LIBERAL UNIONISTS. Is Ex-Minister Chllders Joining Them P Our London correspondent. telegraphs:— 1 Mr. Childers. who since the Home Rule sur- render in 1886 has fallen oat of line with Glad. i stonians and has notfallen in with the Unionists, appears to ha-re terminated his prol-onped spell of hesitancy. He hag been a frequent listener to the debates in Parliament, particularly during the Home Bule session, but has given no public intimation of his views till now. I say till now advisedly, becanse he was present at Mr. Courtney's meeting at Bodmin on Thursday night. Indeed, there was quite a rapproche- ment between the two Liberals. Mr. Childers istsned approvingly'to Mr. Courtney's Unionist views, and Mr. Courtney praised Mr. Childers' last Budget, the one on which Mr. Gladstone rode for a. fall in 1885.

INSTITUTE OF JOURNALISTS. Forthcoming Banquet by the President- Elect. The executive committee of the South Wales District of the Institute of Journalists met at the Great Western Hotel, Cardiff, ou Friday to arrange for the banquet which Mr. David Duncan, of the "South Wales Daily News," the newly elected president, intends to give next Saturday to all past and present members of the institute now resident in the district by way of inaugurating his year of office. The chair was occupied by Mr. W. J. Needle, and the secretary (Mr. E. Parker) informed the committee that Mr. Duncan desired to place the detnils of the interesting event entirely under the control of the committee. Accordingly, an ideal press gathering was arranged, with the mini- ti.am of speech-making and the maximum of entertainment, the itmsical portion of which will be in the hands of Dr. Joseph Parry. The president-elect has expressed a strong desire that there should be-, a very large gathering of pressmen on the occasion, and a circular in con- sonance with this desire .w»s( ordered to he sent out. Some other busio/j.ss connected with the district was transacted, and other important matters deferred to the general meeting of the members of the district, which will be held on the afternoon of the 20th inst. v-]

SOUTH WALES ART SOCIETY.
SOUTH WALES ART SOCIETY. Some of the Pictures at the Winter Exhibition. [.BT A SPECIAL CORBESPONOENT. j The South Wales Art Society opens it* faevc-nth i.nnual exhibition of pictures this (Saturday) afternoon at the Public-hall, Qneen-i-treet, Cardiff, and from the private view with which our representatives were on Friday favottred we venture to predict that the public will find in the exhibition very much of local and general interest. The col- lection of paintings is fully up to. if n-ct over, the average, aud the exhibition has this advantage over it-s predecessors., that the artificial illumination is t-n the must modern Vriuciple—no other than the prismatic electric system of Messrs. Fowler and Lancaster, of Bir- minghaju. We believe we are correct in saving that tikis, the best and most perfect known substitute for sunlight, has never been applied in this country before, and had the matter lain with the corporation it is safe to say the exhibition would not have benefited by it either, at least this year. The society, however, tu-,d Mr. G. J. lleetlestone, who is taking a very active part in the arraugejnenti?, in particular, despairing of musing! ike- Atty — fH.tflPN<" • from their irit&ii- bers, went straight to Lord Bute, obtained from his apparatus at the castle the requisite eloetric power, and got it switched on to the Queen-street hall, with the result, that to-day's exhibition will be lit in such a manner as to set at defiance the uncertain light of this most dismal of autumns. We have already spoken of the exhibition as thoroughly up to the average. It contains over 300 pictures, many of which are deserving of more careful notice than we are aUe to afford in our columns to-day; but we hope for :;not-hor opjxwtimity of dealing- with those treasures which to-day we are compelled to pass over for want of space. Paintings by the late Karl Midler were the cent-re of attraction at the last show, and this year {tha-rk.? again to the Mar- quess of Bute) a. picture by that great artist graoes the exhibition. It is No. 4-0 in the cataloigue, and is called "Holy Night," and may be described as a sublime conception exquisitely -worked out. The Virgin Mother gazes down im rapt adoration on her Babe, and Joseph and ethers stand around, all, like the Virgin, illumined by the wonderful light that radiates from the Infant Saviour. Having gazed long at this r-iiafsterpifet-e, we move round the room and select here and tliere a notable picture for attentici.. No. 95, "The Children's Prayer" (Arthur Hacker), is a powerful picture, well grouped. The subject is a beautiful one, the tone quiet, and the flesh painting exquisite. Hagarty's "Cottage Homes of England" (98), though weak in conception, is in tlie artist's usual style. The autumu "tints are pretty, but there is something wanting in their arrangement. "Evening at 1'akous, Egypt" (R. T. Kelly—96), is a grand picture, full of subdued tones and quiet har- monies. "Cattle on Harlech Beach" (90), by Henry Moore, I, an agreeable landscape of monotioivras soenerv and rolling cloud, whilst in the foreground &.re isome black cattle. In 77, Laaice Calkin's "Land of Nod." we have a charming, but difficult, subject, the kitten, in especial being very true to the life. "A Cinderella' (Mia striken the eye as a power- ful and well painted study: it will have maaiy admirers. "The School of Art, Cardiff" (2), is characteristic of Mir. Edga-r Thomas, and, at the fame time, something to marvel at* His crude palette of mainly black and white is not calculated to win the applautie of the general public; but, nevertheless, there is a something in Mr. Thomas's paantiiw which apjieals to the artist, and promise's in the future the attain- ment of a standard of excellence which many now popular painters will never reach. No. 115, "After Glow" (Garrido), is a sublime study, but one it is doubtful the public will appreciate; the same remark applies to No. 182, "Nymphs, by the same artist. 'The interest- of a most in- teresting exhibit, ion will be found to centre largely in No.24-l,HubertHerkome«-'s magnificent portrait of Archibald Fortes. No one can gaze on this grand study of the grizzled war eorrespondeait without feeling the power that haunts the conception: it inti4, be seen to be admired, and the spectatoi will return to It again and again with feelings of si newest plea- sure. Walter Cook's "July Evening" (265) is a clever study, with a good sky: the whole does credit to its artist, :1. local gentleman. In "A Moving Story" (Sasit—56) we have a very sweet subject painted in the composer's most agreeable tints. Those who love the human form divine will be charmed with Luis Faiexo's "He. loves me, lie lows me not." This glow- ing maidon has a lovely face: but the whole is somewhat lacking in technique. Nevertheless, the general effect of the study is very delicious. Walden's "Moonrise" (39) is a. charming sea- scape, quiet, in tone and subdued in colour. It Ü:, perhaps, to be preferred to a similar sub- ject, No.~262, "The Last of the Sun," by the same artist, which is also a, clever and delightful study of waves on tbs seashore. 62. by Edgar Thomas, although but a rough sketch, is an interesting portrait of the a.rtist.. Mr. Hall Neale. in his interpretation of a lady amongst poppies is very happy: he has produced a most agreeable little picture, lioth in brightness of colour and in technique. Rat-bum'e ",} nst ;1, Song at Twilight" » a. supfrh study in brown- it is No. 36 ip the catalogue. Mr. S. M. Broad luus several very inter,est-ing studies in the exhibition, ore of the most noteworthy a,nd cfiannijig of which i, "A Pembrokeshire Moon- land" (80). Miss Gwenny Griffiths's portrait of Archdeacon Griffiths (71) is a fair likeness, and a very creditable production. The young ladv is a daughter of the well-known Swansea physician. Other noteworthy pictures which we can only nwnt-ioo are '>&n the Wye" (H. W. B. levies—208). pastel yiortrait of Miss Jessie Rovds (Miss Gwenny Griffiiliil-188), "-Misty Daiy on the Sand T-lills, Glamorgan" (H. C. SlieiHiard—225). and "Sappho" (G. n. Edwards, —165). LKCTPBE ON ANCIENT PAINTiNG." We notice that affoeigJbt o'clock this (Saturday), evening a locturc will be delivered at the University College, Cardiff, by Dr. Percy Gardner, professor of archfeology at Oxford, on "Ancient Painting." Professor Gardner, it may be recollected, lectured to a large andienoe three years ago at the college on Greek Athletics," and all who were present were delighted with the lucid: atTic and the interesting matter of his discourse. It is hoped that many will find-themselves able to attend this lecture, though they may not have the time to follow a course by Professor Richards on Classical Vase Paintings," to which it is intended to be introductory. A lecture on this subject appro- priately falls on the evening of the- day on which the annual exhibition of modern paintings is ,opened in the town.
