MUSIC IN WALES.\
MUSIC IN WALES. THE FAILURE OF THE CARDIFF FESTIVAL. ilr. Joseph Bennett, writing to the "Daily Telegraph," says "As was clearly foreseen I by all who attended the Cardiff Festival, the balance-sheet shows a heavy loss, necessitating a call upon the guarantors of six shillings in the pound. While the meeting was in pro- gress I pointed out the causes of its weakness, and there is no need to repeat the process be- yond stating that local jealousy, the absten- tion. to a great extent, of the Welsh. and the indifference of the county families—who were ready enough to give their names, but no mere—had much to do with the untoward result. In this case, as in the corresponding instance at Bristol, one can only say that it is of no use to try to force a musical festival upon an unwill-ing community. The seed which I costs so much to procure and -sow had better -r be kept till the soil is fit to receive it. "The Cardiff Festival has now ceased to exist as such, and an attempt is being made to sub- stitute for it an enterprise having a- larger basis. This new scheme hop's to draw its resources from the whole of South Wales, and I gather that it will be, as it should be. dis- tinctively Welsh. A preliminary meeting, re- eertly held at Pontypridd, showed the native I element in strong force, with its hand on the helm or affairs. It wa<s resolved to hold the first 'South Wales Festival' at Cardiff in June next, the proceedings to occupy two days only, and tlie works performed to be 'Messiah' and 'Elijah.' But the choice of those familiar masterpieces was not undisputed. Speaker after speaker declared that a Welsh festival should encourage Welsh composers by com- missioning one of their number to write a.n oratorio, and it was understood that, after the 'I first meeting, this should be the rule. Sir Joseph Barnbv was appointed conductor, but there were, of course, some objections, one speaker urging the absurdity of the ide-a. that there were not conductors in Wales as good as any in England. The appointment of Six Joseph Barnbv, I imagine, does not extend beyond the first meeting, in which cose it is easy to divine tlie nationality of his successor. Nothing appears to have been said about a Welsh orchestra. "In ali this there is no reason for surprise, and no cause for blame. The Welsh are clearly entitled to have their own festivals, and, catering for themselves, to give them what character they please. Whether the new enterprise wdl lie treated as important on this side the border. and receive the attention given to festivals generally, is another question, about the answer to which, probably our neighbours do not greatly r-are."

------OLIVER CROMWELL'S HEAD.
OLIVER CROMWELL'S HEAD. NOW IN POSSESSION OF A SEVEN OAKS GENTLEMAN. It will probably surprise many people to hear that, in all probability, the head of Oliver Cram well is still above ground, u.vid that the features of stern old Noll may to-day be gazed at by the curious of the nineteenth cer.tury. The whole story, interesting as it is, may be read in the "Daily Chronicle" of edne-day, v here will also be found a ie-pro- duction of the mummified head, a careful copy of which we give, on a reduced r-cale. Th-e relic is in the possession of :1r. Horace Wil- kinson, a gentleman resident near Seven. Oaks, whose grandfather obtained -possession of it mrny years bade, and has left in MS. a full statement of the matter. It is known, of course, that on tlie restoration of Charles II. the bodies of Cromwell and others were dug up from their graves, and hanged on the gallows at Tyburn, and tha-t Cromwell s head was after- THE CROMWELL HEAD.

v.<rds fixed on a pike r.nd displayed at West- minster, where it remained for many years. Tradition states that one stormy night towards the end of the seventeenth century the head of Cromwell wps blown down. that it was taken possession of by a rentry, and that the latter kept it concealed till his death, when he divulged its whereabout.- to his family. The relic has had a chequered history (related by the "Chronicle"). which terminated in its acquisition by the grandfather of Mr. Horace Wilkinson before mentioned. The appearance of the head is understood to tally in a re- n.arkable dsegree with what we "know of the Protector, and the "Chronicle" hopes that a critical historical and scientific investigation will be set on foot. ?- '?-?--

JUVENILE SINGERS. UNITED SCHOOLS CONCERT AT CARDIFF. A concert was given at the Park-Iiail "on Wednesday evening by the united schools of St. John's Parish. The schools represented, with their instructors, were as follow; — Sr. John's Boy: Mr. E. Hemmings; St. John's Girls', Miss E. Harris: St. Johns Infants'. Mrs. E. South: Tredegarviile Boys Mr. C. Hardwicke Tredegarviile Girls', Miss L. Witt; Tredegarviile Infants', Miss C. Franklin St. Monica's Mixed. Mr. A. W. Swash; St. Monica's Infants'. Mrs. R. Wiil- mott. Mr. A. W. Swash acted as conductor, Misses Seville and Johnson as accompanists, whilst the onerous duties of secretary have bepn undertaken by Mr. C. Hardwicke. There was a crowded attendance, and many people were disappointed in being unable to gam admittance. The Rev. Canon Thompson, who briefly spoke at the commencement, re- ferred to thin new venture on the part of the schools of the parish of St. John's. Last year they had willingly helped at the united gathering of board schools and others; this year they had struck out for themselves, with Mr. Swash, of St. Monica's Mixed School, who actcd as conductor to the last year's concert refened to, at their head. On account of the exceptional attendance, the cgi c-ert would be repeated on Monday. The entertainment was a capital one. The children composing the choir were ranged on the plat- form. the girls being neatly dressed in white. The songs were excellently rendered, and the actioni songs by various detachments called forth hearty applause. The unique and dis- tinguishing features were the action song. "The Little Constables." by Tredegarviile boys. and the minstrel troupe of St. Monica's boys. Among other items on the programme were a duet by Masters Harry Griffiths and E. Bryant, several part songs, and drum and gar- land drill.

CARDI.FF WORKHOUSE.
CARDI.FF WORKHOUSE. As supplementary information to thr-1, published in our israe uf Wednesday with reference to the subject of extending the work- house accommodation of ti'e Cardiff Union, it may be stated that the sub-committee ap- pointed by the building committee will endeavour to obtain a site as near as possible to the Fly Schools of about three acres in extent, for the purpose of erecting temporary iron premises as suggested They will &1so endeavour, as soon a<: possible, to secure a site in a suitable situaticn (St. F-a can's was mentioned as a desir- able spot) of about twenty acres for the purpose of having it ready bv the time such land would be required for cottage homes and. if thought desirable, to utilise the pre- sent Elv Schools as a subsidiary workhouse. Mr. Bircham's idea. is that if it was decided to acquire the land, and if the land was not required immediately, it might be nultinted, and thus secure to the guardians a sum of money which thev would be able to lay out in another direction. ? _?-

The doy before vest- rcla.v Mr. Berieh Evans, on behalf of th<" National Welsh Liberal Fede- ration issued notices to the "seven men of Gotham" who are to represent the Cymru Fydd meeting at the "conference" to be held a* Shrewsbury to-day 'Thursday). On the same day and probably at the same time, the South Wales I.iberal Federation Executive met at Cardiff, and resolved that they would have nothing to do with Mr. Beriah Evans or the proposed conference. They further rejected the whole of Mr. Beriah Evans's amendments to the sug- gfsted constitution, and further resolved that the secretaryship to the national organisation, if it ever comes into existence, shall be hono- rary. This, the South Wales Federationists believe, effectually squelches "Beriah." believe, effectually squelches "Beriah."

IWife Murder and Suicide i
Wife Murder and Suicide A LUNATIC'S DESPERATE DEED. He Slew the Woman Who Prevented His Going to an Asylum and Then Hanged Himself. A double tragedy occurred two miles eaet of the village of Ashley- in America, on Satur- day, at nooo. Christopher Miller, aged 46, shot his wife twice in the head aind neok while she wjis preparing dinner. "Miller then rushed to the barn and hanged himself by an inch rope to a beam in the hav-loft. where his body wai cut down two hours afterwards by Sheriff Gordon. Miller was once an employe at the asylum for the feeble minded at Columbus for three years, where he met and married his wife, also an employe. The family and six children j resided on the 200-acre farm. Miller spared the life of a babe lying: in the cradle near the kitchen stove, when lie grasped its mother at the time of the shooting. The woman's bonnet ignited, and the blaze would have set fire to the house had it not been for another little davgliter falling upon it in an end;«avour to get out of the house to save her own life. About six weeks ago application was made for his transmission to the asylum, but through the pleadings of the wife the case was dismissed, since wrjeh time he had been hi Marion, until a few days ago, when he commenced cut- ting corn cn his farm, as he was supposed to be all right. Miller had his plans well calcu- lated- No one knew he had a revolver, or even since what has become of the weapon. '?' ?? J- '<?'<t!??-m!twM'-
CARDIFF FESTIVAL.
CARDIFF FESTIVAL. THE SECRET OF THE MEAGRE ATTENDANCE. Mr. David Jenkins, Mus.Bac.. writing in the "Cerddor" this month, say« — Much has been wnitten by way of critktiGm. and suggestion in reference to this festivaL And, although the committee have a!n adverse balance of £ 500 or J3600 to face, they are none the lesis deserving of the highest praise for their fidelity and self-sacr.fice lin providing for music-lovers generally such a sumptuous fare. In the first place, a pleasurable duty de- volves upon me persoTialIy to thanik them heartily for the opportunity given me of writing a new work expressly for this festival. for seeing to the thorough mastery of that work, and for affording ample time with chorus and orchestra- to secure a worthy representation of it. My thanks are also due to the numerous musicians of the Principality who. both by their presence and encomiums, testified to their appreciation of my efforis. Altogether I feel quite content t-hat fair play has been dealt to me, and thus a.m willing to quietly await results. It was almost a foregone conclusion to ex- pect the lash of the London "critics," for, like their compeers of old, They are strict believers in the adage that "no good thing can come out of Nazareth." It was a pleasant surprise, however, to find some (j: them adopting a mort" favourable tone. I confess to having felt some anxiety before rehearsing the work, bus after- wards was ready to leave the final issue to the judgment of time and experience. I trust, however, that I have done something "i godi'r hen wlad vn ci hoi," and sinoerely hope that other Welsh composers will have similar oppor- tunities afforded them in the near future. A feature of the festival w«,s t.he genuine desire of all the performers to do justioe to the work. Let the instrumentalists of Wales bear this fact in mind. Two months bai'-re the festival I received a letter from the leader of the orchestra asking for copies of the first violin part. Similar letters were received ircm the leaders of the other instruments. When it is remembered that these men are splendid "readers." it is very suggeistive of their anxiety to know and do their work thoroughly. bow different from the second and third rate players! It is impossible almost to get these to a rehearsal at all. And should there happen to be a misprint .n the notation they invariably add to their number by careless And slovenly execution. Some of the English papers grumbled that the Welsh peoplejs patronage of the festival was very meagre. This, however, as usual, cnlv serves to betray their ignorari.ee of Our country. The music lovers of V\ ales are very larg.- ly drawn from the artisan classes, but the j e-\ orbit ant prices charged for admission pre- cluded any possibility of their attenc^moa Anther paper suggests prejudice and bias as reason for their remissness in this respect, whereas, as n matter of I fact, the question was ertirely one of expense. How could it be ex- pected that tiie working classes would patronise the festival when the lowest admission, to one meeting was 5s.. not to mention the incidental expenses of tnavclling and We believe that it would pay the committee on another occasion to reduce- the prices all round. Above alL let the festival be continued as at present, for it is bound to leave an indelible impression of the highest kind On the country. We were sorry to see so few of our conductors present. If we remember rightly. they attend;^ in larger numbers three venrs ago. The orchestra in it«elf was worth going a long way to hear. Better readers could hardly be found anywhere They did not. however, seem to gam very much between the various rehearsals and the festival meetings proper, and in this respect may be mici to d/iffer from thoee of the Continent, who. without perhaps being so quick as the English players yet seem to have more finish in iheir work. An instance of this ivas the performance of M. Tirol's ora- torio. The rehearsals were qu'te as good as the performance itself. Some of the critice, by the way. were down on this w ork, but. in spite of their adverse opinions, there is more real worth in it than in many of the works so highly eulogised in the English festivals. We anticipate a time when our best choirs will unite in holding a two (iavgl festival, wben. two works by the great masters and two by Wels-h composers will be performed. It is evident that things are evolving in that direc- tion. There are features in Welsh music which must ultimately overcome the present ;nordi- nate prejudice of English critics. At present we are in the midst of the struggle—tflie dawn, is almost hreakinz. ard it is no small satisfac- tion to me to know that T was lately com- missioned on aTi important occasion to write a work in keeping with the genius of Welsh choirs. Possibly, some dav we shall be con- sidered worthy to write a similar work to meek the high level 'of the English choirs! Our besetting sin at present seemr to be our isola- tion. We are people bordering the Celtic fringe What ie important to know is the fa"t that, at last, we are a^sertinr our nationality in unmistakable fashion. Wo have begun to shake off our innate modesty, and are V-p-inniniT tn realise our own strength. As the Miast.er of Baihol RO truly said the other dRY in his ina gural address at the opening of the Wel-h I*niversity:—"If you don't believe in you? selves you will not easily get anyone elaa to believe in you."
