed to the Cardiff Infirmary and detained. —

SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT. Barristers to Take Silk in the Coming Year. Opr London correspondent writes :—I learn that Mr. John Eldon Binks and Mr. Thomas Terrell are likely to take silk in the early part of the coming year. Mr. Banks comes of a great legal family. On his father's side he is a descendant of the late Lord Eldon, whilst his mother was a daughter of a late Lord Chief Justice. He is extremely popular on circuit and one of the handsomest men practising at the Bar. Mr Thomas Terrell will, I understand, devote him- self to patent work, a branch ef the law which he has made peculiarly his own. The South Wales Circuit will be particularly strong in leaders when this change is brought about.

COMMAND OF THE ARMY,
COMMAND OF THE ARMY, Lord Wolseley to Succeed the Duke of Cambridge. The Exchange Telegraph Company learns that an official announcement of the retirement of the Commander-in-Chief may be expected as soon as the Treasury has sanctioned a special super- annuation allowance to his Royal Highness, in regard to which objections have been raised. It is not, however, anticipated that the Duke of Cambridge will leave the Horse Guards before next March. The Exchange Telegraph Company understands also that Lord Wolseley will become chief of the staff at the Army headquarters, Horse Guards, on the abolition of the office of Commander-in-Chief, and that Lord Roberts will be appointed to fclic com- -and of the forces in Ireland
NOVEMBER HEAVENS.
NOVEMBER HEAVENS. Something More Absut the Receding Planet Mars. Most unfortunately the opposition of Mars was attended in Cardiff and South Wales with unfavourable wea.t-her: iiii fact, not for many weeks have the skies been serene enough for satisfactory observations. Let us how, how- ever, that the rest of the year will witness an improYemellL Mars is still well visible, though receding1 from the earth and rretting dailv g-radually smaller. I append two sketches: the first a rough reproduction of a drawing by M. Antondadi. taken by aid of M. Flamniarion's telescope, aud showing a number of camds. In this sketch the phase of the planet is strongly marked. The second sketch (taken near opposition) is by an amateur telesoopist who lives a few miles out of Car- diff. and shows the same side of the planet a-s M. Antomadi's drawing. Mars will be near the Moon on the evening of November 11. As Mars is receding so Jupiter is taking up a favourable position for the amateur, being well placed hr.gh above the eastern horizon by eleven o'clock in the evening. Jupiter's belts and four larger moons are easily seen with a comparatively small telescope: not so the fifth satellite, wluch 1S amongst the most difficult of telescopic obects. Its discoverer- Professor Barnard, is still studying it attentively. From a host of careful measurements made with the Lick telescope lie is confident that the satellite is not brighter than a star of the thirteenth magn't;;de. which. of -course, accounts for it remtining so long unknown to astronomers. Its sidereal pe-riod appears to be llh. 57min. 2?.see., and its diameter-from north to 75 miles, and at the equator 56 miles. Of the other planets mention must bp made of Mercury, which on the afternoon of the 10th passes ;GS a. small black dot across the disc f the sun. Unfortunately, the phenomenon only commences in this neighbourhood half an hour or so before sunset; but in America at can be excellently observed. The Moon is full on the 13th new on the 27th. The annual meeting of the. British Astrono- mical A Pèi'o('tj"1. the lending amateur society in Great Britain. was held a. few (bv8 ago. when Mr. E. Walter Maunder (of Greenwich Observatory) wa.8 elected to the presidential (hair. The society ha-s 879 members, eleven of whom are resident in Wales. Many provincial towns have astronomical societies, some of the larger of which are affi- liated to the B.A.A. Several local amateurs and others have suggested the formation of 8U0h a. society at Cardiff, and those who would care to identify themselves with the movement are requested to communicate with the writer, at 41, Hamilton-street. MASTER OF THE TEMPLE. I Canon A'mger Pays Tribute to the Dean of Llandaff. There was a. crowded congregation at the lempie Church the other morning (says a London correspondent) to welsome Canon A m ger on his first appearance as Master of the Temple. He delivered an eloquent serin(ili on the power of the pulpit, and at the close paid a touching- tribute to Dean Vaughan and his 25 years' service in that place. Speaking of the late Master's intel- ,-rCtual attainments, Canon Ainger referred -o liis scholarship, his mastery of the Greek t m.ent, his unfailing freshness of thought snd treatment, and his euphonistic grace, re- I ail.U4 his far-off relative and namesake Henry "Vaughan. In dealing with his spiri- tual gifts attention was called to Dr. Vaughan s deep understanding of the human heart, his singular power to read the con- science, and his moderation, which last, said Canon Aing:er, incurred the penalty if penalty it were—that all extreme men passed lightly by and no party journal ever spoke the applauding word. But there was compensa- i • veu lor the scorn of the religions n&vvs- m[»er m the knowledge that thousands and Hundreds of thousands of homely and uncon- :T-cversia.I lives had been purified by the preacher's winged words.

Cardiff. The rev. gentleman is suffering from congestion of the throat, coupled with hemorrhage, but, notwith- standing these complications, Mr. Shepherd continued his duties up to a few days ago, when he broke down altogether. His medical attendant is of opinion that there will always be a danger of hemorrhage returning should he again overstrain his voice, and, as a con- sequence, Mr. Shepherd has intimated his in- tention of resignaug his position, and of seek- ing elsewhere a less onerous sphere of labour. Although Mr. Shepherd has been in Cardiff but a short time, he has made many friends, and his determination will cause much regret not only to members of the St. Andrew's con- gregation, but to all ranks and conditions of men.

Smart Sherlock Holmes, ,
Smart Sherlock Holmes, DR. DOYLE'S DETECTIVE REDIVIVUS. "Van Clupper" Tells How He Recovered the "Swag" in a Welsh Jewel Robbery. When I entered the club-room a gentleman, in the far corner raised his head from the paper he was reading, and glanced quickly at me. His peculiar facial expression was fami- liar to me, aid I knew the man in an instant. It was Sherlock Holmes, looking as shrewd and as pleasant and as full of quiet energy as ever. "Why, Holmes, old fellow." I remarked, when our formal greeting was over, "I thought 1 you were dead. Didrd Dovle kill you after all?" "Truth of it is," said Holmes, with a. good- humoured twinkle in his eye; "he got a bit tired of writing up my experiences mont.h after mcuth, and he told me he was gomg to kill me. I gave. Doyle full discretion in the matter, and he made me fall over a precipice. I did have a nasty fall, it is true, but I wasn't absolutely killed. I have often told you I was a wonder- ful amateur trapezist in college, and my ape-, like agility served me in good stead on this occasion. I caught hold of the branch of a tree. This broke my fall, and I managed to clamber down the rocks to a place. of safety." "And what brings you into SouthI asked him. "This is a return visit. I came dowin here some months ago to unravel the Penarth Gorilla. Mystery, and did so within a few hours, al. though the public never knew whom to thank* for the elucidation of that mystery. Your chief has some good, wine and cigars at Cwrt-y- viI," continued Holmes, his face lighting up. with pleasant memories, "and we spent two or. three jolly evenmgs together." "To what interesting circumstance are we ia«( debted for this, your second visit?" I in-. quired- "I have been spending a rather long holiday- in North and South Wales," replied Holmest "aaid have just finished a. little job which has not only brought me credit but also enabled me- to pay off an old score." "Ra. ha. said I, smelling "copy," "just the very thing. I'm out ice- the evening, and nothing would delight me more than to have one of those inimitable yarns of yours. Tell meaill about it. Holmes. I'm sure the story will be worth hearing." -V "Well, as I've also got the evening to -go; through somehow, I don't mind if I do." said Hoimefs, evidently fcra'e.Tting that I ww a newspaper man. Then, taking a cigarette out of his well-stocked case, he slowly lit it, and, settling himself comfortably in his cosy arm chair, he began. "Perhaps I ought to explain to you ait the beginning1 thafr the .detecive force of the iul, kingdom Is, to use a vulgar expression, 'dead nuts' on me, and you will, therefore, not be surprised when I tell you thw a reoom- made byv a \91511 member of Parliament to a Welsh head-constable that I should be engaged to unravel the mystery of a big jewel robbery some time ago in the Principality was rejected in a manner that I r TOu-ldered to be mdfc' and offensive., the terms of the letter written by the head- constable to the M.f. being that I might lie all very well in ifie jiages of the Magazine,' but they were not going to en- trust the unravelling of aiM important matter like that of a big jewel robbery in every- day life to an amateur. 'An Amateur,' fancy that! Sherlock Holmes an amateur! I am not revengeful as a general thing. Clupper, but I felt the rebuff keenly, and I reigistered a vow, in the presence of my friend Doyle, who was dining with me when the M.P. sent me the head-conf-table's letter, that ere many months had pa-sued I would compel that head-constable to publicly pay tribute even to my 'amateurish' abilities. I have had my revenge, and feel peaceful, calm, and happy when I think of it. This was how it came about. A second robbery took place from a silversmith's shop, and about; £ 2;000 worth of jewellery was found: to have been taken away by the thieves, of whose whereabouts: the police, ill spite of most strenuous efforts, could not obtain the slightest clue. There was immediately a great huubuo amontg the people of the town where the robbery took place, and pUb-he meetings were held at which reflections were made upon the efficiency of the police force, as this was the second occasion on which the burglars had gone undetected. While this hubbub was at its height I wrote the head-ooastable offering him my services, and making the .only condition of their acceptance an undertaking from him that. in the event of my bringing the thieves to justice or recovering the booty, he should publicly acknowledge my success. He agreed to the terms, and 1 came down to S — by the next train. I immediately proceeded to the police-sta-lion, got all the detectives before me. and, having heard tiiflil stories, which were, I may remark, laii baLi, I turned to the head-constable and said, Vou have hitherto been pceptical of my sisawk- ness as a private detective., and you have ae- cepted mv services Ðidtt days after the bar- glary has been committed. During that time you have had no trace or clue of either the thieves or the missing articles. Therefore, to you the task I am undertaking seems hopeless. But Sherlock Holmes has never yet completely failed, and when he lavs his head upon the pillow to-night it will be with the conscious-, ness that he has met with some measure of, puccess.' The head-canstable gazed inore-i dulously at me, and the faces of the detectives wore sarcastic expressions. 'I see, you think; I am fooling you,' I said; 'but Sherlook; Hahnes has a .reputation and he is prepared- to stand or fall hy what he has said.' I wanted:, to ftiake the thing as mysterious as possible, for my own prestige's sake, and extracted promise from the heffd-constaWe not to ques- tion me as to my methods of work if I suo-t ceeded in my undertaking. I then left the police office, and mingled with the crowd in the public street. I had arranged to return to the police-station at midnight, and the clods --III tWE'7ve xv was just striking twelve when I entered the head-constable's sanctorum- 'Of course, you have discovered the thieves and recovered th« booty?' remarked the head-constable, with a tange of sarcasm in his voice. 'I have re- covered the booty.' I replied dryly 'but the thieves, although discovered, are not likely to be caught vet To cut a long story short. I produced the whole of the stolen jewellery, "dlich was returned to,, its owner. With reference th" thieves. I conyinced the he.ad-eonst:1 b18 that there was no doubt about their having managed to pass right under the noses of the police, and to reach New York in safetv. The recovery of the stolen property was regarded by the public as a big achieve- ment, and my reveng-e was completed. The b'id-constable came down handsomely, for. is his letter to me. which will in eke oourse b3 P'ibli?hed in the daily journals, lie not only 6lyes me credit for what I succeeded in doing, but refers to me a, the smartest detective in. the United Kingdom." Holmes having finished the narrative, leaned back in his chair, and. wrinkling his brow with a self-satisfied air, begaon rolling another ciga- rette. '=' His case wa.s, as already intimated, well stocked, but he "rolled" a cigarette. beea.us€ lie used to do so in the "Strand Magazine. I watched his quiet, unassuming moTementt for a. moment or two, and then, breaking HHÎ silence. said, "Your narrative has been af deeply-interesting one, Holmes, but the most; interesting part of it is yet to come. Foi heaven's sake, relieve my suspense and tell me how did you manage to recover the stolen property so quickly. "Well, old man, replied Holmes, with & forced laugh, "as I have retired from 'public life since Doyle got tired of me, I don't mind telling you privately, but don't breathe 3 telling you privately, but don't, breathe 3 whisper of my explanation to a living eoul. oommitted the burglary myself "VAN CLUPPER."
