TRAGIC AFFAIR AT TENBY.
TRAGIC AFFAIR AT TENBY. ALDERMAN W. H. RICHARDS DIES ON HIS WAY TO CHUtRCH. A profound gloom has been cast over Tenby by the sudden death of Alderman VY. H. Richards, J.P., C.C.. of Croft House. The deceased gentleman, who vacated the mayoral eliair of the borough on Saturday, and was re- elected an alde-rnian for the borough on the same day, was on his way to the Town-liall to take part in the new mayor's procession to church shortly before eleven o'clock, and when opposite the Royad Gate House Hotel was observed to stagger and fall in the road. Close behind him at the time was Mr. J. Bancroft, her Majesty's inspector of schools, who imme- diately went 'to his assistance, and, with the help of others, conveyed him into the hotel and laid him in the coffee-room. Dr. D. A. lleid was immediately sent for, and was quickly :n attendance, but Mr. Richards expired in a few niiincat-es, his death beisig due to apoplexy. Meanwhile, in ignorance of what had occurred. the mayor's procession had hen formed and proceeded to ehuroh, but immediately before the service commenced the sad intelligence was made known. The town-clerk (Mr. C. W. R. Stokes) took Mrs. W. H. Richards, the de- pGhsed gentleman's wife, home. The news spread quookly throughout the town and created a paiinful and profound sensation. Mr. Richards had for the last 25 years taken a very pro- minent part, in public matters, and was one of Tenby's most respected citizens. At the con- elusion of the service, the choir filed out to the strain,? of the '"Dead March." in "Saul." The mayor's procession was not re-formed on emerging- from the church. Mr. Richards was the eldest son of the late Lieutenant-colonel Henry Richards, of the 3rd Bombay Light Infantry, h" was born in 184-4, and nmrried in 1872 Florence Antonia^ eldest daughter of Lieutenant-colonel Antony Stokes, of St. Botolph's. He was educatcd at Exete- College, Oxfoid, was a J.P. for Pembrokeshire, high-sheriff of Tenby 1858. mayor of Tenbv 1831-7 and 1895. He was president of The Tenby Conservative Association, P.M. of the Ten by Lodge of Freemasons, chairman of the Ten.bv Lifeboat Committee, a chirity trustee for Tenby. a county councillor for Tenby, and alderman of the borough. The funeral will take place on Wednesday next. i

Owing to some ambiguity in the words of a letter from Mr. Iselin to Mr. Smith, chairman of the cup committee, dated. September 16, my refusal to re-sail this race has led to thE erroneous sup- position that I declined to re-sail the whole series. Mr. Iselin made, I believe, a pro- posal at the New York Yacht Club to re-sail the series undier any conditions agreealbla to me; but this proposal was never communicated to me by Mr. Iselin or either of the com- mittee. I would have been more than g-lad to avail myself of it, with a reasonably oleax course a-sured." 1-i conclusion, Lord Dun- ra.ven difcusses the merits of i.Kc two yachts, and records his opinion that the D.-fender is ths better on a reach ard the Valkyrie in turn- ing to windward, while he has no doubt that the Valkyrie is the better on a run.
