"WHAT ABOUT MANGLES!"
"WHAT ABOUT MANGLES!" Timef are so bad I cannot afford to buy a wringer and mangle, although, from what you say, I should like one. Ob, yes; I have my family to wash for, and in wet and foggv weather the washing is laying about for days. Firing? Yes, of course, it takes a deal of extra firing to dry the clothes in the winter before they are ready for mar, cling. How much does the extra "tiring cost? About 8d a week, and 3d. for mangling makes lid. If it is really true that Spencer, of the Baby Carriage Warehouse, n the Church, St. John's-square, Cardiff, would supply me with a 24-inch wringer and man?le for 45s. on my paying 6s. as deposit and 6s. a month? Oh. yes; I can see now how foolieb I have been in paying lld. every week for extra firing and mangling, wheress, if I bad one of those 45s. mangles, and paid at the rate of Is. fed. per week for 26 weats, it would have been mine. Besides, I can see how much more comfortable the home would have been for my husband if I cou'd have got the clothes washed, dried, and put away by the time he got home, the same as you have done. Do they? Ob, that is splendid. That is an easy way, only have to send 6a, with full name and address and husband's occupation, and the mangle is sent carriage paid. Well, yes; it is better late than never; I wiE have one at once. Re-p ,.oe tollers free erf charge if they crack within twelve months from date of purchase? Do they? It is in- deed a wonder Spencer does not supply all the mangles in the country. Other size minifies from 298 6<1 cAM, as well as washing machines, wringers, etc., so I have heard, and, if ready money is paid, one can get a good discount Certainly, if we had I money in the bank, we would take out 35s. 9d. at once and pay cash, instead of paying 466. We should get so much better interest on our mcney. Yes, thank you, I know the address, it is A. W. Spencer, The Universal Provider for Babies, near the Church, St. John s-square, Cardiff. LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. "THE MANXMAN" AT CARDIFF GRAND THEATSE. A large and fashionable audience assembled at the Grand Theatre en Monday evening to srreet the return visit of that most successful oi modern plays, "The Manxman." When, fourteen months ago, Mr. Wilson Barrett thrilled all Cardiff with his stirring adaptation of Mr. Hall Cainc-'s finest novel, we poured a iJtrfect flood of eulogy on what we described as one of the mos-t intanselv human and pathetic plftjrs of the periods. Our opinions have r ct changed in the intervaL "The Manxman" is as impressive now as on its first visit, and tha vast concourse of people at Mr. Sound's theatre on Monday evening were moved a* much as they were on the first local production of the play. No piOO3 in the annais of modern drama. is so genuinely pathetic as that founded on ^r' Hall Caine's well-known work. The appalling Jove tragedy in "The Manxman is unique in stage history. It is essentially a piay of emotion—not of action a play of the present and not of the past. What happened to ''Kate Cre«^an" (improbable as it> may appear) can also happen to any woman, and thus it is that tthe interest in the play is ever fresh and striking. Mr. Maurice E. Band- mann's company was responsible for the pre- sentation of the play on Monday evening, and a fine presentation it was. Every member of The company seems to realise the arduous and important nature of the undertaking, and, con- sequently, earnestness reigns supreme. The "Pete" of Mr. Magill Martyn is most power- fully portrayed. There is nothing forced or exaggerated in the delineation. Mirs GeT- tru<le Evans's "Kate" is sympathetic to a degree. Every word and action of hers is expressive of the mixed fickleness and remorse thi-t the character was intended to convey. Mr. Arthur Benedict's "Prince,OhrisH-an" iii artistic portrayal, and the ''Caesar Creeg-an*' of Mr. Harry Cave is quite as hypocritical as )1: Caine made him. The comic parrs are delight- fully rendered Ly Messrs. A. E. Pring-Ie, Cyril Houghton, and E. Sturrtv. Their drunken scene is one of the funniest spectacles seen in Cardiff for a Ion? time. In short, both tie 2~t:stes and soenery are worthv of the fine play, and we shall be surprised if there is not a full house at the Grand each evening the piece is performed. THE EMPIRES- CARDIFF. The name of Lady Mansfl attracted a larje crowd to the Cardiff Empire on Moridoy even- ing-. The management have backed up Lady Mansel's engagement with a company of artistes of which nearly everyone contributes a stsr turn- Of them the pair which deserve the greatest praise, and are worthy of a more prominent position in the programme than they recaive, are Mezzetti and Mora, who are quite the smartest couple of triple bar per- formers ever seen in South Wales. This. the last item on t,he protrramme, was preceded by the appearance of Lady Mansel, who sang two sparkling songs, and, in response to a Ir t.hird call, gave a clever skipping rope danoe. The remaining "turns" are all of high excellence. NEWPORT. The programme this week has seldom been equalled. Variety and excellence all its characteristics, and the entertain men t r-iio^id on no account be missed. First and fore- most in merit is the performance provided by 'he peerless Glinserettis. As a troupe of acrobats they staaid alone, and tbp thrilling and marvellous acts which they ptrl ->rm roused the audiences on Monday evening to a pitch of excitement not often seem even at the Empire. But this enthusiasm was onlv a prelude to the applause which ere'ted Miss Kaite James, the London idol. when the appeared on the stage. Miss James added another to her already crowded list of successes. Fun, fast and furious, reigned during the time the Dolph Rowella Pan torn nm Troupe occupied the boards, and the audiences were kept in a roar. The Four "Vampires, in "A Cockney in France"; Miss Kitty Nolan, a pleasant linger of Irish songs; Will Dalton, a funny character comedian; and Jessie Albini. serio-comic, contribute to a large extent to the enjoyment of the evening. SWANSEA. On Monday evening at Swansea, Empire the chief turn ir. a. first-class entertainment is that contributed by Max Biil's bears. It is really marvellous that five such dull a,n.imals can be trained to such a pitch as to aftord genuine amusement. as they do, and the novel feature of the performance should be suc- cessful in drawing big houses througliout the wf-ek, especially as, in addition t. j the bears, there are the Three Romas, strong men; The Clacks, comedians and a whole hoct of equally attractive artistes appearing each night. S3|OLL'« PANOPTICON. Tute's excellent company of minstrels com- menced their second week's stay at the Panop- ticon. Cardiff, on Monday evening, and gave an enjoyable entertainment to a large audience. The trcupe includes a number 'of excellent vcoalists, and the songs they sing are taking and well given. The "end" men work up no end of good drollery, and when it is said their fun is new the warmth of the praise of minstrels will be understood. If any man can listen to the Tute jokes with a serious face he had better ooneult his friends. The troupe v>"ill appear every evening throughout tin- week, and the programme will be varied at each performance. Those who have not yet patroi ised the entertainment shoul I not fail tc do so. In the curio halls the Aztecs con- tinue to attract large numbers of people, as aicr does Pierre, the elastic-skinned man. The naze is also proving a great attraction in its re-decorated form.

TAFF VALE DISPUTE.
TAFF VALE DISPUTE. WORK SENT OUT OF THE TOWN. There is no new phase in the dispute between the Taff Vals Company and ihe.r fitters, except the fact that the disagreement is the cause of a great deal of work being s £ -nt out of the town. A statement hiLS been current to the effect that, in consequence of the strike and the smaller number of hands now engaged, there was a difficulty in getting the repairs executed. This is strongly den;ed on the part of the Tail Vale Railway Ccm- pany, who declare that they have sufficient men to do all that is required. Repairs which ad to be executed at ths West Yard, how- ever, are now done elsewhere, and the money which ought to be distributed in Cardiff goes to other towns. -?-
