" THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS"
THE MASTER OF TREMLAYS" AN HISTORICAL ROMANCE OFTHE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. PART IL CHAPTER IJI. I In the meantime. Jude had endeavoured to j Ind his way in the wilderness, and at length reached the savage ravine that we already know under the name of the Wolf Pit. Ths face of the honest squire wore a grave and 8ILd expression. He was, doubtless, thinking I that the last time he visited the spot was in the company of his late master. Having carefully looked around' to assure kilnaelf that he waa quite alone, he entered the hollow trunk of the old oak and found there a few remnants of cask-hoops, and nearly All the tools of Jean Blanc, which from their frUoted condition had evidently not been used tOt. a long time. He seized a mattock, and afc once commenced ilia labours. Whilst he worked there was an imperceptible movement in the bushes, and the heads of two men, masked in a fragment of Wolf-skin, showed themselves. A third head, In a white mask, appeared at the same instant m the opposite thicket. The three men thus strangely disguised, rapidly exchanged a sign of intelligence. The one in the whits mask lnade an order of some kiivi, for the two outers 14nmedia.tely retired into their hiding-places. The white mask noiselessly extended him- tolf. upon his belly, and crawled cautiously towards the tree. which w-Mi slowly reached. Be then rose, and peeped through one of the •oertures that time had made in tha trunk of the old oak. He removed his mask for an instant to enable him to see better, and' re- vealed a face covered with black and smoke. It was Pierre SRouan, the charcoal burner. Jude worked away, and little imagined that an inqusitive eye followed each of his move- ments. At the end of some minutes the mattock re-bounded upon a hard and sonorous substance. Jude drew out the iron coffer that Nioolas Treme had buried, and, having ex- amined it an instant, took a key from the pooket of his doublet. At this instant, Pierre Rouan noiselessly crawled baok to his hiding-place. It was well for him he did so, for Jude, on the point of opening the coffer, changed his mind, and walked round' the oa.k, easting an anxious look in every direction. He saw no ono; re-entered the hollow trunk and unlocked the coffer. Everything was in it, untouohed as on the day of the deposit. The old squire could not repress an exclamataon of joy in thinking that, with this, George Treme would be able to recover his entire inheritance. But an expression of sadness soon re-plaoed his joyful smile. Where was George Treme? Anxious to reach the chateau, to ascertain, if possible, the fate of the child, he carefully concealed the coffer aa before, and hastened to the 6pot where Didier was awaiting him. Pierre Rouau. however, kept his eye upon him until he disappeared.—"It is Juds," he muttered. "Jude, the esquire of Treme! He has left < he coffer I will see this night what it contains. In the meantime our people must not suspect this mystery, or they will antici- pate me." When Jude was out of sight, the two masked men left the thicket and rushed towards the oak. They removed the tools, examined tvery crevice in the trunk, and found nothing. These two men were wolves. "Master," they said, touching their caps, "What have you seen." Pierro Rouan shrugged his shoulders. "It is a great pity you don't inhabit the good town of Vitrie," he said, "you are as curious as old women. I have seen a clown dig up two dozen pieces of six livres that he had buried in this spot." The two Wolves looked at each other. "That makes six louis d'ors," grumbled one of them; "andl there are, perhaps, others." "Search," said Pierre Rouan, with affected indifference. "I will watch in your place." The two Wolves hesitated an instant, then touched their caps and regained their posts. "It is well," said Pierre Rouan, putting on his white mask again; "but remember this— when I am there my eyes watch with yours; I can pardon an instant of negligence. When I am away, negligence becomes treason, and you know how I punish traitors. Now mark! Soldiers have been seen in the forest, and, perhaps, even at this moment the eyps of enemies are examining the depths of this ravine. The least imprudence may betray the secret of our retreat. Beware!" The charcoal-burner pronounced these words in an imperious tone. The two Wolves replied humbly, "Master, we will watch." Pierre Rouan took the two pistols that hung at his girdle, and hid them under his vest- ments. "I am goinpr to the chateau," he said, 'to learn what we have to fear from the King's people. I shall return this night," and, climb- ing the slope with a rapid step, he disappeared behind the forest trees. "There are but the White Wolf and' the dsvil that can run like that," muttered one of the sentinels. "I should like to search yonder oak more carefully." "So shouldi I," replied his companion; "but it would be as much as our lives are worth to attempt it." In consequence of which the two wolves resigned themselves to keep strict watch. Jude traversed the thicket with his mind greatly relieved. Marie and Didier heard him approach. They had been together more than two hours, but time passes quickly with lovers "Adieu," said Marie; "adieu! Thou wilt not leave me again, wilt thou ?" "Never," replied the captain with a kiss, as Judte made his appearance. "Well, my good fellow," <*aid Didisr, who was now alone, "hast thou found the treasure ?" "God has it in his keeping," replied Jude. "So much the better! Now to the chateau!" exclaimed Didier. "I rely upon the aid thou hast promised me," said Jude. "And thou art right, my good fellow: I will do my utmost. Explain to me a little what thou expectest of me ?" "In the first place," said Jude, "although twenty yeahave elapsed1 since I last put foot in the of Tremlays, it is possible J someone- there may recognise me. I would rather then not enter until dark." "Be it 60. The weather is fine; we will wait in the forest. But you seem to forget that there will be lights in the chateau when we arrive." "True," dolefully murmured poor Jude. "I did not think of that." "There is stjll a way of arranging the matter," resumed the captain with a smile. "We shall arrive muffled up in our travelling cloaks, and I will find some pretext for pro- tecting thee against inqusitive regards. After "After 3" retire sW°dl Jude, embarrased. "After, I will endeavour to learn, one way or another what has become of my young master." "Good; we will try what we can do," re- plied Didier. Herve de Vaunoy and his daughter Alice were in the saloon with Mademoiselle Olive de Vaunoy, the sister of Herve; and the Marquess Becharosil, of Nointel, oomptroiler- royal of the impost. They were all unacquainted with the name of the new captain, and Didier's appearance in that character greatly astonished them. Jude, however, remained at the door, muffled to the ears in bis mantle. The young officer advanced into the room with the graceful ease of one long accustomed to high society. Alice changed colour on seeing him, and supported Jici-lf on the arm of her chair. Herve assumed his benign smile. "Saint-Dieu! My young friend," cried he in a most cordial tone, "you are heartily wel- come." Didier thanked him, and having kissed the hajids of *wo ladies, and coldly bowed to -?-- the marquess, seated himself near the Master of Tremlays. "His Majesty's commission," he said, "leaves me the option of choosing between I the hospitality of the Marquess of Nointel and yours. I thought you would not be dis- pleased to receive me for a few days." "I am delighted to see you, my dear young friend." "I thank you. and request that my valet may be at once shown to the chamber I am to occupy." "But he shall first take an evening eup with Master Alain, my steward," said Herve de Vaunoy. At the r.ame of Alain, Jude turned (pale. "My valet is ill," replied the captain; "what he requires is a good1 bed and repose." "As you please, my young friend," said Herve, summoning a domestic. "Prepare a bed for this good fellow, and treat him in every respect as the servant of a man whom I honour and love." Didier bowed, and Jude followed the domestic. Twenty years had very little altered the smiling debonair features of Herve de Vaunoy. Madamoiselle Olive, his sister, was a withered old maid who had been ugly in -her youth. Alice bore no resemblance to either of them. ¡ She Wad a noble creature—tall, and exqusitely formed, with finely-moulded features of a pen- sive rather than a melancholy cast. But her beauty was more than equalled by the match- less qualities of her head and heart. Herve de Vaunoy had married a year after the departure of Nioolas Treme. His wife died at the expiration of eighteen months; and Alice was the only fruit of their union. She was now eighteen years of age. Bechameil, the Marquess of Nointel, had numerous and important oocjinatinos in Brit- fcany. His office of comptroller-royal of the impost made 'him greatly dreaded by those whose pretensions to nobility wers doubtiul, as it invested him with the right of investigating their titles to this distinction; and very necessarily so, as the nobility, being exempt from the payment of the impost, many plebeians assumed the rank merely to avoid the tax. Vaunoy's family papers would ill bear an investigation of this nature. Having assumed the name of Treme, and even quartered his doubtful arms on their escutcheon, he had too much to fear, not to seek. in every way, to conoilitate his judge. Happily for him, Beohameil met him three parts of the way by falling violently in love with Alice, whom he wished to make his wife. This did not prevent Vaunoy from favouring, in some degree, the intimacy which had established itself at Rennes between the young gorl and Didier. Vaunoy had, doubtless, his reasons for that. The evening meal is always an important feature in Breton hospitality. At the ex- piration of soma minutes the steward, deoora.ted with his official silver chain, threw open the folding-doors to announce the sujpper. "We will speak of business to-morrow," said M. de Vaunoy. gaily, "Now lei us sup." Alice rose, and, by instinct, extended her hand to D~dier. It was Bechameil who took it;t the captain contenting himself with the bony figures of Mademoiselle Olive. During supper, M. de Vaunoy frequently pledged his young friend the captain, ex- changing, as he did eo, more than one equivocal glance with Master Alain, to whom lie gave an order, in a low tone, towards the end of the repast. The steward transmitted this order to an ill-favoured valet that Vaunoy had enticed from the preceding year from the service of the governor of the province, and who was cailedi Lapierre. In the meantime. Bechameil paid his accustomed court to Alice, who did not listen to him, but from time to time threw a sad and reproachful glance towards Didier, who chatted assiduously with Mademoiselle Olive. Herve himself conducted the captain to the door of his chamber and wished him good- night. Jude was still up. "Well," said his master to him, "hast thou learnt anything ?" "Nothing reflecting the child: and it is a bad omen! But I know that Dame Goton, who was little master's nurse, is now house- keeper in the chateau. "Shs will give the information, rely upon it," said the oaptain. "I know, also, that I shall be unable to conceal myself much longer, for I have seen an enemy—Alain, the ancient steward of Treme." "1 can say as much, my good fellow. I have seen the face of a knave who was the valet of the governor of Brittany, my noble pritector, and I strongly suspect he was one of the thres sooundrels who attacked me one night in the streets of Rennes; but we will un- ravel all this. In the meantime let us sleep." "Sleep!" exclaimed Jude. The oaptain threw himself upon his bed. Jude watehed. The oaptain slept, dreaming, perhaps by turns, of the noble Alice and the humble forest girl. Jude lay awake, pondering on the best means of discovering the heir of Treme. M. de Vaunoy, old Alain, and the valet Lapierre, held a midnight consultation in the private room of the Master of Trem- lays, A Lapierre, a truculent looking knave, about fifty years of ag:2, originally from the southerly part of Anjou. a soil particularly prolifio in vagabonds and mountebanks, had exercised, until his twenty-fifth year, the double calling of quack and juggler. It waa about this time he entered the service of the Count of Toulouse as valet and footman. He then had with him a young and re- markably handsome child, whom the count made his page, and subsequently ores of his suite. Lapier;?, who remained only valet, conceived a violent grudge again-t the child, formerly his slave and now his superior. When the c-ount was residing at Re lines ai governor of Brittany. Lapierre called upon Vaunoy at his hotel, and requested a private interview. Their conference was long, and Vaunoy more than once cha.nged colour at the words of the late quack, and the latter, op leaving, received a well-filled purse. A fev days afterwards Vaunoy took him into hi, service. It was from this moment that the Master of Tremlays began to show attention to Didi«fc It was a few weeks afterwards that the latt^ was treacherously attacked in the streets ol Rennes. The clook of the chateau had long sounded midnight. Herve de Vaunoy paced the room in violent agitation. "Saint-Dieu!" he cried angrily, addressing his two companions, "you were three against one!—in the night, too; thl-ee good rapiers against a dress-sword, and you missed him "I should have liked to have seen you there," growled Lapierre, showing a deep soar on his breast. "He fought like a devil; and Joachim, our poor compiion, was left dead oa the spot—Heaven rest his soul!" (To be continued.) y
