I XOVia EXHIBITION |
XOVia EXHIBITION | OPENED AT NEWPORT BY TEE BISHOP OF LLANDAFF. A very interesting and instructive loan ex- hibition of objects curious and rare ivas opened at the Drill-hall, Stow-hill, Newport, on Tues- day afternoon by the Lord Bishop of Llandaff. It was promoted by the Church Missionary Society, the Church of England Zenana Mis- sionary Society, and the Missionary Leases Association, in order to arouse in Netvport, as in other parts of the country where similar work ¡ has been taken up, a deeper interest in foreign missions. The exhibition was arranged in courts, representing Africa, India, North-west America, Palestine, China, Japan, and New- Zealand. In addition to these, where objects of interest were displayed from each of the countries named, there were lectures bv re- turned missionaries, exhibitions in the zenana, a bookstall for missionary literature, and lantern illustrations and occasional concerts, besides, of course, refre-Hiinent-stails. There ) wais a large attendance of clergy aud laity for the inauguration of the exhibition by the Bisihop of Llanda.fi on Tuesday afternoon.— Cajitai-n Travers (t-hp hon. secretary to the exe- cutive committee) explained the aims and motives of the promoters of the exhibit-ion. —The Lord Bis'hop of Liandtiff said he estet-nied it a great privilege to open an ex-! hibition promoted by societies which gave to Church people the opportunity of assisting in t ile tX' du.cu ox the iswi, ana the greatest of I the Saviour's commissions—to go into all the t world and preach the Gospel to every creature, There was a greater interest in missions felt in England now than ever, and Vrt, coinpara- lively speaking, the work was very miserably and inadequately done.—A vote of thanks was) accorded to the bishop, cn the motion of the I Archdeacon of Monmouth, seconded by Mr. H. J. Davis.—Various chatty and descriptive lectures were afterwards given in the var olis T. Jays (missionary from Abeo- kuta) spoke in the West African Court-; the Rev. J. Hawks-ley (missionary from the Mackenzie River) in the North-west American Court; the Rev. J. Neule (missionary from South China) iu the China Court; Mr. C. F. Binns in the East African Court Mrs. R. Greaves gave lantern lectures on zenana work in India; Miss K. Sachs (missionary from Jeru- salem) spoke in the Palestine Court; the Rev. LI. Thomas, vicar of Aberpevgwm, and Miss Parher. of Tokio, in the .JaP1'l\ Court, and illustrations of life in a Tamil mission school in South India wore arranged by Miss Vines, missionary from Mengnanapura-m. The exhi- bition will be opened to-day (Wednesday) by Lord Tredegar, and it will also remain opeui on Thursday and Friday. Our Lady Correspondent visited the exhibi- tion on Tuesday, and writes of it: — A re- markably pleasant and profitable afternoon was spent in examining the vast number of curious and illustrative articles collected to- gether. The Drill-hall was ,ery prettily deco- rated. with quaint hangings of Japanese and Chinese embroidery. Some were most elabo- rate and rich, and reminded us of the trea- sures displayed by "Liberty" upstairs one end of the gallery is cut off for a tea room, which in arrangements, furnishing-, &"c., is exactly copied from a Japanese tea-room. Here half a dozen pr&tty young girls waited on us dressed in bona fide Japanese costumes, and presided over by Miss Alice Parker, herself a missionary to the Japan^e, in Jaj>anese costume, and by her tea was made precisely as in the land of the chrysanthe- mum. "Will you have Japanese tea?' she asked. "Let me know what it is like?" "It is very weak green tea, at 4s. a pound, and you take it without milk or sugar." "Thanks, awfully, but we prefer a good cup of English at Is. 7d., and plenty of cream, which was also served there. However, from the popu- larity of the Japanese tea-room, it was quite evident that others were not of our insular and (prejudiced opinion, for customers flocked thither in crowds. At the further end, above the plat- form, is possibly the most interesting exhibit to women-It large model of a Zenana, in which are figures of native women, in the dresses each wear, engaged in their daily avoca- tion there. A lady, who herself had worked among the Zenanas, was kindly explaining everything—the native bed, of a raised tiat board, just covered with a blanket; the bowl in which the portion of rice, &c.. was llung formerly as a gtift to the idols, now civen to the Church the widow crouching outside grind- ing the corn, and not considered fit to asso- ciate with the women inside, her widow.hocd being accounted to her a crime. This was a most interesting part of the exhibition. At intervals a missionary from each countrv would mount a chair of that part of tihe room con- taining the curious of -tlie country, and give a very interesting lecture for a quarter of an hour. In the Chinese Court the Rev. A. Neale. dressed in Chinese costume, was showing the shoes with which the cruelly-bardnged fe--t of the Chmese ladv is forced, :11\r1 he remarked to the ladies around him, "Ti-ey have not large feet, like yours." (Apiitause, whereat he blushed to the very tip of his pigtail). West Africa seemed to furnish more idols than any other country. In Ea«t and Central Africa the heithen hnve no idols, only a belief in spirits—b:'d one-; c11iEltb-. We were shown many of the idols and charms for warding off diseases, and one of tli, most loeallv intern-t- ine relics was the well-used, shabby, black blotting book used bv the late beloved Bishop Smythies. Here also is Bishop Haiinin.g- ton's last diary, under glass, open at th" last entiy—n. tad relic. In a side room a sale of work was carried on bv ladies, who presided at prettily-decorated and well-filled stalls, and at three p.m. and eight p.m. very enjoyable concerts were given upstairs. It would take many hours to examine ench exhibit and gain therefrom a keener insight and interest in niis-ionary life and all its trials, privations, new experiences, &c.. and the nublic ought to be everlastingly indebted to the energy that started this exhibition and so care- fully and oleverly arranged it. and those who do not visit it during the next three days will lose a unique and, possibly. the only opportunity of seeing such an interest- ing collection. We noticed very few Cardiff people, and only three or four clergymen from Cardiff among the v. ry large number of reverends about the hall—Canon Thompson (whose kindly sympathy seems to embrace all that is broiurht to his notice), the Revs. J. Ward and Chadwick (of St. Mary's). Canon Allen, and a young missionary (the H. Gerrish), whose home is in Cardiff, and who has iust returned from Central Africa on siolc leave, and from him we learned much that was interesting. -?
GREAT SILYEIl BOiiBEBY.I
GREAT SILYEIl BOiiBEBY. ALLEGED IDENTITY 077 THE PRISONER "GRA Y." The "Sun" of Tuesday night says:—That wonderfully dramatic narrative which JDeU-c- tive-sergeant Harris told the other day about the capture of Gray and Barrett lacked two or three resting detail*. He made it quite clear that he got the thirteen ftoien in- gots safely enough, that he also trapped his two pn-oners safly enough, and that he neither had to part with any of his £ 1.6J0 nor r-se the loaded revolver which he carried in his jacket pocket. But Sergeant Harris did not say what became of the £ 1.000 that lie saw in Barrett's possession, nor did he solve the ranterv that so fa.r has surrounded the identity of Gray. Around these two points lie romances ev-ry bit as remarkable as the, story of the capture it is a pity for them not to be added to what ha., already proved itself one of the most sensational robberies ever effected. Now, what is the true story of "Gray" and Bi-irett's connection with the stolen silver? There are two versions. The onlv thing that is believed to be beyond doubt is that, however thev came to be mix a up with it afterwards, they had nothing whatever to do with the robbery itself. The tirst story is that Barnes, alias Stubbing, knowing where the stolen silver was hidden, and that it could be bought for £ 1.000 odd, soue'ht Barrett., and persuaded him to become the purchaser of it with him, saying that if they could buy it he knpw where they could re-sell it for £ 1.600, and that then Barnes went to the police and «criiiced Barrett for the sake of his tip as an informer. The other iitory is that Barrett, being a man in a :rgish way -of •u-iiie-s and wiih a good deal of money, was approached by those who had the- ,-«?r and asked to purchase it. Barr tt a-nd Barnes w ere old pals, and had done busi- ness together. Barrett mentioned tho matter to Barnes, and Barnes offered to help lü<.k for a purchaser. How he did so is now well known. Matters had got too hot for any but the [widest to trust themselves with the silver. Barrett then. believing in Barnes's bogus pur- chaser. went .-lid bought the silver, parted >vith his Ll,000, and got arrested, whilst the actual thief of the silver not only escaped, but obtained the £ 1,000. But where does "Gray' come iu? Aga^n there are two stories. One is that Barrett, not having the necessarv £ 1,000. went to "GraY," and got him to stand in. The other is that "Gray" was a friend of the actual possessor of the silver, and, happen- ing to oe present when Barrett called for th ingots, went back with Barrett to draw for his friend the balance of the purchase money which Barrett was to pay on parting with the silver to his own purchaser. Whichever wa.v it was. "Gray" is well known to the police, and his is beyond doubt a most important arrest. ffp was described in this column when he first app-ared in the dock as a man who seemed a gentleman. The Illovo iF a steel steamship of I M2 tuns net register, belonging to Mr. John i hoinas Rennie, of Aberdeen. She is employed in carrying general cargoes between London Mid Natal, and on the 9th of October last she was at Swansea, where she shipped 845 t ms cf South Wales steam coal. called Ocean Merthyr coal. The coal was taicen straight from the Four and Six Foot Seams of the pit- of the Ocean Coal Company (Limited), and 479 tons were put in the t/utjker^ of the Illovo and 366 tons in the main hold. intended for use on the vessel's return voyage from Natal. The Illovo left Swansea on the 9th, and arrived in the London Docks on the 11th of October, and was berthed alongside the steamship Ifafa. which belongs to the same owners. On October 16 the fore-hold of the Illovo was washed out, and in the afternoon the vessel was noticed to have a list to starboard. The officers were of opinion that some of the water had run into the main-hold, where the coal was stored, The carpenter (A. Stoddard! was ordered to go and s»e whether the bilges which run into the ?,C? _1_ engine-room were clear. He was observed to take no lights with him when he went be'-ow. but about four minutes after he had disap- peared an explosion, which was supposed to have been caused by the generation of coal gas. took place- Ropes were immediately low ered and the carpenter was drawn up on deck. when his hands and body were found to be severely burned. He was taken to a hospital, where he died two days afterwards. A coroner's inouiry was subsequently held on his body. and a verdict of Accidental death was returned. The chief officer and chief engineer of the Illovo were also seriously injured by the explosion. *'Jr. Howard Smith conducted the inouiry on behalf of the Board of Tradf-.—Mr. Joseph Thomas, inspector of mines for the South Wales district, said that the steam coa.l taken from the Ocean pits was of a very inflammable quality, and that no naked lights ought to be taken into the hold of a shi-n where it was stored. A large quantity of gas was given off from all the coal taken from the Ocean pits. It was very im- portant that the main hold of the Illovo should have been pronerlv ventilated. Witness said it was not customary to inform the buyer of the coal whether it was taken straight from the mine.—At the conclusion of the evidenoe Mr. Marskam reserved iudgment. _?--?- -?

Beat Sharks with a Coat
Beat Sharks with a Coat SAILOR'S STRrGGLE ON A BIT OF WRECKAGE. When Picked up he was Clad only in a Shirt and Dazed fer Lack of Food. Captain Hopkins, of the four maE'" d schooner Star of the S-c-a, of Boston, on his arrival at New York, reported that on. the 25th iust., in Lax. 5516.. Long. 76.41. be sigjhtt-d a piece of wreckage which appeared to bt the top of a vessel's house. On closer inspection ht suw a man standing on the house waving a coat, olad only in. a shirt. A small boat was launched in charge of two seamen, who suc- ceeded in rescuing the man. and brought him on board the Star of the Sea. He was in a condition, and it was some time before "no was able to give an account of himself. After his wants were attended to. he gave his name as Benjamin F. Weeks, aged 50 years, of il- niington. and stated that h, belonged to the s -hooner Harry S. Laid, Captain Kimball, from Cape Havti for New York, w ltl. a cargo of logwood. The Lord sailed from tht Cape. on October 12. She experienced variable weather, wiij. hearry eem which eaustci her to strain badly, so irtuch so that she sprang a bad lé2k. On October 23, owing to tht heavy sea running, she became water logged. A heavy sea struck her, which started the after- house, and it soon broke adrift, and floated a-way from the vessel. We^ks jumped on top of the house, preferring to take this chance of being pick-d up by some passing vessel rather than remain on the wreck. The house floated in the vicinity of the wrecK until next nay. the 24th, when they drifted apart. We«;k-j was without food or vt-ter, a.:id, after being adrift 24 hours, de- spaired of ever being rescind. Sharks beyond nember surrounded him, but he managed to beat them off with his coat, which, with the shirt, he wore, was all the clothing he had. On th- morning of the 25th, much to his delight, he sighted a large schooner bearing down to- wards him. Almost frantic with the hopes of bt;ng rescued, he stood up and waved his coat in ord"r to attract the attention of the schooner s ciew. Captain Hopkins, who waa at the wheel of the Star of the Sea, had ob- served the floating wreck, and also that it con- tained a man. He put his wheel hard over and bore down tc the wreck. In less that twenty minutes after it was first sighted Weeks wsc standing on the vessel's deck. His joy was so great over his rescue that for gome time he was unable to speak, and he could scarcely believe that he wis saved from death- Weeks ould give no account of his vessel or shipmates. Captain Hopkins stated that when he took Weeks from the wreck he saw a steamship ten raijes astern. Slue (apparently had dianged her course several time*, and had, in all pro- bability, fallen in wi:11 the watei-logged schooner and taken off her crew. -?-
BRITISH CHINESE FLEET
BRITISH CHINESE FLEET DECIDED IT SHALL BE FERKA- NElilLY IKCBEASED. The Central News says that, in addition to strengthening the Mediterranean and Channel fleets in the manner announced last week, the Government has decided also to increase very materially and permanently the British naval strength in the Far flast. This decision was made known at Shseraoss on Tuesday afternoon, when an intimation was received by the dockyard authorities from the .Admiralty to the effect that lier Majesty's ships Edgar and Spartan, which were sent from the Mediterranean to China to augment tempo- rarily the Chinese squadron during rhe recent, war, are to form part of the permanent naval force serving in Chinese waters. In addition, however, to this actual numerical increase, which has primarily been rendered politic hy thc demonstration made by Japan d her great naval strength, it has been decided that the British Chinese squadron shall be strengthened by the re-placing of some of the older vessels by newer and more powerful ships of war. To this end, orders have been already sent to Sheerness Dockyard to commission ou ihe 19th inst. the first-class cruisers Immortalite and Narcissus for service on 'he China Station., iclieving, as explained above, two of the less efficient ships, which will be sent to Knglxod ic pay off. The Immortalite and Narcissus were formerly attached to the Channel Sqrad- rcn. The Central New? further states that her Majesty's ship Cordelia was commissioned at Portsmouth on Tuerday, and her Majesty's ship Forte will be ready for bea on ine Icth inst.

CHIEF LIBERAL WHIP. The "Wori-i" says:—Mr. Thomas Li lie's retur-n from abroad opens up for hun another "struggle with adverse circumstances, to quote the words he used most feelingly in his own defence for faiang to catisfy his party's demands wlhen he was whipping the aforesaid pa.rty steadily on towards Parliamentary extinction. The Liberal centra! office is at present in a state wincii is little short of cha«os. The officials at headquarters, though loyal, can nardlv disguise their dissatisfaction with the want of up-fco-da-tcness in the machinery they are supposed to control. TIlle provincial agents are clamouring for decentralisation, knowing that they have next to no chance of ever getang it. Until a radical reform is effected in their present electoral machinery, the: Liberals have very little hope of doing better at the next general election tSian hhev did at the last. They know it. and they never weary of letting Mr. Thomas Eiiis know that they know it. Wherefore his lot is just now far from being a happy one.
