TREASURY PROSECUTION.
TREASURY PROSECUTION. ALLEGED FOttGERY BY A CWM- BRAN SCHOOLMASTER. At a special sitting of the Pontypool Petty Sessions on Wednesday Mr. Richard Evans, aged 43, until recently head schoolmaster of the Upper CVmbran Boa-rd Schools, a,p- peared on bail, after being remanded on the previous Friday, charged, on a warrant, with forging an acquittance and receipt for UlU 4s. 4d. on November 5 at the schools. A great deal of local inte-rest was aroused in the proceedings, the accused having been a prominent Liberal organiser in the district for many years past. Mr. A. A. Williams was the presiding magistrate, and the other justices on the bench were Colonel Hair and Mr. T. H. Deakin. Mr. Watkins, solicitor, Pontypool, appeared to prosecute on beliadf of the Treasury Mr. W. Lyndon Moore, solici- tor, Newport, appeared for the defence.—Mr. Wat-kins explained that as lie had only re- ceived his instructions from the Treasury on Tuesday, he proposed now only to submit such evidence as would justify a further re- mand until Saturday. The prisoner was until recently schoolmaster at Upper Cwm- bran, and amongst his duties he had to receive money and pay sums for certain goods for scholastic purposes. In November of last year lie presented an invoice of certain goods to the board. The invoice was passed by the managers, and the school board was authorised to pay the amount. An order was made upon the treasurer, Mr. D. E. Howell, and a sum of £ 10 4s. 4d. was handed to the defendant to discharge the account. A receipt purporting to be in the name of Mr. W. H. Foxon, the 'oeal collector and traveller of the Scholastic Trading Company. was presented, but he would call Mr. Foxon, who would prove that he did not receive the money or sign the receipt, av! he would also call Mr. Howe'l to say that Lc had received the receipt from the prisoner purporting to be a receipt of Mr. Foxon.-1fr. Moore made an appeal to Mr. Watkins to finish the case so far as he was concerned that day.—Ultimately it was decided to go on as far as possible that day. —Mr. W. H. B. Rythway. acting clerk to the Llanfreehfa Upper School Board, spoke to two accounts of;610 4s. 4d. and £ 3 2s. bavin? been passed by the school board and sent for payment. The account for P,10 4s. 4d. pro- duced, was in the handwriting of the defen- dant. and so also was the form of receipt. -Examined by Mr. Mo-ore Who is prose- cuting in this case, Mr. Bythwav?—Mr. Bvth- way: I understand that it is the Treasury. Mr. Howell ;aid the information. Mr. Howe!] came up to Pontypool about it when I wrote to him at the suggestion of the superintendent of police.—Mr. Moore: Is Mr. Howell an un- willing witness?—Mr. Eytlnvay I oanuot I say that.—In further cross-examination, witness *aid the defendant had been master of the school for a good many years, and had earned fairly good grants.—David Evan Howell, the late treasurer to the managers of the Cwmbran Upper School, stated that, strictly, he was supposed to pay the accounts himself, but he handed the monev over to the prisoner. Witness paid him £ 10 4s. 4d. in December last. and wrote to the defendant to let him have the voucher.—Willian Henrv Foxon. traveller for the Cardiff branch .;r the Scholastic Trading Company, swore that the invoice and the receipt were not in hi, handwriting, but that of the Accused.—Mr. •Joserth r-f"Tirv Dyer, manager of the Scho'asti^ Trading Company's Cardiff branch, said no invoice for £ 10 4s. 4d. had been rendered Vc his firm to the school board. Thev received on December 14. 1894, a sum of B8, and on March 1, 1895. a sum of £ 7, which was the last they had received.—Police-superintend?nt James and Police-constable Jones proved the arrest.—This closed the evidrece upon the first «>«<?. and Mr. WatHns said he would give evidence on a second case—an amount .,f £ 3 --and afterwards a third charge wou \1 be nrp^erred. but he would ask for a remand until Saturday in that case and there misrht be further instructions from the Treasury.— D-t.dant was remanded till Saturday, on bail. NO SETTLEMENT YET.
NO SETTLEMENT YET. THE SOCIETY BREACH O PRO- MISE CASE. The London correspondent of the ''Western Daily Mercury" says :-1 have the best autho- rity for the statement that up to the present moment no definite offer has bten made on the pan of the defendant in the bre ch of promise cn-e of Watkin- v. Marjoribanks to settle it out of court. It is possible that Miss Watkins. better known at the music-halls as "Birdie" Sut'i- rland, may not have to claim from a sym- pathetic special jury in the Queen's Ben eh drmages foe' the wrong which .he says l.as been inflicted upon her by the Hon. Dudley Marjoribanks's refusal to fulfil his alleged pro- mise to marry her; but, so f r. the case is pro- ceeding as usual. Sir Edward Clarke, Q.C., .P.. ha* been retailed for the plaintiff: Mr. Asquith. Q.C.. M.P., for the defendant. Some informal have been- opened through the medium of a mutual friend of the parties to the dispute. It was. in fart, sug- gested on b half of the defendant that the case was susceptible of settlement on certain terms, which proved to be altogether unsatisfactory. Indirect negotiations were thus fouind to be fruitless. The case is not yet set down in the three weeks' list, and is not likely to be heard before Christmas—if at all. --?-

Saved by His Bicvcie o
Saved by His Bicvcie o rASTOR ATTACKED BY HIGH- WAYMEN. Threw a Rail in Front of Him, but He Jumped, Clesred the Obstacle. and Then Made a Flying Start. There was a flying apparition the other night on the country road between Hunting- ton and West Neck, Long Island, in America. It was e gentleman in clerical garb, who was mounted on a bicycle and making the pedals move up and down as if his very life depended upon it. He seemed to move on the wind, and those who saw him pass remarked that his fece was pale, and some even feared that it was death itself which was riding cross-country on a wheel. The pale rider was the R-ev. B. U. Putnam, the tiastor o: ibe Presbyterian Church at Huntington. He was returning fiom an errand of mercy to the deathbed of one of the members of bis congregation, when he was waylaid by highwaymen. He escaped from the gang, which lay in ambush for him, thanks to his expertness on a bicycle, and rode away faster than the outlaws could follow. A message had come to the pastor calling him to the deathbed of -i dearly beloved friend and member of his church. The way was dark and lonesome, but the devoted pastor did not flinch from what lie considered his duty. It would take too long to get a Lvery rig. so lie ran around to the parsonage, mounted his wheel, and was off. The run was made in good tune. His sad duty done, he started for home. Just as he entered a dark and lonely stretch oi road some men conceded in the bushco tbrew a heavy fence rsil in trout of h-ui. He saw the obstruction and jumped, fortunately saving both himself and his wheel. Before he had time xo recover from 11': 6umrise four men advanced towards him. Realising that they were highwaymen, he pushed his wheel acrosr. the obstruction, and, j-ist ac diey were about to grab him, made a flying mount and was off. Ee could heat them running after him and cursing their iÚ lue: by-- he cuiy made the pedals move the faster. The peripiracica ctood out on the good dominie's brow, and ib.e lace continued for severa-i hundred ya-ds. Then the highwaymen gave up the pursuit, but the clergyman tarried not, nor siopped to rest. On to Huntington he sped, putting all his strength into the effort to mike epeed: faster he fletv and, fmaliv, the welcome lights of (he village shone out, and he dismountec. in Lout of the parsonage, out of biss-ta and much ex.* hausteii. -?-?-?
,SPEECH BY LORD TREDEGAR
SPEECH BY LORD TREDEGAR MISSIONARY EXHIBITION AT NEW i: CArte. The Missionary Loan Exhibition at Newport was opened on Wednesday by Lord Tredegar, who was supported by a large number of in- fluential gentlemen from the town and county. -Lord Tredegar, who was cordially received, said that at one time he was of opinion that there were sufficient heathens at home without paying attention to those abroad., but informa- tion was brought to his nonce 111 regard to the women in the zenanas of India that made him realise the great necessity there was for foreign mission work and increased his interest in it. Max O'Rell, the famous French author, had in his cynical way given a slap at the English for their missionary work. He said that Eng- lishmen went into a heathen country with the Bible in their hands, and the result wa.s the heathen got the Bible and the Englishmen the country. (Laughter.) He ventured to asseit that that was an overdrawn picture, and he contended that Max O'Rell, in spite of himself, had paid a compliment to the English when he said that they loved their Bible, their country, aDd their missionary work. He hoped much real good would result from that most interest- ing exhibition, and that "he wnk of the Church MÏssionary and other societies would prosper exceedingly. (Applause.)—On the motion of Mr. S. 0. Bosanquet, seconded by Colonel Wall is. a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to his lordship for opening the exhibition, and, his lordship having briefly replied, the company dispersed to view the different courts and inspect the curios. -?
THE MARQUIS DE XAYYE
THE MARQUIS DE XAYYE CHARGED WITH CRUELTY TO HIS WIFE. A Renter's telegram from St. Amand en Wednesday says:—The Marquis de Nayve, n 110 was acquitted in the assize-court at Bourges recently on a charge of murdering his wife s ill eg tirnate son ten years ap-o, appeared at the police-court here to-day to answer a charge of ill-treating his wife 'and children.— The marquise was the first witness, and stated that her husband had been guilty- of the g-rossest cruelty to herself and children during the years 1892-93. thrashing his sons with a ramrod, striking herself with his fists, and threatening to kill them all and then take his own life. Oiif, dav. when she ran t-o tlio 1 assistance of one of the boys, the marquie seized her by the throat and nearly strangled her. He was accustomed to suit in her face, and used to make frightful scenes in order to compel her to make her will in his favour.— Asked by the President to explain the contra- dictions in the story told by her sons before the examining magistrate and their statements now, the marquise replied that at the time they were examined bv the magistrate- they detested their father. S nee then they thought only of themselves, and wanted to save their father and their own honour. (Sensation.) —Several servants from the Chateau de Presles corroborated the statements of the mamnise. One of them admitted, under crose-pxF.ini'nation, that she had seen the marqui.se shut up for a long time with the AW* Ro,<*>?ot ;n one of the rooms of the castle.—Vanou- witnesses were called for the defence to T>ro-e that no acts of cruelty had taken place.—Henri de Nayve, the prisoner's son, was keerilv Questioned 1: the president, but, while admitting that he had soimermes been struck by his father, he declared tbat 1W deserved the rem;shment. If he deposed to the contrary before the examining magistrate it was at the instigation of the Abbe Rosselot.
