LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. "THE FORTY THIEVES" AT THE THEATRE ROYAL. Judging from the reception given to the pantomime of "The Forty Thieves at the s Theatre Royal, Cardiff, since its production on Christmas Eve, there is every probability of a long and suecess&ul run. As u^ual, I opinions 0 differ as to the merit of the play, 1(, but there is a vast majority who consider it t to be one of the best pantomimes, produced in Cardiff. The ma.tinee-t on 1 hm-du.y, Friday, ] and Snturdny were well attended, and in tli ■ I i evenings money had to be relumed. The 1 artistes lwve now settled down to their work, and .vevtntl new features will be introduced I] this week. ? DICK WHITTINGTON AT THE GilAXD THEATRE, CARDIFF. I In order to admit of the new Empire in Queen-street being completed, the performances usually given ac- that popular place of amut*- ment will be transferred to the Panopticon in St. Mary-street to-day (Monday). A fine array of artistes bap been engaged, and the Edwin Iveene and Kate Rt-eves Combination are certain to provide pient-y of comedy in their musical sketch entitled "A Run for a Wife." The Masco-tte Quartette of charming lady dancers; lU is" Sable Fern, a ballad vocalist and danoer; Mr. T. B. Fayme, a comic singer; Max Hill's performing b"ars; James and Andy Howard, in their manifestations cf se<hind- sight sorcery; the Four Vampires, who supply sjme ocmic pantomime scenes, with otliers named in the programme, will be certain to provide excellent entertainment for the audiences. H should not be forgotten that there will be two performances nightly at the Panopticon as at the Empire. NEWPORT. Verno and Voyce, the "fin-de-cycle" bicyclists who were such favourite- at Cardiff last week, appear at the Newport Empire. Among other:, engagtd for that place of enter- tainment are al*o the Macdonald Troupe of five international dancers, who came with a j/ood reputation, and aire the winners of 250 prizes. The French clowns, 'the Avone Brothers, are certain to keep the audiences in good humour, and there are several other "turns" of con- siderafole merit. SWANSEA. At Mr. Oswald Stoll's music-hall in Swan.-ea Lady i\Iari<ei 1 will ocenipv the premier position in the bill, and will be .supported by a host of sp.endm variety entertainers, among them being Phil and Hattie Miilr, two humorous Yankees, wlio ha.ve been v.e'l received at the Palace Theat.re, London. SUICIDE CLUB. THE LATEST VICTIM OF THIS NEFARIOUS SOCIETY. A Dalziel's telegram from New York on Sunday says:—The Suicide Club, whose strange freaks oame prominently before the public in the beginning of this year, has just given another disma.1 sign of its continued existence. Qn Thursday a. young man named Thornafi Milford arrived at the Palace Hotel, Newark, and in the course of his conversation wita the clerk stated that at a meeting of his club he had been selected to kill himself on the 27th inst. The clsrk treated the matter as a st-aie joke, and took no further 11 itice of M-iiford's movements. Early on Friday momiag, however, the hotel watch- man became aware of a strong odour of gas issuing through the door crevices of Milford's room. On opening it the strange visitor was found senseless and dying from the effects of the gas which he had turned on. In his coat pocket were found papers showing that tu iv&s, indeed, a member of the New York Suicide Club, and nad drawn the fatal lot-his death warrant—at its last meeting. The paper was headed by the club's insignia, skull aId c rosso ones, printed in red. with Decaml't"f 27 below. It appears that this is the eighth suicide committed by the mem- bers of the nefarious society. .liilLl1 -HP"1

GREAT FIIIE AT LEEDS. HEPWORTH'S CLOTHING FACTORY BTJRNED (DOWN. The most disastrous fire which has occurred in 3,eed's for years broke out shortly after eleven o'clock on Saturday night, when the extensive clothing factory of Messrs. J. Hepworth soid Co., Claypit-lane, was completely gutted. When 'be fite brigade arrived they found the building, which is 80 yards long, 40 ytrds wide. and thrft- s:o:eys high, one mass of name:. Two steaiueiv were quickly got to work, and 3,000 yards of 1Io.>e brought into requisition, but, despite the exertions of the brigade, the roof collapsed within twenty minutes of their arrival. The interior of the building consisted for the most part of pitchpine, which burnt very Sercelv, Fortunately, there was no breeze, otherwise the consequences would have been very serious, as the neighbourhood is congested and swarms with huge manufacturing places- As it was, the flames spread to the adjoining warehouse occupied by Burgh and Co., clotltiers, pnd also dfrnuered a. row of houses in Queen-square, the inhabitants of which were thspwn into a state c-f wild consternation. The brigade, however, managed to concentrate the ire pretty well. thonyh there was never any hope of saving the building where it originated. The damage to Messrs. Hepworth'R property alone is estimated at close upon 280,000, and about 1,000 hands will be thrown out of employment. The pro- perty was insured in several offices. -?

A BRAVE QUARRY MANAGER
A BRAVE QUARRY MANAGER BESTCUE ON A WELSH MOUN- TAIN". An old man nairaed Humiplhrey Jones, 67 years of age. residing at Brytnt-glwys, near Towyn, 'had a narrow escape from being frozen to death on the mountain between Machyn- lleth and Abergyaojwyn on Christinas Eve. In spite of the warnings of friends and the threatening aspect of the sky, he expressed bis determination of crossing the mountain on foot, and re-joining his family. Soon after he started a terrible and blinding snowstorm came on, and he lost hie way. After waiting anxiously for some hours has friends became alarmed, and a search party was organised, under the command of Mr. J. Meyrick Roberts, assisftamfc manager of Bryneglwys Quarry. For lioliz-z they travelled the- mountain roads and paths in vain, and eventu»Hy they separated in t.wo couples, searching the mountains in dif- ferent directions. The snow was blinding and the wind keen and strong, and to add to their discomfiture Roberts and his party discovered t'hat their lights were going out. They heard a splash in a brook ciose by, but their shouting elicited no reply, and their lamps became ex- tinguished. Whilst groping their way jn the I dark Roberts eli-pped and, fell down a ledge, where he found also Jones was lying. Th;> poor man was benumbed with the cold, and almost unoonecious. Restoratives were applied, and the poor fellow was half carried, half dragged to his home. On their arrival at Bryp.eglwvs it was discovered th,at the second party had not returned, and Roberts organised another search party. Thef»e were, however, obliged to return at five o'clock in the morning unsuccessful and worn out with fatigue, having spent the night on the mountain. After a short rest Roberts set out again, and came upon the missing party making their way home- wards. they having discovered themselves in the morn inc. after suffer'-ing terribly from the effects of the storm, near Machvn.leth, where ihev had a short sleep before resuming their homeward journey.
SINGULAR AFFAIR*
SINGULAR AFFAIR* SHOT FIRED INTO A GROCER'S SHOP AN NEATH. Much exci'tement prevailed at Nea.th on Satur- day night by the report that an attempt had been made to murder a Neath tradesman in his shop. It appears that Mr. John Jones. grocer, who.-e plaoe of business is in Pendre. Neath, was busy attending to his customers on Saturday night. He wa", leaning over his desk, writing out a bill, when a bullet crashed through hi" plate-glass window and whizzed close to hi" head. There were several customers in the s:iop at the time, but, happily, no one was injured. The police were called, and were promprlv 011 the scene. A thorough investiga- tion of the strange occurrence is being made. but up to Sunday night there had not been any clearing up of the mystery. It does not appear that ;'uv report of firearms was heard, and it is suggested that an air gun or strong catapult was ui-ed. --?-

Killed his Schoolmate
Killed his Schoolmate GVX EXPLODED AFTER YEJLBS OF SNAPPING. Lads had often Played with the Musket and no one Knew it was Loaded. The Green point Hangers have been in exis- tence several months. Their headquarters is in a woodshed in the yard of A. M. LuTas house. Xo. 123. Huron-street. Greenpoint. The Rangers number nve:-William Babbingtonj of No. 57, Dupont-street: Christopher Law- less. of No. 130, Huron-street; William GreIS, of No. 125, Huron-street: Walter Williams, "ho lives in the same neighbourhood, and Mr. Lum's eon. Babbington ? twelve years old, Lawless was ten, Gress and Williams are each eleven years old. The name Greenpoint Rangers Ît; proudly blazoned on the woodshed door, and in that modest armoury has been stowed away the Rangers's property, namely, one ancient army musket, one old horse pistol, one venerable sword, one cast-off uniform, once worn by a Union soldier, and one drum. Mr. Lum bought the old musket many years ago in a. junks hop in New York, he cannot re- member exactly where. It is of the pattern of '69, which was loaded with a bullet and fivs buckshot. Mr. Lum does not know wiieo. it was last loaded. He has never loaded it. He has snapped dozens of caps on the nipple, and the gun has never been dia. chiirgvd. Last summer Mr. Lum and hit family went to Plainfield. He took along the old musket that his children might shoulder arms with it, march around, and amuse them- selves. Mr. Lum thought he left, the musket lit Plainfield, but his son carefully took it home with him. The Qreenpoint Rangers ha vie snapped hundreds of caps on it. There were no officers in the Rangers. It was turlli about in command, the boy who wore the uniform, with the trousers and coat sleews turned up, ranking the others. After school the RangeM drilled in Mr. Lum's yard, and sometimes they paraded the neighbouring streets. They were drilling in the the yard the other d&y. Lawless wore the uniform, Babbington carried the gun. Lum flourished th-s sword, Williame brandished the horse pistol, and Gress bed the drum. It was fine sport, but finally they tired of it. "Let's play burglars," cried Lawless, "and I'll be the burglar." Lawl<<ss took off his uniform, for which they all have much -espect. Then, after many twistings and turnings around the yard, after; much mock secrecy, Lawless proceeded to break into the woodshed. While he fumbled about in there the other boye waited for him outaide. Babbington put up the old army musket and drew a bead on the woodshed door. Lawless the daring burglar, found himself caged. H. put his head out of the door to survey the. field before making a phyful dash for freedom. Babbington pulled the trigger. The paper cap fell from the gun nipple. Babbington racked the old musket again and stooped to pick up the cap, for ammunition is dear to a boy'e poo- kfet. As Babbmgfcua leaned forward he aeoee- sarily lowered the muzzle of the musket. A* ] the same moment Lawless tfhrew wide tharj woodshed doer. The hammer of the musket fell on the nipple that had no cap on it. The old musket, which had not been loaded in the memory of its owner, was dis- charged. Its charge tore off the left side ot Lawless's face. He fell on his back, and died' without a groan, while the Rangers ran into tha basement of the house, cowering in fear. Dr. F. M. Burke, of Kjen^street, an uncle of Lawless, was called, and an ambulance came from the Eastern District) Hospital. The boy's body wae taken home. His mother has been ill, and it is feared her eon's untimely death may hurry hers. Babbington was ar- rested by Detective Behten, of the Greenpoint Avenue Station. Babbington is inconsolable. Lawless was his best friend and constant cam- paion. It is supposed that the fulminate in the ca.Ps so often snapped on the musket had formed a sort of fuse leading to the charge that had so long laid in it.
