LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.I
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. I A SENSATIONAL DRAMA AT THE THEATRE ROYAL. The sensational drama by Langton MitcheII. entitled "The Slave Girl" was presented at the Theatre Royal on Monday night by Sey- mour 11 edge/j celebmted company. The company is a powerful one. and gave a ihrill- in.T representation of the piece, which is full of stirring inc-idents illustrative of the dark days of slavery. Miss Elizabeth Eaile, as "Esther," the slave girl, was a lifelike heroine, her acting being very emotional and excep- tionally powerful. Mr. James C. Aubrey as "Edward Hamilton,1' filled the role of hero with consummate ability. Mr. Alfred Donohoe was most amusing as a Yankee pedlar, and the other parts were in capable hands, the efIect of the whole being heightened by the beautiful special scenery. There was a large audience, and the piece created so favourable an impression that a succession of crowded houses may be confidently antici- pated during the week. "CLAUDE DUVAL" AT THE GRAND THEATRE. One has only to mention that. "Claude Puval" is an' up-to-date burlesque for it to be under- stood that the piece is a dramatic hctfh-potch. The art of burlesque writing seems to have died out. and recent pieces produced at the Gaiety and. ei^where, although called "burlesques, arc; really extravaganzas. Only the latter name would atone for the vagaries and inconsisten- cies of "Claude Duval," '0 successfully produced at the Grand Theatre 011 Monday evening. Of course, no one expected to see a dramatic repre- sentation of the adventures of the bold, bad higlr.vivyman after whom the piece is named, but the character, as created by the genius of Mr. Arthur Roberts, and so clevo-h ■porn-.v-fd at the Rrand by Mr. H. C. Barry, is certainly an eye-opener. First, we meet him in his own character of a desperado, and anon, with lightning celerity, his identity is lost in the persons of a barmaid, a fin-de-siecle danely, a woman of fashion, and a host- of other cha- racters. The piece throughout is laughable, and sometimes witty. Tlu- imisic is lively, the dances and choruses pretty, aud the artistes infuse sufficient dash into their jKjrformances to make a visit to "Claude Duval" highly enjoy- able. In the title-role Mr. H. C. Barry bt,, rather a difficult part to play. The character abounds with so many of Mr. Arthur Roberts's whimsicalities and so much of that incom- parable artiste's "business" that any successor must inevitably find it an exacting role. in his "barmaid" and "shopwalker" scenes Mr. Barrv was delightfully humorous. Miss Wini- '"red Hare's "Marjorie" is played in her usual charming and winning manner, and the various songs allocated to her are rendered with enjoy- able freshness. Mr. Michael Dwyer makes a fine, robust "Sir Philip," and "Percy," most ludicrous of dudes, is exceptionally funny, a remark tha.t also applies to Mr. W. T Thomp- son in the part of "Sherloek-Holmes-Spotter." A powerful chorus is engaged in the piece. THE EMPIRES. CARDIFF. We can safely assure those patrons of the Cardiff Empire who did not attend that popular house of amusement on Monday eve- ning that the bill of fare provided by Mr. Oswald Stoll for the present week contains not one weak turn. The items which call for special mention are undoubtedly Professor Loekliart'.s performing elephants. These animals obey the beck and call of their master in a truly marvellous manner, and the sagacity they display could not possibly be excelled. The Tliree Faues are a trio of acrobatic per- formers whose equals it would be difficult to discover and their "turn" was received in a most appreciative manner. Other "turns" are contributed by Miss Lillie Dano+ry. a sparklinjjr serio-comic: the Sisters Hcther- ingtoti, duettists and dancers; Town&end. Josephine, and Lucretia, variety artistes and dancers; Cromo and Soli, burlesque dnettwts: the Macdonald Troupe of five dancers: and Barney Armstrong, a very taking comedian. NEWPORT. Pleasantly diversified is the programme at the Newport Empire this week. and a most enjoyable couple of hours can be spent at the cosy hall in Charles-street, On Monday evening there were s crowded houses. Apollo, the strong man, gave his remarkable performance, which, it is needless to state, created mnch wonder. The ease and grace with which he accomplished his difficult feats won the envy and admiration of all present, and he was heartily applauded. Screamingly funny were the Karno Trio in their novel sketch, and George M'Cnlloch, comedian and actor, was re-called several times. Sarina, a giotesque contortionist, and Madame La,lo. trick cyclist, introduced very novel "tnrns and Le Clair, with his performing fox terriers; Mark Sheridan, the plain comedian; the Two Prim- roses, song and dance artistes, and the Two Violets, duettists and dancers, contributed largely to the enjoyment of the evening. SWANSEA. The chi 'f attraction in a very varied enter- tainment in the Swansar Empire on Monday night was the appearance of George Lash wood. The popular artiste's new character song. The Women of Mumbles' Head," had received such a deservedly enthusiastic reception at Cardiff and Newport that it wss only to be expected that the Swansea public, whose town had pro- duced the heroines, the subject of the ballad, were bent upon hearing Mr. Lashwood's latest success.. The song was received with demon- nations of enthusiastic approval, ond the so dee.L o the heart of all true Swansea boys. In response to demands for an encore George Lash- wood sang "'The Tip ter," and in this most amusing character he wis as great a success as in his dramatic songs. Jdiss Ida Heath demon- strated her right to the title of being one of the cleverest dancers in Great Britain, and excellent tnrns were also given by Katie Le Blanche, serio-comic; Bee and Wilson, eccentric cyclists Crossley Sisters, duettists Tom Wootwell; 1\ comedian and the Sisters Leo, serio-comic. THE PANOPTICON. Several unusually great attractions have been provided at the Panopticon this week, and the performances on Monelay were largely patr0.rir.e3d. The first position OIl the bill is occupied by Hassan Ali, the Egyptian Giant, a man of extraordinary proportions. He is I about 8ft. in liei rht, and is stated to be the tallest man in the world. He is accompanied by a Nubian boy. a handsome lad, not much more than half the stature of his Egyptian com pan ion. Another interesting turn is that of Berry, the ex-hangman, who describes his ex- periences as public executioner in graphic style, and illustrates his lecture by limelight views descriptive of convict life. An amusing sketch is given by the Alexandre. Trio, and Mr. Fred Griffen executes a numher of clever and diffi- j cult acrobatic feats. The other turn in the stage performance is that of the little Sisters Morgan, two well-known local duettists and dancers, who earned well-deserved honours at the recent pan ton li me at Cardiff Theatre Royal. The various side shows are as popular as ever. NEW THEATRE, SWANSEA. At the New Theatre, S,f\,t18ff1t. was produced on Monday night, for the first time in the town, a oomedv-drama entitled. "My Native Land." i The company got together by Messrs. Garside and Wharton includes Miss Eleanor Reardon. who plays the part, of "Winnie Blake," and gooe" through both her adventures and her songs with conspicuous ability. Mr. Henry Coburn tnkcs the part, of Andy." the husband of Winnie." Mr. Garside that of "Dr. Masrree," and Mr. Wharton that of "«Newy Boyle." The scenes. both in England and America, are full of inci- dent and interest. .?

CHAPEL SCANDAL. PREACHING TTNDEli POLICE PRO- TECTION. The strained relations between the Rev. E. C. Mason, pastor of Three Crosses Welsh Congregational Church, Gower, continue to in- crease in intensity, but pending the result of the interpleader action, the rcy. gentle- man continues to preach at the chapel. On Sunday he preached under police protection- one constable being stationed inside the building and a second outside, escorting Mr. Mason to and from chapel. Nothing In the nature of a scene occurred. The police are of opinion tha^ Mr. Mason's fears of personal violence to pre- vent him preaching are reasonable.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. THROWN FROM A HOUSETOP AT LLANDYSSIL. Mr. Harry Baskerville, of Carmarthen, lineman of the Postal engineering depart- ment, and his assistants were shifting a telegraph post and fastening a wire to a chimney near the Bridge Shop, Llandyssil, on Monday, when the wire snapped, pulling him clean over the housetop. In the act of falling he shouted to a man Who was directly under him to "Look out, below!" which caused the man to clear away and thus esca.pe serious injury. Mr. Baskei-Nille landed on his sridie and hand, and escaped with a fracture of the forearm. Mr. T. Evans, medical student of the Edinburgh University, who happened to be on the spot, examined him, and then took him to Dr. H. H. Davies to have the a.rm set. Mr. Baskerville's ankle was aleio slisrhtlv injured. He left later by train for Carmarthen. -?-

POLITICAL SITUATION.
POLITICAL SITUATION. BOTH PARTIES PREPARING FOR iA DISSOLUTION. ra! News is in a position to state that determined efforts will be made from the Opposition benches immediately after the Whitsuntide recess to force a dissolution of Parliament. Both parties have been pre- paring secretly and with unobtrusive activity for eventualities, and in Unionist circles it is practically a fixed understanding that the appeal to the country will not be deferred beyond midsummer. The Liberal party would regret a break up just now, because it would mean the loss of the Bills now before Parlia- ment, a.nd would leave the motion with regard to the House of Lords amongst the undeter- mined resolutions of the session. In Govern- ment circles, moreover, the fact that the situa- tion i-s growing daily worse is now boldly faced, and it would be virtually untenable if Inverness-shire -should be lo-sl In that event Ministers would, it is believed, not wait for an adverse vote in the House. Those known to speak the mind of the Front Bench say that the Conservative leaders know almost to a week the date of the dissolution. -?.??

11.000 Pieces of Skin THE MEANS OF SAYING A LAD'S 1TFE. A Remarkable Operation of Skin Grafting Successfully Performltd on Fred. Griffiths. There is a little ioN, in Man tela ir, America, who had such a joJy Fourth of July celebra- tion last year that he hasn't got over it yet. He nearly burned himself up with fire-crackers, and the wounds wouldu't heal. The only thing the doctors could do for the little boy was to try "skin-grafting '—that is, picking out nice, clean, fresh little bite of skin from people's arms and getting it to grow e>n the sore places. And ever since last Fourth of Jtily the doctors have been doing this. It seems wonderful to relate that they have skin- grafted" no less than 11.000 little pieces of skin on him, and it will take about 5,000 more to entirely heal the burns. Now, while this skin-grafting is very wonderful, it isn't so difficult, and it isn't dangerous at all. The biggest difficulty to get the supply of good, fresh, healthy people who are willing to jiave little holes cut in their arms. Fortunately for the little Montcla.ir bay, the people of the town have taken a great interest in him. and have cheerfully agreed, to give up just as many chunks of their arms a- the doctors want. To tell the truth, it has become quite a fad to contribute to the skin fund, and most of the supply has been taken from the pretty girls of the town. This little boy's name is Freddy Griffith, and he lives at No. 87, Forest- street. His father, Mahlon Griffith, ifnt a rich man. Freddy is twelve years old. The first operation was performed in August la.st. and tHe Griffith home was besieged with men and women, boys and girls, of all ranks and conditions of life, anxious and eager to be operated upon for the benefit of the little sufferer. At tat time Fred was not able to be out of bed. He lay with suports under his body in such a position as to keep the in- jured pa.rts from coming in contact, with any- thing that might irritate the burns. The gen- tleman who first volunteered was accepted, and the first step towards the ultimate saving of the bov's life was taken on a Sunday. Two hundred pieces of skin were taken off the gentleman's right and left arms, and his wife aaid daughters eonttriHuted three hundsred pieces more the same day. Since then about eleven thousand pieces of skin ha.ve been pi?' on the burned surface., and1 the phy- sioiajis estimate that it wil 1 require five thou- sand pieces more to complete the operation. The PKINHGRAFTIIN^ SYMPOSIUMS T^CK place every Sunday ajid every Thursday. Now that the cure is nearly completed the doctora only work on Sunday. Fred is now able to sit up in an invalid's chair, and during the operation is not under the influence of anaesthetics. Not more than half » doaen persons are in the room whiel the grafting is in progress. The party generally consists of the two physicians, the boy's father, and the volunteers -uct more than two at a*kxMk. The volunteers first ba.re their anns. The doctor then gives the arms an antiseptic wash, in order that every particle of dirt may be removed. It would not do for even an infinitesimal particle of foreign matter to remain on the graft when it is applied to the boy's wounds, This shows how exacting nature is. Then the doctor shaves the surf-ace of the arm that he is going to operate on. By this means the cuticle is brought to its virgin whiteness, and loses even1 its growth of tiny wrfiite hairs. Then the operator takes a small pair of pincers, so delicate that the points can scarcely be distinguished with the na.ked eye, and, with a quick motion.: raises a, piece of skin. This he nipis off with. a pair of scissors. As fast as he gets the graft he throws them into a glass dish contain- ing diluted salt and water, which serves to cleanse them a.nd keep the vitalitr in them. The grafts ransre in sise from one thirty-second of an inch in length and breadth to one-half an inch, but very f'l''W pieces as Wge as the latter have been cut While Dr. Halsev procures the grafts Dr. Case puts them on the bov's wound. The grafts are handed to him out of the glass dish by Mr. Griffith, who handles them with tenotomes made especially to '■« order of Dr. Case for the purpose for which they are used. They are small, narrow-bladed knives, straight, running point even finer than that of a needle. The points are so fine that tliey cannot be seen un- less held close up to the eyes. They have long, plain bone handles. As quick as Mr. Griffi passes over a graft on the end of one. of them to Dr. Case, the latter returns an empty one. An idea of the rapidity w-th which the jfcy<ri- cians work may be gleaned from the fact that on more than one occasion they have out, cleansed and applied six hundred grafts in two hours. Some days they apply many more than on others. A good deal depends upon the condition of the burns. For instance, they have lost several weeks owing to the boy hir- ing contracted slight attacks of slAness. A few months ago he was afflicted with bron- chitis. and the doctors eouH r ot work upon hia burns at all. More recently he had a severn oold, and they had no oease operations agaia. "When the boy suffers from any sickness his poor burned thighs get sick with him, and it would never do to apply any foreign skin un'esa the burns were in a first-class condition, that is, for burns. The smallest number of grafts ever applied at one time has been 125. Tlx* greatest number of grafts taken from any one person at a timo has been 150, but one young man became so enthusiastic over the case that he gave about 1,000 pieces of his skin to be transferred to young Grimths's limbs ?-
