THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS" I -?. AST HISTORICAL ROMANCE OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. 1 ART I. I CHAPTER t. Nicolas TMme of Trenolnys, Lord of Bouexis-^a-J-poSSftSsed of a consider- afele portion of tha town of Liffre" » domain which made him. lord paramount over nearly all B' Bnttaoy. Hie chateau of Tremlays was one ot the finest in Upper Brittany, aad his manor of Bounrs was not less magnificent. He was stern old man of ooromandinc -Tweaouoe, with lonjf, whit* hair scattered orerl Kin thiok old-fashioned doublet. Age kad not! '<Inr..int.hed the 6re of his glance nor warped fine physique. I The foreateze4 on sewng him ereet in his saddle, riding under the 100iy tress, would gaiiy; exclaim, "So long as my lord hveø there will; be a Breton in the country; and blood-suckers, I of France beware!" I They earid aright. The patriotism of Nioolswj Trerne was the master p«8K<>n of mind.! The decline of the ûndependent party in the xt4t'e only increased his obstinacy. He had' ^ta«ted and protested, and it was with l«s k" on the hilt of his sword 4àai; ke Qn<Wed forth invectives against the. Regaaoy. i ^«»le he was ff)eaking. coin* of the inobleg whispej^ "TheMaetar of Tremteys has ^tioppedi abruptly, » death oeTspfead his features. »ivd has eyes j -»** Vjth .indiamaijcrn. CowtriMchiB lit ad1 he advanced slowly to tie door, and at its thresh- old stopped. "I thank God," he said, aa he cast back long glanoe of defiance; "I thank God I have only lost my wits when my peers have lost their courage." At this daring affront, twenty rapiers were at once unsheathed, but Nioolae Tteme stirred not. "Put up your swords," he said; "I also was insulted. I retire, however. It is not Breton blood that will assuage my anger. Adieu, gentlemen; I pray God that your children may forgst their fathers and remember only thwir ancestors. I separate myself from you and disclaim you-you, who entombed Brittany. I will shed my blood upon her grave; there is yet time for vengeance." The Master of Tremlavs mounted his horse and rode away. Those who tnet him knew not how his mind 1J"C.8 agitated with vindictive and revengeful thoughts. Robust in hem, its well a8 in body, he yet knew how to control his anger. His countenance was calm, though his eye wandered vaguely and indifferently upon the fiat landscape around1) Rennas. The sun was sinking in the horizon when jj cohered the forest. Nicolas Trcnwt more than once e^p*- iy ex- amined the natural and impregnabV-Mtrer.ch- amined the natural and impregnabV-Mtrer.ch- jnarvtd that the virsrin soil offered at w^ianr stM>. He counted, involuntarily. thoee vigorous and' brave men who at a distance were saluting him with respectful affection. '"War," lie murmured, "would be terrible ■with these brave soldiers and these retreats. He stopped his horse and became thoughtful; but soon an absorbing idea took possession of his -Mid. His eyes gleamed with SaTage brightness. "No wa.r," 'ie said, "a d'lel! a single blow! a. single death!" And the Master of Tremlays, thrusting his rowels deep into the flanks :of hi., horse, conceived one of those plans of ex- travagant, boldness which make men of good sense smile, and which even success can scarcely sanction, a plan audacious and chivalric, but impossible and absurd. Such an idea could only enter the head of a ccuntry gentleman ignorant of the world, and measuring the prose of the present with tho poetic measure of the past. His enthusiasm did not conceal f-.om him the depth of the abyss. But he was one of those headstrong men who «■ t^ie precipice before fche-m and yet advo%v<3< One circumstance rione might have made I him pause. 'Hie I-Tause of Tremlays had but one direct heir. oeorgo Treme, grandson of N icol as. M nat would become of the ohild' who was i,w about four years old, injured in I the perso» of his grandfather, and deprived of his .natural profceotor ? Nicolas Treme boc. with ,;aipatience the objection that his con- scieiv'-e urged upon him. "If I succeed," he thought, "George will have a heritage of glory. If I f&il, my cousin of Vaunoy will preserve for him his glory. Vaunoy is a loyal man." As he mentally pronounced these words, a distant sonc of the country fell upon his, ears. ¡ It was a dirge, the melancholy air of which acoompanied the recital of the sad fate of Arthur of Brittany, cruelly put to death by his uncle, John of England. Nicolas Treme started, and a presentiment of evil orossed his mind. "Impossible!" he niumured, "Vaunoy is a worthy kinsman The voice drew nearer and the song seemed to take an ironical turn. "Besides," resumed the old gentleman, "George is a Bretion; his happiness, like his blood, belongs to Brittany." The voice was silent for a moment, and then burst forth just above Nicolas Treme. He hastily raised his head, and perceived, high up i>; a gigantic chestnut, a being of an extraor- cinarv and Yiio-t, diabolical appearance. If a traveller had met with it in the forests of the New Worid, he would assuredly not have accorded it the name of man; it more resem- bled ;u enormous monkey of a whitish hue; iutd, leaping from branch to branch with astonishing agility, it continued its song, It is probable it was not the fir&t time the Master of Tremlays had met with this aston- ishing (person ^e> for he stopped his horse, without manifesting the 1east surprise, and whistled as if to a dog. The song immediately ceased, and the creature, perched at the top of the chestnut tree, swinging from branch to branch, fell at the feet of the old lord with a respectful grunt. Its costume waa formed of v;l;ite rabbit skins; iits naked legs awkwardly supported a bhort and deformed trunk: its hair. eyebrows, and beard were, like its per son, white; its features were sharp and an- gi.lar, a.nd its eyes glistened with a wild and resttosi expression. He rose with a bound, and planted himself in the middle of the road before the horse's head. "How it* it with your father, Jv. ?.L. -LI ■ Bkr.c?" demanded the Master of Tremlays. **How goes it with thy grand?oa, Nicolas Txt»me?" replied the dwarf, cutting a caper. A shade passed over the features of the old ma pi. This abrupt question mysteriously cor- responded with the recent subject of his untoey Teverie. "You get insolent, my boy," lie ivplied; "I am too good to you fellows, and it makes you audacious. Stand out of the way." Ii: stead of crying this order, given in a severe tone, Jean Blw,c seized the horse's hridJ IØ and smiled quietly. "You are mis- taken, my lord," he said in a soft and melan, choly* voice. "It is not to us poor people that you are too good; it is to others whom you ;jove, and who detest you." "Pt»oe! idiot that you are," cried Nicolas Treme. Je-, on Blano did not let go the bridle, but conti nued: "The father of Jean Blanc is well. Jean Blano was watching near him yesterday; he will watch near hirr to-morrow—yesterday, my lord, you watched over George Tre'ie; pboTI you watch over him to-morrow ?" "Wh8lt do you mean?" demanded Nioolaa Tremtt. "It ia a fine song is that of Arthur of Brit- tsvriy—listen. I know bow to crawl under o;ver re well as to climb on the tops of trees. I have followed you a. long time in the forest. You were chatting with your conscience; I comprehended, and I sang the song of Arthur." "What!" criedi the Masth- of Tremlays, ":10\1 have heard mo?" "Ves; but you talked more nonsense than I could make out. But be wjumed by me. Li save not our little master George to the ro»?roy of a cousin. If you will go far away, taike your grandson with you; if you cannot do so, kill him; buVs do not abandon him. And now I shall cut some branches for making cask-hoops. Nicolas Treme, may God bless you." Jean Blanc let go the bridle, and climbed like a savage cat up the gilaried trunk of the chestnut tree, and Nicolas Treme proceeded pensively on his way. "It is n, poor idiot," he Raid to himself. But he felt more and more impressed with sadness; and when the voice of Jean. Bfeno aga:in made itself heard above the bushy heads of the hugh caL-, singing the melancholy plaiinfc of Arthur of Brittany, the old man's blood chilled, and he tremblingly repeated the name of his grand- son. When Nicholas Treme reached the gate of his handsome chateau it was quite dark. Ho threw the hotse's bridle to a servant, ascended the staircase with an absent air, and went straight to the chamber of his grandson. George was asleep. He was a pretty, a very pretty child, and his curled, flaxen hair lay in graceful tresses on the embroidered pillow. Without doubt, he was at this moment under the in- flnence of a sweet dream, for his rosy mouth was partly open with a smile, whilst his little hands moved rapidly about, and seemed to sustain a struggle of caresses. When infante are thua merry with joyful dreams, the good folks of the oountry say they are lamghiug with the angels. A caarni:nsj and poetical idea, certainly; but :n Brittany all that is charming and poetical turns quickly to melancholy; they regard these joyful slumbers as a foreboding of death. The childs laughs with angels because the angels of God are there, playing round his pillow, to carry his soul to heaven. Nicola? Treme leant over the conch of his >_ ——————wwyg«o——a——w———wa—— grandson. His bearded lip touched the satin, cheek of the child, who awoke not. "Arthur of Brittany," murmured the old n an, who could not forget the words of Jean Blanc; if the last scion of my race were going to be sacrificed! But, no! This man is an idiot, and my cousin Vaunoy does not resemble John of England." He then seated himself near the pillow of the child and sank into a profound reverie. I Tho Master of Tremlav?, rich and noble, had lost his only son two years previously. This I son, Jacques Treme, was the father of the infant George. He had beer- a very strong and fine man, and Nicholas Treme had early inspired him with his hatred for France, and his love for Brittany. Jacques was hi" right hand, his successor, his second self. George was but a child. The death of Jacques was a sad blow to the old lord. It was not only a uJon but, bhe inheritor of his opinions who had descended to the tomb. He felt himself getting old. Would he have I time to inoculate George with his hatred and love? CHAPTER II. There was in the province of Brittany a poor family, who claimed to be a branch of the House of Treme. and added this name to their own. Before the death of Jacques the old lord had instituted a suit aga«nst that family to compel it to desist from all pretensions to the na.me of Treme. The process was pending, and the Parliament of Rennes was, apparently, about to decide in the case Treme v. Vauuoys, when Jacques died. This fatal event seemed suddenly to change the plans of the Lord of Tremlays. He stopped the suit pending in Parliament, and invited Herve de Vaunoy, the head' of the famd.y, to visit him. Vaunoy moimtojJ u ,-v—•- »«e, A ?_ and crossed- the forest. On reaching the do- main of Treme, and the woods of Bouexis, he respectfully doffed his cap, and saluted all tlJi" I opulence, while a triumphant smile played round his thin lips. His grey eyes almost disappeared under their long lashes; but, so far as one could judge, they seemed in keeping with the ruddy freshness of his cheeks. In short, he had the air of being one of the best fellows in the wrrld, and it was impossible to see him for the first time without exclaiming, "There is an excellent little nUHl The second tune jou said nothing at all. 11ut third you thought to yourself that the little man might not, perhaps, be as good as he wished to appear. Ho examined, as lie proceeded, the manor of Bouexis, whidh, with its farms, tenements, and its appurtenances, he found very much tn his taste, and lie cordially admired the fine growth of timber. One would have said that the lirtle man already saw himself the master and future lord of all this wealth. But. what pleased him more than all was the chateau of Tremlays itself At the sight of tin's noble edifice, whose portal opened upon an immense avenue, Herve de Vaunoy stopped his horse, and could not refrain from a cry of amaze- n <:nt. "Saint-Dieui!" lie murmured, quite moved, "Our house of Vaunoy, with its stables, cow- houses, and dove-cote, might be placed under tlw portal of this splendid chateau. It would b3 very hard of my Cousin Nicolas not to give me lodging in some little corner; and when one gets a corner and watches the oppor- tunity the devil does the rest." He rr.ised the heavy knocker of the gate, and put aside his smile to assume a hun ble and reserved air. The Master of Tremlays was seated under
