?-----??----LARGEST WEEKLY…
?-??- LARGEST WEEKLY PAPER IN WALES. TWELVE PAGES FOR ONE PENNY. By far the largest jpenny paper in Wales now is the "WEEKLY MAIL AND NEWS OF THE WEEK." Hitherto the issue has been in two separate papers, appealing to different tastes, but by amalgamating the two the proprietors are enabled to produce a paper which will not only cater for all classes, but will give far greater value for the money, for the price of the combined journal is only One Penny. The "WEEKLY MAIL AND NEWS OF THB WEEK CONTAINS Twelve Large Pages, with a total of Eighty-four Readable and Interesting Columns, and the whole represents the largest and fullest collection of news which can be obtained. The whole of the week's news and much besides of an interesting nature, including the best features of the two papers when issued separately, will be .found in the "WEEKLY MAIL AND NEWS OF THE WEEK," and as a record of Welsh and general news to read at the week end or to send to friends and rela- tives abroad it cannot be surpassed. Idriswyn's Three Columns of Welsh Notes form, of course, one of the chief attractions of this amalgamated issue of two old-establi'^ed and popular papers.

ELECTION ADDRESS. SPLOTT WARD ELECTION. 1895. LADIES and GENTLEMEN,- Having been in your midst for nearly twenty years as a large ratepayer, and knowing nearly all of you personally, I have pleasure in allowing my friends to nominate me for the vacancy caused by the retirement of (Councillor Shaekell. I have always taken a deep interest in the people of this ward, and I, therefore, make this appeal very con- fidently, believing that you will select one who lives amongst you, and whom you can always approach, in preference to one who is unknown to you, and who resides several miles outside of Cardiff. Should you do me the honour of electing me, it shall be my constant aim to act fairly and impar- tially for the benefit of the Splott Ward, which lias teen, much neglected as' compared to the well-to-do partsSjf the town. Hoping to be favoured by your cecfidcnce, I am, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant. CHAS. JENKINS. Committee-room, Railway-street, A SPECIAL VISIT TO CARDIFF. REV-IE. WELSH COAL TRADE.
WELSH COAL TRADE. STOPPAGES IN THE RHONNDA VALLEY. At Coedcae Colliery (Lewis's Merthyr), Rlbondda Vjalley, only eight "turns" were worked during the last fortnight, and there was a notice placed in the office window on Saturday that there will be no work to-day (Monday). But there is every reason to believe that this state of things is exceptional and temporary. The Eastern Pit of the Ocean Coal Company is still idle, owing to the difficulty which was found in arranging a list of prices upon opening out the new seam. That keeps about 800 men out of work. Unfortunately, in the same neighbourhood, the men working in one sea-m of the Maindy Colliery of the same company will soon have to oease operations, and about 400 will, consequently, be thrown out of work. The cause of the stoppage is that the seam, has for some time been worked unprofitably. The collieries of the Glamorgan Colliery Company at Llwvnypia were idle on Saturday, and the cause is stated to be due to "jutop-wagona." Operations will, however. be resumed to-day (Monday). Although matters look a little black just now, an early revival in the coal trade is anticipated. COAL WINNING AT LLAN. GENNBOH. The Four-foot Vein was reached on Friday in the new pits whiuh Messrs. Thomas Williams and Sons are sinking at Llangennech. Ihe coal was struck at 106 yards, and it U of splendid quality.

The ques- lion to be .••,rgucd is whether the Union Bank </as bailee of the property, rnd whether it wae a part of its business, in consideration of Mrs. Langtry having an account with it, to keep her jewels in safe custody, or whether the bank ivai a gratuitous bailee, in which latter catee the further question would be raised whether its .u officials wer6 guilty of gross negligence in de- livering up tho jewels on a forged order.

There are some hundreds of members, and those stood in groups on the sides of the street for some time after the entry. A great deal of comment was excited by reason of the fact that the police search proved futile, and tue opinion was freely expressed that the authori- ties had made 9, mistake. PROTEST BY CONSERVATIVES ALLEGED SWEATING IN ROYAL DOCKYARDS. At a meeting of the Chatham Conservative Working Men's Association the following resolution was carried unanimously:—"That this meeting of the borough of Chatham Con- servative Working Men's Association hereby iDvotest against the system. of sweating at pre- sent carried on in her Majesty's dockyards in the form or task and piece work, check and test measurement, it having been no uncommon occurrence of late for men of all classes employed in the chief constructor's department to be checked; that is, to have deducted one-half of their standing wage under the existing scheme of prices paid for their work. And this meeting calls upon the Uords of the Admiralty to rescind this gross injustice to their employes."—A second resolution directed the secretary to send copies of the above resolution to Mr. Goschen, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Mr. Alderman Davies, the member for the borough, and that the hon. gentleman be informed, that it is now a weekly oexsurrence for men to go round for a collection to make up fellow-workmen's wages to take home to their wives and families in consequence of such deductions.

A meeting of Roath Conservatives was held on Saturday evening to select a candidate to contest the ward against Councillor Ramsdale. Mr. J. B.Terrier, who has been suffering from ill-health during the last few days, wrote that he felt be could not in hio present state undergo the. exertions of :0 municipal contest, and, therefore, asked <he ward officials to select another candidate. There was a strong opinion, however, that, if Mr. Ferrier would -tjlovr hioiseu! to be. ixominsted he would secure tr. easy victory, and an effort will b« made to induce him to rt-consider his decision- If Mr. Ferrier's services cannot be obtained, however, there is 2, strong feeling that Mr. C. H. Downea, barrister-at-law, should be invited to contest the ward in the Conservative interest. Mr. Downes, it will be remembered, rendered valuable services to Mr. Maclean and tho Con- servative party dcring the gCTveral election, Ofnà his apeeehes throughcoit tie campaign pro- duced an excellent impression. Sir,—It is iim* something definite should be done in this ward. At the present time Mie Conservative leaders seem more oonje-i'w' in running a.ftc impossible candidates than in securing opposition for the retiring member. High appreciation was expressed of the valuable services^ rendered by Mr- Johnston to the ward, and all present pledged themselves to do their utmost to secure his return in the event of • oonte«t. SPLOTT WARD. In Splot; it is still uncertain whether Mr. Chappell will enter the field, and in the present uncertain state of affairs some of the Radical leaders we showing considerable anxiety and <.re using every means at their command to induce Mr. Chappell to retire at once, in order that Mr. Sidney Robinson may have some sort of a chance in the fight. But, as Mr. Chappell has i goftd deal of influence in the ward, this may not work. AN IDIOTIC RESOLUTION. We publish the following resolution as an example of how partisanship blinds all reason and esrusiies common-sense. If there is one man in Cardiff to whom everybody who pays rates and everybody who may benefit by tech- nical education, owos a debt, of gratitude, it is Councillor Riches. 'Chis is well known, and in times of calmness anyone but the blindest political partisan will admit that it would be a calamity to lose the public services of Mr. Riches. Yet Mr. E. Jones, the secretary of Branch 57 of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Reks rs to publich the following pa.ragrapli At a summoned meeting of the fifty-seventh Branch of Amalgamated Society of Engineers, held at the. Splotlands Inn, on October 12, it was unanimously resolved "That, in the opinion of the members of t.ho above branch, seeing that Mr. Riches Is using the influence of his position on the Cardiff County Council in support- of the endeavour of the Taff Vale Railway Company to enforce piecework on unknown tc nits: 9.1so refusing to recogivine the right, of labour to combine for protection, the strike and district com- mitters of thr Am ilgainat<-d Society of Eneiueers he urged to oppose his return to the council at) fci-lt.corning municipal ejections." The silliness of the suggestion that a sarvant should be made respemsible for the action of his employers is only surpassed by ib" state- ment that somebody is enforcing piecework on unknown terms when no real effort has been made to glean what those terms are, while both, statements pale to unimportance by the side of the allegation that Mr. Riches is some- how using his position as a town councillor to interfere with the relations between the Taff Vale Railway Company and its men. Thi* is worse then absurd—it is idiotic.
: A Woman's Confession
A Woman's Confession 0 ■ MAY CLEAR UP A SERIES ØE MURDERS. She Says She was the Eye-witnosflC of Crimes which for Long have Baffled the Police. A big sensation has been created in Brad- ford, America, by the publication of an alleged confession of a domestic, named Maggie Case, in the employ of Daniel Ingesrsol, a farmer, re- siding about four miles west of the town. The woman tells a startling story, which, if true, goes a great way in clearing up several mys- terious murders committed in this vicinity in the past six or seven years. Ingersol had a man rained George Birchfield in his employ ladfe May, who robbed him of JE20 and fled the county. Mr. Ingersol was relating the story of the robbery to Miss Case, and after hear- ing the story it is claimed she declared the name of Birchfielel was an assumed one, and that she knew the man, and that he was guilty of seveial murders to which ehe was a witness. She refused to give the name of the man, fear- ing she would meeib the same fate as his other victims had. Six years ago the woman claims to have been an eye-witness to the murder of a, young man whose name she gave as Ed Youngs. She- was with the man whom she claims com- mitted the crime. Youngs, she alleges, was riding in a trap with herself and Youngs's assailant. While driving along a lonely road early in the evening, her com- panion struck Youngs with a sandbag and killed him. Youngs was robbed of a large amount of money, but, to remove suspicion of foul play, his watch and a considerable amount of money were left on his body, which was thrown into the deep snow. His body, she says, was taken to Emporium, and an inqueet held, at which his death was attributed to freezing. About a year afterward the alleged murderer of Youngs decoyed a. German lad, who was supposed to have, and who did possess, considerable money, to a secluded spot, about five miles from Coudersport, where he, too. was murdered and his body buried. The next Victim, it is claimed, was a middle-aged man, .whom Birchfield met on the road. He was shot and robbed, and his lxjdv thrown on t-he railroad track. The crime was undetected, and the body cut in many pieces by a passing train. A fourteen-year-oldgirl was another victim in Jlie series of crimes. This crime was covered up by bribing a disreputable physician to con- J ceal the real cause of death. The authorities liave been working on the ca&e since last August, and a. close watch is being kept on the woman. The confession came as a complete surprise, as no suspicion was attached to the woman. It is very evident the woman has been labouring under great mental strain, and ss wil- ling to tell all when assured that 1W harm will come to her. Physicians declare the woman is sftne. and the story is generally believed as truthful.
