-?->?-?- LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. "THE HOME SECRETARY" AT CAR- DIFF THEATRE ROYAL. Political priufiples should lie like ciutln arniotie—strong-, but Hex:l>lc—a protection, list not a.n impediment." This is one of the roanv caustic, cynical remarks that abound m Air. It. C. Carton's latest play, "The Homo. Secre- tary, ■produced at the Tlieatro Royal cqL Mon- day evening. The dialogue i.; sometimes brilliant, and often contains an epigram that reiimds one of an author who is now without the pale of society. Tint of dvamatio situation there is surprisingly little in the play. "Dun- can Trendel," "the Home Secretary," is an advanced dwnoci-at, who. fortunately or un- fortunately, is married to a woman whose political principles are strongly compounded of Jioispscy and >Sooial:sni. Iliis unique com- bination ultimately drives their marriage through, three stages—"doubt, recrimination, wtranpeonent. The liuslxand and wife go their different ways; eventually tht-y realise their folly, and re-unite. That is the plot, disen- cumbered of its political verbiage. To the man of the world and to t-li/? politioal part, isa.n "The ITotne Secretary" ii £ Fords a very pleasant evening's amusement, but-, regarded as a1 drama pure and simple, Mr. Carton has not rej>e«ted the success of his '"Liberty Hall." Miss Hall Caine's "Rlioda Trendel" outrivals her recent famous portrayal of "Dulcie La-roadie." She invents thft charaot-er with ;I.' wealth of womanly e-ha.nni, of subdued pathos, and' artistic charac- terisation. Mr. Hnny Stanford is hotir manly and impressive in ihe part- of "Dimciin Trendel," and three tine character studies are oontr'biit £ {? by 'Messrs. Charles Gondh&i-b, T. W. Dunscombe, and Cljrade AgJUfcvr. Mrs. 'HMitTTiBifci, a.f1' oMCatdilf favourite, renders a Jine portrayal of 'Lady Clotilda." The mounting and dressing are particularly worthy of notice. MisT JTall Caine's dresses especially are "two lovely for words. THE GRAND THEATRE. ITaidie PDII. Von Leer's "The Plunger" was staged at, the Grand Theatre on Monday evening, and the popular old drama- was Tlrmh md liy a, Moll-selected company nf artistes. The plot is we'll known, and its enthralling and. sensational character was appre- ciated by a large audience. NEW RAILWAY TO LONDON.I
NEW RAILWAY TO LONDON. IMPORTANT STATEMENT BY SIR 0. 0". JENKINS. Tt will lie rem em lie renl that Sir John .Tones Jenkins made one of a party of Swansea gcntle- I men who visited Barry Dexks one day last week. Sir John, in 1'}Jr'aking to a "Cambria Dailv Leader*' reporter of the visit, said :— "I was at Barry with the trustees and the local railway ejflieials last week, and we saw the pier they are constructing for facilitating the Channel (passenger traffic, which, as you know, ha-s increased enormously of late. In this connection the Barry directors have hit ul)on an idea which is novel, and the carrying out of which will, I believe, be remunerative. Ttiey intend to issue circular tickets enabling passengers from the Rhondela and Cardiff to land at a.ny port in the Channel, and to return, if they choose, by a different route. They have e-hosen the Mumbles as one of their places of I landing, a fant that will materially increase the usefulness of our pier, and. of course, improve the prospect of its being a paying «ionee.m. "Talking of Barry, Sir John, do you snow 11 there is anything new to be said of the proposal to make niinw trunk kiie from Loudon to |Sw;u.seaY" '.t don't know that anything 'new' can ie said, hut I am aware of this that the piopo-al is being very seriously entertained in the eastern End of the county. Its promotion is hE'JJg- conducted by men of position, some f.f whom are 4Mii»ia! £ iii..tUe most astute aud £ iici- getio capitalists in Glamorganshire." And you really think there is a prospect of the scheme 1 icing carried through?"' "I saw on my viisit to Barry many indi- cations of earnestness, many signs of deter- mination, and there "s ro doubt whatever—- not the slightest (loaM-tha.t application wiil shortly be made to Parliament- for flowers. The application for powers will probably ixisy a large sum, and a liberal proportion of tiiae money is already in hand. "If I am not trenching too mwi on your affairs, S r John, would you mind raying if you or any other Swansea capitalists are e;ncre-ted in the .schemer' "Well, up till quite recently my attitude bas been that of a r-vmpafhetio looker-on; Now, however, some other Swansea gentlemen anel mvself have l>een asked to join ,n the move- ment, anel T shall i>robablv consent. shall do so because I believe it would- be greatly to the advantage of Swan=fa- anel not onlv of Swansea, but of the chief South Wales towus— to have another connection with London. "That will mean another big light w ith the Great Western Railway' "That, doesn't trouble me much. Eights with them arc nothing new to me. V*l- have had so many that I have l>ecome almost mured to them, and I really think they have' grown to regard me as their natural enemy. "How would you foreshaelow the effect of such :1. line. Sir "Well, the first effect would, undoubtedly. 1. that which we have already seen since the opening of the Rhondela and Swansea Hay- the reduction of rates, and consequent benefit to th traders. Since our line eipened, the Gq'l Western fares from Briton Ferry and J.'orf- Talbot to Swansea have been reduced, and manufacturer: have had greatly improved fi-cight terms." ? "I i.-L. the rcute for the proposed new line been settled?" "Not yet- There are two routes suggested. and the promoters will select the better of these." "You think that the matter is one that should rail for the cordial co-operation of all Swansea people?" "I most certainly do. The advantages of a competing line are obvious. 011 just jn- stitute a, comparison Ix'tween the fares charged by the Great Western from London to the North end from London to Swa-mea. and you will see what the public have to gain by this scheme." "Do vou consider the line would nay?'' Peeic'eelly. In the first p'.iee the ee.st of obtaining an Act of iarlia.meut is very much Jtss n'w than formerly, and by the use of modem machine]?.* and latest appliances rail- ways call be constructed cheaper tJwa A'.hen the Great Western made ♦heir line. That 1")11';¡: >'0, we should not require to earn n-.ii 'h as tlicy in order to ]iav dividend. I think it would pay handsomely." "'What- do you think would be the attitude of Parliament to the project?" "'From mv experience of Parliament, I have very little doubt that when we can show them the injustices which South Wales towns suffer, and the undeniable advantages which would accrue from this new undertaking, they would willingly grant powers." --?-?-,??- -c-?--
COLLIERY ACCIDENT.
COLLIERY ACCIDENT. During the small hours of Monday morning a slight explosion of gas occurred in the Penrliiw C'ohiery of the Messrs. PRAISE FOR CARDIFF I A CASE OF SUC ESSFUL TRADE SPECIALISATION. "The name and fame of CamlilT as a. ooal exjjorting centre," sats our contem- porary, "have spread all over tbe, civilised world, and if ewer there was a ca.se of success- fill trade specialisation it exists m this go-ahead nnd energetic town, which has at length actually achieved the distinetion of being aliout, if Lnt. the first, pOT.t in the world for the volume cf its coal export*. It is to Cardiff, then, that we must go if we wish to learn all that is to be known about the leraeling of coal, and so very important au .tern has this brane-b of ()l1r exixirt trade- liecome, and. in conscqueiK-o, so keen is the competition, that :t is absolutely necssary for every port which possesses faci- lities for ooal loading and discharging to keep right up to eV.u} with the thousand-a-nd-one time and labour sa-ving appliances which •• *e'e now been brought into the h11'IIIt' To C.ir- diff, ttien. our representative journeyed, and the result of his visit was to fully confirm the most favourable anticipations." demonstration was soon given of the "'II[\,1've110:1" order, quietness, and ranidity"wvh which ihe coal is transfemd' from the pit's mouth to the "hurrying" steamer. "Tn the grvat Bute system the work of co.il loading has been reduced to a science, both iu the way of expedition and of freedom from breakage. A visit to Carvliff would be anything but compl.-fe (the writer goes on) without railing at the Dowlais Iron- works, which he spe?ks o-f m highly appre- ciative terms. In large businesses a great deal, of (ti)\1l'i'f', depends on system, but just a.s much is due- to the personal influence, and of those nt the head of affairs, and no one can go to Cardiff without feeling t,11,;t this latter factor is mainly responsible' for the remarkably successful administration of the port."
