FOOTBALL. TAKINGS AT THE CARDIFF V. XEWPOfiT MATCH. The amount taken at the gates on Saturday at the Cardiff Anils Park on the occasion of the rriatch between Card'ff iind Newport wa« just over £ 300. It must be remembered, however, that this does not include anything from the 6.000 ticket-holders, some 5.500 af whom, it was believed, would be present at this important fixture. Tli:- estimate, accordingly, i* that hetweeji 16.000 and 17,00(1 people watched the match. The amount taken at the gates is not so much as has been taker, upon cne or two occasions at Cardiff->iew7porr mutches. Once it reached nearly but, as the r.umber of ticket-holders was then about 2,000 lees, it is probable that the actual number ol onlookers was about the same as last Saturdav. I I BLAKEXEY TRAle" - ^ r…
I BLAKEXEY TRAle" r REMOVAL OF THE PRISONERS TO GLOUCESTER. l It will be remembered that the three prisoners, James Morgan, George Morgan, and George Hill, colliers, Wliitecroft, who had rjean committed to the assizee on a charge of murdering Police-sergea-nt Morris, of Lydney, wert, on Tuesday, at Coleford Police-court sent for trial on the charge of attempting to murder Police-constable Hard- irg. the sergeant's companion when he -lost his life on the 10th inst. at Yiney Hill. Soon after the court rose. Mr. Scobell, on behalf of Mr. R. H. Fryer, the magistrates' clerk, made out the commitment warrants, and these having been duly signed it was soon elicited in the streets that the removal of the prisoners to Gloucester would be effected that evening. Prior to their de- parture, the mother and two aunts of the Morgans, and an aunt of Hill were afforded all the consideration which ') the most liberal interpretation of the rules | t:o.vcriiing the case would a-How, and the interview was of a painful nature. It is stated that Hi 1.« father has not seen him since he left home on the fateful Sunday j morning. Since his incarceration the elder Morgan (James), who had cultivated a dark ? moustache, has grown a stubby beard. George Mor. ran's attire did not include a waistcoat; James Morgan and Hill wore a smaii coloured scarf round their necks, and they were respectab.y dressed. Since their arrrest they have been lodged in the cells at Colefoird. Prisoners, handcuffed together, left the I' police-court in charge of Police-sergeants Griffin (Colaford) and Webb (Newnhani). Podce-superinrendent Ford-ale journeying with the party, whose mournful tramp through I the street to the joint companies' railway station was observed by a considerable v r, number of eye-witnesses. Scores followed them to the railway station. When the train pulled up at Parkend the platform w as lined with colliers and others, and at White- croft a very large number gathered, the 1 platform being crowded. Thert some ot the friends of the prisoners—those who I travelled by rail—left the train while the prisoners continued their journey to Gloucester. W, le l understand that the fund which has been opened for providing means for the prisoners' defence grows daily. Last Saturday a very substantial collection for them was made at the Paj'kend Deep Navigation Co-.lieries. and one friend at Whitecroft himself has already obtained, according to the report, more than J310. As to the sub- scriptions on behaiif of the widow and chil- dren of the victim, it is elicited that Mrs. Morris is entitled to £ 15 a year from the county funds during her widowhood. The fund will be appreciably aug- mented by the members of the countv police force subscribing a day's pay. Amongst the more considerable con- tributions is £10 from Lord Fitzhaidinee, and there is reason to hope that a consider- j able sum will ultimately be raised. THE L YDXEY MAGISTRATES AND THE LATE SERGEANT MORRIS. The monthly session of the justices of the Lydnev Petty Sessions was held at the police-court on Wednesday, Captain Mar- ling being in the chair. On taking their seats, the Chairman said before tbev took tae court business he desired, on behalf of the ■oench. to say one word regarding the ter- rib.e tragedy which had recently taken place in the neighbourhood. They'felt that in Police-sergeant Morris they had lost a very efficient public servant, a man who, in all relations of life, received the respect of those who knew him, both as a public of those who knew him. both as a public servant and also as an honest ma.n. He desired to record, then. their deep sense of i the Ins? they had sustained, and at the same tone to express their deep svmpathy with ¡' his widow and family.—Poi.ice-serggant Clarke, who that d&.y represented Superin- tendent Ford. thanked the chairman for the kind sentiments which he had expressed.

Pullman was in Peril
Pullman was in Peril MAXIAC MADE rp HIS MIND TO KILL JlUl. s Also Had Another Victim but News of His Intenticn Got Out and He is Held bp Police. The life of George M. Pullman and that of I John B. Griffin, the manager of the Tui'maa building of Chicago, were menaced by an iu- sane man the other night. Both men were to have been shot and killed between the 17th and 27th of this month. The delay of the maniac in making up hi- mind who should be the first victim gave the police time co arrest him. The prisoner is William Sherman, who has been employed as a window cleaner around the Pullman building. A woman fortune teller is at present held responsible for the suggest.oo that placed the lives of Mr. ^ullman and his manager in jeopardy, and the police are now endeavouring to find her. and ask why she ?dvises her patrons to commit murder. At five o'clock in the evening word was brought Manager G-ritfin that Sher nan. usually a steady and trustworthy man, wa- rroing about the build- ing making threats to kill him and Mr. Pullman. Griffin at once started out to find th? window cleaner, but he had leir the building after re- peating his threats to seteial people. Griffin then sent word to the police. and two ofiocer* were sent out to 'look for Sherman. After searching for some time, they found him in the elevator, and took him into custody. He had no hesitation in declaring that he intended to kiU either Mr. Pullman or Mr. Griffin, or both of them. He said that during the afternoon he had consulted the fortune teller, because he was unable to sleep. The woman told him that he was troubled by secret enemies, and that unl-,is he killed them by November 17 or 27 they would kill him. She described the men to him, and' the descriptions were those of Mr. Pullman and Mr. Griffin. The wcman would not tell him the names of the men unless he paid her £ 5. This 'he declined! to do, as he knew the men by the description, he said. Sherman said he would have killed one of the men. if he could have made up his mind which one to take first. The man was palpably insane, and was removed to the detention hospital.

? ? ?,=- LEGAL ANOMALY. SONS' PRACTISING IN FATHERS' COURTS. Mr. Laboucliere, writing in this week's "Truth," says:—"I have had a letter from one of the gentlemen mentioned m last week's 'Truth' as practising- before their fathers at quarter ses- sions, to say that 'during the two and a half years for which he has attended the Monmouth- shire Quarter Ses-sions he has received one brief (which I take it means one only) 'to con- duct a case at thoie sessions.' With a somewhat misplaced modesty, this youag gentleman requests me not to mention his name, so I can only leave the reader to gue-n for himself, :f he can, to which of the parties mentioned Inst week the disclaimer applies. It is satisfactory j to hear that the offence has only been com- mitted once: and I hope that it will net be repeated. I have also received a letter on the same subject from Mr. Ernest Bowen Row- lands, but as it is very long ana very argu- mentative 1 am unable to notice it further this week.

EEDISTEIBUTIOX. CARDIFF'S CLAIM TO A SECOND SEAT. Sir Charles Dil'ks, speaking at Tonvpandy on "Wednesday nig'ns, said a redistribution of seats was talked about by their Tory friends, but he thought they wtre not likely to do any- thing but talk, for a redistribution upon a basis of population would mean the. sweeping away of nine Tory sea.ts in the universities. (Applause.) The Tories were never tired cf saying that Wales aJJd Ireland were over-represented, and yet when he had some- thing to do with the last redistribution, if there had been. another seat to give, Cardiff would haw been entitled to it. (Applause.) Cardiff at that time wag the largest single- member constituency—there were two larger now; but what he wished to point out was that, though Wale-, as a whole, might have then been over-represented, Cardiff was under- represented. and so Wales would hav*. had another seat. (Applause.)
PETER WILLIAMS.
PETER WILLIAMS. DEATH OF THE COMMENTATOR'S GRAND-DAUGHTER. It will interest our readers to learn of the death at Llau-rug, Carnarvonshire, of an old uady who was the grand-daughter of the Rev. Peter Williams, one of the founders Rev. Peter Williams, one of the founders of Welsh Xoneonfonnity. The dec-cased lady wavS first married to a Mr. Melbourne, a merchant in a large way of business in the West Indies, and after his death returned to the family home at Pantavon, near Llanrug. in Carnarvonshire. There she caused gTeat amusemtnt among the natives through her "New W oman s" ideas. She was verv fond of hunting and ridirg, and' might always be depended upon to be at the meet. Latterly the home was broken up, and the estate, after being in Chan-eery, was sold to Mr. J. Watkin. nephew of Sir Edward Watkin, the great railway director, and owner of the greater part of Snowdon. Mrs. Melbourne removed to Anglesey where she held a farm in Pentraeth. ? While there she married a young man below her station in life, named Itdward Jones. A curious story is told of the manner in which thE marriage was arranged. It is said that Mrs. Melbourne was one day cleaning the stable of her favourite steeds, whe.n the young mr'n. who was a farm labourer, happened to pass, and commented nn her devotion. She immediately answered, like Queen Elizabeth. '"Well, do you faint hope for me?" He answered, "Yes." A few days later the young man happened to pass the pla e once more. when she called out to him. "Have you found a husband for me yet ?'' The youth replied. shamefacedly. "Xo. I haven't, unless you'll take me." She immediately replied in the affirmative, and the match was arranged. Whether this story is true or not we can- not say. but it is certain that she subse- quently married him, and appears to have been very happy in her choioe. A few days ago the lady fell ill and died, and was buried in JJia.nrug Churchyard. At. the burial service in the old church the family lawyer read a curious will. After the customary formalities, the testatrix went on to oommamd that after her death she was to be dressed in her hunting habit of divided skirt, jacket, peaked cnn. and strong boots, and so laid in her coffin. All her other clothes were to be burnt, as was also her oarriage. Her favourite horses (one of them worth at leasi JB60) were to be shot on the morning following her funeral. Having devised part of her property to her various relatives, provided the above c.auses were carried out, she willed the remainder of her property (which was considerable) r between her husband, niece, and sister-in- law.

?- ?- I CARDIFF MUSICAL SOCIETY. THE FIRST CONCERT OF THE SEA- SON. The Cardiff Musical Society commenced th(-ir series of concerts for the eighth season with a performance of "Samson-" at the Park- hall- on There was a large and pppreciative audit no?. Madam* Medora Herson, who inicle a decided impres- sion at the Cardiff Triennial Festival, when she wa? suddenly called upon to fill Mi-s Ella Russell's place, took the soprano parts, but her allotment was, of course, so small that she had little opportunity if distinguishing herself. Ye Men of G-aza, was, perhaps, th3 better rendered of hfr two prominent airj, b1't the popularity of "Let the Bright Serai him," together with the appropriate energy she threw into her interpretation, se- cured her a hearty round of applause. Mise Mirnie Chamberlain's voice, though it would he heard, perhaps, to greater advantage in chamber music, wa» highly appreciated. Her low notes ate particularly sweat al-li liquid, and what she lacks in power she gmj& jp jyurity of tone. In the alt-o parts whloh she undertook she sustained a general excellence, and if one item more than another can be chosen for special mention it should be the Air, "Return. O God of Hosts There was little opportunity for discrimination in her sing.ng, however. Mr. Lloyd Chandcs revealed the artist in his work, though he seemed to reserve his voice rather more than war necessary. "Samson's" resignation, "I t should be so," was a soulful and pathetic rendering, and he also shone in the duet, with Mr. Ffrangoon Davies, Go, Baffled Coward, Go." Mr. Ffrangcon Davies's singing is too well known to tequire comment. His voice appears to gain in power every time sings. He was the favourite of the night, and when no had concluded a masterly rendering of the well-known air. "Honour and Arms." h3 was the recipient of quite an enthusia-st'o oration. In contrast, to that stirring number vas his ringing of How willing my paternal love, which was as carefully as pathetically iendered. The choir, of which the sopranos deserve especial mention, showed much pre- cision in mtack, but some of their best work was not fully appreciated, though the audience rightly applauded to the echo the concluding I -id i, item of the first part., "Then round about the stairy throne." To the orchestra great praise it-t-st be accorded, a large meed of which is also due to the conductor, Mr. T. E. Aylward. -?--?-
