Interesting Archaeological Discovery. "Above we give a sketch of a most curiously-carved stone, which has been found by the workmen now engaged on the excava- tion of Old Cardiff. It was discovered near the site where once stood the Western Mail Buildings. and, although the hieroglyphics have not yet been deciphered, it is supposed' to relate to a festival, which was annually celebrated among the poor of that town during the latter portion of the nineteenth century." -Extract from the "Aerial Navigator," June bui. SUICIDE OF A WELSH GIRL.
SUICIDE OF A WELSH GIRL. TOOK ACETIC ACID FOR TOOTH- ACHE. An inquest was opened at Hereford In- firmary on Tuesday touching the death o-f Clara Nov llo Jones, 19. of Merthyr. who had died at that institution from the effects of poison. Elizabeth Jay, a young woman, keeper of a common iodgir.g-hou«e, said that the girl came to Hereford about the end cf .J Llv with her sistvr and two younc men for a holiday. Since then the girl had remained with her as a com- panion, and they gOt on pretty well. Her mother and sister called several times during the hop picking and fruit-gathering to try ;tii,l induce her to go with them, but she would not go. although the mother beat her. She had said she would sooner die than go back hQtre. The address of ithv mother was given as Mrs. Henry Mcrley Ma-wport, near the Cyfartnfa: Works, iMerthyr. Witness did not under-: stand the coroner'having an address 8. Som=r- ■' set-street, Brynmawr, except thst the motner; had married again recently, and perhaps re- Iwwtd. She had never threatened to do any- thin- to hers-lf, but witness had since heard that sh-i had been asking a saw-sharpener abc..t poisons.—John Waites, e butchers boy, said that about a quarter to twelve he saw the girl in St. John-street, leaning against the wall and spitting. She had a small bottle in her hand and drank out c! it ana then «raa.n.-ed the buttle ai.d st^i.ip«i ( on it. She walked a few yards, laid down, valked a. little further, and fe'l down. Witness looked at the label, and, seeing it was printed "Acetic acid," told a gentleman, who fetched a doctor from cio?e by. The doctor adminis- tered magnesia, and the girl vomited. A policeman afterwards picked up the bottom of the bottle, and r.oticed red powder, as if the girl had .not shaken up the stuff.—Mr. Jackson, chemist, whose assistant served the girl with an chemist, whose assistant served the girl with an ounce of acetic acid for toothache, mid he could rot under star d there being any powder m it, a^; acetic acid should be colourless.—Mr. H. G. NicSolscn, house surgeon at the infirmary, raid that the girl never lost consciousness until the last. The cause of death was hemorrhage, caused by the action of the acid on the intestines. The girl told witnesr. she had taken the acid for toothache, and, finding it he gasped, and it all went down. She said she had no il.tention of suicide.—The bottom of the bottle 'o was sent for from the polioe-stution, and there was seen to be a lot of red powder and some white.—The doctor and chemist thought the red powder was precipitate 7X>wder, but they undertook to analyse both that and the white sediment.—It was supposed that the deceased had put them into the bottle after trurchasing th? acetio acid.—The inquiry was ? adjourned until the annlysin was produced. A VERDICT OF SUICIDE. At the adjourned inquest Mr. Jackson, the chemist, said that, from the analysis he found the red precipitate to be red oxide of mercury, which was slightly soluble in cold acetic acid. and it was reasonable to suppose that the girl drank 30 grains of the oxide, as well as "the. acetic acid.—The House Sunreon said that would a £ T2Tavate the power of the acid and account for the stools of the deceased previous to her death.—Other evidence was civen t-how- ing that the deceased had boueht ? precipitate powder a fortnight ago, and remarked at the time it was enough to kill a person. She bought, it to put- in her hair. Deceased had been lcr.v spirited for a week or two.—The jury rpturned a verdict of "Suicide whilst in an unsound state of mind."— In the course of the proceedings a letter from the deceased to a friend at Merthyr was read. but it threw no light whatever on the sad tragedy.

| NEWPORT INFIRMARY. MUNIFICENT OFFER FOR A NEW BUILDING. The directors of the Newport and Mon- mouthshire Infirmary had brought to their notice on Tuesday a munificent offer on the part of Dr. and Mrs. Garrod Thomas for building of a new infirmary. From time to time the site, the style of building, and the general arrangement of the present in. firmary have all been lamented, but, in lieu of an entirely new scheme, additions have often been made to the existing buildings. In order to place a scheme for an entirely riew establishment upon a sound initiative basis, Dr. and Mrs. Garrod Thomas have made known that they will give JS5,000 condi- tional upon £ 15,000 being provided by the public, exclusive of the site. within three years or that they wil] contribute a third extra to any lesser sum than £ 15.000 within that time—that is to say, they will contribute £ '1,000 for each clear £ 3,000 raised. The hope is expressed that the offer will be taken up and a determined effort made to secure a pew inr rp.jry

PHIL PHILLIPS' RHEL- MATIC CURE. Another most reaiarkable cure of sciatica from Mr. Phil Phillips' remedies for rheu- matism has just come under our not:ce. The applianoes for which Mr. Phillips ha= secured patent rights were originally intended as a cure for rheumatism, but while rheumatism is an affection of muscles, sciatica is connected with the nervous system, but a-s the one is J intimately associated with the other, the rheu- matic appliances have now. m several instances, been found equally efficacious in the cure of soiatic-a. The most recent case that has come under our notice is -thai of Mrs. Cooanl>s. who kefps a small. general shop on the Penarth- road; near Ctive-Tmd. G-riangetown. She is a woman of middle age. who has for years stiff-red from sciatica in both hips. The pain she endured she could not describe. She oould not sleep, and was frequently unable to rise to attend to her brsiness. She had -p- nt ]-age sum; of money in purchasing -oatent medicines, paid to be certain cures. She had brought numberless bottles of Mr. Andrews" embroea- tftm, but all wa« to no purpos-. About a month since she heard of Mr. Phil Phillips' rheumatic cure, and the was recommended by some of her friends to try them. She saw Mr. Thillips at I business premises, St. Mary- street. Cardiff, and 'he recommended her to try a b..h. She did o, and alnwst from the first, the pain ceased, 'and she Was abL to move afcou: with ease. The beit, she aid. seemed to put' new life into her, and as the pain ceased she became a new creature. She moves about with case, and has. had no return of pain since she commenced wearing the belt. The chsnge she I considers tmosit remarkable, and .sine feels younger. Her husband also confirmed her statement as to the great change that had taken "Dlace in 'her .since she commenced wearing the belt. "She is another creature entirelv." he said. 'and oertainly she a-prvared as active, as j any woman coutd possilbv be at her age.

MR W. S. CAINE AT LLANELLY
MR W. S. CAINE AT LLANELLY TEMPERANCE AND THE LIBERAL DEFEAT. Mr. W. S. Caine addressed a meeting at Moriah Chapel, Llanelly. on Tuesday night, under the auspices of the Liberal Club. Deal- ing with the temperance question, he said he was willing to admit that it had something to do with the defeat of the Liberal party at the last election, but he believed it was more due to Disestablishment. The Church had called out that it was in danger, and the country had saved it. Now it was for the Churchy to save the country. Some of the Londosr papers had advised the Liberal party to throw over its tem-nerance p'onnsals. but J it was absurd to suggest anything ol the kind, because temperance legislation was now part and parcel of the Libera] programme. The Direct Veto Bill of Sir William Harcourt had been grossly misrepresented, and false friends were now suggesting that it should be thrown overboard because it lost a few votes at the last election, but if they only took up measures for the purpose of get-ting votes the sooner the Liberal party went to pieoes the better, It was a singular fact that the only opposi- tion to the Veto Bill came from the licensed victuallers, who said that what the Liberals proposed was to place the "trade" in the hands of a few temperance fanatics. Now, that was a, gross misrepresentation of the Bill. because teetotalers were only one in nine of the population, and by that Bill a majority of two-thirds was reoivired for the extinction or the reduction of public-houses in any community.

Killed the Wrong Man
Killed the Wrong Man MERCHANT MISTAKEN FOR A BURGLAR. Detectives who Did the Shoolire Hurry Off to a Lawyer when They Find Their Mistake. Five detectives of Chicago met a man in the street whom they took to be Clarence White, a burglar. They shot the man dead, and then learned that he was Frank White, a reputable business man. When The detectives discovered their mistake they rushed at once to Attornev Luther Lafiin Mills and retained him. They gave up James Mix, one of the detectives, as the man who did the shooting. It i., probable that Superintendent M'Donald and the four men who took part with Mix ui the shooting will be arrested. The affair has caused wide- spread indignation in the vicinity of the tragedy. Four months ago the house of Norman B. Ream was entered and robbed of jewellery and money aggregating in value £ 1,000. Mr. Reajn engaged the detectives to run down the A portion of the plunder was recovered and the detectives became convinced that the burglar was Clarence White. Thev obtained a warrant for him, and as he is a desperate man they have been hunting him with a posse. Superinten- dent M'Donald posted his men on Loomis- street. At nine o'clock two men drove up in a buggy. "There is White," whispered one of the operators. The men in the buggv were com- ma.nded to halt, but paid no attention to the command. The detectives began shooting and the man driving fell dead in the rig. The other jumped out and ran away. An examination of the dead man showed he was not Clarence White, but Frank White, confectioner. A trail of blood led from the buggy to the sidewalk, and it is believed White s companion was badly wounded. His identity has not yet been learned. The men who did the killing awt that White and his companion began shooting first. The police are of the opinion that White and his companion believed the dJeieetives were highway robbers and whipped up their horse to escape.
FIVE JIEX DROWNED.
FIVE JIEX DROWNED. A CARDIFF-LADEN SKIP WRECKED. The three-minted Norwegian barque Anne Elizabeth. 398 tons, Captain Simensen. bound from Cardiff to Christian ia. with 531 tons of coal, left the Welsh port with a total crew of eight on the 19th, and bade fair to make a successful voyage until Sunday night. At that time she was off Start Point, but the in- creasingly strong east wind prevented much headway being made. The vessel commenced to drift, and all day Monday was tos-ed about the Channel. When daylight began to break on Tuesday morning the Manacles were dis- cerned. and additional sail was put on, with the view to avoiding the land, but the velocity of the wine and the swirl of the tide prevented the barque from answering her helm, and just before seven o'clock she sruck with t^eTrer.dc.u? fcce against a portion of the Manacles to the vast of Contrive Bay. a small opening in the iron bound coast between the Manacles and the Lowlands, about five miles from Coverack. Entertaining fears for their safety, the steward, carpenter, and four seamen embarked in the small boat, and, together with the vessel, were hurled towards the coast. Getting between the wreck and the surf-beaten shore, the boat was swamped, and tlie receding waves hurled the unfortunate men against the side of the barque. Excepting Hatman Hansen, a sea- man, neither of the drowning men seemed sensible enough to clutch at the ropes thrown to them by their shipmates, the result being that their dead bodies were- soon being tossed to and fro by the waves. Hansen was rescued, and by this time the Coverack rocket appara- tus, in charge of Chief-officer Jeffer, was on the scene, and, with commendable alacrity, a line was thrown over the vessel, and by means of the breeches buoy thv survivors, who were hudcued together on the forecastle, were saved. So heavy wae the sea that in each instance it was feared the men would be washed out of the buoy. The saved are Cap- lain Simensen, Ha,ns G uf, ]J««naft Hansen, and Hans Arnesen (seamen). Sooa after the rescue the dead body of a handsome young fellow was washed ashore. Attempts to restore animat-on by Drs. Leverotn, Spry, and others proved ineffective. The remainder of the bodies were pla-inly to be seen Seating about in the thick seaweed, the arms, legs, and heads of the poor fellows being frequently observed, but the bodies could not be recovered owing to the vsolence of the waves, and they were subsequently washed out to sea. When the vessel struck ^he was stem-on. but gradually veered round to broadside. Swept con. tinuously by tremendous seas, she eoon com- menced to break up, the ehore being covered with wreckage. Two hours after striking she was bottomless, and the water was darkened for a considerable space by coal from the hold. Late on Tuesday evening no mere bodies had been recovered, and there was no prospect of the vessel, which was insured, being saved. Too much praise cannot be given to the gallaait coast guard.-in ern and members of the Life Saving brigade. Had the crew stuck to the vessel the probability is that none would have been drowned. In the course of an interview A. J 'ffers, the chief officer of the Coastguards stationed at Coverack, stated that the alarm of the wreck was raised in Coverack precisely at twenty minutes past seven. The brigade and coast- guards were at once summoned, and the life- gaving apparatus was placed on a wagon drawn by three horses. He was accompanied by Coastguards Wills, Carron, Mov-e. Guy, Ruther. Love. and Sum, whilst the brigade members included Messrs Roskiily, sen. and jun., CVews, Barken. Champion, Bastin, Boadene (two), Munday, Richards, and Corins (two). The distance to be traversed was five mdBS, over the roughest roads possible to imagine, eteep, zig- zag paths, strewn with huge boulders, having to be traversed at high tpeed. Despite these and orfher difficulties the party quickly arrived on the scene. By twentv minutes to nine all the r-urvivoii had been rescued. The line i, om the first rocket went wide, but the rest fell on the bowsprit of the ship, being made fast to the stock of the anchor. Hansen was the first saved, but. as there was great danger of his being dashed on the rocks, Wilis, Carron. Gqy. and Love, at great risk. waue-d into the raging surf and helped the unfortunate man s-everal times. It wa." thought the others on board were lost. so fuisous were the waves, but the men mentioned succeeded in pulling them ashore in an exhausted condition. Mr. Roe Lilly, ■member of the Helpoon District Council. 'M onoe rode to Coverack and prepared warm bedding, food, and clothing for the shipwrecked men. who spoke in thankful terms of his kind- mess and good nature.
