SERIOUS CHARGE AT ROSS.
SERIOUS CHARGE AT ROSS. A CARMARTHEN SCHOOLMASTER CONVICTED. At Harewood End Petty Sessions, Ross, en Monday L. Morgan (39), a schoolmaster, Carmarthen, brought up on remand charged with unlawfully procuring charitable contributions under a false pretence from Mr Charles Lee Camjpibell, of Glewstone Court, in the parish of Marstow, Ross, on October 1, was convicted.—Mr. Joseph Henry Jones, solicitor, Cardiff, who defended, said the prisoner, who was highly connected, had been a schoolmaster, and was also well connected by marriage. The prisoner had been ill from influenza, which had affected his head. He had been schoolmaster at several places, and had been given several testimonials in tho way of watches and chains. Up to the present nothing had been known against the prisoner's character. Prisoner, through him (Mr. Jones), wished to express his regret at whaifc he had; done. Mr. Jones proceeded to call evidence to show that the prisoner had held the appointments which Mr. Jones nad read. If, one witness stated, prisoner had had his rights he would, under a trust, be entitled to £ 170 a year.—The Bench, taking into con- sideration the prisoner's good character, decidod to deal as leniently as possible with him, but could not do less than send him to prison, aud he would have to go to Hereford Gaol for 'one month.
LATE RECTOR OF MERTHYR.j
LATE RECTOR OF MERTHYR. A SON-IN-LAW ENGAGED ON HIS BIOGRAPHY. To the Editor of the "Evening Express." Sir,—I have had in contemplation for some time the writing of the biography of my father- in-law, the late John Griffith, rector of Merthyr Tydfil. It is in accordance with a strongiy^expressed wish in many quarters that I have "persuaded mynelf to undertake the task. The volume will include, in addition to the biography, a sketch of the history of the Ohurch in Wales during his life-time, specimens of his sermons, a numerous selection of his letters, and speeches on important topics of general interest. I should take it ae a kindness, row tilat I have taken the work in hand, if those of the "Western Mail" readers who happen to have contributions or letters from the old R-ector of Merthvr in their possession would kindly forward them to me, at the office of this paper I need hardly say that every care will be taken of the MSS., and thait they will be returned at the earliest opportunity.—I am, &c., CHARLES A. H. MACARTNEY FILGATE. Oct. 7, 1895.

CHURCH FOR MAESTEG
CHURCH FOR MAESTEG FOUNDATION STONE-LAYING YES- TERDAY. Church extension in the Diocese of Llandaff is proceeding- so rapidly that the Lord Bishop is constantly engaged in the dedication of new churches, and in officiating at the laying of foundation-stones, and on> Monday hie lordship was present at the laying of the foundation- stone of the new church of St. Michael's and All Angels at Maesteg, which is to provide facilities for the English Church worshippers of the place, who now have to hold their ser- vices in Maesteg Ciiuroh alternately with the Welsh members of the eoingregation. Maesteg is in the parish of Llangynwyd, the ener- cetic vicar of which is the Rev. Stephen Jack- soil. and it is questionable whether in any parish m the diocese greater pro- gress has been made in the direction of Church extension than in Mi is parish. The Church of St. Michael's will be woted on a site, ",¡vel" by MiSl;1 Talbot, or. the hiCtaid# at the back of Commercial-street, anc when ccm- plettrtl it will comfortably seat about 600 adults- Tlhe building wiJl eompriVo a tower OY.I' 100ft. in height, a nave with clear vVtory, large vestries, and a chanoel, the chair portion of which will accommodate 150 choristers. The design is after the first pointed sfryle of English Gotihio. Mr. M'Gaul (Bridgend) is the contractor, and. Mr. G. E. HalndtLV, of Cardiff and Liandnff, the archi- tect. It is intended at the outset to spend £4,000 uaon that portion of the building re- quired for the punpoises of worship, and towards this sum £ 3,480 has been already sub- scribed, including 9500 laid upon the founda- tion-stone on Monday. A handsome sub- scriber to the building fund, it may be men- tioned1, wac the late Miss Olive TV.foot. and the atone land on Monday was a. memorial m wt'll as a foundation stone, and intended to be a lasting tribute to her memory. A 'ong procmaion was formed from Maesteg Church, in which the bishop, clergy, choristers, a. company of the Church Lads' Brigade, and members of the oongrega.tion took part, and the processionists, who made an im- posing show and whose progress was watched by hundreds of people, sang en route to the site of the new olvu-ch The Church s one foundation." The memorial stone was laid by Mrs. iLeighton, Miss Talbot's aieoe and I second daughter of Mrs. Keteher, and the service was conducted by the lord Bishop. There were present at the ceremony -The Revs. Stephen Jackson, vicar of Llangynwyd; David Davies, vicar of Newcastle; Z. P. After the ceremony luncheon- was held' in the mission-room, and a toast list was gone through.—The Lord Bishop. in responding to the toast of -his health, referred to t.he extTaordinary progress made in -he parish sir.ee i.he advent of the Rev. Stephen Jackson, and spoke ic the highest terms of the iRienercsaty of Miss Ta.lbot and' Mliss Œ,jve Talbot, which had enabled them to provide suoh extensive facilities for Church congrega- tions in that and neighbouring districts. The health of Mrn. Leighton was drunk with great enthusiasm, and M.V. iLeighton suitably acknowledged! the toast. During the luncheon the Vicar read a. letter from Mrs. Eveline Campbell, who expressed heartfelt regret at being unable to be present. It should be mentioned that Mrs. Leighton was presented with a carved oak mallet, made of a portion of the old beams at Llangynwyd Church, and suitably inscribed, and a silver trowel, the gift of the architect and contractor. \I

In a few short weeks "Santa Clans" will have cern" and gone, and the time has arrived again to commence in earnest to help the "Evening Express" movement to feed the hungry and clothe the naked little children at Yule-tide. Already many of our friends are bestirring A. themselves irt various ways, assisting and co- operating, aa they know so well how to do, and the movement is fast forming into shape, and beginning to work as smoothly as last voar. There is much talk now of "darkest Cardiff," and if it is dark now, what will it be in the com- ing winter months, when the poor suffer most and the children of the poor the. most of all? Will not, then, those who have the means and are alble do something, if ever so little, to provide wholesome food and decent clothing jmd toys for the waifs and strays, that they may inter in some degree into the spirit and enjoy some of the good '.hings of the festive season. [ROBBERY AT CARDIFF.
ROBBERY AT CARDIFF. MRS. LEWIS OF GREENMEADOW LOSES A SATCHEL. A jewel robbery of an exceptionally daring nature is alleged to have been committed at the Great Western Railway Station. Cardiff, on Saturday evening last. MIA X 'pwi?.. of GreehmMdow. arrived at the railway station from London by the express train due a* 6.59. She travelled ;n a. firtt-cliwg carriage, and she carried, with hot: a satchel, which contained her ,}e\»rel-case- Ihirinig tlie journey Mrs. Lewis kept a 'va.tchful eye -npon this valuable handbag, hr.); tijion reaching Cardiff she seems to have ^oiR-ottea fo" a moment the expensive articles it contained. Her luggiage 'as taken out of t-he guard s van by a porter and plaoed on a barrow, and it seems the lady handed to the porter the satch el to convey over the line to her carriage, await- ing outside the station entrance. She herself proceeded by t 'he subway. Upon meeting tfhe porter near the .exit doors she immediately missed the satchel, a.nd the man. thinking that it might have dropped off the barrow whilst in transit, at once returned in search ■> i1-. Hot was Tinable to find it, how. VP.«-, and the sCatton- master was arf. oinoe c-ommunicarted. with. Telegrams were despatched to the various stfctaone at which the down irain .stopped, but. although the officials were on the alert, no trace of the missing jewels was found upon anv of the passengers. Telegrams were also sent to London and other (places, but without anv ffueceHs. Mrs. Lewis quickly informed the Ttojioe of her loss, and detectives instituted a. seaxclv, but up to Monday evening they had not lieen able to find the slightest trace of the bag or its oontente. It is surmised that the bag fell off the barrow whilst being con- veyed from one platform to the other, and that someone picked it up. andl either pro- ceeded with it on his or her journey or left the station before the porter could report the loss. It the former theory iN correct, it is somewhat strange that the railway officials been unable to trace the satchel, and a.t 'Ae present time tfhe chances of recovering the property seem rather remote, The jewellery consisted of Si gold watch and guard, brooches, bracelets, &c., and was valued at over £ 100. _.?-
