I EUROPEAN COMPLIC TIONS.
I EUROPEAN COMPLIC TIONS. FRANCE AND THE ABYSSINIAN HBOUBLE. The Paris correspondent of the "Times" mites :-It. is long since a question of foreign affairs not directly concerning France has aroused so much interest here as the proceedings of the Italians in Abyssinia. Owing, mainly, to Italy's encroachments upon the precincts of Harar, Abyssinia, which to a Frenchmen is nothing more; nor less than the hinterland of Obok and Jibuti, has all along excited parti- cular sympathy. At present they look to events to enlighten them speedily as to the real nature of the Anglo Italian arrangement respecting the Upper Nile valley. They refuse as yet to believe that England thinks of ceding Zeila to Italy, yet they seem to feel that such a cession would demonstrate the understanding between these two Powers in that region. The presence of Italy there Frenchmen usually attri- bute to the counsel and wmplaisance of Lord Cromer. If England gave up Zeila there would no longer be any doubt in their minds. Not only would Franco consider such ao act un- friendly in itself, but the "Temps" maintains only would France consider such ao act un- friendly in itself, but the "Temps" maintains that it would be directly contrary to the arrangement of February, 1888, whereby I Fraiice and England engaged not to occupy Harar without each other's consent and guaianteed the free passage of caravans between Zeila and Harar. The "Temps" can- not but believe that Lord Salisbury will respect his own convention, as scrupulously as Lord Kimbcriey, whose negotiations with Italy failed on account of that obstacle. Nor does it believe that Italy will expose herself to a re- fural by soliciting a passage for her troops, whioh would be an evasion of the convention end would injure the French colony of Obok by giving her surreptitious possession of terri- tory in dispute between herself and France.
FOOTBALL AND NEWSPAPERSI
FOOTBALL AND NEWSPAPERS A HEATED ATTACX BY AN EBBW VALE MINISTER. The Rev. '1"- Richards, Congregational minister, Ebbw Vale, in an address on "Setf- Culture" to the scholars of Sirhowv Evening Continuation Glasses, said that football in it- self was, no doubt, a ^plendud means of exer- cise, but football ae it was carried on just now was an abominable nuisance. What evil pass:ona it sfcirred up in the hearts of the people who witnessed it! They bowled and screamed and shouted as if they were a pack of idiots. From one Saturday to an-other they talked of nothing, they tho- gM of nothing, and they even dreamt of nothing, but football. He heard of a young man dn the district the other day who refused to attend the funeral of his own child until a local match, announced to be played that day had been witnessed by him. The secret was that he had staked 5s. on the match. The win- ing of a paltry 5s. was more important in his sight thaa tthe remains of his child—joining in the howls and screams of a frenzied crowd more important than assisting his young wife to the graveyard, and consoling and comfort- ing her in her sorrow That man was an inhuman and brutal wreteli, and football, with its evil associations, made him such. He advised young men, if they scared for their self-improvement, for their success in life, and for the welfare of their souls, to shun the football field, a? it was con- ducted to-day, as they would a snare and a danger. Dealing with reading, Mr. Richards said that of the plethora of newspapers and weekly and monthly very few were of any worth. Newspajpec people catered to the very lowest tastes of humanity. Their chief abject was to make the paper pay, and. the very lowest tastes of humanity. Their chief object was to make the paper pay, and. therefore, it must oontain nothing but those things which were palatable to th-e great :ma.o¡; of humanity. Hence tbev found more promi- nence given to a football match than to a scientific lecture, more spa-ce given to a breach of promise or a divorce case than to an evan- gelical sermon, and more attention paid to gambling and horse-racimg than to philanthropic and charitable movements. His advice to I young people was to spend very little time with the newap&per?, and still less with, many of the weekly and monthly masraziaes.

A CHRISTMAS HOAX.
A CHRISTMAS HOAX. LLANDAFF RESIDENT IN- UNDATED WITH SAMPLES. "A. H. Llandaff, writes to the "Morning Post" cautioning the public in gereral and I large firms in particular about a new kind of practical joke that is coming into vogue? On Saturdiy (he says) by every post I was inun- dated with samples of all manner of things, such as tea, dress materials, and linoleum, together with catalogues from watchmakers, jewellers, ruanufacuirers of pottery, and others. All the samples are from well-known firms, some of whom have sent large boxes of patterns, accompanied by notes asking me to return them within fourteen days. It is evident that the firms in question are the victims of a hoax which involves both them and me in unnecessary trouble and expense.
TICHBORNE CRAZE.
TICHBORNE CRAZE. -? CRESSWELL TO BE BROUGHT TO ENGLAND. The London correspondent of the "Western Daily Mercury" says:—I leajn from a friend at Sydney that the Australians are beginning to find the Ticlhborne case another version of Sinbad's Old Man of the Sea. There is no getting rid of it. True, the Claimant hais ad- mitted that he is Arthur Orton., and to the great majority of those possessing a little common eense this should prove the finale of the great cause celebre. But there are others who refuse to be convinced, and among these are those who contend that William Cresswell, who has been for several years an inmate of the Par- ramatta Lunatic Asylum, is the veritable Sir Roger. The Sydney residents who have inte- rested tbeaniseSves in the case have just received power of attorney to proceed in the matter, and in a- few days tihe New South Wales Supreme Court will be asked to grant a writ of habeas oorpus, in order that Cresswell may be brought to London with a view to obtaining his recog- I nition as the long-missing baronet. It is alleged that the links in the ohain of evidence are complete; but, on the other hand, the lunatic asylum officials express their convic- tion that tihe lunatic is William Cressweill, and no other. However, the matter will be thoroughly sifted in the Sydney Law Courts.

The barque Ancaros, 1.704 tons register, which left Swansea in June last witii wials for San Francifco. rear-hed port on November 24. after a passage of 177 days out. Pveports in the American papers describe the condition of the crew as pitiable in the extreme. Hunger and disease had reduced the crew to a wretched position, and five men were lying helpless in their bunks from scurvy. After the trouble arose about food the crew complain that they were harshly treated by the mate? in consequence, I and one of the seamen—Peter Peters—jumped overboard and was drowned. Serving a Life Sentence
Serving a Life Sentence A BOY 3IIRDERER NOW GROWING OLD. He ha.s Served Twenty Years in Gaol and Made Ma.ny Desperate Efforts to Escape. Jesse Pomeroy, who was once known all over the world as "the boy murderer," has new t-erved nearly twenty years of his life sentence t;) solitary confinement in the Charlestown Prison, America. He was seventeen "vhen Ion was committed; he is 56 now. Yet it :s strange despite these weary years of solitary confine- ment, how the boyish immature looks cling to him. His sallow cheeks may have gained an added pallor, a few pound? have been added to his lanky five feet nine, but a thin moustache is the principal thing that disiinguishes the Char lest own boy from the Charleetown con- vict. His disposition has not improved much under discipline. He hae read and studied enough to be a learned man, and has suffered enough to be a wise one, but he is still rebel- lious, still restless, unable to ao. cept the inevitable as final. His mind is alert and keen and his general health good. Physically be seems to have be- come acclimated to his strange life. He wae the first person in the State to be sentenced to eoiitary confinement for life. He was first sentenced to be hanged, but his extreme youth and the evidence that he was born with a ten- dency to be cruel influenced Governor Gmton to commute the sentence. There was a loud protest against this show of clemency. The whole country had been shocked at the pecu- liar atrocity of his crime. He cut the throat of little Kittie Curran, and hid the corpse in the cellar of his mother's house. No trace of her could be found, but on April 22, 1874, the corpse of four-year-old Horace Millen was fcund in the marshes in South Boston, where Pcroeroy had tied him to a stake, and then had stabbed him to dea-th. The last crime was traced to this murderer, and he then con- fessed to killing the Curran girl. Both bodies were shockingly mutilated. When asked why he killed the Millen boy he said:—"I don't know; something told me to do it." "When you started off to the flate with the child did you intend to kill him?" he wiw abked. "I don't know," he replied. "I think I meant to stick a knife into him, but I don't know whether I intended to kill him or not." Pocneroy wa<. first sent to the prison at Concord, and there made several sensational attempts to escape. He was then transferred to Charleetown. and when the prison gates elcsed behind him they i-ihi:t him from the sight of the Min forever. He was plated in a cell in the "arch" or the "Cherry Hill" Koc-k. where the turbulent prisoners are con- fir,ed for longer or shorter periods. He has a good-sizrd room, 16ft. by 8ft-. with two chinks in the roof, which admit daylight. His bed is a comfortable cne, and the entire room is reat and orderly. He himself is quite careful of his persona": appearand, aaid faae the services of a barber to keep him looking well. He tries various experiments with his beard, but his moustache he wears constantly. But he is always plotting to escape. Hia ingenuity in getting and hiding things which. can assiist him in digging up the floors and wails of his oell is ma«rvellous. No one seee him except his mother, bitrther, a young niece, and the prison officials, yet the most surpris- ing thing* are found in his possession. In 1887 he made a saw out of a piece of steel, and cut off the bars of his oell. He in some way oauped an explosion of gas. 2M was knocked unoonsoious. or he might have reached the corridor. Four years ago he made another saw. and cut off the leg of his iron bedstead and shoved back the bolt to his oell door. He must have been in the cor- ridors before he was discovered. A drill and a saw were found in his cell. He has times now of picking at the walls and floors, but it is believed that he does it more to annciy the oept the inevitable 8.fi final ing. He does not ask many favours. He woua like to go in and out with the rest of the men who work in the various shops. He is not ambitious to work, and what he does is volun- tary. He is given rattan rockers to wind. but he only does about six a week, where other "f>olitaires" in the same corridor do forty. Most of his time is spent in reading and study. He can speak three languages, and knows a great deal of history. He is very sensitive as to what the newspapers say about him, though he never is allowed to read them. His mother tells him of it. and it is for her sake that hr cares. Really, he seems very fond of her, and she is the cne person who lia-s never wavered in her devotion to him. His father is living, but has never come to the prison. His brother has not been there for several years, but his mother, with true affection, comes every two months— as often as the law allows-to visit him. Shut in as he is, he has a wonderful knowledge of what is going on in the prison. His hearing I is abnormally acute.
