LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. "THE MASQUERADERS" AT CAR- DIFF THEATRE ROYAL. To-night (Monday) and during the week Henry Arthur Jones's latest success, "The Masqueraders," a play which has just come to the end of a glorious run at the St. James's Theatre, London, will be staged at the Theatre Royal. The Masqueraders is universally considered Mr. Jones's fineist and most daring effort. One scene especially in the play—that wherein a card-gamble occurs, the stakes being a man's wife against another man's £ 200,000—is reported to be the most powerful scene ever portrayed on the stage. The com- pany appearing in the piece is exceptiocally large. Mr. Conway Wingfield represents the hero, David Remon," and the heroine will bs delineated by Miss Hall Caine, a daughter of the eminent novelist. Special dresses (by Worth) and scenes accompany tho play. GRAND THEATRE, CARDIFF. Owing to managerial arrangements, "Little Lord Fauntleroy will not be staged at the Grand Theatre this week. Instead, Howell Poble's stirring and realistic Anglo American melodrama The Game of Life" will be the attraction at Mr. Soune's house. The play is brimful of sensatitn. A Cardiff lady. Miss Maud Stanton, impersonates the heroine, and she has won great praise for the excellence of her portrayal. A coach and horaes are intro- duced in one act. The Game of Life was recently played before the Prince of Wales and the fltfficers of the 10th Hussars. THE EMPIRES. CARDIFF. Mdlle. Texarkansas, an extraordinary dancer, who has won for herself the peculiarly American name of "The Streak of Lightning," is the bright particular star at Mr. Stoll's Cardiff house this week; other artistes in the delight- fully-varied programme are Driscoll's Sketch Company, in Social UndertaJdngs- G. W. Kenway, mimic; George Ripon, comedian the Wartenbergs, equilibrists; Maude Dal- maine, soprano vocalists the Halliwells, duet- tists; and last, but by no means least, Lottie Collard, the elegant song and dance turtiste. NEWPORT. That whilom Cardiff girl, and singularly sweet songstress, Miss Lucy Clarke, will charm all habitues of the Newport Empire during the present week by her cultured and dainty vocalisation. Other artistes are Andrea Wood- ford, serio-comic; the two Blakes, Yankee comedians; the M'Cennell Family of vocalists Alice Ormonde, serio-comic; the Farley Trio » musical clowns, and the famous and incom- parable troupe of Selbini cycle riders-the cleverest combination on the boards. SWANSEA. That Mr. Stoll's engagements are excellent goes without saying, but it would be extremely difficult for the manager of the three Empires to concoct a finer programme than that which will delight patrons of the Swansea Empire this week. Carl Hertz, the premier illu- sionist of the world, will exhibit his latest miracle, After the Flood," at each performance. The other variety artistes are the Sisters Preston, fresh from their recent London triumphs; Rose Dale, serio- comic Gallimore and Kenyon, acrobats and dancers; J. P. Curlett, Irish comedian; the Sisters Spencer, vocalists and dancers. and a grand spectacle entitled Queen and Country," in which numbers of Swansea children will go through various military evolutions, under the guidance of Mr. Tom Herman. THE PANOPTICON, CARDIFF. A new and important spectacle, entitled China and Japan," will occupy the boards of the Panopticon this week. Special scenery has been painted for the piece by Mr. J. Watson, and numbers of trained children, besides the Sisters Edwards, George Burnett, and Rosina's dancers, will take part therein. Mr, Stoll makes the important announcement that all the side shows will this (Monday) night be "emancipated," which is his graphic way for saying that no other fee than the admission fee will be charged to patrons. Cardiflians will welcome this change.
WORK ON GOOD FRIDAY.
WORK ON GOOD FRIDAY. SOUTH WALES MINERS AND THE RAILWAY. The several branches of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants in South Wales continue to urge upon the miners of the district to entirely cease work on Good Friday, in order that they may enjoy the holiday on that day. Good Friday has come to be regarded by raal- waymen as "the railway orphans' day," and the miners, by working on the occasion, de- prive great numbers of their holiday and stand in the way of help to tho orphans. Last Sun- day the three Cardiff branches of the A.S.R.S. appointed Mr. W. H. Burnell, of 115, Arran- street, Cardiff, to be the oorresponding secretary on the subject for this district, and the South Wales Council, which met at Merthyr, adopted a resolution urging the miners to acquiesce in th" railway men's views. A deputation from the railway society is to waJit upon the next joint meeting of colliery proprietors and workers, and will submit to it an appeal that on the day named all work at the collieries shall be stopped.

LORD ROSEBERY.
LORD ROSEBERY. CURIOUS RUMOURS AS TO THE LIBERAL PREMIER. Lord RoseBery, says the "St. James's Gazette," is gradually recovering from Lis illness, but his recovery is slow, and his state of health is by no means satisfactory. The expectation that he will be able to resume the active command of his party imme- diately is not likely to be fulfilled, and cautiously-worded semi-official paragraphsare being published, which seeift to point to a long period of "rest." Thus the "Standard" —"There is reason to believe that it will be necessary for the Prime Minister to take a prolonged period of rest. His strength has been greatly reduced by his illness, and it :s not expected that he will be able to give close attention to public affairs for some time." Hence it is not surprising tha.t a rumour begins to gain ground in political circles that Lord Rosebery m:¡,y seek to obtain "a pro- longed period of rest" by resigning an office which he has not been able to hold without considerable friction, a.nd which is uo longer very oongenial to hial Our London correspondent, telegraphing on Sunday night, .,S :-The long-desired boon of sleep has come to Lord Rosebevy. He has had a good night, and was this morn- ing so much improved that Sir William Broadbent consented to his taking a short drive during the sunny mid-day. Luckily, the weather was all that could be desired for an invalid's outgoing, being both oreezy and balmy, with bright sunshine.

ILANELIY EISTEDDFOD. OPPOSITION OF THE MARKET STALLHOLDERS. The proposal ef the LlaneHy Borough Council to hand over the whole of the market for the holding of the National Eisteddfod is exciting the keenest hostility of the stall- holders of the market. Already they have taken legal advice in the matter. On Friday afternoon they appeared in s, deputation befitre the council, and asked that sbme consideration should be extended towards them. They ex- pressed themselves willing to give up the western portion 4-f the market for the use of the eisteddfod committee, and, as this would iuclnde the now hall, they were of opinion that this would be quite sufficient. They protested against the proposal to use the present hall as a. Kuseuro and art gallery in connection with the eisteddfod, and claimed it for their own use.- It was decided to refer the matter to a committee of twelve, representing the stallholders, the council, and the executive of the eisteddfod.— On Friday night the stallholders held another meeting, and appointed Messrs. T. Jeffreys, D. Treharne, D. Jones, and M. Cosker to act for them on the committee. It was decided to accept nothing less than the use of the eastern portion of the market and the existing hall for that week.
FATALITIES AT CARDIF F.
FATALITIES AT CARDIF F. THE ACCIDENT AT THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY STATION. At the Cardiff Infirmary on Saturday night Mr. E. B. Reece held an inquest on the body of William John Webb, aged 57, of Bristol, and a member of Mr. A. Rousbey's Opti atic Company, which has just been fulfilling an engagement at the Cardiff Theatre Royal, and who was fatally injured on Friday in an accident at the Great J Western Railway Station. Mr. A. Roberts, a Great Western Railway inspector, was present representing the company. Mr. Webb, in saying good-bye to his brother mi Friday, was standing on the footboard. When the train started he fell between the footboard and the platform, and sustained such serious injuries as to cause his death the same evening.—Evi- dence having been given, t.he jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death" and attached no blame to the railway officials. ANOTHER INQUEST CARE. A second inquiry was then held into the cir- oumstances attending the death of Frank Blake, aged fifteen, of 20, Tudor-street, Cardiff, who was crushed between the buffers of some coal trucks on the 25th of February, at Cardiff Docks.-A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
"BROADER BRITAIN."
"BROADER BRITAIN." FRENCH VIEW IN PART IV. OF THE SERIES. Is it an affectation that we find a fascination in everything French? Are we foolish to carry our admiration for that, nation even into the new vorlds and linger with affection in the French atmosphere of New Orleans or Quebec? The disappeairance of French rule from America, is only less interesting than the permanence of French speech and civilisation in that continent, and two characteristic views in Part IV. of "Broader Britain" sound the charming note of French romance—Pittsburg, the old Fort Ququesne (named after "Lo Grand Duquesne" of Dieppe), in Pennsylvania, re-christened after the great Minister who lifted England high above the Jeflt of the world over the head of France; and New Orleans, the oity of commence, bought away from tho French with its Creole civilisa- tion of the past and its great wealth of the future. _———

ELEYEN ROUNDS FOUGHT. A STUBBORN GLOVE FIGHT AT SWANSEA. On Friday night a determined glove fight took place at the Pavilion, Swansea, between Dicky Price, of Cardiff, and H. Morgan, of Swansea.. for L10 a-side and a jBIC wager. The Cardiff representative was seconded by W. Foster, while Morgan was looked after by C. Warmer and Lucas, Mr. Hopkins, of Swansea ,holding the watch. After the pre- liminaries had been arranged the two young aspirants fa-ced each other. They both appeared to be in "good condition, although Price had only for a. short time been in the hands of his trainer. The first round was in favour of the Cardiff representative, who made good use of his righfc The second round also proved in his favour. Morgan now showed signs of weakness, and in the third round appeared very shaky. In this round his seconds appealed fur a foul, but the referee ordered the fight to be continued. In the fourth round Price again made the most of matters, and made good use of his right, landing a blow on Morgan's jaw which staggered him. The latter, however, answered the call of the referee, and seemed to revive. From this point to the call of time Price fell away, and Morgan, taking advantage of his opponent's eeernin- weakness, fought for all that he was- worth, and ultimately won a well-contested fight in the eleventh round.
CURIOUS RUMOUR.
CURIOUS RUMOUR. ALLEGED MURDER AT WAUNAR- LWYDD. A rwnour was persistently circulated on Saturday night at Swansea that a shocking murder had been committed at Waunarlwydd, a village five or six miles out of Swansea. The rnmour was so briskly circulated that, as a result, the supposed scene of the tragedy was visited on Sunday by several press representa- tives. At Cockett (only a mile from Waunar- lwydd) en route the mmour was confirmed, but it appeared that less was known of the tragedy at Waunarlwydd than anywhere else. Diligent inquiry there resulted in the discovery by the "sold" pressmen that a row between husband and wife and a sinister suggestion of a knife were the sale foundations for the rumour.
ECLIPSE OF THE MOON.
ECLIPSE OF THE MOON. A MAGNIFICENT VIEW AT CAR- DIFF THIS MORNING. This (Monday) morning, shortly before two o'clock, the last total eclipse of the moon which will be visible in England this century took place under the most perfect conditions for accurate observation, and afforded, even to the casual sightseer, a spectacle of sublime beauty. In a sky which was absolutely without a single cloud to mar the spectacle, the queen of night shone out with a pure white light which gave her the appearance of hanging right away out of the stellar and planetary worlds as if to heighten the effect of her disappearance behind the earth's shadow and her subsequent re-appearance when the obtruding blackness had passed over her. The eclipse commenced by alight, almost im- perceptible, shadow appearing on the north- eastern side of the moon, and this was followed by the dark-red shadow of the true eclipse. By 2.¿5 an-L half the moon's disc was obscured, and it was scarcely three a.m. before the obscura- tion -,aa complete, and then slowly the shadow passed over, and between four and five o'clock the moon was again visible
