LOCAL AX USE ML E NTS. A TRIP TO CHINATOWN AT THE ROYAL. The successful musical comedy, "A Trip to Chinatown" (a detailed description of w-luch has already appeared in these columns), wiii he produced to-n^ht (Monday) and each evening during the vreek at the Theatre P.oysi, Car- diff. "A Trip to ChinatQwn" bas been, u is well known, the hit of the London tea-son. It affords a bright, merry, and intensely funny evenings entertainment, and th-e cast a strong combination of well-known oomedia.ua and burlesque artistes. The original scenery, dresses, kc-, will be brought from Toole's and the Strand Theatres, and the entire performance will be identical in every detail with the recent London representations, GRAND THEATRE. One of the prettiest dramas upon the Englk-h stage will be presented this week at the Grand Theatre, Cardiff. M. Auguste Van Bier.e, the actor-musician, will take his original character Theatre, Cardiff. M. Auguste Van Bier-e, the actor-musician, will take his original character in "The Broken Melody." The sc-nsation produced on the occasion of his last visit to Cardiff was such that the Grand will sure to be thronged each evening in the week. It may he remembered that the 'cello playing of M. August-e Van Biene tdien he was last in Cardiff brought tears to the eyes of many "ho heard Ü. As a, histrionic piece, even without its musical accompaniments, "The Broken Melody" could not fail to command success; but with such music added, no wonder it has for so long drawn such large and enthusiastic audience?. On December 2 M. Augusts Van Biene will t'i' the Swansea New Theatre and ttar Opera House- THE EMPIRES. CARDIFF. A very full and « very diversified pro- gramme has been issued for the local Empire. This week a great attraction w:ll be the singing of eight Welshmen, late of the P.&ondda Glee I Society, who commence nn important, engage- ment shortly in London. Me^rs. Donald- Bon Brothers and Ardell will give funny sketches from the Zoo and the entertainment will be one of the funniest that -has been witnessed lately at the I Empire. The Indian Princrss, Nala Dama- janti, from the Palace Theatre, London, will go through a wonderfully se national perfor- mance with the giant serpents. The oih-or artistes are Mr. Arthur Reeoe (character come- dian), Wood and Beasley fcomedv vocaljstc), Ada Dell (songstress and dancer), Wtiter King (comedian), and Miss Jessie Prince (comedy songstress). NEWPORT. A varied rrrograjntne has been issued for t.hs present week at Mr. Oswald StoTs popular present week at Mr. Oswald StoTs popular hall at Newport. This (Mondavi evening, to morrow (Tuesday), and Wednesday tb« artistes will include the original T:i'er TVou.pe, from the Palace Theatre. London; Professor Win- gard, the whimsical wisard; Mr. Fred }::?"- rington, Dutch comed an the Sisters !'Taple, duettists; T. W. Darling, tenor vocalist; :1\J, and Mrs. Sam Lucas, Ethiopian entertainers; Rose Elliott and P. Bentley. in an Anglo- American act and the eccentric cnr Pyb.nd, For the last thrfe nights in the week the iv.'O- gramme will be entirely changed. SWANSEA. Visitors at the Swansea Empire wi11, doubt- less, show- their appreciation of the pleasurable and nurth-provoicing series of entertainments arranged for the current week. The aretes include Mr. Edyrin Ronie. a most popular artiste; the Clavton Twins, and the Messrs. Wood and Willis. in their original sketches; Mr. Charles Seel, the quaintest of comedians, and others, each of whom is also a host in himself. I THE PANOPTICON. One of the principal features at the Card-flf Panopticon is now the crystal maze. Pre- viouslv it was nn ordinary puzzle ground, but a complete transformation has row taken place, and it has become a veritable palace of de- light. The old sombre black pillars have given place to festooned pillars of gold, and the maze, is now briHiantlv illuminated with electric light. As the visitor enters a scene of dnz~lmg splendour me-t- his gaze, a.nd, t-pon reaching the centre of the maze, he sees around him myriads of electrio lights and prismatic colours and gold. It is impossible to describe the wonderfully charming effect which thp.c:e coloured Hpht". floral festoons, pnd glided pillars, re-produced indefinitely bv the cunningly-arranged mirrors, produce upon the eye. It is a vision of splendour and brilliance, redolent of the "Arabian Nights, and no visitor to the Panopticon should miss the f-ipht. The transformation has be^n effected at considerable exp nse, but we feel assured that the maze, in its new guise, will prove so successful that it will recoup Mr. ftoll for the money he has expended in im- proving it. For the present week a srfxong variety company has been engaged. am. SNAZELLE AT CARDIFF. Mr. Snazelie is in unioue entertainer, and na S-mday night, sA th: P.1no;;tÍCOll, Cardiff he kept a crowded audience entranced with dt'ight at his beautiful and refined entertain- ment..Music, song, story, a.nd travels fp;c- torially jllustrsted), all were combined, but. the greatest attraction was Lord Tennvson's "Enoch Arden." illustrated by 30 tableaux I 'c from lif/' models. Throughout the audience 'e.r was spellbound. On S indriy nighf next Mr. Snivel le will giv«! an equally beautiful, but entirely different, selection. ROSENTHAL'S VISIT TO CARDIFF Memories of Paderewski have not yet jxissed from the minds of the Cardiff music- Itvving public, c-Tid the faci that h;)s Tival, Herr Ro-cnfr hail, who had the temerity upon his arrival in London 'to folhxw immediately in th. footstens of the Pole, with identical selections, thereby forcing com- parison. is visiting the Park-hull, Cardiff, to- night. (Monday), will be sure to call together 8 large s»d critical gathering. The Lemberg pianist, ha-s. of course, long been favourably known here, if only by report, for England is one of the last countries to be visiter! by him. Like so many more of his class, Herr "Rosenthal played in public at a very early age. When but ten he made his tirst appe-ra.noe in the capacity of executant, and at fourteen had already- given a highly successful concert in Vienna. After studying under Joseffy. Liszt, and others, he oame out again in 1882. and from that time has been prominently before th? public. In Austria, Germany, pnd America (where in 1883 he gave npv.'uds c-L a hui.tired rec.'tyls). Herr Posenthal kw atta-'n«d c notoriety, and the uHimate dis- play of his powers in this country, a few months ago, -esuited in a confirmation of a.ll that- had been ascribed to hiai. ITêoTT Pi'^onflntl's d'spiav is said io be phenomenal, arid, aceordi,ng to aoc-ounts, he rourt possess much of Fubenste-n's leonine strength and exactitude of touch. TIN-PLATE TEA CHESTS-
TIN-PLATE TEA CHESTS- ARRIVAL OF A CONSIGNMENT AT SWANSEA. Councillor James Jones, the well-known ■wholesale r-r^cer, of Goat-street, Swansea, has just rece: d a large consignment of Indian tea, packed neatly and securely in large tin- plate chests, oach holding one cwt. The tea, has been received in a perfect condition, which was not always the case with the old wooden chests. The top and bottom of the chests are of wood, but the four sides are made of on* strong piece of tin, capable of standing any amount of rough usage. If this mode of pack- ing were universally adopted, the market for local tin-plates would possibly become as brisk as ever. The chests Mr. Jones has received all contain one cwt.. but be sees no reason why smaller quantities of 501b. and 601b., and even less, could not be similarly packed with advan- tage. As president of the Swansea Grocers' Association, Mr. Jones intends to bring the matter forward at the next meeting, and to recommend to all grocers in Swansea and W ales in particular, and in the country gene- rally, what he considers to be the packing of the future.

Saw Her Lover's Body, GHASTLY FIND K.VOE BY MISS ALMA CfiOI CH. Something of a Mystery, but "he Girl's Father is Suspected of the Murder. Miss Alma Crouch, the seventeen year old daughter of William O. Crouch, a prominent county farmer, in Kentucky, was walking in her father's orchard wher she suddenly struck her f(-et against the body of a dead man lying in the high weeds, and fell over it, She was struck with horror when she recognised the face as that of her lover, Doc Ellii:gtc:i. A few days ago Ellington had a difficulty with her father and th; old geutltman had ordered him off the premises, and in-t to oome to gee his daughter again. They met ihe next day, when Ellington was talking across the fence to Miss Alma. The girl's, father attempted violence to the boy, and he drew his pistol and fired at the old gentelman, the bullet strik- ing him in the leg. He was put to bed and is thought not to have been out of his room since. The body of the young man showed that life had been cxtinc; for some time. Both eyes v/ere blown out, the killing having beeti done with a double-barrelled shot-gun. Fully forty shot had lodged in his face and head. There was no gun near. thus disposing of the theory of suicide. The sheriff visited the som.e. but no arrests were made. Crouch is in his bid, and his family •say he has not moved from Irs room since the shooting a few days ago, which has been kept quiet. Miss Alma. will not talk. She fainted after a series of sceanu:, caused by her fright, and vi- picked jp by some of the farm hands and taken to the he use. The neighbours believe come of the boys working on Crouch's place arc implicated in the killing, but since these proved to the satisfaction of the sheriff tha'1 ihey had not been on the farm for a week he did not arrest any one of them. ? .1'" -? -?
