"THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS" I
1 "THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS" ?- AN HISTORICAL ROMANCE OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. PART II. CHAPTER IV. (Continued). "What matters it ? I am speaking of one that does. Listen! One day, two months *fter your departure, I was walking alone in the forest thinking of the brilliant parties of "he Count of Toulouse—thinking, perhaps, of when I heard a well-known voice sing- 'OR the plaint of Arthur of Brittany." "The Flower of the Forest," stammered the 'Use Flower of theV Forest," she repeated, emotion; "you know at last whom I apeak. I had not hear for a long time. How ^■Utiful I found her! She ran with open *r*118 to meet in». Sh« took from her honey- basket a bouquet of beautiful wild 'which she fastened on nay bostan, and then 6he spoke of you!" exclaimed Didier. ishe did not name you, but I recognised felt' ^l6r^ sir, very foolish; I 48 my heart would break." <*ptahi timidiy extended his hand to of Alice. said, "I am very ^~Wbit towards you—towards you both, per- '??dø her only, sir," said Alice, foi^fet that you love he* do not forget that she lovep you." At this moment they were interrupted by the voices of M. de Vaunoy and the Marquis Beohameil. "I have not told you all," said Alice, hurry- ing away; "we shall see each other again." "Does she still love me?" asked the captain of himself. "To see him again," murmured Alice, burst- ing into tears the moment she was alone. "To once more listen to unmeaning protesta- tions showered upon me by way of consola- tion; to read pity in his eyes, and only be able to raise myself in my own eyes to plead the cause of a riTal!" She took a small brass medallion from her bosom, and, passionately kissing it, exclaimed, "How I love him,! Oh, heaven! how I love him!" Alice loved Ðidier with all the fondness of a girl's first attachment. Until lately she had seen no obstacle in the way of her and happiness but her duty and the will of her father. Now an abyss opened before her. Didier had forgotten her, and transferred his affections to another. Vaunoy, to do him justice, loved his daughter, and wished to promote her happi- ness, but the course of events left no choice. A word from. Bachameil might place in jeopardy his title, his fortune—perhaps his life. Alioe was in some degree aware of this, and had she not known Didier might, perhaps, have sacrificed herself to the repose and safety of her father; but between Bechameil, a frivolous old man, and Didier, the contrast was too great. Alioe had also long suspected that Vaunoy held the rich domains of Trem- lays only by a doubtful and precarious right of possession; that ehe regarded this usurpa- tion as a danger, and not as a crime, because she was ignorant that it prejudiced the legiti- mate proprietor, if any such existed. Her father's character had been for years a per- petual source of uneasiness to her, and her I' short love scenes with Didier were the only real moments of pure joy she had tasted. Vaunoy had repeatedly desired her to forget Didier and favour the addresses of Becha- meil. The poor girl replied that she would endeavour to obey him as regarded- Didier, but that nothing should induce her to bestow her hand upon Bechameil, for whom she had conoeived an unconquerable dislike. Vaunoy had latterly besought her to change this determination. He did not succeed, but he gained time; when the unexpected appear- ance of Didier at the chateau threatened to defeat all his projects. Didier had scarcely recovered from his astonishment at the sudden disappearance of Alioe when Vaunoy and Beohameil made their appearance on the terrace. He advanced to meet them, and, having coldly returned their salutations, took from his pocket a parchment, to which the Koyal seal was attached. With your permission, gentlemen," he said, "we will now proceed to speak of that which concerns the service of his Majesty. Upon the proposition of his Serene Highness the Count of Toulouse, Governor of Brittany, the King has conferred upon me the mission of escorting the funds arising from the impost across this country, which is considered dangerous; and his Serene Highness has given me particular instructions to pursue and destroy, by every possible means, this handful of rebels who bear the name of Wolves. I presume I may count upon your aid, gentlemen, as two loyal subjects of the King ?" They answered, with many protestations of loyalty, .in the aitirmative. "My measures," resumed Didier, "are all taken. The gendarmerie of Rennes have had notioe; those of Laval are at this moment on the march. The police of Vitre, Fougeres, and Louvigne-du-Desert, will second me if necessary. We shall muster altogether three hundred men." "It is not enough," said Vaunoy, "the Wolves are four times as numerous." "I thought they were more numerous still," replied the captain. "We shall be one against four. It is too much, for we shall have all the advantages on our side. You don't imagine, 1 suppose, that I shall attack them in the Wolf Pit? Do not be surprised, M. de Vaunoy, that I am acquainted with the name of their retreat. Thanks to the circumstances, 1 know the Forest of Rennes as well as if I had been born in it." "I am aware," resumed Didier, after a pause, during which De Vaunoy turned pttlbft, "that the position of the Wolves is impr«f £ l8 £ H veeH <9o not intend to run the i ■' chance of attack until his Majesty's money is I placed in security. I must also have fortified positions in the forest; and I demand of M. de Vaunoy, your chateau of Tremlays; of you, marquis, your chateau of La Kose." "I thank you, my dear guest," said Vaunoy, in a tone of most cordial courtesy, "that these measures you speak of form the last part of your plan. Before fortifying yourself, you will, doubtless, be occupied in escorting the money that awaits you at Rennes, for they say the King's purse is empty, or nearly so." "Such, in fact, is my project, sir," re- -plied Didier. "Then in the meantime we will oonvert Tremlays into an inn, where the escort can halt for repose and refreshment," said Vaunoy. "The impost money," replied th<J captain, "is under the guaranty and responsibility of the comptroller-royal, so long as it remains in Brittany. It is, therefore, for him to choose the place where it shall pass the night." Vaunoy anxiously awaited the comp- troller's reply. "My small chateau of La Rose," said the latter, gravely, is not so well adapted to sustain a siege as that of Tremlays. If, therefore, M. de Vaunoy would allow the escort to halt for the night at his house, I would esteem it a great favour, and would, of course, indemnify 'him against all ex- penses." CHAPTER V. Vaunoy acceded to this proposition with an eagerness which surprised the, young captain, who, though he heartily despised him, did not for a moment doubt his loyalty. It was, therefore, definitely arranged that the convoy should leave Rennes the following day, and halt for the night at Tremlays. The party then proceeded to breakfast; immediately after which Vaunoy retired to his private room, and summoned his steward and Lapierre. He spoke a long time to them on a project which had first occurred to him on the terrace while in company with Didier and Bechameil. He had eagerly balanced the chances during breakfast, and had determined on a plan of action. They listened to him attentively, but made no reply. "Have you not heard me?" demanded Vaunoy. "Yes," said Lapierre, "for my part I have heard." "And so have 1" added: Master Alain. "And what say you to it?" said Vaunoy, frowning. But they remained silent. "How?" cried Vaunoy, with an oath, "do you not understand that by this scheme his death will become a casual circumstance, for which I cannot be responsible, and that suspicions will, naturally turn from me?" "Yes," said Lapierre, "I understand that perfectly." "And so do 1," added Master Alain. "Do you suppose, then, that the allurement of 500,000 livres is not sufficiently tempting?" "They would come for a tenth part of that sum," replied Lapierre. "For the twentieth part," said Master Alain, "I would give my soul to the devil; I, who am an old man, and a faithful subject of the King "Now mark," said Vaiinoy earnestly, "it ia absolutely necessary that one of us leave this house on horseback within the hour. I will pay 1,000 livres to him who will obey me." "The dead never return to claim what is due to them," replied Lapierre. "I will pay the money in advance," said Vaunoy, impatiently. Lapierre shrugged his shoulders, and Alain imitated him. 'So you both refuse me?" exclaimed Vaunoy in an agitated voice. "For my part, I refuse," said Lapierre, boldly; but Master Alain made no reply. At the expiration of a few moments Vaunoy appeared to have come to some sudden determination. "Master Alain," he said, "prepare my travelling dress and pistols; Lapierre saddle my horse." They regarded him an instant with astonishment; then hastened to obey orders. Left alone, Vaunoy- sank upon a c-hair. The ruddiness of his oheek had given way to a frightful paleness. His eagerness to rid himself of Didier had determined him to incur great personal risk to rccomplish his object. When all was ready he mounted his horse, and without uttering a word rode away. He set his life upon a cast, and resolved to withstand the hazard of the die. Long before the hour of Herve de Vaunoy's departure honest Jude had quitted the chateau to visit the dwelling of Pierre Rouan, I the charcoal-burner. He could not take a step ir sombre winding roadftits forest without seeing something to revive old re- collections. It was by this path that Nicolas Treme rode, when lie visited, with Master George, his fine manor of Bouexis; at this spot wnere the faithful Job bad forced a famished wolf from his hold; this tangled path led direct to the pond of Tremlays, which, erhaps, was the tomb of the last of the race. In former days Jude remembered to have seen smoke curling from the thatched dwel- lings of the foresters. This was no longer the case. Some of the huts were still standing, others half burnt, but the greater part deserted. Instead of the incessant noise of the adze and the axe, accompanied by the cht-erful songs of the workpeople, a universal silence reigned around. What plague, then, had passed over the Forest of Rennes. What pest had depopulated its glade, formerly so full of life and bustle? "The people of France have passed this way," said the old squire musingly; "under the pretext of imposts they have demanded money or life; and the foresters have had no money."
