I "THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS"…
I "THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS" I 'N HISTORICAL ROMANCE OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. PART II. CHAPTER I. A lapse of twenty years haw wrought great Changes in the personages of our story. The ahild has grown a man; the man has become Glgedi; the old man has ceased to live. But the good chateau of the Trcmlayg still remains ?t and substantial at the end of its avenue Of lofty oaks. We are in the autumn of 1740, and some ^«nty or thirty people are gossiping round kitchen fire of M. Herve de Vaunoy of tlte Treinlays, lord of the manor of Bouexis- j *n-Eortt. The greater part of them are Servants of the chateau; two or three are grangers, receiving hospitality. Dame I otOtl,housekeeper of the Trexnlays, ig ] IIl11.okiuf;t a. short, black pipe, with a gravity to a matron of her importance. Near her eifc the female domestics of the chateau, though "last, not leasts" the maid of a<^einoi8e]Je Alice de Vaunoy. She con- the company, no doubt, a little beneath but one must kill time; and' Ivon, the ^nbsaoan, is a handrome man. On t-he other side of the spacious fire-place ranged the men. First there is Andre, W* £ 0tt^er» Simonet, thti wine and cider bU *°'r* the farming l»ailiff; and •ion™ W^°m wou^ to men- 0-t the musxin tobie, in t'he ".nh-e of thE! room, is a range of large jugs, brimming with cider. Under the chimney, opposite Dame Goton, is seated a man of the forest, a guest of the Tremlays for a few hours. He is evi- dently a charcoal-burner, for a thick stratum of black covers his face like a ma.sk of bronne. Renee, the ladies' maid, is chatting in a low tone with the handsome Ivon, who is mending I his hunting whip. Andre, the keeper, is oil- ing his gun. CflTentin is doing the agreeable to Anrel but the conversation has not yet I become general. The turret clock of tie chateau lias struck six, and old Simonet has recited the "Angelus." When the silence had lasted I long enough to her mind, Dame Goton made a final sign of the cross, and, carefully shaking the ashes out of her pipe, said, "The days I shorten." Everyone tacitly acknowledged the infinite propriety of this observation, "Come the end of this month," resumed the old housekeeper, "and we ehall repeat the evening 'Angelas' by candlelight." "That's true again." replied Simonet. "Ah! that's triie again," they all repeated with conviotion. Dame Goton enjoyed for an instant the general approbation. "Master Simonet," she resumed, "please to pass aae the jug; my poor tongue borMJ" Instead of one jug they passed ten, and everybody drank plentifully. "Famous liquor, and the right taste!" said the old housekeeper, smacking her lips; "that's true, too, is it not?" Everyone responded in the affirm a tire, and Simonet quaffed a second cup, to prove the sincerity of his opinion. "As to next year's cider," he said, "one don't know what one don't know. Master says the times are full of peril." Renee ceased chatting with Ivon, and looked up with uneasiness. "Do they fear an attack from the Wolves 1" she murmured. At this question the charcoal-burner half olosed his eyes, and cast a furtive glance around. "The Wolves repeated Simonet, striking his fist upon the table; "if I was only in the skin of the king's lieutenant they should not fear them long—the cursed brigands! Aiier have burnt my cider-press!" "Stolen my cows!" added another. "Destroyed my dog-kennels!" said Ivon. "Poached more game than would serve our master for three years!" said the keeper. "Killed my fowls 1" "Broken my espa- liers!" ohimed in chorua the various func- tionaries of Tremlays. Dame Goton gravely replenished her pipe, and said nothing. Pierre Rouan. the phar- coal-burner, appeared to be asleep. "Oh, the cursed brigands!" resumed the ohorus. Here Dame Goton lit her pipe, and gave three lengthy whiffs. "Twenty years ago," she muttered, "the Master of Tremlays was called Nicolas Treme. Those that you name the Vvolveis were lambs then. It is misery tha.t has sharpened their teeth." A murmur of disapprobation followed these words. "The Tfromes were good masterseaid ? -?. Simonet, with the embarrassment that an old courtier would have iu speaking of a fallen king in the presence of a new court, "one cannot say the contrary, but the Wolves are bandits; and it is you only, Dame Goton, who defend them." An imperceptible smile played on the lips of Pierre Rouan. "Master Simonet," replied the old woman, raising her grey head with dignity, I do not defend the Wolves, who know well how to defend themselves. I Pay that they are Bretons, that is all; and that some folks are more valiant at the fireside than anywhere else." The charcoal-burner'? em-ile increased; and the servants seemed abashed at this imputa- tion of cowardice. "Patience! patience!" said Simonet at last. "A brave officer of the king is coming to us from Paris, to command the bailiffs of Rennes, and protect the passage of the impost- money across the forest. Those cursed Wolves killed the laet .captain." "A caution to the new one," interrupted Dame Goton. "One would think you desire evil," cried Renee, severely. "My dear," replied Goton, with irony, "I am old, and I regret the old times. Take my advice, chat with Ivon, and remind him thaA, before running two and two in the copses, it is as well to pronounce a few words before the rector, in the parish church of Liffre." Renee became scarlet, and said not a word. The conversation was about to languish when Pierre Rouan, who, doubtless, had his reasons, for what he did, rubbed his eyes like a man mmkinir, and said, "Have I dreamt, Master SiaoMi ? Did you aoi that wf an to have a new captain, to bring the Wolves to reason?' "I said so, my mam, and it is the truth. So long as the Wolves only pillaged M. de Vaunoy, the Court of Paris did not interfere; but the bold brigands went, as everybody knows, to Rennes, to attack, in broad day, the comptroller's house. They intercepted the impost." "What a pity!" interrupted the incorrigible Dame Goton, with a sarcastic smile. "But do you know when this king's officer arrives?" said Pierre Rouan. "They are expecting him every day, my man," replied Simonet. Pierre Rouan rose, carried a pitcher to his lips, and said: "To the health of the new capta-in!" "To his health!" responded the servants of the Tremlays. Pierre Rouan, before placing his pitcher on the table, added, as a finish to his toast, "and to the confusion of the White Wolf and his cubs I "Good!" said' old Dame Goton, when each had applauded this charitable wish. "Pierre Rouan is a poor man of the forest. It is courageous in him to curse loudly the White Wolf, who ie strong and powerful, and whose orders a thousand arms execute; for presently he will take his holly stick, and go forth in the night near the haunts of the Wolves. Good! I hope no harm will happen to thee, Pierre Rouan." "Thanks, dwme," slowly pronounced the charcoal-burner, "I wish you well also." Pierre Rouan was a strange men. While speaking thus, he looked earnestly at the old housekeeper, with an expression of gratitude on his features that her observation scarcely merited. But his actions were for the moat g&rt inexplicable. Some even thought that he had some mysterious end in view. The most skilful spy would have been bewildered by his conduct. Besides, no one thought of watching him. What good would they have done? His frequent visits to the house of M. de Vaunoy, a known and furious enemy of the Wolves, removed all suspicion of his con- nivance with the latter, and this connivance alone could have attached any importance to a man so low in the social scale. He had established himself in the forest some fifteen or sixteen years previous, and had brought with him an infant daughter. Solitary from habit, and appearing to avoid the society of his equals, he built himself a small hut in the mosit secluded part of the forest, constructed an oven, and from that time made as much charcoal as would sustain his existence and that of his daughter. Marie had grown up a lovely creature; but she was not aware of it. She was the child of solitude. The sight of man troubled and alarmed her. When the huntsman's horn re-echoed in the woods, she hid herself, like the roebucks, in the thicket. She was a child of the forest, simple, pure. half savage, but concentrating within herself the germ of all that is noble, captivating, poetical, and good. The general expression of her face was a mix- ture of .'exquisite gracefulness and exalted sensibility. Her hair, of a delicate auburn, flowed in long ringlets over her shoulders. Her 'arge blue eyes, pensive and soft, beamed with sensibility. Her smile fell like a ray of sunshine on the heart. When not oocupied in the cottage, plaiting honeysuckle baskets, which Pierre Roua;n sold at the fair3, she rambled pensively alone in the unfrequented glades of the forest. Often the traveller stopped to listen to a tnek-dious voice, which s&ng the plaint of Arthur oi Brittany, of which we have spoken in the former part of this story. Those who remembered poor Jean Blanc thought of him in listening to his favourite air; but they more frequently heard Marie than saw her, for when a stranger approached, her .natural timidity prompted her either to conceal herself or fly. Some, however, had seen her, and the report of her unrivalled beauty spread about the country. They called her the Flower of the Forest. Pierre Rouan left his daughter entire liberty to act as she pleasd. His long and frequent journeys from home placed it out of his power to watch over her very carefully. The object of these journeys was a secret even to her. But when he returned he worked doubly hard, to make up for lost time. No one was admitted into the hut. People sometimes sought Pierre in the night, and, in that case, tapped at the door in a peculiar manner. Maxie was so accustomed to this that she scarcely noticed it. One day, however, in the absence of Pierre Rouan, a stranger crossed the threshold of the inhospitable hut; he was a handsome young man.. Her Irfeart beait quicker: a burning blush re-placed the delicate colour of her cheek; and the paternal hut seemed to be all of a sudden less smoky, the sky brighter. From that day her long promenades ceased. She met the handsome stranger, who kissed her cheek, and seated himself besides her at the foot of an oak. The roebucks only, or some spying reynard, witnessed their long in- terviews. This lasted several months; t..en the stranger took his departure, leaving his image deeply engraven on poor Marie's heart. The stranger once gone, the foresters again saw Marie in the woods, though now it seemed she wandered about in a pensive, melancholy mood, and chanted more fre- quently the plaint of Arthur of Brittany. Pierre Rouan did not ask her the cause of her sorrow, because he had guessed it. fro be continued.) _.?.=-? 6, -H_ J
